Gay II, 490 et III, 1262 ; Caillet, I, 3470-4.

Also a large and full discourse of their 1. originall. 2. severall sorts. 3. peculiar errours. 4. high attempts against the state. 5. capitall punishments.

A Calvinist controversialist attacks the English Baptists in Featly's best-known published work, arising from his participation in one of the great public religious debates of the 17th century. The present example is the fifth edition, "augmented with severall Speeches delivered before this Assembly of Divines [and] the famous History of the Frantick anabaptists, their wild Preachings and Practices in Germany," and illustrated with => three plates: a tipped-in frontispiece portrait of the Rev. Featley (engraved by William Marshall), an allegorically rendered depiction of Featley's funeral effigy, and => an irreverently drawn rogues' gallery of the different types of Anabaptists. The section of speeches has a separate title-page, noting that the printing was done by M.F. for Richard Royston in 1646, with the pagination and signatures of this section being continuous with the first; the final portion also has a separate title-page, giving a printing date of 1647.         Flora, seu de florum cultura. Lib. IV. Editio Nova.

(edited by Bernhard Rottendorff). Lib. IV. Editio Nova. (edited by Bernhard Rottendorff). Amsterdam J. Janssonius, 1646. 4to. (45) + (1 blank) + 522 + (12)pp. Engraved title showing the personification of Flora with portrait of dedicatee, the Bishop of Osnabrück, on verso, and 45 full-page plates included in pagination with additional separate plate of ‘Arbuscula coralii’ at p381, historiated woodcut capitals. Contemporary vellum with remains of ties. This magnificent horticultural thesis was not only the first of its kind to deal with the contemporary flower garden (rather than as derived from the classical authors), but it was also a most splendid production with engravings sponsored by the Barberini family showing innovatory horticultural techniques and allegorical compositions by famous artists. The four books describe the choice of site and preparation (military technologists were frequently employed in garden planning, and daring earth-moving works conceived; Ferrari names several celebrated contemporary gardens as examples, see also note below). Selected species for planting are then described; they include narcissi, hyacinths, cyclamen, paeonies, carnations, anemones and China roses. Thirdly, planting and cultivation is extensively dealt with referring in particular to the latest methods. Finally, Ferrari details the use of flowers in arrangements, both in the soil and as artistic devices; knowing their various characteristics and qualities, he describes how best to enjoy each kind. The fine plates include 8 of garden designs; each have geometric plots with intersecting paths for ease of cultivation. Several plates show individual flowers (8 are of narcissi) and shrubs; there are also horticultural implements, an ingenious pest deterrent, flower arrangements and cross-sections of vases showing how the stalks can be kept watered by capillary reaction; particularly interesting is the first known illustration of a specially adapted case for transporting cut flowers (Ferrari, p431). These were all designed by the skilled artist Anna Maria Vaiani. The 7 splendid baroque allegorical engravings are by J.F. Greuter and Claude Mellon after drawings by Guido Reni, Andrea Sacehi and Pietro da Cortona; included is the latter’s famous ‘Triumph of Nature over Art’. This second Latin edition is edited by Bernhard Rottendorff, chief physician of Monster, and is dedicated with a long address to the Bishop of Osnabriick. Ferrari’s original dedication to Francesco Barherini, who had financed the illustrations, is also included. Giovanni Battista Ferrari was born in Siena in 1584; he was a member of the Jesuit order, and a teacher, but is chiefly remembered for his two great books on horticulture, the above work and the ‘Hesperides’ (see no 121); he died in 1655. A very good fresh copy, with only faint toning to one or two leaves. The earlier Latin and Italian editions (1633 and 1638) are invariably substantially browned due to the poor quality of paper used. Nissen 620. Pritzel 2877. See Georgina Masson, ‘Italian Flower Collectors’ Gardens in Seventeenth Century Italy’ in The Italian Flower Garden (edited by David Coffin), Dumbarton Oaks, 1972, pp72-80, on the garden of Francesco Caetani (Duke of Sermoneta) near Cisterna, which the author describes as ‘of particular interest because, in his gardening book, Ferrari singled it out as a perfect example of contemporary planting. Furthermore, a section of the main parterre at Cisterna is the only (illustration) of an existing garden to appear in a book’ (Ferrari, p217). The same article gives extensive details of the carefully devised planting as documented in the Cactani archival manuscripts. Additionally, David Coffin in Gardens and Gardening in Papal Rom’, 1991, pp 175-8, confirms the importance of Ferrari’s ‘major Roman horticultural treatise’. He points out that ‘the ‘new invention’ of edging (compartments) with bricks (pianelle)’ favoured by Ferrari was used at the Caetani garden, and ‘each [Attributes: Soft Cover]

        Il Pont Neuf a Parigi

1646. Acquaforte, 1646, firmata e datata in lastra in basso. Etching, 1646 , signed and dated in the plate at the bottom. Rare example of the first state of four, before the cock on the steeple of the church of St. Germain L' Auxerrois. Magnificent proof, rich in shades , printed on contemporary laid paper, trimmed to the copperplate or with very thin margins, small abrasions visible on the verso, otherwise in excellent condition. The view of Paris taken from the Pont Neuf is one of the masterpieces of Stefano della Bella and her biggest plate. The table is extraordinarily animated with hundreds of characters and animals, a great mix of scenes of everyday life in a grid. The Massar describes only two states of the work expanded to four by Silverio Salamon. The first state, referred to as rare, it is recognized by the absence of the small cock on the steeple of the church indicated in the legend with the number 8. The Massar warning collectors to verify that the absence of the cock has not been caused directly in printing, scratching the work. Magnificent example of this rare and spectacular engraving.         Britannia prout divisa fuit temporibus Anglo - Saxonvm,..

Decorative map of the British Isles, showing the Saxon Kingdoms of Britain in the 5th to 6th Centuries. Jansson's Saxon Heptrarchy map is drawn directly from Joan Blaeu's map of the same title published in 1645, but can be readily distinguished from Blaeu's map by the addition of 3 compass roses, rhumb lines and sailing ships. Blaeu in turn based his map upon a John Speed's map of 1611, which incorporates the two sets of vignettes on either side of the map, showing historical scenes in Saxon history between 456 and 662 A.D. The vignettes have been completely redone by a Dutch engraver and are in the grand style of contemporary Dutch paintings. One of the most decorative and sought after atlas maps of Great Britain published in the 17th Century.

        Thaumaturgus opticus

Bon exemplaire

A bright, tight, unsophisticated copy. At the lower fore-corner of the frontispiece, old ownership stamp of the Lyons Jesuit College (Lugdunensis Soc. Jesu), and, at the upper edge of the front paste-down, their (presumably) shelf-mark (1f –175B 2, 248). Ferrari (1584-1655), a Sienese Jesuit, was Professor of Hebrew and of Rhetoric at the Jesuit College in Rome, and at the same time advisor to the pope on the Vatican gardens and to Cardinal Francesco Barberini, whose Horti Barberini were the laboratory of this endeavor. The fruit of this learning is this four-book treatise ranging from the tools of the gardener to the morphology of flowers, the layout of gardens and the arrangement of flowers in a vase. The work is a milestone both in the breadth of its treatment of interest in flowers, as well as marking the standards of Italian taste in the early seventeenth century. Notably, the work features the first ever botanical illustration based on microscopy (Ii2r, p. 499). No book had ever been so systematic in its analysis of flowers. The first edition was published Rome 1633, and is rather scarce. 1638 saw translation of the work into Italian (as Flora overo cultura di fiori ). This 1646 edition, which declares itself to be a "new edition, refined by Berhnard Rottendorf", is nearly identical to the 1633 edition, the pagination even lining up (save minor alterations such as the replacement of "v" with "u"). The major addition is a 36-page dedicatory letter from Bernhard Rottendorff (1594-1671), a Jesuit medical doctor and chamberlain to the Archbishop of Cologne, to Count Franz Wilhelm von Wartenburg, Bishop of Osnabrück. The plates have, I believe, been re-cut, the original artists’ names having also been removed. The plates are continuous in pagination (i.e., integral with the text), and some retain their deckled fore-edge, suggesting very minimal trimming. Coffin, David.         Florae Lugduno-Batavae flores sive enumeratio stirpium Horti Lugduno-Batavi.Leiden, Frederik Haaring, 1690. 8vo. With engraved frontispiece. 18th-century vellum.

Kuijlen & Wijnands, Paradisus Batavus 79; Stafleu & Cowan 2686; STCN 833427695. First and only edition of a Latin flora of the botanical garden at Leiden University, with the plants arranged in a classification scheme prefiguring Linnaeus, references to the relevant literature and an appendix with further details about the characteristics with references to the catalogue itself, by Paul Hermann (1646-1695) director of the botanical garden. It was edited by Lothar Zumbach von Coesfeld (1661-1727) and lists about 600 plants, with an alphabetical index. For most plants it cites either Hermann's more extensive 1687 alphabetical catalogue of the collection or Gaspard Bauhin's 1623 Pinax theatri botanici , another landmark of plant classification. Hermann, born in Halle an der Saale, sailed with the VOC (Dutch East India Company) to Ceylon in 1672 and collected many plants there. As a professor of botany and medicine at Leiden University, he directed the University botanical garden from 1679 to his death in 1695. He made it the richest garden in Europe during the Dutch golden age, always looking over his shoulder at his leading competitor, Jan Commelin at the Amsterdam botanical garden. The presumably blank *8 has been removed as intended, as in all copies we have seen. With one early manuscript marginal note in Latin. Book and binding in very good condition. An important Leiden flora and an early example of a botanical catalogue arranged according to a classification scheme.

Asia carta di ciasete piu moderna.

Florence: 1646 - 2 sheets joined (23 x 17 ½ inches, trimmed margins showing the platemark). Fine engraved map showing Japan with ornate cartouche and compass rose (very light toning, some separation along the fold). Robert Dudley's splendid Arcano del mare (Secrets of the Sea) is one of the greatest and most complex atlases of the world ever produced. Dudley's monumental work was the only exception to the total dominance of sea-atlas production by the Dutch for nearly a century. The complete work contained nearly 150 sea charts as well as dozens of illustrations and working diagrams. It was superior to any previous work in that the charts illustrated the whole world, and the first time any outside of Europe had been included. Arcano del mare was also the first atlas to show the prevailing winds, currents and magnetic deviation. In using the projection developed by Mercator, Dudley improved upon the theory of navigating by the "Great Circle," the shortest distance between two points on a globe. It was not until the eighteenth century that cartographers used the projection consistently, and during the prolonged period when the Dutch dominated cartographic production, not one atlas was produced using it. One of the great marine atlases of all time, this magnificently engraved work is an encyclopedia of seventeenth-century knowledge regarding the seas. Dudley was one of the more colorful and adventurous characters in the history of mapmaking. The illegitimate son of the Earl of Leicester and Lady Douglas Sheffield, but unable to establish his claim to the title of Earl of Leicester, Dudley left England in 1605. Arriving in Florence, Dudley entered the service of the Cosimo II, Grand Duke of Tuscany, as an engineer and naval commander. In 1646, Dudley published Arcano del mare, the whole written in Italian by Dudley himself. The atlas was twelve years in the making, and the main innovation lay in its conception of a world atlas of charts, both general ocean charts and detailed surveys, covering all the rival spheres of European dominion: Spanish, English and Dutch. Dudley's sources included the original charts of Henry Hudson, and for the Pacific coast he used the observations of Henry Cavendish, the third circumnavigator of the globe (and Dudley's brother-in-law). Aesthetically, the distinctive character of Dudley's charts was due to the Italian Baroque engraving, executed by Antonio Francesco Lucini.
