AL BATTANI, Abu Abdallah Muhammad ibn Jabir [Albategnius]
Bologna: Typis Haeredis Victorii Benatii, 1645. 1st Edition. Hardcover. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. 4to (223 x 160 mm). [16], 228, [4] pp., including half-title, fine engraved frontispiece with Medici arms by Coriolano, errata and imprimatur/colophon leaves at end, the latter with large printer's device. Numerous woodcut astronomical diagrams in text. Text within ruled borders throughout. Contemporary full vellum, spine titled in manuscript (covers faintly bowed). Internally very clean and crisp with no signs of spotting or markings. Provenance: Lieutenant Rafe? (illegible inscription to front pastedown, dated 1817). An outstanding copy of a rare and important work. ---- DSB I, pp.507-16; Riccardi II, 288. First separate edition of al-Battani's "great work on astronomy, ... among the most excellent in Islamic astronomy" (DSB). Al-Battani (858-929 A.D.) holds a place of honour among Islamic astronomers and historians. This is his principal work, the Kitab al-Zij, translated into Latin as De Scientia Stellarum by Plato of Tivoli in the first half of the twelfth century, on which his fame in both the East and West rests. He tested many of Ptolemy's results by fresh observations, and obtained more accurate values of the obliquity of the ecliptic and of precession. He improved the moon's mean motion in longitude, used signs and cosines, and introduced new and elegant solutions into spherical trigonometry. He measured the apparent diameters of the sun and moon and their variation, and concluded that annular solar eclipses must be possible. The indebtedness of Copernicus to al-Batta … [Click Below for Full Description]

Perez de Ribas, Andres.
Madrid: Por Alo[n]so de Paredes, 1645. Folio. [20] ff., 763, [1] pp. A great rarity of the Spanish Southwest, and still the dominant history of the region and of Jesuit activities there for the period from 1590 to 1644, the Historia provides an unparalleled description of the upper part of Mexico and what is now the southwest region of the United States in the first half of the 17th century. Andres Perez de Ribas (1576–1655) joined the Jesuit order in 1602 and arrived in Mexico in 1604 to proselytize among the native Indians. He was assigned to the area of northern Sinaloa, along the Pacific coast, and showed great ability from the start. Within a year he had baptized all the members of the Ahome nation and a large part of the Suaqui tribe, together about 10,000 natives. In 1617 he was instrumental in the pacification and conversion of the Yaqui tribe. Perez de Ribas was recalled to Mexico City in 1620 to work in the college there, eventually becoming a provincial of the school. He returned to Rome in 1643, undertaking the present history (which he completed in 1644) and other histories still found only in manuscript. The work is divided into twelve parts, cumulatively giving a history of Jesuit activities in Mexico and the American Southwest, as well as providing a social and cultural examination of Indian customs, manners, rites, and superstitions. The first part of the book gives a history of Sinaloa and its people before the arrival of the Spanish. Parts two to eleven describe the arrival of the Spanish and the Jesuits in upper Mexico and their activities among th … [Click Below for Full Description]

CARDIM, Antonio Francesco.
Alt-Japan-Katalog 278 (1 copy); Cordier, Japonica, col. 360; WorldCat (5 copies); cf. Lach & Van Kley III, pp. 379-380. Rare first edition of the French translation of an important Jesuit account of the Far East by Antonio Francesco Cardim and an important account of the Malabar region in India by Francesco Barretto. Originally published in Italian, also in 1645, they here published together, translated by François Lahier.Although the title of Cardim's work might suggest it discusses only Japan, it is especially important for its extensive accounts of Thailand and Vietnam, among the earliest we have, and also describes St. Paul's College in Macau, China, the first Western University in the Far East, where Cardim served as rector from 1632 to 1636. It covers the history, religions (notably Buddhism) and customs of the regions. Barretto's account of Malabar "begins with a brief but informative discussion of conditions in Malabar, followed by a review of affairs in the missions to the St. Thomas Christians and to Cochin, Ceylon, Jaffna, Madura, Mannar, the Coromandel coast, and Bengal" (Lach & Van Kley). With some mostly minor and marginal water stains in the last quires, more serious in the last few leaves, leading to some damage and an old restoration in the last leaf with no loss of text. Binding a bit soiled and slightly wrinkled. Still a good copy of a rare work on the Far East and India.

Roobacker, Cornelis Cornelisz / Hotz, A. (ed.).
1645. 8vo. 289-405 pp., in: Tijdschrift van het Koninklijk Nederlandsch Aardrijkskundig Genootschap, tweede serie, deel XXIV no. 3 (15 Mei). 289-545, (1) pp. With 2 folding maps and a folding table. Original printed wrappers. First edition. - In 1645, Captain Cornelis Roobacker set out from Bandar Abbas with two small Dutch ships for the first trading mission to Basra, which could only be reached with small vessels in the shallow waters of the upper end of the Gulf. Three logbooks of this expedition have survived in the Dutch General State Archives; the only one of these to be published is the logbook no. 280a, here edited for the first and only time by A. Hotz. Among the plates are a modern map of the Gulf region as well as a 17th century Dutch nautical chart which the editor errouneously attributed to Roobacker. "Roobacker's ships had English charts on board, but Roobacker complained that they were very inaccurate [... He] made a chart of his travels between Laraq and Basra, with marks of depths and accurate notes on geographic latitude. This chart shows his progress up to Bubiyan" (Slot, The Origins of Kuwait [1991], p. 18). - Occasional slight foxing; a good copy of an important and much-quoted source. B. J. Slot, The Arabs of the Gulf 1602-1784, p. 11. OCLC 71448278.

Nieremberg, Juan Eusebio
First edition. Part of Nieremberg´s set of works and biographies usually gathered as the Varones, each part complete in itself, this is the third part volume in the series, and contains the life of the founder of the Order, as well as plenty material on Japan and South America. It is a compendium of the explorations, travels, discoveries, and evolution of the Jesuits, during the period of their most significant expansion. "This work having been published at different periods during the space of almost a century... The interest of the work, excluding some 'jesuitical chaff', is not inferior to its rarity, as it contains accounts of many early voyages to the Indies, not elsewhere to be found" (Sabin). On Japan, it includes the life, missionary work and martyrdom of Father Marcelo Mastrili (1603 - 1637) in Japan on Mount Unzen (outskirts of Nagasaki) under the Tokugawa Shogunate. Mastrili had sailed to Japan with aims of reconverting the "fallen priest" Christovao Ferreira who had renounced his faith. Ferreira (c. 1580 - 1650) was a Portuguese Jesuit missionary, he worked in Japan from 1609 to 1633 and was the head of the Jesuit Order in that country during the religious purges against Christianity in 1633; after being tortured for hours, committed apostasy, subsequently changing his name to Sawano Chuan and registering at a Buddhist temple. Mastrili was arrested shortly after landing - the relation of his travesty towards Japan is also noted-; he was then submitted to torture and beheaded. Mysticism did not elude Mastrili, he reported to having visions of St. Francis X … [Click Below for Full Description]
