Perez de Ribas, Andres.
Por Alo[n]so de Paredes, 1645. A great rarity of the Spanish Southwest, and still the dominant history of the region and of Jesuit activities there for the period from 1590 to 1644, the Historia provides an unparalleled description of the upper part of Mexico and what is now the southwest region of the United States in the first half of the 17th century. Andres Perez de Ribas (1576-1655) joined the Jesuit order in 1602 and arrived in Mexico in 1604 to proselytize among the native Indians. He was assigned to the area of northern Sinaloa, along the Pacific coast, and showed great ability from the start. Within a year he had baptized all the members of the Ahome nation and a large part of the Suaqui tribe, together about 10,000 natives. In 1617 he was instrumental in the pacification and conversion of the Yaqui tribe. Perez de Ribas was recalled to Mexico City in 1620 to work in the college there, eventually becoming a provincial of the school. He returned to Rome in 1643, undertaking the present history (which he completed in 1644) and other histories still found only in manuscript. The work is divided into twelve parts, cumulatively giving a history of Jesuit activities in Mexico and the American Southwest, as well as providing a social and cultural examination of Indian customs, manners, rites, and superstitions. The first part of the book gives a history of Sinaloa and its people before the arrival of the Spanish. Parts two to eleven describe the arrival of the Spanish and the Jesuits in upper Mexico and their activities among the several tribes, including the con … [Click Below for Full Description]

Blaeu, Joan
?Classis Navium qua hinc discessit comes Mauritius Praefectus? [Click Below for Full Description]

Very rare anatomical print. Plate, Lib. VIII, Tab. XVIII-XIX. Set of 2 plates, showing portraits of standing naked women, from the knee up. Their abodominal cavities are opened, revealing the position of the major organs; kidneys, spleen, bladder and womb, as well as the main blood vessels. Both women are depicted against decorated backgrounds. As the key to this plate(s) is on the rear of previous plate, as issued, a copy of this key is included when applicable. Copperplate engraving on a verge type handlaid paper. Description: This very fine engraving originates from 'Anatomica operum omnium' by Adrianus Spigelius (Adriaan van den Spiegel), published by J. Blaeu, Amsterdam 1645. This splendidly produced edition of Spigelius' Collected Works was edited by the Dutch physician, Johannes Antonides van der Linden. This folio volume is illustrated with 117 anatomical plates. 78 Of these plates originate from Casserius, intended to illustrate his 'Theatrum Anatomicum', a great anatomical atlas that was still unpublished at his death in 1616. The remainder of the plates was prepared by Bucretius. The complete set of plates is seen as the most important anatomical illustration of the post-Vesalian period, and among the finest produced in the seventeenth century. Since before 1600 Casserius had been working on a fully-illustrated anatomical treatise, which he hired Fialetti to illustrate. His "De Vocis" of 1601 concludes with a promise to publish a treatise on the anatomy of the whole human body with illustrations. DUDLEY ROBERT - LUCINI ANTON FRANCESCO
1645. Incisione in rame, mm 485x378. Robert Dudley's "Arcano del mare" is "one of the greatest atlases of the world and one of the most complex ever produced: it is the first sea-atlas of the whole world; the first with all the charts constructed using Mercator's new projection, as corrected by Edward Wright; the first to give magnetic declination; the first to give prevailing winds and currents. the first to expound the advantages of "Great Circle Sailing"; and the first sea-atlas to be compiled by an Englishman." (Lord Wardington). Ottimo esemplare. Copper engraving, mm 475x750. The map shows south-west Africa coast, the earliest obtainable sea chart of the region. It shows the coastline of Namibia and Angola. Second state (with L°6° added in the cartouche). From "Dell'Arcano del ma … [Click Below for Full Description]

GRANDAMI, Jacques
George Griveau, La Flèche, 1645. Presentation copy of the first edition of this rare and richly illustrated Jesuit anti-Copernican tract by Jacques Grandami (1588-1672), rector of the Jesuit college of La Flèche, which was attended by both Descartes and Mersenne. In this work Grandami employs the 'magnetic philosophy' initiated by William Gilbert to refute the heliocentrist position. He also claims to have solved the problem of determining longitude at sea. In the first decades of the seventeenth century 'magnetic philosophy' was used both by heliocentrists and their opponents to support their positions, and Grandami had discussed his views with Descartes and Mersenne, as well as with Huygens, before the publication of this work. "In the seventeenth century debates over the Copernican hypothesis numerous astronomers used magnetism and magnetic theories of attraction to substantiate their theoretical arguments and experimental proofs. William Gilbert initiated the introduction of magnetism into astronomical debate and the analogy between magnets and celestial bodies was subsequently employed in various ways by the heliocentrists, including Kepler and Galileo. By calling up Gilbert's magnetic philosophy in support of Copernican astronomy, Kepler and Galileo influenced the course of astronomical debate by strengthening the analogy and by cementing together the two sciences of magnetism and celestial physics. Yet magnetic arguments and magnetic analogies did not remain the province of heliocentrists alone. Opponents of Copernican theory likewise turned to magnetism, this time t … [Click Below for Full Description]

CHERUBIN D'ORLEANS

There was some rivalry between the astrologers of that time, taking the form of the exchange of words in their pamphlets. Astrologers on both sides of the civil war had to take care not to be accused of treason or witchcraft, and Wharton spent some time in prison. Lilly escaped harsh sentence only through the intervention of influential friends, who spoke for him to the Parliament. Condition: Bound in half-leather, with some wear to the edges of the boards. BLAEU, Johannes.
Amsterdam, c.1645, French text edition. Fine original colour. 410 x 630mm. The Arctic Circle, showing European attempts to find the North West and North East Passages. In Arctic America the preponderance of English names shows the importance of the English explorers in the region, trying to circumvent the Spanish control of routes to the East Indies. On Greenland the entrance to 'M. Forbischers Straet' is marked and in Arctic Russia the names are those given by the Dutch explorers such as Berentz. At the top of the map is a title cartouche depicting wind-heads, a European explorer with a brazier on his lap and a white cannibal, and a scale cartouche with hunters and a polar bear. The European is Henry Hudson, whose explorations in Hudson's Bay (which he called 'a labyrinth without end') ended in 1611 when he was forced into a small boat and cast adrift by a mutinous crew. He was never seen again and it is assumed that his crew would have turned to eating each other to survive. This is an example of the second state of the map, with the dedication added c.1645. It is a direct copy of Jansson's map, but it is interesting that the engraver copied the Baltic Sea's name but not the coastline! BURDEN: 252.

Europe: Amsterdam Apud Johannem Guiljelmi F. Blaeu. c1645. Original coloured, copper engraved map of Iceland from Joan Blaeu's "Theatrum Orbis terrarum, sive atlas novus . " Double page; folio; Latin text to verso. Large decorative cartouche; ship, compass roses and monsters to sea. It fell to Joris Carolus of Enkhuisen, a Dutch navigator and traveller in the North, to produce the most stable and durable version of the position and shape of Iceland, not only on maps made in Holland, but wherever people tried to form some picture of the country and display it on a map. More than a century passed before cartographers had access to newer and more reliable information about the country. The map appeared for the first time in the collection of Jodocus Hondius the younger from the 1620s. After the death of Hondius his plates came into the possession of Willem Janszoon Blaeu. He printed his first edition of the map in his map collection, Atlantis appendix, in the year 1630. Joris Carolus' map of Iceland was printed without change in all editions of Blaeu's collection. The accompanying description of Iceland grew from one and a half pages to twelve. In the same year that Blaeu published his atlas Henricus Hondius, the younger son of Jodocus, and Johannes Janssonius put a collection on the market containing amongst others a copy of Joris Carolus' map of Iceland in Blaeu's version. There is very little difference between the two versions. The cartouche, as well as the name of the map and of the author, is unchanged. Original coloured, copper engraved map of the North Pole from Joan Blaeu's "Theatrum Orbis terrarum, sive atlas novus . " Double page; folio; Latin text to verso. Blaeu`s beautifully engraved map of the arctic was first issued c.1638 and is a precise copy of a map issued by Janssonius the previous year. Burden notes "even the cartouches are the same. But Janssonius has placed his imprint in the lower right cartouche; Blaeu has the scale here." Along with the original Janssonius, Blaeu's map "provides the first detailed summary of the 16th and early 17th century Canadian arctic discoveries" (Kershaw). To the left we see the discoveries of captain Thomas James of Bristol along the southern and western shores of the Hudson Bay during his expedition of 1631/32 (with, among others, "James his Bay"). Spitsbergen is drawn as it was known after the Danish expeditions of 1605-1607. The map provides the best view of the period of discoveries in the area of Hudson's and Baffin's Bays as well as Davis Strait. It is a vast improvement over the Mercator map of the region, whose North Pole was filled with mythical islands. In its day this map was the most up-to-date map of the North Pole region available. Mercator's cartouche is in top right corner, below which are two distance gauges -- German and Italian -- and a ship in the lower left corner, in the Golfo Di Venetia (Gulf of Venice). Vertical fold (as called for). Some faint, thin bleed-through "trails" to text-side from hand-coloring on map side, and presence of 7 3-inch pieces of tape to edges reveals most likely, matting and mounting at some point in its history. May 15, 1645. Although the famous Count Tilly, Johann Tserklaes, was successful and enjoyed the good graces of the Habsburg Empire, his son was not so lucky. Only thirteen years after the death of the elder Count Tilly, the younger had run up a string of debts to the Habsburg government. In this letter, he pleas for clemency from a Habsburg deputy. He protests that he cannot pay his current taxes, let alone the interest on unpaid army, beer, and land taxes. Here, a man whose father gave his life for the empire could not come up with the money to pay its presumably excessive taxes. He blames his inability to pay on an unnamed enemy and promises to pay as soon as he can. This is a story that gets left out of most histories of the Habsburg Empire. Minor spotting does not affect the text of the letter and the seal is well-preserved. Written in German, the letter is accompanied by a notarized translation.
