Willem Blaeu
Amsterdam: Condition: Very Good. Hand-colored copper-engraving of Eastern Europe, depicting "Sclavonia, Croatia, Bosnia cum Dalmatiae Parte" and showing the Danube River and its tributaries across the Balkans and "the political divisions of Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia, Serbia and Dalmatia". At the top of the map are, respectively, the brilliantly-colored coats of arms of The Venetian Republic, The Hapsburg Monarchy, and The Ottoman Empire. Mercator's cartouche is in top right corner, below which are two distance gauges -- German and Italian -- and a ship in the lower left corner, in the Golfo Di Venetia (Gulf of Venice). Vertical fold (as called for). Some faint, thin bleed-through "trails" to text-side from hand-coloring on map side, and presence of 7 3-inch pieces of tape to edges reveals most likely, matting and mounting at some point in its history. Edited by Willem Janszoon Blaeu, using the original cartographic projections of Gerard Mercator. "Sclavonia, Croatia, Bosnia cum Dalmatiae Parte" shows the Danube River and its tributaries across the Balkans and delineates "the political divisions of Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia, Serbia and Dalmatia". At the top of the map are, respectively, the brilliantly-colored coats of arms of The Venetian Republic, The Hapsburg Monarchy, and The Ottoman Empire. Very rare anatomical print. Plate, Lib. VIII, Tab. VI-VII. Set of 2 plates, showing portraits of standing naked men from the knee up, showing the abdominal cavity. Both men are depicted against decorated background. As the key to this plate(s) is on the rear of previous plate, as issued, a copy of this key is included when applicable. Copperplate engraving on a verge type handlaid paper. Description: This very fine engraving originates from 'Anatomica operum omnium' by Adrianus Spigelius (Adriaan van den Spiegel), published by J. Blaeu, Amsterdam 1645. This splendidly produced edition of Spigelius' Collected Works was edited by the Dutch physician, Johannes Antonides van der Linden. This folio volume is illustrated with 117 anatomical plates. 78 Of these plates originate from Casserius, intended to illustrate his 'Theatrum Anatomicum', a great anatomical atlas that was still unpublished at his death in 1616. The remainder of the plates was prepared by Bucretius. The complete set of plates is seen as the most important anatomical illustration of the post-Vesalian period, and among the finest produced in the seventeenth century. Since before 1600 Casserius had been working on a fully-illustrated anatomical treatise, which he hired Fialetti to illustrate. His "De Vocis" of 1601 concludes with a promise to publish a treatise on the anatomy of the whole human body with illustrations. However, at the time of his early death in 1616 Casserio left 86 spectacular anatomical drawings by Fialetti, and also possibly their engravings, but no text. DUDLEY ROBERT - LUCINI ANTON FRANCESCO.
BLAEU, JOAN
?Classis Navium qua hinc discessit comes Mauritius Praefectus? 17e-eeuwse medici waren zeer geïnteresseerd in remedies tegen allerlei onbekende tropische … [Click Below for Full Description]

Rouen: Jacques Cailloue, 1645. [7],442,[9]pp., including six of nine plates. Contemporary full calf, spine gilt, edges sprinkled red. Boards rubbed, corners and edges worn, front hinge cracked, rear hinge starting. Early bookseller's notations in front endpapers. The second edition of this important account of an early French traveller, with the Caribbean cannibalism plate. Mocquet, Keeper of the Cabinet of Rarities of the King of France, describes five voyages he made between 1601 and 1612. The second part of the book is comprised of his Caribbean travels, and describes his voyage to the West Indies in 1604, including to Guiana, the country of Yapoco, and the province of Cumana. Mocquet was impressed with the good nature of the natives he encountered and describes in detail their customs, lack of clothing, cannibalistic practices, and agricultural products. He also records important botanical and natural history information, describing the uses of aloes, odiferous gums, red-woods and other trees, and the honey from stingless bees. The American section ends with several remarkable woodcuts, depicting the Caribs hunting, dancing, rowing, and eating limbs. The remainder of the book describes travel in the Holy Land, Morocco, Lybia, and elsewhere. The first of Mocquet's African travels were in Morocco, where he lived from 1605 to 1607. At the end of that year, after returning to France, he embarked on a longer voyage to East Africa, visiting Mozambique and Ethiopia during 1608 and proceeding on to India in 1609, where he spent several years. BACON, Francis
I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. "Some books should be tasted, some devoured, but only a few should be chewed and digested thoroughly." ― Francis Bacon Francis Bacon, one of the most famous English philosophers and scientists of the Renaissance. While most of his work deals with discovery, scientific method, and the scientific revolution, he did lean strongly toward Puritanism in his personal devotion. An extremely rare printing of Bacon's "Augmentis Scientiarum". According to Willems, the 1662 printing is much more common, however, "There is an earlier edition of this work, no less attractive [than the 1662], it seems to be printed by G. van der Marse (not Elzevier)." Willems also notes that Elzevier printed the complete set of Bacon works that his book comes from in 1662 (Willems 1157, 6*), but that edition was taken from this 1645 printing! This book discusses the advancement of science and technology in the early 17th-century. [Attributes: First Edition]

POINTIS, Jean Bernard Louis de Saint-Jean, baron de.
Alden & Landis 698/169; Palau 230094; Sabin 63700; for Schelte and Wolfgang: Van Eeghen IV, pp. 92-95 & 182-185. First edition, in the original French, of an adventurous account of the French capture and looting of Spanish Cartagena in Colombia, the richest city in the Caribbean, by the great privateer Jean Bernard Louis de Saint-Jean, Baron de Pointis (1645-1707). Pointis sailed from Brest on 9 January 1697 with a fleet of 10 ships, joined in Hispanola by Jean-Baptiste du Casse, governor of Tortuga, who led 600 buccaneers. They reached Cartagena on 12 April, landed three miles from the city and demanded its surrender. The Spanish refused and drove back several French attacks, but finally the city capitulated on condition that the buccaneers should not enter. Pointis and his own men plundered the city and set sail for France, abandoning the buccaneers. Cheated out of their share, they attacked Cartagena themselves, against Du Casse's orders, pillaging and burning the city for three days and raping and murdering many residents. The English fleets pursued Pointis, but captured only a ship full of yellow fever victims, whose contagious infection quickly decimated the English and Dutch fleets. The folding plan of Cartagena and vicinity has an occasional small tear, cut or chip restored or repaired, barely affecting the topographic image, and the book and binding are otherwise in very good condition. First edition of Baron de Pointis's own account of his adventures as a privateer, with 2 beautiful, large maps, of the Caribbean and of Cartagena.
