HOOGHE, Romeyn de.
Hollstein IX, p. 120, 103-108 (lacking frontispiece); Landwehr, De Hooghe book illustrator 38; STCN (7 copies). Rare first edition, with fine emblematic plates, illustrating the injustice and cruelty of the war waged by Louis XIV of France against the free and independent Dutch Republic. Romeyn de Hooghe (1645-1708) was unquestionably the most gifted and the most prolific Dutch book illustrator of the second half of the 17th century. His work displays the political grandeur and disasters of war in the Dutch Republic, including the disastrous year 1672, depicted dramatically and with great splendour. The large plates are richly designed and full of intricate emblems and allegories, fully explained in the accompanying text; an emblematic poem is added to each plate. With manuscript annotation in ink on pastedown. Slightly browned throughout with some thumbed margins, edges of frontispiece slightly frayed, otherwise in very good condition. Head of front board restored, binding otherwise good.

Alden & Landis 647/51 (6 copies); Asher 225 & pp. 192-194; Borba de Moraes, p. 200; Knuttel 5554; Sabin 15933; STCN (6 copies); not in Van Doorninck. First and only edition of a rare pamphlet defending Portugal against the claims of the Dutch Government and the West India Company (WIC) in Brazil: one of the earliest and one of the three "most remarkable works" published by Portugal's supporters in the Netherlands (Asher, p. 194). In an effort to take back Brazil from the Dutch, the Portuguese had supported a local revolt in 1645 and the hostilities on land and sea between the Portuguese and the WIC had escalated rapidly. Portugal was suing for peace, and the present pamphlet presents their side. In a series of questions and answers, it sets forth the Dutch reservations about the peace and distrust of Portugal, and attempts point by point to refute all arguments against a settlement. The author and printer of the pamphlet have not been identified, but the author himself refers to his own Vertooch aen de ... Staten Generael , published earlier in the same year. With some waterstains, otherwise in good condition.

Vertrekkende vloot Johan Maurits van Nassau naar Brazilië - Salomon Savery naar Frans Post, 1647
1645. ?Classis Navium qua hinc discessit comes Mauritius Praefectus? 17e-eeuwse medici waren zeer geïnteresseerd in remedies tegen allerlei onbekende tropische zi … [Click Below for Full Description]

Despite this, they do wish him a happy reign should he repent, and the Kirk would later protest the execution of the king. "The most serious association of the king with blood guilt during the first Civil War was in the admonition of the General Assembly of the Kirk of Scotland... the tone the Kirk adopted towards Charles in 1645 - grave and righteous indignation towards a guilty sinner rather than the accustomed and expected reverence for the monarch - showed the significance of blood guilt as a levelling idea... their warning to Charles contributed to undermining his prestige and sacred character. MILTON, JOHN. (MARRIAGE)
[Thomas Paine and Matthew Simmons], London, 1645. 185 x 138 mm. (7 1/4 x 5 3/8"). 4 p.l., 40, 37-98 pp. FIRST EDITION. Late 19th or early 20th century sympathetic sheepskin, raised bands, red morocco label. Coleridge 67; Shawcross 72; Wickenheiser 303; Wing M-2184; ESTC R212199. Some (naturally occurring?) variation in the color of the leather, lower board with short (pre-existing?) cut to leather, title page trimmed close at foot, grazing imprint, occasional corner creases or rust spots, but an excellent copy, internally clean and crisp, in an unworn binding. This is one of four tracts arguing in favor of permitting divorce, from a poet who was also a prolific polemicist. Milton (1608-74) took a very active interest in the political questions of his day and expressed his views in eloquent tracts, but perhaps no issue was as personal to him as the call to liberalize divorce laws. At the age of 34, Milton had taken a bride half his age, and young Mary Powell had left him to return to her parents just a few weeks later. Frustrated by his inability to extract himself from this alliance, Milton took on the restrictive divorce laws of England, issuing "The Doctrine and Discipline of Divorce" the following year. A second, heavily revised edition of that work and a second tract, "The Judgement of Martin Bucer Concerning Divorce," came out in 1644. The following year, Milton published the present work, citing biblical justifications for ending a marriage. ("Tetrachordon" refers to four-stringed musical instruments, and is intended to describe Milton's harmonizing of the four "strin … [Click Below for Full Description]

Pierre Vander Aa
Pierre Vander Aa, Leide, 1645. V.- VIAJE ÁFRICA. MAPA. [Click Below for Full Description]

AUBERY DU MAURIER Jacques
A Paris, chez Sebastien Cramoisy et Gabriel Cramoisy, 1645.?. ?In-4, vélin de l?époque, titre à l?encre sur le dos, [32]-230-[2] pages. Bel exemplaire.? Amsterdam : Johannes Blaeu, The Blaeu family were the pre-eminent Dutch atlas-publishers of their period. The family published their first terrestrial atlas in 1630, with the multi-volume Atlas Novus launched in 1635. They continued to enlarge the atlas over the next thirty-five years, adding new maps to expand sections, but also preparing separate volumes devoted to England and Wales, Scotland and China. This is the third volume of the Atlas Novus, devoted to Italy, the coverage of that county expanded to almost fill an entire volume, with a small section at the end of Greece. [FORTIFICATION & APPLIED MATHEMATICS].
A collection of four manuscripts (plus two additional leaves) devoted to fortification (beautifully illustrated with 16 pen and ink drawings of barriers and building tools and equipment); plain and solid geometry and its applications, with problems and solutions, possibly from an examination (with 14 line diagrams plus 2 on an added leaf); maritime navigation, triangulation, determination of longitude, compass corrections and correcting a course for currents, with problems and solutions, possibly from an examination (with about 50 line diagrams); and the surveying of land and dikes and the conversion of measurements, with problems and solutions, possibly from an examination (with a double-page sundial, and a similar sundial on an added leaf).Manuscript 2 lacks 2 or possibly more leaves of text, in ad 4 the added leaf with the full-page sundial has a tear into the sundial and a large transparent brown stain. Many of the leaves have tattered edges or small stains. In spite of these defects, the manuscripts form valuable primary sources for education in applied mathematics. The splendid drawings in ad 1, with extensive accompanying text, provide very detailed information about barriers used against enemy infantry and cavalry ca. 1645, and about the tools and other equipment used to build fortifications at that time, and the two sundials in the ca. 1747 manuscript are especially interesting.

Pietro TESTA detto "Il Lucchesino" (Lucca 1611 - Roma 1650)
Acquaforte, circa 1645-50, firmata in lastra in basso a sinistra. [Click Below for Full Description]

Pietro TESTA detto "Il Lucchesino" (Lucca 1611 - Roma 1650)
"Acquaforte, 1645 circa, firmata nell'immagine nell'angolo in basso a sinistra: ""PTesta. in: fec. Romae". "Etching, 1645 circa, signed in the image in the lower left corner: "PTesta. in: fec. Romae". First state Go … [Click Below for Full Description]

Salvatore CASTIGLIONE (Genova 1620 - dopo il 1676)
Acquaforte originale 1645, firmata e datata in lastra in basso a sinistra. Etching, 1645, signed and dated on the plate at the lower left. A fine impression of the only state, on contemporary laid paper, trimmed on the platemark or with narrow margins, generally in very good conditions. Brother of Giovanni Benedetto, whose artistic carrier and interests he took care of, Salvatore Castiglione made his only graphic work, at the age of twenty-five. Today the plate is conserved at the Calcografia Nazionale of Rome, while the preparatory drawing belongs to a private collection. Provenance: John Tetlow (Lugt 2868) Bartsch 1.

Giovanni Benedetto CASTIGLIONE detto "Il Grechetto" (Genova 1616 - Mantova 1670)
Acquaforte, circa 1645-50, firmata in lastra in alto a sinistra. Magnifico esemplare. Etching, 1645-50 circa, signed on upper left plate. Magnificent work, rich in shades, printed on contemporary laid paper without watermark, trimmer to platemark or with thin margins, in excellent condition. From the series I piccoli ritratti, inspired to the parallel engravings of Rembrandt and Lievens. Rembrandt's works were no doubt a great source of inspiration for this subject. The Genoese artist knew for sure the production of his Dutch colleague and, very likely, he also bought some of them. Castiglione's graphic works present a close relationship with Rembrandt's, both in style and subjects. Both used to engrave their plates with free strokes and both sought to achieve strong chiaroscuro contrasts in their prints. Magnificent example. TIB 032, Bellini 23.

Giovanni Benedetto CASTIGLIONE detto "Il Grechetto" (Genova 1616 - Mantova 1670)
Etching, 1645 circa, without signature. Example in the second state with plate oxidations on upper right corner. Beautiful work printed on contemporary laid paper with illegible watermark and thin margins, signs of central paper fold, otherwise in excellent condition. The Nativity was a subject Grechetto depicted more than once in his career and it was one among his most famous monotypes. The preparatory drawing is kept at the Windsor Castle. "This treatise on optics includes a map of the full moon - the first on a reasonably large scale. Rheita is noted in the history of optics for his invention of the erecting eyepiece. It is ironic that his lunar map is one of the first to have the south pole at the top, showing the moon inverted, as it appears through an astronomical telescope without his eyepiece ... Apud Adrianum Wijngaerde Et Franciscum Moiardum 1645 Very Scarce second Edition of Francis Bacon's Celebrated Masterpiece of Scientific Thought You Will Love This Book About the Author/Work: "At a time when scholars still relied on classical authority and metaphysical speculation to learn about the world they lived in, Bacon conceived a new means of acquiring true knowledge of the world via observation, experiment and inductive reasoning--that type of logical thinking that ascends from specific facts to the establishment of general laws and principles. Bacon saw this novum organum, or 'new instrument' as the means of bringing about a 'great revolution' (instauratio magna) in thought. Once taught the new experimental method, everyone would be capable of engaging in scientific investigation, unlocking the secrets of nature and applying the results (ideally) for the betterment of humankind. Bacon's vision of science inspired the subsequent foundation of the first scientific academies, and also opened up the question of science's relationship with government and society." Intended as a six-part work on a new method of investigating the natural world, novum organum, the new instrument or new method, was never completed and only fragments of it were published. WILDE, Jacob and Maria de.
, . . Grinke 61; Murray I, p. 38 & III, p. 272; Tavernier, Russia and the Low Countries 3178. First and only edition of an attractive display of the statues of the Museum Wildeanum, once housed on the Keizersgracht in Amsterdam. The Dutch tax collector Jacob de Wilde (1645-1721) began the collection, containing gems, coins, scientific instruments and statues. "This attractive account of a Dutch cabinet of the late seventeenth century is as much a eulogy of Maria de Wilde's gifts as an engraver as of her father's museum" (Grinke). The 60 plates by Maria de Wilde (1682-1729) show the ancient Egyptian, Greek and Roman statues in the museum. The 6 text leaves include a brief introduction and several laudatory poems directed at Maria de Wilde and her engravings. The collection drew some important visitors, including the Russian tsar Peter the Great in 1697, whose visit is illustrated on the engraved folding plate. After De Wilde's death, the tsar acquired part of the collection for his "Kunstkamera", the first museum in Russia, which was completed in 1727.Some minor thumbing and some occasional small spots, not affecting the illustrations, otherwise in very good condition.
