Daniel Featley, D.D.
London, England: 1645. Fairly GOOD condition for a book almost 400 years old. The cover is a little bit tattered and there are some slights stains on various pages, but the book is still intact. The cover might be original. This is an important book from the Reformation era, and a very rare first edition which I purchased a few years ago from a dealer in Australia. It is written by Daniel Featley, one of the translators of the King James Version in 1611. Late in life, he had a famous debate at Southwark with some members of Churches of Christ (later identified with Baptists in England) over the legitimacy of infant baptism, whether it was right for those baptized as infants in the Church of England to be rebaptized as adults, and whether the Church of England was a legitimate institution. Featley had grown out of favor with the authorities, so this was an attempt to defend the status quo versus separatist and puritan forces and perhaps reestablish his mainstream reputation with the powers that be. Featley strongly defends infant baptism and attacks those who would rebaptize converts later as adults. He defends the English "Book of Common Prayer," the Anglican priesthood, and high-church traditions that his detractors associated with Roman Catholic heresy. I think it is fair to say that Mr. Featley overstates his case and offers several specious and prejudicial arguments. His arrogance as a learned scholar is not hard to detect in these pages, but the case he offers leaves something to be desired. I believe his opponents actually got the better of him in the exchange. HOLLAR, Wenceslaus
[Antwerp], 1645. Hollar's handsome Virginian Etched portrait, small repair lower right First state, without the * after the date, of a handsome half-length portrait, identified by Hollar as being of a twenty-three-year old man from Virginia. Adorned with a beaded shell necklace, an ornamental headband from which hangs a row of teeth, and facial tattoos, the young man turns towards the artist with an enigmatic smile. The 'sitter' has been identified by George R. Hamell, as a Munsee-Delaware Algonquian-speaking warrior called Jaques, who was transported to Amsterdam from New Amsterdam in 1644. Probably from the Lenapehoking territory - a region encompassing the modern-day western Long Island, New York, New Jersey, the Eastern Pennsylvania area, and the Hudson Valley, "north from the river's mouth to about Catskill on the west bank and Tivoli on the east, then west to the upper Delaware Valley, and east to about the New York – Connecticut border" (Stama). He was probably captured in the early 1640s, in the then recently founded New Netherland colony, during the brutal "Governor Keift's War".Willem Kieft (1597-1647) became director of the new colony in September of 1637. In 1639, he "initiated a policy of levying taxes of maize and furs on the local Indian tribes. Taxes and misunderstandings eventually led to a full-scale, though sporadic, Dutch-Indian war, which raged on and off from 1640 to 1645. Kieft overrode the objections of his colonists and authorized a brutal massacre of Weckquaskee Indians at Pavonia (25–26 Feb. 1643). This short-term victory made the Indian war more … [Click Below for Full Description]

Amsterdam: Blaeu, 1645. Condition: Very Good. Hand-colored copper-engraving of Eastern Europe, depicting "Sclavonia, Croatia, Bosnia cum Dalmatiae Parte" and showing the Danube River and its tributaries across the Balkans and "the political divisions of Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia, Serbia and Dalmatia". At the top of the map are, respectively, the brilliantly-colored coats of arms of The Venetian Republic, The Hapsburg Monarchy, and The Ottoman Empire. Mercator's cartouche is in top right corner, below which are two distance gauges -- German and Italian -- and a ship in the lower left corner, in the Golfo Di Venetia (Gulf of Venice). Vertical fold (as called for). Some faint, thin bleed-through "trails" to text-side from hand-coloring on map side, and presence of 7 3-inch pieces of tape to edges reveals most likely, matting and mounting at some point in its history. Edited by Willem Janszoon Blaeu, using the original cartographic projections of Gerard Mercator. Grandami, J.
La Flèche, George Griveau, 1645. Small 4to (20.0 x 15.3 cm). Engraved title page, [vi], 162 pp. [1-24; 33-170]; six engraved plates (of which three larger, folded), 23 (groups of) large, engraved text illustrations (some occupying a whole page), one table in the text. Early to mid-19th century polished quarter calf over marbled boards. Spine with gilt lines and ornaments, and two red morocco labels with gilt title and date. Red edges. First edition of a beautifully illustrated attack on Copernicus's heliocentric world view by the French Jesuit priest Jacques Grandami (1588-1672). Grandami based much of his "evidence" on observations of magnetism. The spine foot bears the year 1644, probably based on the date of approbation (23 July, 1644), but it was published in 1645. As noted by another bookseller, "ABPC/RBH list only two copies sold since 1942 (neither of them presentation copies): Honeyman 1979, £700 (cont. calf worn, one plate torn and repaired), this subsequently offered by Howell in 1981 for $3250; Christie's 2016, £7500 (modern binding, uncut)". Plate count is difficult: there are six plates with blank versos, one plate (opposite p. 140) with two figures and a page numbering but with a blank verso; and 23 illustrations with page numbering on 21 text leaves. The total plate and text illustration count is therefore either six and 25, or seven and 23. Page numbering erroneously jumping from 24 to 33, thus without loss. Wax seal removed from title page and mounted on rear pastedown. Printed title page lacking. One illustration touching an edge; a few text sections very … [Click Below for Full Description]

Pietro TESTA detto "Il Lucchesino"
Acquaforte, 1645 circa, firmata nell'immagine nell'angolo in basso a sinistra: "PTesta. in: fec. Romae".
Noneth … [Click Below for Full Description]

1645. Alden & Landis 647/51 (6 copies); Asher 225 & pp. 192-194; Borba de Moraes, p. 200; Knuttel 5554; Sabin 15933; STCN (6 copies); not in Van Doorninck. First and only edition of a rare pamphlet defending Portugal against the claims of the Dutch Government and the West India Company (WIC) in Brazil: one of the earliest and one of the three "most remarkable works" published by Portugal's supporters in the Netherlands (Asher, p. 194). In an effort to take back Brazil from the Dutch, the Portuguese had supported a local revolt in 1645 and the hostilities on land and sea between the Portuguese and the WIC had escalated rapidly. Portugal was suing for peace, and the present pamphlet presents their side. In a series of questions and answers, it sets forth the Dutch reservations about the peace and distrust of Portugal, and attempts point by point to refute all arguments against a settlement. The author and printer of the pamphlet have not been identified, but the author himself refers to his own Vertooch aen de . Staten Generael , published earlier in the same year. With some waterstains, otherwise in good condition.
