Giovanni Benedetto CASTIGLIONE detto "Il Grechetto" (Genova 1616 - Mantova 1670)
Etching, 1645 circa, without signature. Example in the second state with plate oxidations on upper right corner. Beautiful work printed on contemporary laid paper with illegible watermark and thin margins, signs of central paper fold, otherwise in excellent condition. The Nativity was a subject Grechetto depicted more than once in his career and it was one among his most famous monotypes. The preparatory drawing is kept at the Windsor Castle. Pietro TESTA detto "Il Lucchesino" (Lucca 1611 - Roma 1650)
"Acquaforte, 1645 circa, firmata nell'immagine nell'angolo in basso a sinistra: ""PTesta. in: fec. Romae". Blaeu, Willem (after Gerard Mercator
Blaeu, 1645. Map. Hand-colored copper-engraving of Eastern Europe, depicting "Sclavonia, Croatia, Bosnia cum Dalmatiae Parte" and showing the Danube River and its tributaries across the Balkans and "the political divisions of Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia, Serbia and Dalmatia". At the top of the map are, respectively, the brilliantly-colored coats of arms of The Venetian Republic, The Hapsburg Monarchy, and The Ottoman Empire. Mercator's cartouche is in top right corner, below which are two distance gauges -- German and Italian -- and a ship in the lower left corner, in the Golfo Di Venetia (Gulf of Venice). Vertical fold (as called for). Some faint, thin bleed-through "trails" to text-side from hand-coloring on map side, and presence of 7 3-inch pieces of tape to edges reveals most likely, matting and mounting at some point in its history. Edited by Willem Janszoon Blaeu, using the original cartographic projections of Gerard Mercator. "Sclavonia, Croatia, Bosnia cum Dalmatiae Parte" shows the Danube River and its tributaries across the Balkans and delineates "the political divisions of Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia, Serbia and Dalmatia". At the top of the map are, respectively, the brilliantly-colored coats of arms of The Venetian Republic, The Hapsburg Monarchy, and The Ottoman Empire. Giovanni Benedetto CASTIGLIONE detto "Il Grechetto" (Genova 1616 - Mantova 1670)
Acquaforte, circa 1645-50, firmata in lastra in alto a sinistra. Magnifico esemplare. Etching, 1645-50 circa, signed on upper left plate. Magnificent work, rich in shades, printed on contemporary laid paper without watermark, trimmer to platemark or with thin margins, in excellent condition. From the series I piccoli ritratti, inspired to the parallel engravings of Rembrandt and Lievens. Rembrandt's works were no doubt a great source of inspiration for this subject. The Genoese artist knew for sure the production of his Dutch colleague and, very likely, he also bought some of them. Castiglione's graphic works present a close relationship with Rembrandt's, both in style and subjects. Both used to engrave their plates with free strokes and both sought to achieve strong chiaroscuro contrasts in their prints. Magnificent example. TIB 032, Bellini 23.

chez les Elseviers, A Leide, 1645. In folio (mm. 310x210), pp. (14), 224, legatura in piena pergamena coeva. [Click Below for Full Description]

TORELLI, Giacomo 1608-1678
[Paris], 1645. IFF XVII:3, p. 64, 740. Bianchi: Feste theatrali per La finta pazza (Paris, 1645); there is disagreement about whether the engraving is by Noël Cochin (1622-1695) or his brother Nicolas (1610-1686). Giacomo Torelli was one of the most important stage designers of the early Baroque, contributing to the success of opera's spectacular nature. His most revolutionary invention was a set of machinery that allowed the entire scene to be changed at once; the action could thus proceed at a much quicker pace than previously possible. After working in Venice, Torelli was brought to Paris, where he installed his machinery in the Palais Royal and the Hôtel du Petit Bourbon. It was in the latter that, in 1645, Torelli designed the sets for a choreographed production of Francesco Sacrati's La finta pazza (1641), the first public performance of an Italian opera in France. "Torelli's sets created a concrete, clearly defined area which, whatever its symbolic significance, attempted to represent a milieu with a particular character. Such a conception was appropriate to the small ensemble scenes of Venetian opera and met the increasing preference for historical subjects and the realistic tendencies fostered by the growing influence of middle-class audiences. The rhythmic articulation of the stage by the transverse and longitudinal lines of the sets, an approach shared by other Venetian designers such as Giovanni Burnacini, focussed attention on the acting zone and enhanced the development of the design of interiors. 17e-eeuwse medici waren zeer geïnteresseerd in remedies tegen allerlei onbekende tropische zi … [Click Below for Full Description]

[PASSE, Crispijn de (the younger) and Jan VOS].
Extremely rare third edition, the first with poems by Jan Vos and double the size of the two earlier editions, of a description (intended as souvenir) of the "Oude Doolhof" (literally: old labyrinth) of Amsterdam, a sort of amusement park at the Looiersgracht. It was the first public doolhof, founded by the wine merchant and inn-keeper Vincent Jacobsz. Coster at the beginning of the 17th century. The Doolhof was a sculpture garden with a labyrinth, exhibiting fountains, sculptures and automata, showing historical, mythical and biblical figures and spectacles. The booklet was first published ca. 1645 by Crispyn Passe the younger in 4 leaves, and other versions followed soon after. For the present edition one full-page and one folding engraved plate were added, together with poems by Jan Vos (1612-1667), the most popular Dutch playwright of his time. With the outer corner of the foot of the title-page and the first plate torn off and two minor waterstains on the title-page, otherwise in very good condition.Franken 1375 (note); Meijer, "Het oude doolhof te Amsterdam", in: Oud Holland I (1883), pp. 119-135; Spies, De Amsterdamse doolhoven, pp. 70-71; STCN (2 copies); WorldCat (same 2 copies)..

VAN LANGREN, Michiel Florentszoon
[Strasbourg]: 1645. No Binding. [Strasbourg], [ca. 1645]. 477 x 406 mm. Single broad sheet of laid paper with engraved lunar map, paper with grapes watermarks. Very little even browning, a few insignifican spots, central vertical fold, faint vertical crease, a few minute holes (only visible when the map is held up to light). Overall a fine copy of this rare lunar map. ---- Exceptionally rare Strasbourg forgery of Michiel Van Langren's pioneering map of the Moon, obviously copied directly from a third-state example of the original in the library of the University of Strasbourg. A Flemish astronomer and engineer born into a well-known family of cartographers, Van Langren set out to create a more accurate, scientific representation of the lunar surface based on the latest telescopic observations. Based on 30 of his own drawings of various lunar phases, his work was one of the first maps of the Moon. Although the text beneath his original map, published in a limited run in 1645, explicitly forbade unauthorized copies, this example appears to be just that. Van Langren based his place names on saints, royalty, scientists, patrons, and other people of note. He even named one of the seas, Mare Langreni, after his own family. "This copy, which is devote of the five quotations and lengthy explanatory text of the original, is clearly a counterfeit map, not only because of the missing legend, but also because the engraving is inferior and the transcription sloppy, several names being mis-spelled or absent. An intriguing point is that six of Van Langren's original names have been replac … [Click Below for Full Description]

CARDIM, Antonio Francesco.
Rare first edition of the French translation of an important Jesuit account of the Far East by Antonio Francesco Cardim and an important account of the Malabar region in India by Francesco Barretto. Originally published in Italian, also in 1645, they here published together, translated by François Lahier.Although the title of Cardim's work might suggest it discusses only Japan, it is especially important for its extensive accounts of Thailand and Vietnam, among the earliest we have, and also describes St. Paul's College in Macau, China, the first Western University in the Far East, where Cardim served as rector from 1632 to 1636. It covers the history, religions (notably Buddhism) and customs of the regions. Barretto's account of Malabar "begins with a brief but informative discussion of conditions in Malabar, followed by a review of affairs in the missions to the St. Thomas Christians and to Cochin, Ceylon, Jaffna, Madura, Mannar, the Coromandel coast, and Bengal" (Lach & Van Kley). With some mostly minor and marginal water stains in the last quires, more serious in the last few leaves, leading to some damage and an old restoration in the last leaf with no loss of text. Binding a bit soiled and slightly wrinkled. Still a good copy of a rare work on the Far East and India.Alt-Japan-Katalog 278 (1 copy); Cordier, Japonica, col. 360; WorldCat (5 copies); cf. [WIC].
First and only edition of a rare pamphlet defending Portugal against the claims of the Dutch Government and the West India Company (WIC) in Brazil: one of the earliest and one of the three "most remarkable works" published by Portugal's supporters in the Netherlands (Asher, p. 194). In an effort to take back Brazil from the Dutch, the Portuguese had supported a local revolt in 1645 and the hostilities on land and sea between the Portuguese and the WIC had escalated rapidly. Portugal was suing for peace, and the present pamphlet presents their side. In a series of questions and answers, it sets forth the Dutch reservations about the peace and distrust of Portugal, and attempts point by point to refute all arguments against a settlement. The author and printer of the pamphlet have not been identified, but the author himself refers to his own Vertooch aen de ... Staten Generael , published earlier in the same year. With some waterstains, otherwise in good condition.Alden & Landis 647/51 (6 copies); Asher 225 & pp. 192-194; Borba de Moraes, p. 200; Knuttel 5554; Sabin 15933; STCN (6 copies); not in Van Doorninck..

The Kirk's remonstrance professes allegiance to the crown, but calls on Charles I to repent before God for "shedding the blood of many thousands of your majesties best subjects, for your permitting the masse and other idolatory... for your not punishing of public scandals and much prophanes in and about your court, for the shutting of our ears from the humble, and just desires of your faithful subjects, for your complying too much with the Popish party many wayes". Despite this, they do wish him a happy reign should he repent, and the Kirk would later protest the execution of the king. "The most serious association of the king with blood guilt during the first Civil War was in the admonition of the General Assembly of the Kirk of Scotland... the tone the Kirk adopted towards Charles in 1645 - grave and righteous indignation towards a guilty sinner rather than the accustomed and expected reverence for the monarch - showed the significance of blood guilt as a levelling idea... their warning to Charles contributed to undermining his prestige and sacred character. MILTON, JOHN. (MARRIAGE)
[Thomas Paine and Matthew Simmons], London, 1645. 185 x 138 mm. (7 1/4 x 5 3/8"). 4 p.l., 40, 37-98 pp. FIRST EDITION. Late 19th or early 20th century sympathetic sheepskin, raised bands, red morocco label. Coleridge 67; Shawcross 72; Wickenheiser 303; Wing M-2184; ESTC R212199. Some (naturally occurring?) variation in the color of the leather, lower board with short (pre-existing?) cut to leather, title page trimmed close at foot, grazing imprint, occasional corner creases or rust spots, but an excellent copy, internally clean and crisp, in an unworn binding. This is one of four tracts arguing in favor of permitting divorce, from a poet who was also a prolific polemicist. Milton (1608-74) took a very active interest in the political questions of his day and expressed his views in eloquent tracts, but perhaps no issue was as personal to him as the call to liberalize divorce laws. At the age of 34, Milton had taken a bride half his age, and young Mary Powell had left him to return to her parents just a few weeks later. Frustrated by his inability to extract himself from this alliance, Milton took on the restrictive divorce laws of England, issuing "The Doctrine and Discipline of Divorce" the following year. A second, heavily revised edition of that work and a second tract, "The Judgement of Martin Bucer Concerning Divorce," came out in 1644. The following year, Milton published the present work, citing biblical justifications for ending a marriage. ("Tetrachordon" refers to four-stringed musical instruments, and is intended to describe Milton's harmonizing of the four "strin … [Click Below for Full Description]

Pierre Vander Aa
Pierre Vander Aa, Leide, 1645. V.- VIAJE ÁFRICA. MAPA. [Click Below for Full Description]
