BLAEU, Jan
1645. Highly important and one of the "earliest" printed maps of Devon. Influenced by "Speed's" early map, the decorative coats of arms are the same. The Blaeu map is much clearer in its line and less cluttered (there is no inset of Exeter.) The decorative cartouche containing the title has a cherub seated on top holding a cane, two seventeenth century merchants negotiate over rolls of cloth; sheep, fish and two birds surround the rest of the cartouche all giving a flavour of the various industries of the County. The Royal Standard is located in the top corner. A couple of small Ms annotations in an early hand. Beautifully contemporary style full wash hand colouring Batten & Bennett, 12. . 495 x 390mm.

[DUYFKEN] HARMENSZ, Wolfert.
Amsterdam: Jan Jansz, 1645. Oblong folio, 28 pp.; bound in full dark-brown oasis. First edition of one of the first Dutch voyages across the Indian Ocean, published as one of the pieces that make up Commelin's voyage collection Begin ende Voortgangh.Harmensz was in joint command of the third major voyage by the Dutch to the East-Indies, in 1601-1603, the so-called Moluccan Fleet which set out to establish a new Dutch presence in the East Indies. The five ships reached Bantam, Java, at the end of 1601 where they were confronted by a substantial Portuguese fleet of thirty ships under the command of Andrea Fortade de Mendoça. Harmensz's conquest of the Portuguese fleet marked a turning point in the history of the region, bringing to a close the domination of the Portuguese and Spanish in the Spice Trade to Europe.Of special interest to us today is that one of the five ships of Harmensz's fleet was the Duyfken, then under the command of Willem Cornelisz Schouten. This was her first voyage; returning to Europe in 1603, she was quickly turned round and came back to the East Indies in the fleet of van der Hagen with Willem Janszoon as skipper. On her second voyage she was sent separately to the southeast, and subsequently reached Cape York Peninsula and charted the Australian coastline. The mention of the Duyfken in Harmensz's text is one of remarkably few printed references to the ship. Waterstains in margins but in good condition.

SEVERINO, M.A.
Noribergae, Literis Endterianis, 1645. 4to (185 x 140mm). pp. (24), including an engraved frontispiece and 2 engraved portraits, 408, (34), and many woodcuts in the text. Contemporary calf, a bit rubbed. "The earliest comprehensive treatise on comparative anatomy" (Cole p. 132). "It is the first printed book to deal exclusively with Zootomy. It is exceedingly rare" (Wood p. 564). The beautifully engraved frontispiece illustrates the meeting of Democritus and Hippocrates. "The first crude attempt at comparative anatomy was made by Marco Aurelio Severino (1580-1656), whose 'Zootomia Democritae' (1645), antedates Malpighi, Leeuwenhoek, and Swammerdam. The woodcuts show the viscera of birds, fishes, and mammals, with some phases of their development, and slight as are the comparative features, the book is the only thing of its kind before the 18th century" (Garsison p. 252). Severino corresponded with many important physicians and scientists such as William Harvey, John Houghton, Thomas Bartholin, Ole Worms, Volckamer and J.Vesling.//The second portrait is a beautifully engraved portrait of Severino, the first portrait shows Giulio Iasolino, a professor of Napels. Some browning.//Provenance: Bookplate of South Library (1860), and small blind stamp on first 3 leaves.//Wood p. 564; Nissen ZBI,.

Carochi, Horatio:
Mexico: Juan Ruyz, 1645.. [6],132 leaves. Small quarto. 20th-century blue morocco, spine ornately gilt, gilt inner dentelles, a.e.g. Internally clean. Fine. This first edition of Carochi's grammar, a legendary rarity that is widely held to be the best Nahuatl grammar in the classical tradition. Palau calls it "actualmente rarísima," while Pilling, writing in 1885, noted: "It is excessively rare, and was so even 200 years ago." Its continuing importance is shown in that in 2001, James Lockhart, a leading U.S. scholar of Nahuatl, published a new grammar of Nahuatl that he based on Carochi's work because Carochi's language is so close to classical Nahuatl and his grasp of nuances was extraordinary. Lockhart notes of Carochi that his work "[is] studded with authentic examples [of the spoken language] from the time" (Lockhart, NAHUATL AS WRITTEN [Stanford, 2001], p. viii). Carochi, an Italian Jesuit missionary who arrived in Mexico in 1605 and died there in 1666, is considered to have been one of the three best scholars of the colonial era to turn his attention to the study of the native languages of Mexico. Juan Ruíz, the printer of this fine work, was an important figure in colonial Mexican book arts, and his are among the most elegant books produced during the 17th century in the New World. Here he provides handsome typography, accented with wonderful and large woodcut initials, some historiated, a xylographic tail-piece, and an extremely well done half- page, woodcut coat of arms of the work's dedicatee. Boschini Marco
In-folio (2) c. (1) c. [Click Below for Full Description]

1645. 4to. 3 pts. in 1 vol. (14), 650 pp. (6), 388 pp. 207, (5) pp. With 2 engr. title pages and 1 engr. frontispiece. Contemp. blindstamped pigskin over wooden boards on 4 raised double bands with 2 driven brass clasps. Ms. spine and shelfmark labels. Second complete German edition. Egidio Albertino's classic Baroque translation also contains de Guevara's popular mirror for magistrates, "Reloj de principes", containing many hints about child care, education, as well as gynecological and cosmetic advice (cf. Hayn/G. II, 704). - Fine roll-tooled binding shows the arms of the Roman Empire, Austria, Lower and Upper Austria (Haebler I, 329, 5) and platestamps of Justitia and Fortuna (I, 89, II & III). Haebler ascribes the tools to the Nuremberg bookbinder Hans Pfister (d. 1600) or the Wittenberg master Hans Dietz (d. 1582): thus, the present volume serves as a fine example for the continuing use of Renaissance stamps for many decades of the 17th century. - Browned and stained throughout; several thumb indices (the last one torn out). Binding rubbed, but altogether nicely preserved. VD 17, 23:000185K. Dünnhaupt, 236, 53.1. Goedeke II, 583, 42. Palau 110.076. Cf. Faber du Faur 901.

FAIRFAX, Thomas
Edw. Husband, Printer to the Honorable House of Commons, 1645 February 24 16mo. Wrappers. 7pp. Good +. Moderate even age toning, and right margin tightly trimmed (not affecting text), but overall tight, clean and attractive. Typically lengthy front wrapper title and subtitles within ornamental border devices. (Above-quoted title continues: "... Together with all the particulars in that Expedition. Also Another Letter from a Gentleman of quality, of the whole passages of this great Victory. Both which were read in the House of Commons.") Great Torrington was the sight of one of the major battles in the first of the two English Civil Wars, resulting in the defeat of the Royalist cause. This pamphlet relates in detail, among other things, the events of February 16, in which Fairfax and his circa 10,000 strong Parliamentarian troops entered Torrington and engaged the Royalists. Fairfax ordered that two hundred prisoners be kept in the church, not knowing that was where the Royalists had stored "above Eighty barrels of powder, as is reported, besides other Ammunition)" and "either purposely by some desperate prisoner, or casually by some Souldier, the powder was fired, whereby the Church was quite blown up, the prisoners and most of our men that guarded them were killed, and overwhelmed in the ruines, the houses of the Town shaken and shattered, and our men all the Town over much indangered by the stones, Timber and Lead, which with the blast were carryed up very high, and scatter'd in great abundance all the Town over, and beyond...." First Edition published in England (the Two Treatises was first published at Paris in 1644, while Digby and his family were in exile). Digby's Two Treatises is a landmark work in several fields of early science. It is the first fully developed expression of atomism or corpuscular theory; the first important defense of Harvey on the circulation in English; a modern presentation of the nervous system predating Descartes; and a ground-breaking work in embryology. It also contains the first recorded patch-test for allergy; the fullest early account in English of teaching lip-reading; and material on conditioning anticipating Pavlov. Digby introduced atomism to England, and in his Two Treatises he provided "the first fully developed atomistic system of the seventeenth century" (Petersson, Sir Kenelm Digby, p. 187). VERHOEFF, Pieter Willemsz.
(Amsterdam, Joannes Janssonius, 1645).Oblong 8vo. Modern wrappers. With plate depicting the fortress on Banda. 214 pp. (text set in two columns).* First Dutch edition; extracted from Commelin's collection of voyages. - This account of Verhoeff's voyages is a composite piece. It starts with the journal by the chief merchant Johan de Moelre and continued, after he was killed, by the fleet's treasurer Jacques Le Febure. Followed by extracts from the journal of Reynier Dirckszoon, the pilot aboard one of the ships which sailed to Japan, and the journal of Jacob Specx and Pieter Segerszoon also on Japan. This piece is followed by a report by Samuel Bloemaert about trade and negotiations on Borneo and Appolonius Schotte's accounts of the Moluccas and Gillis Seys report of 1627 on Amboina. These materials constitute a rich source of information about the expansion of Dutch power in the Moluccas, the negatiations with the inlanders, the war with the Spaniards, the details of trade, and the daily life of the Dutch stationed there. This account of Verhoeff's voyage was never separately reprinted during the 17th century. (Lach & Kley, III, p.471-472). Landwehr, VOC, 250.
