Heers, Henricus ab (ou Henri Von Heer), de Tongres :
Leyde, Adrianus Wyngaerden et Franciscus Moiardus, 1645 ; in-12 ; plein vélin ivoire rigide, titre manuscrit au dos (reliure de l'époque) ; (1) f. blanc, (22), 159, (15) pp. (index) ; (8), 254, (23) pp., (1 bl.), (2) ff. blancs. Rare.
1645 - Etching on laid paper. New Hollstein's first state (of two); 16 x 13 cm. Foxing and acidification with associated discolouration visible throughout sheet. The sheet has been trimmed down slightly but this has not affected print area. The paper is very soft and thin with some wrinkling throughout. There is a small tear to the upper left edge and a small loss to the lower left corner, the latter does not interrupt the printed area however. Print sheet is affixed to card mount along right edge. Mounted and framed. A beautiful etching by Rembrandt, who often depicted scenes from the Jewish Bible and had produced about three hundred etchings during his lifetime. The work relates to the Akedah (the ritual sacrifice) episode. Obvious tension is felt in this scene, where Abraham and Isaac seen stopped along their way to the site of the sacrifice and Isaac is seen asking his father where is the lamb for the offering. Abraham explains by pointing upwards with one hand, while clasping his heart with the other, that God will provide the lamb. Isaac listens obediently as he holds the bound wood for the offering. Copies of this work are held in the collection of the Israel Museum in Jerusalem, The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and in the National Gallery of Art collection in Washington. The New Hollstein Dutch & Flemish Etchings, Engravings and Woodcuts, 1450-1700. no. 224, i/ii.

Original printed wrappers. First edition. - In 1645, Captain Cornelis Roobacker set out from Bandar Abbas with two small Dutch ships for the first trading mission to Basra, which could only be reached with small vessels in the shallow waters of the upper end of the Gulf. Three logbooks of this expedition have survived in the Dutch General State Archives; the only one of these to be published is the logbook no. 280a, here edited for the first and only time by A. Hotz. Among the plates are a modern map of the Gulf region as well as a 17th century Dutch nautical chart which the editor errouneously attributed to Roobacker. "Roobacker's ships had English charts on board, but Roobacker complained that they were very inaccurate [... He] made a chart of his travels between Laraq and Basra, with marks of depths and accurate notes on geographic latitude. This chart shows his progress up to Bubiyan" (Slot, The Origins of Kuwait [1991], p. 18). - Occasional slight foxing; a good copy of an important and much-quoted source. B. J. Alpini, Prosper & Bontius, Jacob.
1645. Small 4to (225 x 175 mm). 2 parts in one vol. (11), 150, (25) ff. 39, (1) ff. Title page printed in red and black; woodcut chapter initial and head-tail pieces, 2 text illustrations and 3 full-page woodcuts. Full vellum, title gilt on spine red label. Somewhat later edition of the first important work on the history of Egyptian medicine. Alpini (1553-1617) was an Italian physician and botanist who spent three years in Egypt studying botany and hygiene as a companion to the Venetian Consul Giorgio Emo. This work is considered "one of the earliest European studies of non-western medicine. Alpini's work dealt primarily with contemporary (i.e. Arabic) practices observed during his sojourn in Egypt. These included moxibustion - the production of counter-irritation by placing burning or heated material on the skin - which Alpini introduced into European medicine [...] Alpini also mentioned coffee for the first time in this work" (Norman). Jacobus Bontius (Jacques de Bondt, 1592-1631), whose work on Indian medicine is included, was a Dutch physician and botanist. He travelled to Persia and Indonesia to study the botany of the area. He was the first to study cholera on the island of Batavia in 1689, before it was known in Europe, and died on Java. His botanic and medical works were published after his death by Pisonius. He "was probably the first to regard tropical medicine as an independent branch of medical science. He spent the last four years of his life in the Dutch East Indies, and his book incorporates the experience he gained there. It is the first Dutch work on tropi … [Click Below for Full Description]

Contemp. blindstamped pigskin over wooden boards on 4 raised double bands with 2 driven brass clasps. Ms. spine and shelfmark labels. Second complete German edition. Egidio Albertino's classic Baroque translation also contains de Guevara's popular mirror for magistrates, "Reloj de principes", containing many hints about child care, education, as well as gynecological and cosmetic advice (cf. Hayn/G. II, 704). - Fine roll-tooled binding shows the arms of the Roman Empire, Austria, Lower and Upper Austria (Haebler I, 329, 5) and platestamps of Justitia and Fortuna (I, 89, II & III). Haebler ascribes the tools to the Nuremberg bookbinder Hans Pfister (d. 1600) or the Wittenberg master Hans Dietz (d. 1582): thus, the present volume serves as a fine example for the continuing use of Renaissance stamps for many decades of the 17th century. - Browned and stained throughout; several thumb indices (the last one torn out). Binding rubbed, but altogether nicely preserved. VD 17, 23:000185K. Dünnhaupt, 236, 53.1. Goedeke II, 583, 42. Palau 110.076. Cf. Faber du Faur 901.

[HERODOTUS] . DU-RYER P, Translator
Small folio Illustrated with engraved tile page in red and black, chapter headings and tail pieces original vellum over stiff boards, expertly recased with new head and tail bands, hand titled in brown ink on spine Herodotus (484 BC - c. 425 BC) is thought to have been born in Halicarnassus; he was at one time banished from his home to the island Samos by Lygdamis. He returned to Halicarnassus and participated in overthrowing the tyrant, however, he was not in favor with the citizens and left for Thurii, an Athenean led colony in southern Italy. He is thought to have died there. Cicero named Herodotus "Father of History." His "Histories" first appeared about 425 B.C. in Athens, and translated from the Greek (Ionian) into Latin by Laurentius Valla in about 1450, revised by Heusbach in 1537; Aldus Manutius published an edition in Greek in 1502 in Venice, and thereafter several editions in Greek and Latin appeared: 1541, 1565, 1584, 1592, 1594. He wrote in Ionian, which is a different language or dialect from Dorian used in Halicarnassus. He is considered "the Father of History" although he has also been referred to as "Father of Lies" for his subjective descriptions of peoples and events. Some of this is related to monies received or not received by Thebands, Corinthians, Athenians, etc. that he wrote about. When The Histories were collected, they were broken into nine parts, each named after the nine Muses with Clio, the Muse of History taking claim over the first book. The rest of the book follow … [Click Below for Full Description]

HOOGHE, Romeyn de.
Hollstein IX, p. 120, 103-108 (lacking frontispiece); Landwehr, De Hooghe book illustrator 38; STCN (7 copies). Rare first edition, with fine emblematic plates, illustrating the injustice and cruelty of the war waged by Louis XIV of France against the free and independent Dutch Republic. Romeyn de Hooghe (1645-1708) was unquestionably the most gifted and the most prolific Dutch book illustrator of the second half of the 17th century. His work displays the political grandeur and disasters of war in the Dutch Republic, including the disastrous year 1672, depicted dramatically and with great splendour. The large plates are richly designed and full of intricate emblems and allegories, fully explained in the accompanying text; an emblematic poem is added to each plate. With manuscript annotation in ink on pastedown. Slightly browned throughout with some thumbed margins, edges of frontispiece slightly frayed, otherwise in very good condition. Head of front board restored, binding otherwise good.

Pietro TESTA detto "Il Lucchesino" (Lucca 1611 - Roma 1650)
Acquaforte, circa 1645 - 50, firmata in lastra in basso a sinistra. [Click Below for Full Description]

SCHYRLAEUS DE RHEITA, Anton Maria.
Antwerp: Hieronymus Verdussen, 1645. First edition of this very rare and influential work in the history of the telescope, a remarkable copy, uncut in the original interim boards. Rheita "introduced a number of crucial improvements in his work, leading to a real breakthrough in telescope design. First, Rheita suggested a new and much better method of polishing lenses, leading to a strong reduction of deviations; secondly (and even more importantly), he found that a compound ocular, composed of three or four lenses, resulted in a much better quality than using only a single (compound) ocular" (Van Helden, p. 334). "This new polishing technique, together with the compound eyepiece, allowed for longer and longer telescopes, and the astronomical discoveries that went along with it, during the second half of the 17th century ... <em>Oculus Enoch et Eliae </em>referred to the binocular telescope, with Henoch and Elias each symbolizing one eye. With the same instrument, Rheita observed the bands on Jupiter, as he announced in a letter of 18 June 1651 to the Elector of Mainz ... Rheita's design of telescopes became known throughout Europe, mostly through telescopes produced by Wiesel in Augsburg. The same design was soon used in England by Richard Reeve (of Hartlib's circle), in Holland by Christiaan Huygens, in Italy by Giuseppi Campani, and in France by another Capuchin monk, Cherubin d'Orleans ... Rheita also published a map of the Moon in his <em>Oculus</em> <em>Enoch et Eliae. </em>With the exception of Francesco Fontana's unpublished lunar drawings of 1629 and 1630, this was … [Click Below for Full Description]

1645. Acquaforte originale 1645, firmata e datata in lastra in basso a sinistra. Etching, 1645, signed and dated on the plate at the lower left. A fine impression of the only state, on contemporary laid paper, trimmed on the platemark or with narrow margins, generally in very good conditions. Giovanni Benedetto CASTIGLIONE detto "Il Grechetto" (Genova 1616 - Mantova 1670)
Etching, 1645 circa, without signature. Example in the second state with plate oxidations on upper right corner. Beautiful work printed on contemporary laid paper with illegible watermark and thin margins, signs of central paper fold, otherwise in excellent condition. The Nativity was a subject Grechetto depicted more than once in his career and it was one among his most famous monotypes. The preparatory drawing is kept at the Windsor Castle. Giovanni Benedetto CASTIGLIONE detto "Il Grechetto" (Genova 1616 - Mantova 1670)
1645. Acquaforte, circa 1645 - 50, firmata in lastra in alto a sinistra. Magnifico esemplare. Etching, 1645 - 50 circa, signed on upper left plate. Magnificent work, rich in shades, printed on contemporary laid paper without watermark, trimmer to platemark or with thin margins, in excellent condition. From the series I piccoli ritratti, inspired to the parallel engravings of Rembrandt and Lievens. Rembrandt's works were no doubt a great source of inspiration for this subject. The Genoese artist knew for sure the production of his Dutch colleague and, very likely, he also bought some of them. Castiglione's graphic works present a close relationship with Rembrandt's, both in style and subjects. Both used to engrave their plates with free strokes and both sought to achieve strong chiaroscuro contrasts in their prints. Magnificent example. TIB 032, Bellini 23. 80 108

Vitello pieno periodo freddo (forse XVIII). Smooth indietro decorato.
