SCHYRLAEUS DE RHEITA, Anton Maria.
Antwerp: Hieronymus Verdussen, 1645. First edition of this very rare and influential work in the history of the telescope, a remarkable copy, uncut in the original interim boards. Rheita "introduced a number of crucial improvements in his work, leading to a real breakthrough in telescope design. First, Rheita suggested a new and much better method of polishing lenses, leading to a strong reduction of deviations; secondly (and even more importantly), he found that a compound ocular, composed of three or four lenses, resulted in a much better quality than using only a single (compound) ocular" (Van Helden, p. 334). "This new polishing technique, together with the compound eyepiece, allowed for longer and longer telescopes, and the astronomical discoveries that went along with it, during the second half of the 17th century ... Oculus Enoch et Eliae referred to the binocular telescope, with Henoch and Elias each symbolizing one eye. With the same instrument, Rheita observed the bands on Jupiter, as he announced in a letter of 18 June 1651 to the Elector of Mainz ... Rheita's design of telescopes became known throughout Europe, mostly through telescopes produced by Wiesel in Augsburg. The same design was soon used in England by Richard Reeve (of Hartlib's circle), in Holland by Christiaan Huygens, in Italy by Giuseppi Campani, and in France by another Capuchin monk, Cherubin d'Orleans ... Rheita also published a map of the Moon in his Oculus Enoch et Eliae. With the exception of Francesco Fontana's unpublished lunar drawings of 1629 and 1630, this was … [Click Below for Full Description]

1645. Acquaforte originale 1645, firmata e datata in lastra in basso a sinistra. Etching, 1645, signed and dated on the plate at the lower left. A fine impression of the only state, on contemporary laid paper, trimmed on the platemark or with narrow margins, generally in very good conditions. Brother of Giovanni Benedetto, whose artistic carrier and interests he took care of, Salvatore Castiglione made his only graphic work, at the age of twenty - five. Today the plate is conserved at the Calcografia Nazionale of Rome, while the preparatory drawing belongs to a private collection. Provenance: John Tetlow (Lugt 2868) Bartsch 1. 212 112

Giovanni Benedetto CASTIGLIONE detto "Il Grechetto" (Genova 1616 - Mantova 1670)
1645. Acquaforte, circa 1645 - 50, firmata in lastra in alto a sinistra. Magnifico esemplare. Etching, 1645 - 50 circa, signed on upper left plate. Magnificent work, rich in shades, printed on contemporary laid paper without watermark, trimmer to platemark or with thin margins, in excellent condition. From the series I piccoli ritratti, inspired to the parallel engravings of Rembrandt and Lievens. Rembrandt's works were no doubt a great source of inspiration for this subject. The Genoese artist knew for sure the production of his Dutch colleague and, very likely, he also bought some of them. Castiglione's graphic works present a close relationship with Rembrandt's, both in style and subjects. Both used to engrave their plates with free strokes and both sought to achieve strong chiaroscuro contrasts in their prints. Magnificent example. TIB 032, Bellini 23. 80 108

QUEVEDO Francisco de
De l'imprimerie d'Arnoud Cotinet, 1645. - De l'imprimerie d'Arnoud Cotinet, à Paris 1645, Pet. in 8 (10x16cm), 358pp. Vitello pieno periodo freddo (forse XVIII). Smooth indietro decorato. MANASSEH [BEN JOSEPH] BEN ISRAEL.
Estampado em casa de Eliahu Aboab.Estampado em casa de Eliahu Aboab. FIRST EDITION. FIRST EDITIONS of all five parts of this comprehensive code of Jewish law for the Marrano community at Amsterdam. Intended as a "how to" guide for refugees from Portugal of Jewish ancestry who had fled the Inquisition and desired to return to the faith of their forefathers, it deals with food, wine, beer, marriage, inheritance, the Sabbath, festivals and holy days such as Passover, Hanukkah, Purim, Yom Kippur, Rosh Hashanah, and much more. Part two is subtitled: @Em que se comprende a forma da observançia de todos os preceitos morays da divina Ley . . . In a witty preface, Manasseh dedicates the @Thesouro to seven leaders of the Amsterdam community, drawing parallels between their virtues and the architectural title-page border. The five parts were collected in one volume and reprinted at Amsterdam, 1710. Manasseh ben Israel (Lisbon 1604 or Madeira 1605-Middelburg, 1657) was a renowned preacher to the Amsterdam Jewish community and was considered one of its foremost intellectuals. His New Christian parents fled Portugal soon after his father's forced appearance as a penitent in a Lisbon auto-da-fé. By 1610, they had settled in Amsterdam. A precocious student, Manasseh ben Israel wrote his first work at the age of 17 and … [Click Below for Full Description]

The magnificent folio volume is illustrated with 117 anatomical copperplates including the 77 plates from Casserio's legacy, originally prepared to illustrate Casserio's 'Theatrum anatomicum', a great anatomical atlas that was still unfinished and unpublished at his death. Perez de Ribas, Andres.
Por Alo[n]so de Paredes, 1645. A great rarity of the Spanish Southwest, and still the dominant history of the region and of Jesuit activities there for the period from 1590 to 1644, the Historia provides an unparalleled description of the upper part of Mexico and what is now the southwest region of the United States in the first half of the 17th century. Andres Perez de Ribas (1576-1655) joined the Jesuit order in 1602 and arrived in Mexico in 1604 to proselytize among the native Indians. He was assigned to the area of northern Sinaloa, along the Pacific coast, and showed great ability from the start. Within a year he had baptized all the members of the Ahome nation and a large part of the Suaqui tribe, together about 10,000 natives. In 1617 he was instrumental in the pacification and conversion of the Yaqui tribe. Perez de Ribas was recalled to Mexico City in 1620 to work in the college there, eventually becoming a provincial of the school. He returned to Rome in 1643, undertaking the present history (which he completed in 1644) and other histories still found only in manuscript. The work is divided into twelve parts, cumulatively giving a history of Jesuit activities in Mexico and the American Southwest, as well as providing a social and cultural examination of Indian customs, manners, rites, and superstitions. The first part of the book gives a history of Sinaloa and its people before the arrival of the Spanish. Parts two to eleven describe the arrival of the Spanish and the Jesuits in upper Mexico and their activities among the several tribes, including the con … [Click Below for Full Description]
