Johannes Blaeu & Willem Blaeu
Amsterdam 1645 - [Amsterdam: Johannes Blaeu, c.1645], from the ‘Atlas Novus’, Latin text on verso. A MAGNIFICENT MAP OF THE GERMAN REGION OF WESTPHALIA, BY THE MOST CELEBRATED MAPMAKER OF THE ERA, IN EXCELLENT CONDITION, WITH THE MOST RESPLENDANT ORIGINAL HAND-COLORING. Dimensions: 20 x 23.5 inches (510 x 600 mm), on a full, untrimmed sheet, as originally issued. The Duchy of Westphalia, now part of the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia (Nordrhein-Westfalen), was for most of its history part of the Archbishopric of Cologne. Centered on the city of Arnsberg, the region was swept up by the Reformation, and the religious and political affiliations of its citizenry remained unsettled until the Cardinal-Prince of Cologne decisively reasserted control in1590. During the era in which the present map was created, the region was perhaps best known for giving its name to the Treaty of Westphalia (1648), which ended the Thirty Years’ War which had engulfed Germany. This elegant map is adorned with a handsome titular cartouche in the upper right-hand corner.By the time this map was published, Johannes Blaeu was already the most famous and successful cartographer and geographical publisher in the world. Building on the legacy of his late father, Willem Blaeu (1571-1638), the maps, atlases and globes produced at his Amsterdam workshop were universally admired for the great artistic mastery of the Baroque artistic style, their unparalleled geographic progressiveness, and the magnificent quality of the engraving, hand-coloring and overall presentation. It was therefore n … [Click Below for Full Description]

AL-BATTANI, Abu Abdallah Muhammad ibn Jabir [Albategnius]. [Kitab al-Zij].
Bologna: Haeredes Victorius Benatius, 1645. First separate edition, rare, of this major Arabic work on planetary astronomy, al-Battani's Kitab al-Zij, or The Motions of the Stars, a "great work ... among the most excellent in Islamic astronomy" (DSB, under al-Battani), and the work upon which al-Battani's fame in both East and West rests. Al-Battani tested many of Ptolemy's results by fresh observations, and obtained more accurate values of the obliquity of the ecliptic and of precession. He improved the moon's mean motion in longitude, used signs and cosines, and introduced new and elegant solutions into spherical trigonometry. He measured the apparent diameters of the sun and moon and their variation, and concluded that annular solar eclipses must be possible. "The indebtedness of Copernicus to al-Battani is well known. He quotes him fairly often, especially -- as does Peurbach -- in the chapters dealing with the problems of solar motion and of precession. Much more frequent references to him are found in Tycho Brahe's writings and in G. B. Riccioli's New Almagest; in addition, Kepler and -- only in his earliest writings -- Galileo evidence their interest in al-Battani's observations" (DSB, under al-Battani). The extensive annotations to the Crawford copy of De revolutionibus also clearly show that al-Battani's observations were much studied by Erasmus Reinhold, Copernican advocate and author of the Prutenic tables (see Gingerich, Census, p. 273). In addition to Plato of Tivoli's twelfth-century Latin version of the Kitab al-Zij, this volume contains "geometrical proofs a … [Click Below for Full Description]

STCN (2 copies); cf. Knuttel 5202 & 5202b (other eds.); Landwehr 242 (other ed.) A late edition, copying the original 1645 imprint, of a provisional agreement made between the Dutch States General and the Portuguese ambassador Francisco de Zousa Continho on the jurisdiction and territory of Fort Galle, one of the most important outposts in Ceylon (Sri Lanka), one of the most important outposts both strategically and as a trading centre. The Dutch had captured it from the Portuguese in 1640 and they had been fighting in the region since that time. As the Eighty Years' War was nearing its conclusion the present treaty was written in an attempt to settle the dispute. The dispute in fact continued beyond the peace of 1648 until the Dutch managed to drive the rest of the Portuguese out of Ceylon by 1658. The treaty notes the losses and battles caused by the dispute between the two powers and the demands made by the Dutch government to secure their position in the East Indies. This includes their demand for a yearly supply of cinnamon, through which the Portuguese are to pay off their debt, and restitution by both parties for the losses they caused one another. The parties agree to honor the treaty and not trespass on each other's rights and territories. Copies were to be sent to the Viceroy in Goa and to various governors in the East Indies. With library stamps. In very good condition.

Johannes Blaeu
[Amsterdam: Johannes Blaeu, c.1645], from the ‘Atlas Novus’, Latin text on verso. Dimensions: 20 x 23.5 inches (510 x 600 mm), on a full, untrimmed sheet, as originally issued. The Archbishopric, or Electorate, of Trier (Kurfürstentum Trier) was an ancient and highly influentail member of the Holy Roman Empire. Ruled by a prince-bishop it was centered on the Moselle River, which flowed from France through the Electorate until it joined the Rhine at Coblenz. The captial, located in the southwest, was one of the most ancient of German cities, having been founded by the Romans as Augusta Treverorum. This highly elegant map is graced by a beautiful titular cartouche accompanied by the figure of the Prince-Bishop, or Elector of Trier, wearing his brilliant ermine-lined chapeau and robe.By the time this map was published, Johannes Blaeu was already the most famous and successful cartographer and geographical publisher in the world. Dimensions: 20 x 23.5 inches (510 x 600 mm), on a full, untrimmed sheet, as originally issued. This magnificent map depicts the historical counties of Flanders and Zeeland. Flanders, containing the great cites of Brugges, Lille and Ghent was one of the leading centres of culture and commerce in Europe throughout the middle ages, long famed for its textile industry. Various wars had seen the county divided between France and the Spanish Netherlands (modern Belgium), while it northern extremity was held by the Dutch Republic. To the north, lies the Dutch province of Zeeland, comprised entirely of islands, during the seventeenth-century it was home to some of the world’s greatest mariners, who played a major role in global trade through their support of the Dutch East India Company (the VOC).By the time this map was published, Johannes Blaeu was already the most famous and successful cartographer and geographical publisher in the world.
