Govaerdt Schoevaerdts, Brussel 1644 - RARE VOLUME, published in Brussels in 1644. Full title: Het Leven Ende Miraekelen [Mirakelen] Vanden H. Philippus Nerius Stichter Vande Vergaderinghe Van Het Oratorie - Ghetrocken Uyt Verscheyden Zijne Beschreuen Leuens - Door Eenen Priester Vande Selue Vergaderinghe [OR Ghetrochen uyt verscheyden sijne beschreven levens-door eenen priester vande selve vergaederinghe]. TEXT in DUTCH. No illustrations. With a few woodcut decorative initials, & a few woodcut endpieces. Very scarce work, with Worldcat showing merely ONE LIBRARY holding a copy worldwide (Bibliothèque Nationale de France), which is the LATER 1696 Ghendt edition, & notes "La vie et les miracles de St. Philippe Neri" (The life & miracles of St. Philip Neri). "Philip Romolo Neri (1515-1595), known as the Apostle of Rome, was an Italian priest noted for founding a society of secular clergy called the Congregation of the Oratory. He was born in Florence, & received his early teaching from the friars at San Marco, the famous Dominican monastery in Florence. He chose to relocate to Rome in 1533. He cared for the sick & poor which, in later life, gained him the title of 'Apostle of Rome'. He also ministered to the prostitutes of the city. In 1538 he entered into the home mission work for which he became famous. In 1548, together with his confessor, Persiano Rossa, Neri founded the Confraternity of the Most Holy Trinity of Pilgrims & Convalescents, whose primary object was to minister to the needs of the thousands of poor pilgrims who flocked to Rome. In 1551 Neri received all the minor orders, & was ordained deacon, & finally priest. He thought of going to India as a missionary, but was dissuaded by friends who saw that there was abundant work to be done in Rome. In 1556 he began the institute with which his name is more especially connected, that of the Oratory. The members of the society undertook various kinds of mission work throughout Rome, notably the preaching of sermons in different churches every evening, a completely new idea at that time. He also spent much of his time hearing confessions, & effected many conversions in this way. Neri considered a cheerful temper to be more Christian than a melancholy one, & carried this spirit into his whole life. This was the secret of Neri's popularity & of his place in the folklore of the Roman poor. Many miracles were attributed to him. When his body was autopsied it was found that two of his ribs had been broken, an event attributed to the expansion of his heart while fervently praying in the catacombs. Philip Neri was a mystic of the highest order, a man of ecstasies & visions, whose greatest happiness was to be alone with God. Yet at the call of charity he gave up the delight of prayer & sought God by helping his neighbour. His whole life is that of the contemplative in action. Neri died on 25 May 1595, after having spent the day hearing confessions & receiving visitors. Neri was beatified by Paul V in 1615, & canonized by Gregory XV in 1622. His memorial is celebrated on 26 May. His body is in the Chiesa Nuova ("New Church") in Rome. Neri is one of the influential figures of the Counter-Reformation, mainly for converting to personal holiness many of the influential people within the Church itself." Small thick volume. Text in blackletter Gothic script. Laid paper. Bound in contemporary FULL VELLUM, raised bands, yapp edges, no external lettering. Covers with age-wear, front vellum ties partially torn (rear vellum ties complete), front & rear endpapers both detached (but present), old ink notation (dated 1772) to ffep, slight handling wear, otherwise a nice clean tight solid vellum-bound copy.

¶ Caillet n°1286 - Throndike VI. p.318 - Hoover coll. 147 - Sinkankas Gemology I.780 "by far the most thorough and complete up to date...

"Beginning with vol. 3 the word 'Frauenzimmer' is omitted, presumably in order not to frighten away male readers [.] The wealth of content and the excellent appearance of the work have frequently been described. It was published periodically, though not at regular intervals, and may thus be regarded as the forerunner of a literary magazine. Subjects of all kind are discussed in the form of a free conversation in which six persons, of both sexes and different ages, take part. A great number of fine copperplates, some emblematic, others taken from contemporary life, illustrate the text, so that the work has become a treasure house for literary research. The opera 'Seelewig' is found in the fourth volume" (Faber du F.).

[Attributes: First Edition]

In quibus textum Graecum variis lectionibus, emendationibus, huilcorum supplementis: ... item rariorum plantarum iconibus illustravit Ioannes Bodaeus à Stapel ... accesserunt Iulii Caesaris Scaligeri ... Amstelodami, E. Laurentium, 1644. Folio (350 x 220mm). pp. (20), 1187, (1, blank), (87, index), (1, blank), with 1 engraved title-page and 675 woodcuts in the text. Contemporary calf, richly gilt decorated spine in 7 compartments with red gilt lettered label (old repair to spine). A fine copy of the best edition of this famous work, edited by Joannes Bodaeus Van Stapel. "It is interesting not only because of the brilliance of the editing, but, curiously enough, to the American botanist as well, for involving in the discussion certain species from Virginia, other parts of the world, and Asia. The illustrations of these plants have been largely overlooked in botanical history, because of their incidental presence in a work which might not be expected to contain anything of the sort. Some were merely borrowed from l'Ecluse or de Lobel, but others seem original in this work" (H.H. Barlett in 'Fifty-five Rare Books' quoted by Hunt). Theophrastus (the father of Botany) c. 374-c. 286 B.C., was the first to study plants in a scientific way. He gives the clearest and most accurate description of germinating seeds before Malpighi in the seventeenth century.//The 'Historia Plantarum' has a great South African interest as it incorporates four pages devoted to ten South African plants, including a Stapelia, drawn by Justus Heurnius. He was at the Cape in April 1624 on his way to Batavia as a missionary. (See Gunn & Codd. Botanical Exploration of South Africa, pages 21 and 22). Heurnius is the earliest known collector of South African plants. Some insignificant tiny worming at the lower margin, not affecting text of the first 50 leaves.//Hunt 240; Nissen BBI, Suppl. 1947nc.

HISTORIARUM LIBRI EX RECENSIONE J. F. GRONOVIUS

Lvgd. Batavorvm: Ex Officina Elzeviriana, 1644-45. First printing of this edition. Bound beautifully in the middle of the 19th century but featuring a retrospective design from two centuries earlier, these volumes are handsome and well crafted, represent a distinguished work of scholarship issued by a great printing family, and belonged to an owner with a connection to our own computer age. Livy (first century B.C.) was revered throughout the Renaissance as the premier source for Roman history, and his account of the rise of Rome from its beginnings to its triumphs in the Punic Wars was central to historical and political thought. The present version was prepared by the great scholar Johann Friedrich Gronov (1611-71), whose "editions mark an epoch in the study of Livy, of both the Senecas, and of Tacitus and Gellius." (Sandys) Both Dibdin and Moss describe it as "valuable," and Moss notes that "the fourth volume [containing the notes of Gronov] is very rarely found with the other three, and is remarkably scarce." (Dibdin records the first three volumes only.) The celebrated Elzevier family of printers began work when Louis (1540-1617) set up shop about 1581 in Leyden. Over a period of more than a century, Louis and his descendants printed in excess of 1,600 titles in Leyden, The Hague, Utrecht, and Amsterdam (mostly before 1680, but continuing into the 18th century). Our copy has an illustrious provenance: it was part of the impressive library at Lord Lovelace's Scottish hunting lodge, Ben Damph Forest, which also contained a number of volumes from the library of John Locke, the cousin of the earl's grandfather. William King, eighth Baron King of Ockham (1805-93), lord lieutenant of Surrey, and first Earl of Lovelace is best known for having a remarkable wife--the brilliant mathematician Augusta Ada Byron, sole legitimate child of Lord Byron, whose work with Charles Babbage produced what is considered the first computer program. The binding commissioned by Lord Lovelace is ornate but tasteful, and the set is very much in "country house"--or in this case, hunting lodge--condition.. 133 x 77 mm. (5 1/4 x 2 7/8"). Four volumes. Edited by Johann Friedrich Gronov. First printing of this edition. HANDSOME 19TH CENTURY DEEP PURPLE STRAIGHT-GRAIN MOROCCO, ELABORATELY GILT, upper covers decorated with a lacy gilt-roll frame enclosing the arms of the Earl of Lovelace at center, raised bands tooled in gilt, triple-ruled compartments with floral ornament or lettering, turn-ins densely gilt, all edges gilt. Front pastedown with armorial bookplate of the Earl of Lovelace; front free endpaper with inked name of Lovelace manor, Ashley Combe; verso of front free endpaper with shelf markings for Lovelace's library at Ben Damph Forest; title page with faded ink inscription of early owners P. and F. de Villers. Willems 590 (vol. I-III), 588 (vol. IV); Rahir 585, 587; Dibdin II, 167; Moss II, 194. A little rubbing to extremities, tiny wormhole to one joint, one lower board lightly chafed, small dent to one board, isolated rust spots, but A VERY FINE AND CHARMING SET with few signs of use, and internally in remarkable condition. Bound beautifully in the middle of the 19th century but featuring a retrospective design from two centuries earlier, these volumes are handsome and well crafted, represent a distinguished work of scholarship issued by a great printing family, and belonged to an owner with a connection to our own computer age. (Sandys) Both Dibdin and Moss describe it as "valuable," and Moss notes that "the fourth volume [containing the notes of Gronov] is very rarely found with the other three, and is remarkably scarce." (Dibdin records the first three volumes only.) The celebrated Elzevier family of printers began work when Louis (1540-1617) set up shop about 1581 in Leyden. The binding commissioned by Lord Lovelace is ornate but tasteful, and the set is very much in "country house"--or in this case, hunting lodge--condition.

Biathanatos (one of the earliest Western works on suicide)

John Dawson, London 1644 - First edition, first issue, with the leaves of "Authors cited in this booke." Contemporary full calf with the initial blank (generally found missing), rebacked and rubbed along the hinges, front hinge tender, title page with some staining but all in all a very good and more importantly complete copy.**** "Biathanatos was written during a lengthy period of unemployment, during which Donne suffered from low spirits. In 1608, around the time that Biathanatos was originally composed, Donne wrote to his friend Henry Goodyer, 'Every Tuesday I make account that I turn a great hourglass, and consider that a week’s life is run out since I writ. But if I ask myself what I have done in the last watch, or would do in the next, I can say nothing.' Although John Sym’s Lifes Preservative Against Self-Killing (London, 1637) was published earlier, Biathanatos was the first book written in the Western tradition on the subject of suicide."
