Guigard, 472 ; Olivier-Hermal-Roton, pl. 1709. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

ITINERARIUM; OFTE SCHIP-VAERT NAER DOOST OFTE PORTUGAELS INDIEN.... [bound with:] REYS-GHESCHRIFT VAN DE NAVIGATIEN DER PORTUGALOYSERS IN ORIENTEN.... [bound with:] BESCHRIJVINGE VANDE GANTSCHE CUSTE VAN GUINEA

Amsterdam, 1644. Folio. Old boards, skillfully rebacked in calf, retaining original leather labels. Some marginal waterstaining, some browning to text leaves, plates clean, one plate trimmed. Overall very good. Lacks the maps. A later edition of one of the great classics of early travel literature, originally issued in 1596. The first part, the ITINERARIUM..., relates Linschoten's experiences during more than a decade in the East Indies before returning to Holland to write his book. This is the best account for that era of the sailing routes to the East Indies and the Portuguese establishments in India, the Spice Islands, and southeast Asia. From the time of its publication until the end of the next century, Linschoten was an essential aid to navigators in the east Indies, and his book made him "the leading geographical figure in Renaissance Holland" (Penrose). Linschoten wrote three separate works, the first being described above. The three are always found together, although they have separate titlepages and paginations in all editions. The second section, entitled REYS- GHESCHRIFT VAN DE NAVIGATIEN DER PORTUGALOYSERS IN ORIENTEN...ALS OOK VAN DE GANTSCHE CUSTEN VAN BRASILIEN...ITEM VAN'T VASTE LAND ENN DIE VOOR EYLANDEN LAS ANTILAS GHENAEMT, VAN SPAENSCH INDIEN, provides sailing directions for the East Indies, as well as for Brazil and the West Indies. The third section, BESCHRIJVINGE VANDE GANTSCHE CUSTE VAN GUINEA...EN TEGEN OVER DE CABO DE S. AUGUSTIJN IN BRASILIEN..., describes the coast of Africa and South Atlantic navigation, as well as Brazil. All parts contain information concerning America, although most of it is concentrated in the second and third parts. Chronologically, this is the next to last edition of Linschoten, the final one appearing in 1663. This copy, while lacking the maps and several plates, is interesting due to its handsome contemporary coloring of the plates, all illustrating scenes in the East Indies.

No place [Port Royal]: No publisher/printer 8vo (15.5 cm; 6.25"). 2 parts in 1 vol. 106 pp., [7] ff., 199, [1] pp., [3] ff.. 1644 Port Royal and Jansenism are synonymous in the history of France in the 1630s and 1640s. Various members of the related Le Maistre and Arnauld families, including Antoine Le Maistre, were drawn to Port Royal for religious or spiritual reasons, Antoine's translation there from Paris having been due to his attraction to the teachings of Jean Du Vergier de Hauranne (abbé de Saint-Cyran) who had introduced Jansenism into France. Le Maistre (1608–58) gave up a promising and young legal career, for he was not yet 30. Despite his youth, he had attracted the attention of Cardinal Richelieu who did not take kindly to his defection; almost coincidental with Le MaistreÂ’s arrival in Port Royal was Jean Du Vergier de HauranneÂ’s arrest and imprisonment at the cardinalÂ’s instigation. The present work, published after Du VergierÂ’s death in 1643, defends him against attacks by Jesuit writers. This is the second edition, published the same year as the first. This edition in 8vo format, the first having been in 4to. Evidence of readership: Early underlining, a few marginal notes, and other notes on blank pages. Searches of WorldCat and COPAC locate two copies in the U.S. and three in Britain. All located copies are in 4to format. Contemporary vellum over paste boards, a significant piece of vellum missing from spine (i.e., missing for a long, long time). 19th-century bookplate, light staining here and there, some age-toning; some soot-soiling to top edge and occasionally into upper margin. Minor worming in lower and inner margins of pp. 133 to end. A decent copy with some faults, scarce, and priced accordingly.

        PRINCIPUM ET ILLUSTRIUM VIRORUM EPISTOLAE

Good. VERY RARE, ORIGINAL 1644 PRINTING OF PRINCIPUM ET ILLUSTRIUM VIRORUM EPISTOLAE. This scarce, 17th Century treatise was edited by Girolamo Donzellini and printed by the legendary Elzevir (also Elsevier) press, Amsterdam, Holland. Loveley leather binding with bookplate of 7th Earl FitzWilliam, County Tyrone. Venetian Girolamo Donzellini (c. 1527-1587) was a 16th Century physician with a reputation as one of the most erudite scholars of his time. The famous Elzevir family of Dutch booksellers, publishers, and printers were best known for their editions of the classics. This desirable text is among the rarest Elzevir first editions. Fascinating work contains a collection of important letters of Aristotle, Alexander the Great, the Kings of England and France, early Popes, and Italian humanists. This impressive compilation reflected the views and opinions of some of history's greatest thinkers, on many prominent political and philosophical issues. Notably, text is dedicated to Erik Oxenstierna, the son of the famous Swedish chancellor Axel Oxenstierna. Rare book remains in good condition. Volume attractively bound in contemporary calf (leather) with decorative spine, cover shows some wear, hinges cracking yet holding firm, old bookplate, front blank leaf torn, light foxing though generally clean internally. All in all, rare treatise remains very presentable. Volume numbers 432-pages with separate preliminaries and rear index, and measures approx 3" x 5" x 1 1/4" thick.

Paris: Chez Mathieu Guillemot, 1644. Fine. Chez Mathieu Guillemot, Paris 1644, in-folio (23x35,5cm), (22) 204pp. ; 196pp., deux parties reliées en un volume. - New edition, adorned with two titles allegorical frontispiece unsigned and wrapped in water colors, 458 icons (147 for the first half and 284 for the second) in-text intaglio engraved by Jacques de Bie from the research and Cesar Ripa figures, highlighted in color (some are slightly tinted gold) and erased, as well as head and tail-pieces themselves also enhanced. Copy admirable, rare, fully adorned in water colors. Full brown calf at the time. Back with five nerves decorated coffered and gilded finials. Shaved head cover, scuffs and two corners bumped. Ripa's work is the most famous iconographic books, complete allegorical images to artists directory. Born of Christian and medieval art, and mixed with the contribution of the rebirth of the ancient art of the old regime is essentially programmatic; galore using symbols and pictures to create a secret meaning, reading and deciphering; art had thus quickly need emblems manuals, inexhaustibly manna to execute the works. Thus, according to the work of "Emile Male and Iconological Erwin Panofsky studies, intelligence of European painting of the XVII and XVIII centuries is inseparable from the book Ripa. This man originally published in 1593 and his guide translating Baldwin of 1636 illustrated, and enjoyed multiple editions, quickly became not only a must, but a standard for all future book of emblems. Bookplate the library I. Gosselin.

- First edition of the French translation, translated by François Bachou on Gemmarum and lapidarum historia (1609) of the Flemish doctor and naturalist Anselm of Boodt; is illustrated in Figures 45 woodcut-text and performs well both folding plates constituting the "gems Division & towns." Binding slightly later in full red morocco. Back with four ornate nerves, part of title of Havana morocco. Triple net gold bezel flat and golden florets spandrels. Gold lace surrounding contreplats. All edges gilt. Head cover slightly rubbed three corners lightly used. A tiny worm gallery reaching a wafer outer margin of the first notebooks, some pages browned, fine copy. Our copy is full of his errata sheet. In The Parfaict jeweler, Anselm of Boodt reviewed no less than 106 minerals and gems by considering the point of view of science (ranking hardness, composition ...) but also superstition (healing stones). His research is based both on ancient sources (Natural History of Pliny, Materia Medica of Dioscorides, Galen simple Drugs, De mineralibus Albert the Great ...) as the work of Renaissance scholars (Cesalpino, Gesner Scaliger particular). We find in this book practical information on the size of the stones and identifying counterfeit, a sum of mineralogical knowledge accumulated at the time, but an inventory of minerals-used therapeutically as well as a justification for their use, which are useful to both jewelers, naturalists and physicians. A useful catalog of all listed stone is placed at the top of the structure. Two Treatises in the one of which, The Nature of Bodies; in the Other, The Nature of the Sovle; is Loked into: In Way of Discovery; of the Immortality of Reasonable Sovles.

Paris, Gilles Blaizot, 1644. Folio. A lovely later green full calf binding with six raised bands, gilt ornamentations and gilt leather title-label to spine. Gilt frames to boards and all edges of boards gilt. All edges gilt. Title-page a bit dusty, with old owner's name, and with a neat repair to blank margin (from verso). A very nice copy indeed. Woodcut vignettes and initials. (44), 466 pp.. The very rare first edition of Digby's seminal main work, which comprises his two treatises, "The Nature of Bodies" and "The Nature of Man's Soul". The two treatises were first printed as is seen here, together, in folio, in Paris, in 1644, they were reprinted the following year in London, in 4to, and again in 1658 and 1669. The book constitutes a landmark work of 17th century natural science, "It is the first fully developed expression of atomism or corpuscular theory, the first important defense of Harvey on the circulation in English; a modern presentation of the nervous system predating Descartes; and a ground-breaking work in embryology. It also contains the first recorded patch-test for allergy; the fullest early account in English of teaching lip-reading; and material on conditioning anticipating Pavlov." (Rubin and Huston, Digby, a Bibliography, p. 12).After having lost his wife in 1633, the English-born natural philosopher and occult scientist, Kenelm Digby (1603-1665), had settled in France, where he came into contact with Hobbes and Mersenne and came to know Descartes, whom he visited in Holland, and whom he corresponded with. Digby was an early member of the Royal Society, and he was also famous for his alchemical recipes, which he shared with the likes of Robert Boyle.According to D.S.B., The most important piece of work by Digby is the first of the two treatises published here, "The Nature of Bodies". "Here he displays clarity and logic of approach that show his appreciation of Descartes... He discusses motion extensively but qualitatively, although with many admiring references to Galileo's "Two New Sciences" (1638), which not many had read in 1644; he includes Galileo's statement of the law of falling bodies but criticizes Galileo for taking too narrow and strictly functional a view (as Descartes also criticized him)." (D.S.B., IV:96). However, the two treatises are closely linked, and the main purpose of the second, "The Nature of Man's Soul" is to show the immortality of the rational soul, a main concern of philosophers and natural scientists since ancient Greece. The tretise on the body is based on atomistic ideas of Descartes and Gassendi, and Digby sets out to reconstruct the physical world atomistically, thus creating the first fully developed atomistic system of the 17th century, which through Newton and Boyle became the foundation of modern chemistry and physics. Besides his huge influence within these fields, Digby here also, with his theories on the operations of body and soul, i.e. man's senses and mind, provides groundbreaking analysis within the fields of MEDICINE (his defense of Harvey's theory of blood circulation, also being acquainted with Descarte's objections; his own experimental observations, with which he proved that the heart beats by itself; his statement of reflex action, which was based on his observations of motor loss and sensory retention, which made him one of the early supporters of the modern conception of the nervous system), BIOLOGY (with his question of epigenesis as opposed to preformation, which he is practically the first to do since Albertus Magnus, whom he also translated; before Harvey and Malpighi, he expresses a surprisingly modern conception of embryonic development making him the main embryologist of the time and a reformer within this field; he is also the main authority on theories of heredity of his time), PSYCHIATRY (with his experiments and quite accurate ideas of conditioned reflexes he anticipates the theories of Pavlov; he conducts the first recorded patch-test, distinguishing psychological aversion from physical allergy). In this work, Digby also presents for the very first time in English the new lip-reading technique for the deaf and dumb developed by the Spanish priest Bonet, and thus the first English book on the subject (1648) quotes Digby's work. "Digby's earliest scientific work and his most important..." (Honeyman, II:877). Wellcome II:468 only has the London editions from 1645, 1658 and 1669. "This was issued, containing the author's system of philosophy, after he had had a number of conversations with Descartes... Chapter 26 deals with the circulation of the blood... Dr. Fulton (Sir Kenelm Digby, 1937) has pointed out the great importance of Digby's experiments on the heart - described in this work - by which he destroyed Descartes' objections to Harvey's conclusion on the circulation of the blood." (Duveen, 172). Partington 2: 424

Amsterdam, Heinric Laurentius, 1644. Folio. Contemporary full vellum with neat later (19th century) rebacking. Six raised bands and gilt title to spine. Some wear to extremities. Internally a fresh and clean copy with only a bit of occasional brownspotting. Endpapers with a bit of soiling. 2 bookplates to inside of front board: Gilbert Redgrave, London (dated 1894) & Gorden M. Jones, Virginia. Text in Greek and Latin. Woodcut title-page, numerous woodcut intials throughout, and more than 600 woodcut illustrations in the text. (20), 1187, (1), (88 - Index) pp.. First edition thus, being the most important and influential edition of Theophrastus' seminal work "Enquiry into Plants" - the first systematization of the botanical world and the most important contribution to botanical science up until the Renaissance. Bodaeus von Stapel's groundbreaking edition constitutes the first illustrated edition of Theophrastus' masterpiece as well as the first with both Greek and Latin text. Furthermore, von Stapel has not only collected all relevant commentaries and knowledge, he has also added corrections and much foundational information, turning the work into one of the most influential botanical works of the 17th century, profoundly influencing the likes of Linnaeus and contributing significantly to the development of modern scientific botany. "This edition displays great care and research; the notes are numerous and learned, and all botanical information to be gleaned from Aristotle, Pliny, Dioscorides, and other ancient writers, seems to be embodied in this work. The Greek text is Heinsius's; the Latin version is that of the editor, who has placed Gaza's in the margin, with frequent corrections. The conjectures of Scaliger, Constantine, and Salmasius, are also incorporated... it has collected into one body the opinions of the old writers on the subject of the PLANTS. It contains some wood-cuts of the rarer species, which are much better uncoloured than coloured." Dibdin II:498). The numerous woodcut plant illustrations were partly copied from other sources and partly made especially for this edition. Thus, apart from being "one of the best and most thoughtfully prepared of all the editions of Theophrastos" (Hunt), our editor has also made original contributions that are of great importance. "It is interesting not only because of the brilliance of the editing, but, curiously enough, to the American botanist as well, for involving in the discussion certain species from Virginia, other parts of the New World, and Asia. The illustrations of these plants have been largely overlooked in botanical history, because of their incidental presence in a work which might not be expected to contain anything of the sort. Some were merely borrowed from l'Ecluse or de Lobel, but others seem original in this work" (H.H. Bartlett: Fifty-five Rare Books - quoted by Hunt). At the height of the Renaissance, with the expansion of the known world and the spreading of the book due to the invention of the printing press, many new publications on plants appeared. Most of these publications, however, were primarily concerned with the medicinal qualities of individual plants and only few authors or editors took an interest in the general nature of the plants and how they could systematically be classified. One of the few exceptions was Bodaeus von Stapel. With his seminal 1644 edition of "Historia Plantarum", he focused on the overarching classification system of plants and took Theophrastus' work a step further, adding essential commentaries and illustrations - illustrations that were to be copied for centuries after. These illustrations remain the standard illustrations of Theophrastus' foundational work. This edition of Theophrastus' "Historia Plantarum" became the standard edition of that earliest work on systematic botany and the edition that all serious scientific botanists of the 17th and 18th centuries will have studied. "Linnaeus, in the practice of his favourite art of systematizing, classified not only plants but the writers about them. The writers he distinguishes primarily as Botanists, and Plant Lovers, recognizing as Botanists only such as treat of plants from some philosophic or scientific point of view. Choosing his illustrations from annals of remote antiquity, he names among the earliest of the Greeks who wrote of plants Hippocrates; but because he wrote of plants only in the interests of medicine Linnaeus styles him Father of Medicine... Similarly Aristotle... is down in the Linnaean list of ancient celebrities as Prince of Philosophers. To Theophrastus, however, he accords the title Father of Botany. From this opinion, far from having been newly promulgated in Linnaeus's time, there has been no dissenting voice. On the contrary, Albert Haller, one of the most learned men in Europe in his day, and a botanist of such renown that Linnaeus held him in reverence, and also in some fear, denominates Theophrastus "the first of real botanists in point of time." Kurt Sprengel in the nineteenth century, having rehearsed the names of a long line of ancient authors who had written more or less concerning plants, says: "But the most illustrious of them all, and the true father of botany, was Theophrastus Eresius...." (Greene, Landmarks of Botanical History, I:128).It is no wonder that Linnaeus should find in Theophrastus the Father of his own field - The "Historia Plantarum" was not only the earliest work on systematic botany, it also contained Theophrastus' description of the formation of the plant seed, the earliest account known and the best that was made for 2000 years.Hunt: 240; Pritzel: 9197; BM: V:2091; Dibdin: II:498
