1643. Rare Map: 'L'Asie. Par N. Sanson d'Abeville Geographe ordinaire du Roy.' (Asia) This fine map of Asia depicts an attractive and intriguing view of the continent and the East Indies. This map shows a large, dramatic version of Terre de Jesso, drawn from the discoveries of the Maarten de Vries expedition of 1643. Here Sanson incorporated De Vries information by combining Hokkaido and the southern Kurils into a huge island, shown with the two place names of le Tessoy P and Matzumay. Korea is depicted as an island. This version of the map extends another 10 degrees west to include part of New Guinea, identified here as the Terra de Papous. Engraving on a verge type hand laid paper, with watermark. Description: This scarse map originates from: 'Curieuse aenmerckingen der bysonderste Oost en West-Indische verwonderens-waerdige dingen; nevens die van China, Africa, en andere gewesten des werelds.', by S. de Vries, published in Utrecht by J. Ribbius, 1682. This splendid work on the curiosities encountered during the ages of exploration abroad contains 13 maps by Sanson d'Abbeville and many etched plates by Romeyn de Hooghe, which are considered some of the most interesting of his oeuvre. Ref: Sabin, 19854; Tiele, 260; Cat. NHSM, 240; Muller, 1565.Artists and Engravers: Author: Simon de Vries (Dutch 1524-1708): Poet, writer and translator, publisher, active in Utrecht. KIRCHER Athanasius
1643. Auteur : KIRCHER Athanasius -- Titre : Athanasii Kircheri,... Magnes, sive de Arte magnetica... Editio secunda... [cui annexa est epistola P. Martini Martini. J. BOISSEAU Jean (fl. 1631-1657).
Paris: chez Jean Boisseau, 1643. Single sheet (20 1/2 x 13 1/2) inches. Fine engraved map of the Great Lakes, the title within a mannerist strapwork cartouche lower left. THE FIRST MAP TO DELINEATE AND NAME THE FIVE GREAT LAKES This rare and important map was the first printed map to illustrate and name all five Great Lakes. Boisseau improved upon the Champlain by incorporating the names that were only keyed before. Unlike Champlain's map, Boisseau's work delineates and identifies all five of the Great Lakes, even though the lakes' configurations and sizes remain incorrect. Indeed, in Champlain's earlier work, both Lake Erie and Michigan were left unnamed. In Sanson's 1650 map, Lake Michigan is represented by "Lac des Puans," and named to the northeast of "Grand Lac" (Lake Superior). Also of significance, Boisseau's 1643 map refers to present-day Ottawa River as "R des Algonmequins," a body of water which Boisseau indicates traveled upriver from "I de Montreal" to "Lac des Biserenis" (Lake Nipissing). After the death of Francis I in 1547, France descended into a period of religious upheaval and weak government with Paris controlled by a revolutionary council until the Edict of Nantes in 1598. The Court sat in exile in Tours and the countrys lack of stability resulted in little advancement in French cartography during the second half of the sixteenth century. However, with the new century came the absolutist rule of Louis XIII and Louis XIV and the patronage of the Court, once again, began to thrive. The progress made by German, English and of course Dutch cartographers was … [Click Below for Full Description]

HOMER
Paris Sumptibus Sebastiani Cramoisy. John Evelyn’s Copy of the First Comprehensive Lexicon to Homer [HOMER]. COULON, Louis. Lexicon Homericum, seu Accurata vocabulorum omnium quæ in Homero continentur, explanatio.Paris: Sumptibus Sebastiani Cramoisy, 1643. First edition of the first comprehensive lexicon to Homer. Small octavo. [6], 448 [i.e. 440] pp. Greek and roman types. Woodcut printer’s device on title. Contemporary French limp vellum painted black. Spine ruled and lettered in gilt. Mottled edges. Marginal paper flaw to leaf T1 (pp. 299/300), not affecting text. Minor worming to lower blank margin. Overall, an excellent copy. Housed in a cloth clamshell case. From the library of John Evelyn, with the Evelyn library booklabel on front pastedown, his press-marks, his ink ownership inscription and motto: ("E Libris Evelynis emptus Parisiis, 1650. Meliora retinete") on front free endpaper. Evelyn possessed a number of books bound in black vellum which he bought on his sojourns in Paris, 1643-1652. Black vellum was a particular French taste of the period, and unlike English seventeenth-century "sombre" bindings, occurs on a wide variety of books, from novels to scholarly texts. Coulon (1605-1664) had entered the Jesuit order in 1620, which he left twenty years later. As a Jesuit he had published (in 1632) an edition of four books of Homer’s Iliad for young students (De Backer-Sommervogel II, col. 1562). After leaving the Jesuits he published, besides this Homeric lexicon, several travel and historical books (Cioranescu 22245-22259). The Lexicon Homericum was considerably mo … [Click Below for Full Description]

CAVALIERI, Bonaventura.
Bologna: Victor Benatis, 1643. First edition. First edition. "Cavalieri, a pupil of Galileo, introduced logarithms into Italy in his Trigonometria and several other works." (Hook & Norman: Origins of Cyberspace, No. 3). "From the standpoint of mathematics alone the Italian writer who influenced the science most in the 17th century was probably Bonaventura Cavalieri, ... [he] was one of the first to recognize the great value of logarithms" (Smith: History of Mathematics, p.362). "Logarithms were introduced into mathematics in the work of Napier in 1614. In Italy such valuable auxiliaries to numerical calculation were introduced by Cavalieri, together with noteworthy developments in trigonometry and applications to astronomy. In this connection we might mention 'Directorium generale uranometricum' (1632), ..., 'Nuova pratica astrologica' (1639), and 'Trigonometria plana, et sphaerica, linearis et logarithmica' (1643). The 'Directorium', the 'Pratica', and the 'Trigonometria' contain, moreover, excellent logarithmictrig-onometric tables." (DSB III, p.152). The final 104 pages of the Trigonometria contain Cavalieri's tables; "the main table in this work the logarithms of numbers up to 1000 are exhibited to seven decimals with characteristic and interscript first differences." (Henderson: Bibliotheca Tabularum Mathematicarum, no. 37). SICARDO, José (Joseph).
Alden & Landis 698/203 (6 copies); Cordier, Japonica col. 407; Palau 312228; Sabin 80832; WorldCat (8 copies). Rare first and only edition of an important, comprehensive and influential history of the almost always disastrous Christian missions to Japan, by José Sicardo (1643-1715), mostly an account of the European and native Japanese Christian martyrs of the late 16th and early 17th centuries, stopping around 1638. It is divided into three books, the first giving a general account of Japan and of the Augustinian mission there, with detailed information about the exchange of embassies between Japan and the Philippines. Books two and three cover the martyrs in chronological order, with a list in the last chapter of book 3. The work closes with an extensive table of contents and an index. Sicardo was a Spanish Augustinian who was appointed professor of theology at the University of Mexico in 1688. Since the Japanese excluded most of Europe from their trade and other contacts at this time, Sicardo's account gave most Europeans their primary view of the country. With minor foxing on the title-page and last few leaves, and an occasional minor marginal defect, but still in very good condition and with generous margins. With the spine somewhat browned, some sewing supports broken, the ties on th back board lost and a few scrapes and scratches, but the binding is still good. A rare major contribution to the history of Christian … [Click Below for Full Description]
