No publisher/printer, 1643. The anonymous author has keen and informed observations on the contributions by both sides to bringing about the Civil War. We find it well written and unexpectedly impartial. ESTC alerts us that the selections mentioned in the title of this pamphlet are from Thomas Bilson's The true difference betweene Christian subjection and unchristian rebellion. There is edition (Wing D1628A, ESTC R215130) of the same year that omits the selections from Bilson.

Giovanni MONTECALERIO (da Montecalerio) (1578 - 1654)
"Carta storico-geografica tratta dall'atlante ""Chorographica descriptio provinciarum et conventuum F. F. Minorum S. Francisci Capucinorum..."". Taken from the "Chorographica Descriptio Provinciaru & Conventum F. F. Minorum S. Francisci Capucinorum...". The atlas of the Capuchin provinces was initiated in manuscript form by the minister general of the order, Father Silvestro from Panicale in 1632 and was to serve as an aid for geographic General visits. At his death, the successor Father Giovanni from Montecaliero, which is often mistakenly attributed the authorship of maps, commissioned by his father Massimino Guechen to continue the work. The engravers of the plates were executed by Massimino … [Click Below for Full Description]

BOISSEAU (Jean).
Paris, Jean Boisseau, 1643. 347 x 545 mm. Long Island est nommée "I. de l'Ascension". [Click Below for Full Description]

n/a, Ferrara?, 1643. 4to (185 x 140 mm), c. 155 leaves in brown and red ink, including 15 leaves of tables, with a decorative armorial device on title-page, and numerous diagrams in the text, some with ink wash; the title soiled, damp-stained, and strengthened with a paper strip on verso at inner margin; the final, blank leaves, partly damp-stained and soiled; otherwise overall very well preserved; rebound in the 20th-century in vellum-backed boards. A HIGHLY INTERESTING AND FINELY ILLUSTRATED ASTRONOMICAL TREATISE IN DIALOGUE FORM IN THE IMMEDIATE POST-GALILEAN PERIOD, DISCUSSING AND ABSORBING THE NEW ASTRONOMY. STILL LARGELY UNSTUDIED, THIS IS THE EARLIER OF TWO RECORDED VERSIONS OF THIS TEXT, THE OTHER ORIGINALLY STEMMING FROM THE COLLECTION OF THE NOTED HISTORIAN OF SCIENCE AND GALILEO EXPERT, STILLMAN DRAKE, AND NOW HELD AT THE FISHER LIBRARY, TORONTO. Possibly compiled for private instruction, and highly likely inspired by Galileo’s Dialogo, this extensive manual employs two interlocutors, a Pellegrino Cantelli, and Girolamo Calcagni, whose arms are found on the title-page. Leading through from the elemental to complex astronomy, the treatise - apparently compiled the year after Galileo’s death in 1642 - frequently cites, then questions and challenges the teachings of the ancients, whilst cautiously presented and phrased. The third dialogue of the first part carefully treats the motion of the earth, first discussing the question of a revolutionary motion, then the possibility of rotation. A number of dialogues discuss geographical questions and details, and a table pr … [Click Below for Full Description]

CAVALIERI, Bonaventura.
Bologna: Victor Benatis, 1643. First edition. "Cavalieri, a pupil of Galileo, introduced logarithms into Italy in his Trigonometria and several other works." (Hook & Norman: Origins of Cyberspace, No. 3). "From the standpoint of mathematics alone the Italian writer who influenced the science most in the 17th century was probably Bonaventura Cavalieri, ... [he] was one of the first to recognize the great value of logarithms" (Smith: History of Mathematics, p.362). "Logarithms were introduced into mathematics in the work of Napier in 1614. In Italy such valuable auxiliaries to numerical calculation were introduced by Cavalieri, together with noteworthy developments in trigonometry and applications to astronomy. In this connection we might mention 'Directorium generale uranometricum' (1632), ..., 'Nuova pratica astrologica' (1639), and 'Trigonometria plana, et sphaerica, linearis et logarithmica' (1643). The 'Directorium', the 'Pratica', and the 'Trigonometria' contain, moreover, excellent logarithmictrig-onometric tables." (DSB III, p.152). The final 104 pages of the Trigonometria contain Cavalieri's tables; "the main table in this work the logarithms of numbers up to 1000 are exhibited to seven decimals with characteristic and interscript first differences." (Henderson: Bibliotheca Tabularum Mathematicarum, no. 37). The Trigonometria also contains a preliminary defense by Cavalieri of his method of indivisibles; "Throughout the last three of the four volumes of his 'Centrobaryca' (1635-1641) [Paul] Guldin had commented upon Cavalieri's use of indivisibles and had particularl … [Click Below for Full Description]

PLATINA BATTISTA.
Barezzi., Venezia, 1643. 2 voll., in 8°, m. pelle, cc.nn. 12 + da pag. 9 (probabile errore di numerazione in quanto registro esatto) a pag. 74 (Nomi, cognomi e patrie.)+ 1 cc.nn. CAVALIERI Bonaventura
Bologna, Benazzi, 1643. In-4° (23 x 16), pp. 71+(104) di tavole logaritmiche. Bella antiporta allegorica incisa in rame; e una tav. in rame f.t. con figure geometriche. Leg. piena pergamena epoca. His 'Bibliotheca Belgica' is a monumental bio-bibliography of Dutch and Belgian authors in the arts, sciences and letters and their works in Latin, French and Flemish (these last often listed with Latinised titles). Prefaced by a topographical delineation of Belgium and an index of names absent in the first edition, it is a fundamental source for the bibliographic history of the early modern Low Countries, and the basis for Jean-François Foppens's 'Bibliotheca Belg … [Click Below for Full Description]

Dijon Palliot, 1643. (34,5 x 22 cm). (22) 322 S.; SS. 323-725, 9 Bll. - "Morisot (1592-1661) was one of the great intellects of his time, and his works were greatly accepted. 'Orbis Maritimi' is his best work, and it has, among others, the merit of being the first Naval history to have been written. It is divided into two parts. The first part is devoted to early periods. The second part treats of 'modern' times, and the deeds of the British, French, Dutch, Spanish and Portuguese. South America and Brazil are described from page 601 on. The work is sumptuously printed, and contains countless maps and plates in the text. There is one large folding plate representing a regatta of ancient times. The plates showing divers types of embarkations are very picturesque. The map of Brazil is very curious" (BdM). Enthalten sind weiterhin Küstenkarten von Nordamerika, Feuerland, Ostasien, Afrika (4), Kleinasien mit Cypern, Nordafrika, Mittelmeer, Sizilien, Italien sowie eine Karte der alten Welt nach Pomponius Mela etc. "Pages 592 to 612 contain a description of America, with three maps" (Sabin). - Exlibris.
