VISCONTI ZACCARIA, (BAUCIO CARLO).
Venezia, apud Turrinum, 1643. "In Modus interrogandi daemonem ab exorcista (Venice, Turrinus, 1643), Carolus De Baucio, a priest in the city of Capua, summarizes the canonical views on how to question devils during an exorcism. In a few instances, however, Baucio introduces some interesting and less frequent variants. For instance, he believes that the exorcist may ask the devil which priest will succeed in expelling him from the obsessed person's body... De Baucio also underscores that the exorcist's questions must be succinct and unequivocal" (Maggi). A. Maggi, Satan's Rhetoric: A Study of Renaissance Demonology, Chicago 2001, p. 124.

STRÁNSKÝ, Pavel
1643. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. A very rare and mysterious history of the Czech (Bohemian) Republic by Pavel Stransky. Written in Latin, this second edition includes an engraved title page that was not included in the original 1634 Elzevir edition. The book was written in a spirit of evoking tolerance toward the Czech Republic - a republic itself that was tolerant of all things foreign. But it wasn't translated into languages other than Latin until the 18th-century. [Attributes: First Edition]

27. Juni 1581 in Rudolstadt; gest. 4. Smith, Thomas
London. 1643 edition. Octavo, early or original full brown calf, double blind-ruled along borders of boards, pp. (8), 71 (3), 75-120, illustrated throughout with in-text woodcuts; has 2 1/2 of the three folding tables or plates called for: folding woodcut plate at p. 33 is present and complete, if a little tired and mildly stained; folding table at p. 57 is only half there, and woodcut plate at p. 110 is complete but has a couple short tears and one longish tear that should be professionally mended. A good copy; moderate rubbing to binding, no pastedowns, so leather turn-ins and original boards are exposed, early signatures from 1742 and 1743 of 'Thomas Reynolds his book' to preliminary blank pages and facing the second title page. Page 102 has 3 inch clean and reparable tear, some spotting and light dampstains to a few other pages but the text is largely very good and clean. Interesting for the second half of the book to be mainly devoted to FIREWORKS with excellent woodcut illustrations. Good.

England & Wales. Parliament. House of Commons.
London: Printed for Edw. Husbands, 1643. 4to (19 cm, 7.5"). 63 pp. The Irish rebellion of 1641 is nicely explained on the Trinity College Dublin library website (http://1641.tcd.ie/historical-rebellion.php). Thousands of English and Scottish settlers were dispossessed during the uprising; many of those who fled to Dublin for safety were interviewed by crown authorities and their depositions taken. This publication contains abstracts of some of those eyewitness testimonies, as well as the House's reasoning on the cause of the rebellion and a short narrative of its early months, the latter with considerable emphasis on naval operations. ESTC R4373; Wing (rev. ed.) E2557. Quarter red morocco with French-swirl marbled paper sides and gilt spine lettering; binding signed (with small rubber-stamp on verso of front free endpaper) by the Macdonald Company of New York.

DESARGUES, Gerard
1643 1st ed MATHEMATICS Sundials Clocks Perspective Horology Geometry Desargues Girard Desargues was an early 17th-century French mathematician known for his foundational studies on geometry. In 1640, he wrote a treatise on the proper way of placing and identifying the radius of gnomonic sundials. This work features 69 impressive illustrations by Abraham Bosse, who illustrates shadows, clocks, and sundials. Curiously though, the DNB notes that no known copies of the 1640 exist thus calling the 1643 the actual first edition. (*note it is unknown whether there was an actual print run for the 1640, which is why this is considered the first edition.) The Science of Art, pp. 120-123 Desargues (1591-1661) , was the "greatest perspectivist and projective geometer of his generation. Desargues was a civil and military engineer, an architect specialising in staircase design and above all a geometer of extraordinary spatial vision. His intellectual ambition was expressed in two closely-related aspirations: the building of a geometry of position (i.e. non-metrical) based on projective techniques; and the provision of all-embracing methods of geometrical operation for practitioners in various fields . In 1643, Bosse brought out the first of the publications in which he expounded Desargue's views. These consisted of treatises devoted to -- manières universelles -- for the cutting of stones in architectures according to the principles of projective geometry and the making of sundials, etc. These attracted new assaults, this time from an expert in stonecutting, Curabelle, who devoted three pamphlets to the criticism of Desargues's works"].
[Click Below for Full Description]

A comprehensive and beautifully illustrated description of Swabia (German Schwaben, Latin Suevia), from Merian and Zeiller's "Topographiae Germaniae" series (16 volumes 1641-1654). With its capital at Augsburg, Swebia was "a medieval duchy in the lands now forming southwestern Germany. Its territories covered the area now occupied by Baden-Württemberg (including the Black Forest) and parts of western Bavaria (to the Lech River) and northern Switzerland. It owes its importance to its strategic position between the upper reaches of two of Europe's most important rivers, the Danube and the Rhine. In 1376, 14 cities, for their own protection, organized themselves into the Swabian League of Cities. The League grew to eventually include over 32 cities from Basle in the west to Regensburg in the east, from Constance in the south to Nürnberg (Nuremberg) in the North.
Good.
