Smith, Thomas
London. 1643 edition. Octavo, early or original full brown calf, double blind-ruled along borders of boards, pp. (8), 71 (3), 75-120, illustrated throughout with in-text woodcuts; has 2 1/2 of the three folding tables or plates called for: folding woodcut plate at p. 33 is present and complete, if a little tired and mildly stained; folding table at p. 57 is only half there, and woodcut plate at p. 110 is complete but has a couple short tears and one longish tear that should be professionally mended. A good copy; moderate rubbing to binding, no pastedowns, so leather turn-ins and original boards are exposed, early signatures from 1742 and 1743 of 'Thomas Reynolds his book' to preliminary blank pages and facing the second title page. Page 102 has 3 inch clean and reparable tear, some spotting and light dampstains to a few other pages but the text is largely very good and clean. Interesting for the second half of the book to be mainly devoted to FIREWORKS with excellent woodcut illustrations. Good.

[Click Below for Full Description]

(Prynne, William) Sparke, Michael
London: Michael Sparke, 1643. First edition. 4 pp. on bifolium. 1 vols. Folio (9 x 6-3/4 in.). A rare catalogue by the printer Michael Sparke of the works of William Prynne (1600-1669), the puritan pamphleteer. "Prynne was one of the most prolific and zealous of the Puritan pamphleteers of the seventeenth century, best known for his willingness to suffer torture and imprisonment for the right to express himself in print. For his criticism of the English stage in Histrio-Mastix (published by Sparke, 1633), a work interpreted as casting aspersions on the king and queen, Prynne was imprisoned, [pilloried] and shorn of his ears" - Ralph E. McCoy, Freedom of the Press: An Annotated Bibliography K-124. Sparke states in his "The Stationer to the Reader" that he has published this catalogue "To free the Author from those Spurious Impostures which have been injuriously fathered on him by Walker the Ironmonger" and "To prevent all Imperfect Catalogues ... and to discover what Copies of his have been published by Erroneous Manuscripts ... " He lists 31 titles: 8 before his imprisonment, 14 written while in the Tower and 9 written since his release and return from exile. Among the best-known books published by Sparke are John Smith's The Generall Historie of Virginia, New England and the Summer Isles (first published 1624) and Francis Higginson's New-Englands Plantation (1630). Internally little browned and with very minor spotting, a few annotations and markings in old hand, two wormholes affecting a few letters to the end. Contemporary plain vellum (remboitage binding, old title in manuscript to spine partially erased). A handsome copy. ---- Heirs of Hippocrates 449; Waller 8890; Garrison-Morton 2273 (first edition); NLM/Krivatsy 11055; Norman 1932 (first edition). - The second, enlarged edition (the first contained only 12 engravings) and almost as rare as the original edition printed in Naples 11 years earlier. "The first textbook of surgical pathology. It treats of all kinds of swelling under the 'abscess' and describes neoplasms of the genital organs and sarcomata of bones. Tumours of the breast are classified into four groups, the section devoted to them being one of the most important in the book. This was also the first book to include illustrations of lesions with the text" (Garrison-Morton). Severino's tumor pathology was perhaps the best: He described tumors of the male and female genital organs and gave accounts of massive neoplasms of the bones. He classified breast tumors under four headings and his section on 'mammarum strumae' contains one of the best early discussions of malignancy and benignancy in breast tumors." (Norman). Thomas Smith
London: 1643. Condition: Good.
