TWIST, Johan van.
Third edition of this description of Northwest India and of the cotton, silk and indigo trade by Johan van Twist (d. 1643), Dutch merchant and envoy of the Dutch East India Company (VOC), and director of the VOC in Ahmadabad, the capital of the modern state of Gujarat. Between 1617 and 1744 the city was one of the VOC trading posts (factories) in India, falling under Suratte on the river Tapti. On pp. 74-94 follows a description of the coasts, shallows and roads useful for sailing the East Indies, including descriptions of the sailing routes from Bantam to Amboina, from Amboina to Ternate and Celebes, from Bantam through the Strait of Balemban and Zabon to Malacca till Achin, from Achin to Ceylon and Puncto Gallo, and from Batavia to Japan (Firando). Van Twist is known through a painting by Jan Baptist Weenix and this posthumously published description of Gujarat. He became chief of the trading post Gujarat in 1635, Cabaya and Bortchia, and governor of Dutch Malacca (1641-42).With the upper part of the leaves slightly waterstained, some leaves cut a bit short and two leaves with false fold slightly affecting the text. CHARDIN, Jean.
First complete edition of the famous voyages of Jean Chardin in Persia, around the Gulf, and other Eastern countries. Jean Chardin (1643-1713) was the son of a wealthy Parisian jeweller. Since he was bent on travelling to the East, he proposed to his father to go and set up a diamond-trade with the East. On his first trip in 1665 he travelled through Persia and to Isfahan, the Persian capital. There he gained access to the court of Shah Abbas II, to whom he became the personal merchant jeweller. After extensive travelling through Persia, studying the religion and culture, he returned to Paris in 1670. Later in 1671 Chardin left again for the East and, meeting with many difficulties and dangers, took two years to reach Persia by way of Constantinople and Southern Russia. From Persia he proceeded to India and returned to France by way of the Cape of Good Hope in 1677. Among the numerous fine engravings are folding views of Tiflis, Erivan, Isfahan, Persepolis, etc., and some beautiful plates of architecture and costumes. Chardin is one of the most detailed observers of the Gulfs pearl fishing in this period. Each volume with an armorial bookplate on pastedown. Binding rubbed along the extremities, some volumes are slightly cracked at the hinge. Leaves slightly browned, some occasional minor spots and a few owner's notes in pencil. Overall a very good copy.Atabey 219; Howgego, to 1800, C102; STCN (4 copies).

GOLDMANN, Nicolaus.
First French edition (with the engraved title-page new for this edition) of an instruction manual for designing fortifications, with an emphasis on drawing their plans, profiles, perspective views, etc., first published in Latin (also by the Elzeviers) in 1643 using the same illustration plates. Most of the illustrations show fortification plans, profiles, elevations, etc., including many details, but they also include plain and solid geometrical diagrams, drafting instruments, bridges and military buildings. Many of the plans include a scale. The book, dedicated to the Dutch Stadtholder and Prince of Orange Frederick Hendrick, shows the Leiden Elzeviers at their high point, with stunning woodcut decorations and initials, and good presswork. Nicolaus Goldman (1611-1665) was born in Breslau but studied in Leiden and settled there permanently, teaching military engineering. With the late 19th-century bookplate of Château de Rosny-sur-Seine, near Paris. Part of the Rosny library was sold in 1837, but the present book was not. With small worm holes in 5 leaves, some occasional minor foxing or a minor marginal tear or stain, but otherwise in very good condition. The binding has been rebacked and patched, probably at an early date. An instruction manual for drawing fortification plans and perspective views, and a nice example of the Elzeviers' book production.Berlin Kat. 3527; Jordan 1469 (6 copies); Sloos, Warfare 8026; STCN (6 copies)..

ASAI (or AZAI), Shuhaku (or Masazumi or Sakuan)
1643. Two manuscript volvelles, each with a rotating paper disc & diagrams in the text. 51 folding leaves. 8vo (230 x 165 mm), orig. aubergine wrappers, new stitching. [Japan: mid- to later 18th cent.]. Shuhaku Asai (1643-1705), was a fellow student with Ippo Okamoto of the prominent doctor Sanpaku Ajioka. Asai was the court doctor to the fiefdom of Owari and was considered to be one of Japan's leading authorities on traditional Chinese medicine. His secret writings on acupuncture have all remained in manuscript, and his private lectures were copied by several generations of students. This manuscript begins with a discussion of the yin and yang of the five organs and the acupuncture meridians. There is an explanation of kotsudo (how to determine the pressure points by measurement of the bones). In ancient China, bone length measurement was widely used as the basis for positioning of acupuncture points, a system called the bone length method. This process of using body landmarks and a relative unit of measurement called a "body inch" was developed in ancient China and has remained in use to the present day. The second part of the text is a synopsis of and commentary on the Huangdi Neijing (The Yellow Emperor's Inner Canon), the fundamental work of Chinese medicine, written nearly two millennia ago. Asai's writing on this text is considered to be one of his most important works. The volvelles are a most unusual solution for explaining complex medical concepts. Leaves browned and foxed, slight loss to lower margin of final leaf. From the Bloxham bequest, Rugby School, parts of which recently dispersed, with two bookplates to FEP. A rare survival of a printing of an anonymous letter recounting the Battle of Camp Hill, Birmingham on 3rd April 1643, during the First English Civil War. Hostilities commenced when a detachment of Royalists, under the command of Prince Rupert, engaged with a company of Parliamentarians defending the unfortified town; the Royalist forces would ultimately secure victory. Tavernier, Melchior
1643. Spectacular, separately issued double hemisphere world map by Melchior Tavernier. The double spheres and the two smaller celestial spheres at centre, are bordered by detailed tables of degrees, both in French and German miles. The four elements Air, Earth, Fire and Water are represented in each corner by an eagle, land animals, a dragon and sea creatures. The top right panel of the map includes the date and Tavernier's name, which is also found again in the lower right cartouche. The tip of the large southern landmass, Terra Australis Incognita, is named Beach, which can be traced back to the incorrectly scribed accounts of Marco Polo's travels, which mistakenly corrupted Polo's mythical kingdom of Lochac to Boeach, which was then shortened to Beach. Mercator included both Lochac and Beach and in doing so established an error that would persist on maps well into the 17th century. The north-west coast of America is separated from Asia by Streto di Anian while California is shown as an island. References: Pedley p.33-34, Shirley 360, ill. pl.274. 375mm x 525mm (14.76" x 20.67")

Leyden: Bonaventure & Abraham Elzevir, 1643. 2 parts in one vol., 12mo (130 × 70 mm.), pp. [viii], 143, [1]; 88. Woodcut Elzevir device to the 2 titles. Very light browning throughout, mainly marginal. Early full vellum with yapp edges, exposed cords at joints, spine neatly lettered in later manuscript, now indistinct. An appealing copy. First Elzevir edition of this biography of the French protestant hero Gaspard de Coligny. Coligny had been appointed Admiral of France in 1552 and was captured at the siege of St Quentin in 1557. In the two years of his captivity he became a convinced Calvinist and went on to lead the French Huguenots in the religious wars against Catholic dominance in France. He was implicated in the murder of Francis, Duke of Guise in February 1563, an event which was to lead ultimately to the Massacre of St Bartholomew in 1572, in which Coligny himself was killed under the direct supervision of the Duke's son, Henry. Coligny's life became an inspiration to Protestants throughout Europe. It was first printed in Latin in 1575 and had previously appeared in French earlier the same year, in a quarto edtion. Willems 1546 'ce petit volume, parfaitement exécuté, est un des plus recherché de la collection elzevirienne.'. Order directly from our website for free shipping worldwide.

HORAPOLLO (fl. 5th cent.)
Galliot du Pré and Jean Ruelle, 1643. Two parts with continuous pagination in one volume, 8vo. [8], 107, [1] leaves. Collation: *8 A-N8 O4. The last leaf is all blank but for a typographical ornament on verso. Title within a historiated border, and 193 woodcut vignettes within ornamental borders. The emblems on leaves C3r and G7r are printed upside down; the emblem on leaf I4r is printed sideways. Second part begins on numbered leaf 43 (F2) with special title page: Le second livre d'Orus Apollo niliaque des lettres sacrees des Aegyptiens. On the front pastedown illustrated bookplate F. Valter. Later vellum over boards, some light dampstains and browning, upper blank corner of the last three leaves a bit gnawn, but a fine copy with an old entry of ownership on title page "J. Vosterman", possibly by the famous Dutch landscape painter (ca. 1643-1699) who lived for a while in France and England. FIRST LATIN-FRENCH EDITION. The "editio princeps' of Horapollo's Hieroglyphica was printed by Aldo Manuzio in Venice in 1505. The present Latin edition translated from Greek by Bernardino Trebazio was first printed by Froben at Basel in March 1518 with a dedication to Konrad Peutinger. Numerous scholars cite an edition printed at Augsburg in 1515, which, however, is a ghost. The error probably originated from the dedication to Peutinger, which is dated Augsburg, April 21, 1515 (cf.
