The Thirty Years' War (1618-1648), originally a religious conflict between Catholics and Protestants within the Holy Roman Empire, had by this time widened into a battle between the Bourbons and Habsburgs: hence the French at this time supported both the Catalans and the Portuguese. The War significantly affected the outcome of the Portuguese struggle for indep … [Click Below for Full Description]

D'Avity, Pierre
chez Laurent Cottereau, Paris, 1643. Parts I and II (of 4) in one volume, complete for each part of the world; folio (345 x 220mm). Two engraved folding maps of Africa and the Western Hemisphere by Petrus Bertius, both dated 1640 (second state). Title pages separately printed in red and black with engraved allegorical vignette in each, decorative woodcut initials, chapter head and tail-pieces throughout. Near contemporary mottled calf, spine gilt in compartments, gilt-stamped morocco title label on spine, red sprinkled edges; (occasional small dampstains, lightly browned throughout, maps with come creases, trimmed; lightly rubbed with some small gouges). The Generale was first published in 1619 under the title Les Etats, Empires et Principautez du Monde, this edition is probably edited by Jean Baptist Rocoles (whose name appears in the 1660 edition). The Bertius maps were first published in 1624 and this copy maintains the second state (dated 1640) unique to this edition. The same title was printed by Claude Sonnius and Denys Bechet in Paris that same year 1643, although having the third state maps (dated 1646). Pierre D’Avity was an avid explorer and undertook many historical and geographical tours which lead to several publications on worldly descriptions. This 17th-century two-part compilation is notable for keeping some of the earliest mentions of the rediscovery of the island Martinique in 1637. The work is completed in two further parts on Asia and Europe. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

KOREA - agriculture - technology
18. Paperback. [KOREA - agriculture - technology]. Sallim kyongje [Forest economy]. Manuscript volume of drawings and text representing approximately one quarter of the original 16-chapter farmer's handbook by Hong Man-son (1643- 1715). 19th century. 16x23.5 cm. Heavily worn stiff wrappers bear faded title; inside of wrappers reveals that they are made in part from a recycled printed astrological text. Forty-five leaves of aesthetically appealing brush drawings of agricultural implements, looms, and other technical devices, many depicted in vignettes showing their use by men and women, are followed by fourteen double leaves of textual explanation, copied in an elegant hand. Six additional leaves include extensive notes in a clumsier, later hand, including calendrical charts and personal jottings; one is dated to the kyemi year (most probably 1823 or 1883), likely the latter year because a penciled Japanese syllabary and a drawing of a bicycle suggests continued use after the Japanese occupation.

Schenck, Johann (von Grafenberg)
Lyon, Huguetan. 1643. Mit Kupferstich-Porträt des Autors. Es fehlt das Titelblatt. Folio.

Captaine William Barriffe
John Dawson, London, 1643. Third Edition. Hardcover (rebound in leather). First published in 1635; small quarto. Good in a fine modern binding. [24], 421, [9] pp. Attractive frontispieces (one a portrait, one a coat of arms) and title page all laid back down, the title page with some loss of text to the corner from worming. Worming in the lower margin of the first 75 pages, significant at first and tapering off, but with no loss of text. The book has clearly been taken apart, washed, and rebound at some point, but it is done expertly. Three of the plates have been reattached to new stubs with some yellowing to the tape. 5 plates in all, one large folding battle plan, with a few paper repairs on one edge, typeset formations in the text. Overall, an attractively restored copy of this influential 17th century military manual. It's popularity continued into the 18th century and crossed the Atlantic as there were 2 Boston editions, 1701 and 1706. Size: Quarto (4to). Text is clean and unmarked. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 1 kilo. Category: Military & Warfare; Antiquarian & Rare. Inventory No: 040853. .

- Hirsch-H. BAKER, Sir Richard
Folio. pp. [22], 918, [12] with additional [engraved] title signed W. Sherwin. Double column text. Some old light pen marks on bottom margin of main title. Tear at the bottom of the engraved title is neatly sealed. Pages are overall clean and crisp with an occasional small stain; some light ink marks in margin of p. 235; a couple minor marginal tears neatly sealed. Damp staining and age toning are present on the last few leaves of the index. The fore-edge of the text block contains a small area of light rubbing. Pages 382-383, 422-423, 524 are mis-numbered. Bound in modern half calf with marbled boards. 19th century spine label preserved. Baker’s “Chronicle” was first published in 1643. Editions after 1660 contain the reign of Charles I and a continuation to the year 1660 by Edward Phillips, nephew of John Milton. Phillips’s account of the Restoration principally makes use of notes by Sir Thomas Clarges. The 1730 edition contains corrections to Baker’s numerous errors. Phillips’s contributions are shortened, and a new section (a second continuation) is added which contains the reigns of Charles II, James II, William III and Queen Mary II, Queen Anne, and King George I. Sir Richard Baker (1568-1644/45) was an impoverished English knight and one time Member of Parliament. Baker spent his last years in debtor’s prison where he wrote his “Chronicle of the Kings of England.” Although frequently scorned by intellectuals of the age, Baker’s “Chronicle” achieved a lasting popularity among general readers. DESARGUES (Girard)] BOSSE (A.)
front., (2), 28, 68pp., 66pl.
