It is in the province of Llérida (or Lleida) in Catalunya, but the name derives from Basque.Aside from his struggles with Portugal, which had declared its independence in 1640, Philip IV of Spain had to deal with a rebellion in Catalunya, which, having been deprived of its ancient rights and privileges, had requested Louis XIII's protection in 1640. The Thirty Years? War (1618-1648), originally a religious conflict between Catholics and Protestants within the Holy Roman Empire, had by this time widened into a battle between the Bourbons and Habsburgs: hence the French at this time supported both the Catalans and the Portuguese. IMAGINARY VOYAGES]. [Hall, Joseph, Thomas Campanella and Francis Bacon]
Utrecht: Johannes Waesberg, 1643 - Small 12mo, early calf (modern rebacking), red morocco label, gilt lettering. Engraved title, five folding maps and one plate. ? A collection of three influential imaginary voyages and works of utopian fiction, here first collected together: Mundus Alter et Idem by Joseph Hall (in its third edition - first published in 1605); Civitas Solis, Ida Republic Philosophic by Thomas Campanella (in its second edition - first published in 1623); and Nova Atlantis by Francis Bacon (in its second edition - first published in 1638). Hall's work is the earliest utopia set in Australia, and Campanella's City of the Sun and Bacon's New Atlantis were two of the most reprinted (often together with More's Utopia and Harrington's Oceana) of all the 17th century works on the ideal republic. ? Bookplate of Robert Carl and Marion Oak Sticht on the front paste-down; bookplate of Rodney Davidson on the front free endpaper. The engraved title has been repaired and skillfully laid down, but with some loss of the image near the margin at the gutter; one of the folding maps has been skillfully laid down; the gutters are a little tight from the rebacking; edges of the front free endpaper slightly chipped; very good copy. D'Avity, Pierre
chez Laurent Cottereau, Paris, 1643. Parts I and II (of 4) in one volume, complete for each part of the world; folio (345 x 220mm). Two engraved folding maps of Africa and the Western Hemisphere by Petrus Bertius, both dated 1640 (second state). Title pages separately printed in red and black with engraved allegorical vignette in each, decorative woodcut initials, chapter head and tail-pieces throughout. Near contemporary mottled calf, spine gilt in compartments, gilt-stamped morocco title label on spine, red sprinkled edges; (occasional small dampstains, lightly browned throughout, maps with come creases, trimmed; lightly rubbed with some small gouges). The Generale was first published in 1619 under the title Les Etats, Empires et Principautez du Monde, this edition is probably edited by Jean Baptist Rocoles (whose name appears in the 1660 edition). The Bertius maps were first published in 1624 and this copy maintains the second state (dated 1640) unique to this edition. The same title was printed by Claude Sonnius and Denys Bechet in Paris that same year 1643, although having the third state maps (dated 1646). Pierre D’Avity was an avid explorer and undertook many historical and geographical tours which lead to several publications on worldly descriptions. This 17th-century two-part compilation is notable for keeping some of the earliest mentions of the rediscovery of the island Martinique in 1637. The work is completed in two further parts on Asia and Europe. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

KOREA - agriculture - technology
18. Paperback. [KOREA - agriculture - technology]. Sallim kyongje [Forest economy]. Manuscript volume of drawings and text representing approximately one quarter of the original 16-chapter farmer's handbook by Hong Man-son (1643- 1715). 19th century. 16x23.5 cm. Heavily worn stiff wrappers bear faded title; inside of wrappers reveals that they are made in part from a recycled printed astrological text. Forty-five leaves of aesthetically appealing brush drawings of agricultural implements, looms, and other technical devices, many depicted in vignettes showing their use by men and women, are followed by fourteen double leaves of textual explanation, copied in an elegant hand. Six additional leaves include extensive notes in a clumsier, later hand, including calendrical charts and personal jottings; one is dated to the kyemi year (most probably 1823 or 1883), likely the latter year because a penciled Japanese syllabary and a drawing of a bicycle suggests continued use after the Japanese occupation.
