[Click Below for Full Description]

D'Avity, Pierre
Paris: chez Laurent Cottereau, 1643. Parts I and II (of 4) in one volume, complete for each part of the world; folio (345 x 220mm). Two engraved folding maps of Africa and the Western Hemisphere by Petrus Bertius, both dated 1640 (second state). Title pages separately printed in red and black with engraved allegorical vignette in each, decorative woodcut initials, chapter head and tail-pieces throughout. Near contemporary mottled calf, spine gilt in compartments, gilt-stamped morocco title label on spine, red sprinkled edges; (occasional small dampstains, lightly browned throughout, maps with come creases, trimmed; lightly rubbed with some small gouges). The Generale was first published in 1619 under the title Les Etats, Empires et Principautez du Monde, this edition is probably edited by Jean Baptist Rocoles (whose name appears in the 1660 edition). The Bertius maps were first published in 1624 and this copy maintains the second state (dated 1640) unique to this edition. The same title was printed by Claude Sonnius and Denys Bechet in Paris that same year 1643, although having the third state maps (dated 1646). Pierre D'Avity was an avid explorer and undertook many historical and geographical tours which lead to several publications on worldly descriptions. This 17th-century two-part compilation is notable for keeping some of the earliest mentions of the rediscovery of the island Martinique in 1637. The work is completed in two further parts on Asia and Europe. Very Good. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

LUGO (Francisco de).
Mantuae Carpetanorum, Typis Francisci Martinez, 1643. Impensis Petri Coello Bibliopola (à la fin: Ex Officina Francisci Martines, 1642). - in-4. 4ff. 424pp. 1f. Rousseurs. WALLER, Sir William
London, printed for Edw. Husbands, and are to be sold at his shop in the middle Temple. March 28 1643. small 4to., 8pp., title printed within a typographical border, in a fine early 20th century binding by Riviere of full polished calf, spine gilt and labelled, inner gilt dentelles. A fine copy. First edition. Wing W.542. Sir William Waller, 1598?-1668, a senior Parliamentarian army officer, is said to have been dubbed 'William the Conqueror' on account of his numerous military successes (Portsmouth, Farnham Castle, Winchester, Arundel, Chichester, &c. &c.). 'At the beginning of 1643 royalist successes in the west threatened the Severn valley and Bristol. On 11 February 1643 the earl of Essex appointed Waller major-general of the west. He reached Bristol after rapid night marches but with only 2000 men: this lack of men was to be a continuing source of friction between him and Essex. In late March, after another night march, he had a ?'great victory?' when he took Malmesbury in Wiltshire, where the enemy quickly surrendered, in part persuaded by Waller's noisy pretended preparations for an assault under cover of darkness (A Letter from Sir William Waller … to … Essex … of a Great Victory … at Malmesbury>, 23 Martii, 1643). He had suffered, however, from the half-heartedness of some of his men and a shortage of ammunition, and it was a costly victory. Nevertheless his successes continued.' [Barbara Donagan in ODNB]. The present report to his C.-in-C. is a vividly detailed account of the battle.

KVK/WorldCat (4 copies); cf. Harreld, "An education in commerce: ...", www.helsinki.fi/iehc2006/papers1/Harreld.pdf, p. 9 (1643 ed.); ICCU (1643, 1657, 1668, 1672 and later eds.). Rare third(?) edition of a handy little merchant's manual of international weights, measures and monetary values, aimed especially at Genoese and to some degree Venetian merchants, but providing information for trade with cities throughout Europe and even in Asia and Africa. We have located only four other copies of the present edition. Among the many cities and regions covered outside Europe are Crete, Constantinople, Aleppo, Tripoli, Tunesia, Persia and China. It gives exchange rates and information for understanding their weights and measures. With the lower outside corner of the first 2 leaves restored, slightly affecting the border and a few letters of the text, but otherwise in good condition, with the fore-edge margin of another leaf neatly torn off, not affecting the text, and slightly foxed throughout. A rare 17th-century manual of international weights, measures and currencies: a valuable tool for any history of international trade and commerce.
