BURNET, Gilbert.
1643. STCN (6 copies); Tiele, Bibl. 217. First edition of the Dutch translation of a work on travels through Europe, undertaken and written by Gilbert Burnet (1643-1715). Burnet was a Scottish historian, philosopher, and later Bishop of Salisbury. In 1685 Burnet left Great-Brittain to travel Europe, where he visited the Netherlands, France, Germany, Italy and Switzerland. During his stay in the Netherlands, Burnet got exiled from England by King James II, after writing a pamphlet advising the Dutch prince William and his wife Mary not to support James for the repeal of the Test Act. The text is written in the form of letters, starting in Zurich, to Milan, Florence, Rome, and ending in Nijmegen, where he noted everything that "seemed most remarkable" and was unheard of in any other travelogue.Binding rubbed along the extremities, paper cracked at the hinges (hinges still firm) and spine discoloured. Title-page reattached (restored in the gutter), some spots and smudges throughout and a few leaves slightly browned. A good copy. [Attributes: First Edition]

LUCANUS.
Amsterdam (Amsterodami), Apud Ioannem Blaeuw, 1643. 12mo. (X),328,(9 index),(1 blank) p. Overlapping vellum 13 cm The Pharsalia contains some of the finest rhetoric ever written in verse (Ref: Schweiger 2,563/64; Graesse 4,273; Ebert 12345; Ter Meulen-Diermanse 430) (Details: 5 thongs laced through the joints. Engraved architectural title, depicting 2 Roman generals, Caesar and Pompeius, above them Dea Roma on her throne. Edges dyed red) (Condition: Vellum age-toned and with some stains. Small ink inscription of the frontcover. Front inner hinge cracking) (Note: When the first three books of the only surving work of the Roman poet Marcus Annaeus Lucanus, 39-65 A.D., the epic 'Bellum Civile' or 'Pharsalia', were published in 62 or 63, the emperor Nero was not amused, because it was great poetry, and because it contained eloquent denunciations of tyranny. The epic was on the civil war between Caesar and Pompeius, a war that ended the Roman republic. Lucan soon joined the conspiracy of Piso against Nero, and was forced to commit suicide on its disclosure, spring 65. The remaining books of the Pharsalia, the last, book X being unfinished, were published posthumously after the death of Nero. 'Beginning with the causes of the war between Caesar and Pompey, it carries the story beyond the death of Pompey until it breaks off with Caesar's occupation of Pharos in Egypt. The battle of Pharsalus is related in book 7. (...) All the resources of rhetoric are enlisted to impress the reader; vehement declamation and brilliant epigrammatic utterances (sententiae) are everywhere in evidence … [Click Below for Full Description]

Magnus, Pseudo-Albertus
1643. Inbunden bok. Pergamentband.

[KAJIWARA, Seizen]
Japan: ca. late 16th century or early 17th century. An important manuscript. In 1304, Seizen (or Joka or Shozen) Kajiwara (1266-1337?), a priest and physician, wrote the Toni-sho [Medical Excerpts urgently Copied], a translation of an unidentified Chinese book (though Needham states it is based on Yang Chieh's Tshun Chen Huan Chung Thu of 1113 [Illustrations of the True Form of the Body], the oldest extant illustrated anatomical treatise in Chinese), with additions from Kajiwara's own experiences as a doctor. It is the oldest extant medical work in the Japanese language; several manuscript copies are known to exist. In 1313, Kajiwara rewrote the Toni-sho, greatly enlarging it and the work was now called Manan-ho [Myriad Healing Prescriptions]. "Of particular interest is the 54th volume which was an anatomical atlas with some descriptive text, the pictures probably having been copied from some pre-existing Chinese work - the original source unfortunately not specified. Later on (exactly when is uncertain) this atlas came to be known by the separate title of Gozo roppu-no-zu [in Chinese: Wu zang lin fu; in English: Five Intestines and the Six Abdominal Organs]."-Mestler, A Galaxy of Old Japanese Medical Books, Part V, p. 178. The manuscript is divided into two parts. The first eleven leaves (including the first blank), contain nine richly handcolored drawings of the abdominal organs with accompanying text. These are illustrations of the dissected body of Hsi fan Ou, a dissident Chinese leader who was captured and executed in 1045 along with many of his accomplices. His body w … [Click Below for Full Description]

SICARDO, José (Joseph).
Alden & Landis 698/203 (6 copies); Cordier, Japonica col. 407; Palau 312228; Sabin 80832; WorldCat (8 copies).
