CAVALIERI, Bonaventura.
Bologna: Victor Benatis, 1643. First edition. "Cavalieri, a pupil of Galileo, introduced logarithms into Italy in his Trigonometria and several other works." (Hook & Norman: Origins of Cyberspace, No. 3). "From the standpoint of mathematics alone the Italian writer who influenced the science most in the 17th century was probably Bonaventura Cavalieri, ... [he] was one of the first to recognize the great value of logarithms" (Smith: History of Mathematics, p.362). "Logarithms were introduced into mathematics in the work of Napier in 1614. In Italy such valuable auxiliaries to numerical calculation were introduced by Cavalieri, together with noteworthy developments in trigonometry and applications to astronomy. In this connection we might mention 'Directorium generale uranometricum' (1632), ..., 'Nuova pratica astrologica' (1639), and 'Trigonometria plana, et sphaerica, linearis et logarithmica' (1643). The 'Directorium', the 'Pratica', and the 'Trigonometria' contain, moreover, excellent logarithmictrig-onometric tables." (DSB III, p.152). The final 104 pages of the Trigonometria contain Cavalieri's tables; "the main table in this work the logarithms of numbers up to 1000 are exhibited to seven decimals with characteristic and interscript first differences." (Henderson: Bibliotheca Tabularum Mathematicarum, no. 37). The Trigonometria also contains a preliminary defense by Cavalieri of his method of indivisibles; "Throughout the last three of the four volumes of his 'Centrobaryca' (1635-1641) [Paul] Guldin had commented upon Cavalieri's use of indivisibles and had particu … [Click Below for Full Description]

[28], 468, [46] pp., including additional engraved title and 20 engraved illustrations in text of which all but two are full-page. Internally little browned and with very minor spotting, a few annotations and markings in old hand, two wormholes affecting a few letters to the end. Contemporary plain vellum (remboitage binding, old title in manuscript to spine partially erased). A handsome copy. ----Heirs of Hippocrates 449; Waller 8890; Garrison-Morton 2273 (first edition); NLM/Krivatsy 11055; Norman 1932 (first edition). - The second, enlarged edition (the first contained only 12 engravings) and almost as rare as the original edition printed in Naples 11 years earlier. "The first textbook of surgical pathology. It treats of all kinds of swelling under the 'abscess' and describes neoplasms of the genital organs and sarcomata of bones. Tumours of the breast are classified into four groups, the section devoted to them being one of the most important in the book. This was also the first book to include illustrations of lesions with the text" (Garrison-Morton). Severino's tumor pathology was perhaps the best: He described tumors of the male and female genital organs and gave accounts of massive neoplasms of the bones. He classified breast tumors under four headings and his section on 'mammarum strumae' contains one of the best early discussions of malignancy and benignancy in breast tumors." (Norman). BURNET, Gilbert.
- STCN (6 copies); Tiele, Bibl. 217. First edition of the Dutch translation of a work on travels through Europe, undertaken and written by Gilbert Burnet (1643-1715). Burnet was a Scottish historian, philosopher, and later Bishop of Salisbury. In 1685 Burnet left Great-Brittain to travel Europe, where he visited the Netherlands, France, Germany, Italy and Switzerland. During his stay in the Netherlands, Burnet got exiled from England by King James II, after writing a pamphlet advising the Dutch prince William and his wife Mary not to support James for the repeal of the Test Act. The text is written in the form of letters, starting in Zurich, to Milan, Florence, Rome, and ending in Nijmegen, where he noted everything that "seemed most remarkable" and was unheard of in any other travelogue.Binding rubbed along the extremities, paper cracked at the hinges (hinges still firm) and spine discoloured. Title-page reattached (restored in the gutter), some spots and smudges throughout and a few leaves slightly browned. A good copy.

Rare third(?) edition of a handy little merchant's manual of international weights, measures and monetary values, aimed especially at Genoese and to some degree Venetian merchants, but providing information for trade with cities throughout Europe and even in Asia and Africa. We have located only four other copies of the present edition. Among the many cities and regions covered outside Europe are Crete, Constantinople, Aleppo, Tripoli, Tunesia, Persia and China. It gives exchange rates and information for understanding their weights and measures. With the lower outside corner of the first 2 leaves restored, slightly affecting the border and a few letters of the text, but otherwise in good condition, with the fore-edge margin of another leaf neatly torn off, not affecting the text, and slightly foxed throughout. A rare 17th-century manual of international weights, measures and currencies: a valuable tool for any history of international trade and commerce.

Williams, Roger
London: Gregory Dexter, 1643. First edition of Williams' first printed book. [16], 197, [3] pp. Collation: A-O^8[C4 signed as B4]. 1 vols. Small 8vo (132 x 82 mm). Full red morocco gilt, by Riviere and Son, a.e.g. A fine copy. First edition of Williams' first printed book. [16], 197, [3] pp. Collation: A-O^8[C4 signed as B4]. 1 vols. Small 8vo (132 x 82 mm). "Nature knows no difference between Europe and Americans in blood, birth, bodies, &c" (p. 53). Williams' early career in the Massachusetts colony is well known, as is his banishment in 1635. Gov. John Winthrop warned him of his impending arrest, and Williams was able to flee to Naragansett Bay, where he became a political leader of the community in Providence, and where his ideas of liberty of conscience and separation of church and state took concrete form. In 1643, Williams returned to England to defend the Naragansett Bay settlements, and wrote A Key into the Language of America while on board ship. The book is the first English-Indian dictionary of note, and the careful observation of speech and customs is testament to Williams' respect for the Indians with whom he had such strong ties. It was published in London, whilst Williams was negotiating the charter for Providence Plantations. A landmark work in American history.
