Pallavicino, Ferrante].
"Cambrai" (but Venice), 1642. 12mo. (153) pp., final blank f. Marbled half calf (c. 1780) with giltstamped spine labels and floral endpapers. All edges sprinkled in red. Almost unobtainable first edition of the author's most notorious work: "Prima ediz. stamp. colla falsa data di Cambrai nel 1642" (Libr. Vinciana, p. 21). "The Rhetoric of Whores"), a scandalous anti-Jesuit work, "demonstrates why Pallavicino was the only Italian author of his epoch capable of a coherent vision that integrated satire, skepticism, and naturalistic morality" (Muir, Culture Wars [Cambridge: Harvard, 2007], p. 90). The book is written in the form of a dialogue between an aged prostitute and her naive apprentice. The fifteen lessons of the old whore were based on Cipriano Suarez's "De arte rhetorica", the manual used in Jesuit schools. Muir pointedly notes, "By systematically pursuing the parallels between rhetorical persuasion and erotic seduction, Pallavicino demonstrates how the high art of rhetoric has the same instrumental character as the lowly deceptions of the prostitute." - Some browning throughout. Prettily bound; removed from the Nádasdy library with stamp on title page. Exceedingly rare: no copy in auction records internationally; the earliest recorded copy sold in 1960 (another false "Cambrai" imprint, dated 1644). BL (Italian Books) 647. OCLC 65523066. Cf. Libr. Vinciana 75 (1673 Villafranca ed. only). Englisch 605. Brunet IV, 1251. [Att … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

Gottfried, Johann Ludwig
Third edition; an interesting history of the world, in an imposing volume, contemporary-bound in a peculiar blindstamped skin, with devices on covers coloured by a contemporary hand. The binding seems to by in imitation of the Wittenberg binder Thomas Kruger. A remarkable binding, in a strictly untouched state, featuring a medallion on the front cover with contemporary colour representing "Caritas and the beggar", and lettered in blind re-enhanced with red with the inscription "Chronica J. L. Gottfridi M.DC.XXXXII. Matthaeus Merian Frankcfurt Ammain", thus identifying the work and printers details; the lower cover is more austere in decoration, simply showing the Brandenburg arms, also heightened with colour, this time red and black. The binding is probably attributable to a follower of the Kruger workshop (see his Melanchton/Luther-decorated binding at the BL). The Margraviate of Brandenburg, and their longest ruling house, the Hohenzollern, played a significant role in the history of Germany and Central Europe, by the 17th century it inherited the Duchy of Prussia, paving the way to the Kingdom of Prussia, which would help shape modern Europe; the relevance and influence of the Margraves was rivalled by only a few houses across Europe (having had part of the Elections for the Holy Roman Emperor, participating in the Prussian victories and expansion in the 18th century, the dissolution of the Holy Roman Empire in the 19th century, and the unification of Germany in the 19th century), this binding, commissioned for one of them, or presented as a gift by them, is a wonderf … [Click Below for Full Description]
