COEHOORN, Menno van.
[16], 181, [3] pp.Fine first edition of the most important work on fortification by Menno van Coehoorn (1641-1704), Frisian artillery officer and military engineer, which introduced a new Dutch manner of fortification and siege warfare, covering both defence and offence, and challenging the approach that had been established by Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban (1633-1707) in France. Though developed in part to suit the level terrain of the Low Countries, his fortification techniques and his more active deployment of troops in the defence of fortifications revolutionized warfare internationally and the present book was translated into English, French, German and even Russian. He played a major role in designing and building Dutch fortifications. With a 1704 owner's inscription of Assuerus Vegelin van Claerbergen (1687-1771), a grandson of Philip Ernst Vegelin van Claerbergen (1613-1693) who from 1641 had been a leading figure in the court of Prince Willem Frederik van Nassau, stadholder of Friesland. FURTTENBACH, Joseph, the Elder (1591-1667)
Augsburg: Johann Schultes and Mathias Rembold, 1641. From the Collection of Arthur & Charlotte Vershbow. Folio (300 x 203 mm). Letterpress title printed in red and black (torn and repaired), 15 double-page or folding engraved plates or plans by Matthäus Rembold (1629-1657), on guards. Contemporary vellum. Some plates trimmed closely. Provenance: purchased from Ars Libri, 1990. FIRST EDITION of this work on civil architecture by the eminent Ulm architect Joseph Furttenbach the Elder. The Architectura privata describes his own dwelling-house and grounds, and the fine copperplates show the basics and elevations of the house, windows, portals, grotto and gardens, among other things. With its small grotto, richly decorated with rare flowers arranged in compartments, Furttenbach's garden courtyard epitomizes the intimate "secret garden" owned by the wealthy bourgeoisie in early seventeenth-century Germany and the Netherlands. The grotto in his garden is described as being filled with artifice and exotica, including shell-encrusted sculptures and waterworks, painted cosmological imagery, and mirrors. The flowers depicted are identifiable as the most sought after and costly bulbs of the period, the narcissus, tulip, fritillary, and crown imperial, demonstrating Furttenbach's knowledge of current botanical research. Following his studies in architecture and engineering in Italy, Furttenbach returned to Ulm where he designed buildings and gardens and published a number of treatises on architecture and fortification. His construction of the Ulm city fortifications were among t … [Click Below for Full Description]

PÉTAU, Denis (Dionysius PETAVIUS).
[24], 354, [8] pp.First edition of a controversial work by Denis Pétau containing the results of his historical research on the functioning of Christian clerical authorities (primarily bishops) from the time of the Church Fathers to his own time, followed by a discussion of various questions of dogma. The text contains many citations from Latin and Greek Fathers. It is divided into two "books": liber primus "qui est de episcopis, & eorum jurisdictione, ac dignitate" (pp. 1-160) discusses the very delicate subject of the authority of bishops, a major issue in the disputes between Catholics and Protestants; and liber secundus "in quo certae fidei, vel rerum ecclesiasticarum quaestiones disputantur" (pp. 161-354) discusses various other questions of dogma related to widespread heresies. Pétau was a prodigious author and "one of the most distinguished theologians of the seventeenth century" (Catholic encyclopaedia), with works ranging over chronology, history, philosophy, patristics and the history of dogma. He is now best known for his vast, but unfinished six-volume work on dogma, the first systematic attempt to treat the development of Christian doctrine from an historical point of view. With the foot margin of C5 (pp. 41-42) cut away, with no loss of text, otherwise in fine condition. The binding has some cracks in the hinges but is still in very good condition.l De Backer & Sommervogel VI, col. 606, no. 39; Goldsmith P855; Cathedral libraries cat. P607.

Prijs: Euro 1.750,- (excl. lijst).

GRIM, Hermann Niklas.
1641. Frontispiece plus [12], [2 blank], 386; [1], [1 blank], 389-475; [11] pp.Rare enlarged second edition of a pharmacological compendium for the Dutch East Indies (this edition adding a pharmacopoeia) by the Swedish traveller, naturalist and physician Herman Niklas Grim (1641-1711), first published at Batavia in the Dutch East Indies in 1679. Grim was appointed physician of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) in 1671 and set sail to Ceylon, where he wrote his first pharmacological work, in Dutch, Laboratorium chymicum, gehouden op het voortreffelyke eylandt Ceylon, published at Batavia in the in 1677. In it, he describes the medical practices of Ceylon: which animal products, vegetables and minerals they use for medicines, how the native doctors prepare these medicines and which diseases they cure. A Latin pirated edition appeared in Amsterdam in 1679.In that year Grim also published the first edition of the present work under the title Chirurgiae & medicinae practici compendium medico-chimicum. In 1678 he had become chief surgeon at Batavia, so the present work concerns the medicinal plants of the Dutch East Indies and their medicinal preparation for various diseases. The recipes are extensively described. The present copy is the second, enlarged edition, printed in 1684 in Augsburg. At the end of this enlarged edition is the rare Pharmacopeia Indica, apparently the first pharmacopoeia for the East Indies. It discusses several plants, herbs and animal products that could be used in the Dutch East Indies, and in Europe, for medical purposes. Both works are pioneering effor … [Click Below for Full Description]

Pharmacopoeia Bruxellensis: jussu amplissimi senatus edita. Brussels, Jan Mommaert II, 1641. Small 4to (19.5 x 15 cm). With engraved title-page by Cornelius Galle the elder after Anthonis Sallaert. 19th-century half calf, gold-tooled spine. [32], 224, [8] pp. First edition of the first official pharmacopoeia of Brussels, containing numerous medicinal recipes and offering much insight into the 17th-century medical practice in the Low Countries. Brussels had begun discussing plans to establish a Collegium Medicum ca. 1605, but failed to do so. A 1636 plague gave city magistrates the impetus to compile a pharmacopoeia, however, and they commissioned four leading city physicians to compile the present Brussels pharmacopoeia. No apothecaries were officially consulted in the compilation of the Brussels pharmacopoeia, reflecting the growing status of physicians and declining status of apothecaries. Amsterdam had produced the first official pharmacopoeia in the Low Countries in 1636, based in part on Valerius, but the Brussels physicians chose to take the 1638 Paris Codex medicamentarius Parisiensis as their principal model. With early owner's inscription on title-page and early manuscript annotations in the margins of pp. 169, 175 and 213. Trimmed when rebound in the 19th-century, shaving the top of the title-page and the manuscript annotations, smudges and small waterstains throughout, and some minor damage to the lower inner corner of the first few leaves including the frontispiece. [8], 164 pp. First Dutch translation of the Quran, translated after the first German version by Salomon Schweigger (1616). Schweiger, a protestant minister who sojourned in Istanbul for three years, knew little Arabic and translated from an Italian version of 1547, which on its turn was based on a Latin rendering of the original Arabic. The work is bound with a rare second edition of a (critical) life of Mohammed with an account of the early spread of Islam (ad 2), and a second Dutch edition of the prophetic visions of the Byzantine Emperors Leo VI and Severus on the end of the Ottoman Empire (ad 3), both works first published in 1627.The book comes from the library of the wealthy Amsterdam merchant Aaron de Joseph de Pinto (1710-1758), a distinguished book collector who had his books bound by the so-called "Fleur-de-Lis Bindery" at The Hague. Small 4to (18.5 x 14 cm). With a woodcut on the title-page showing several women assaulting and name-calling a writer. Decorated paper over boards (ca. 1900). [3], [1 blank], [14], 53, [1 blank] pp. Very rare first edition in Dutch of The araignment of lewde, idle, forward, and unconstant women, a popular misogynistic pamphlet originally published in English in 1615. "Attacks on women (and defences of them) had been an established pamphlet genre for decades ... and the Araignment owes its predecessors an immense (if unacknowledged) debt, for ideas and for whole sentences. What does distinguish the Araignment is the comprehensiveness of its attack on women, combined with an unprecedented level of vituperation ... While others may adopt a tone of ironic sophistication, or jocular rib-nudging, this author lacks sufficient control over his own style to indicate when and if he is assuming a pose" (Butler). Although the book contains numerous arguments drawn from the Bible and classical antiquity, Swetnam (d. 1621), a fencing master, was no scholar and stated in the introduction that he wrote for "the ordinary sort of giddy headed young men". As his intended reader was either a bachelor or a newly-wed young man, most of Swetman's arguments are of an economic nature (mostly the spend-thrift wife) but he also discusses sexual promiscuity and nagging. Possibly due to its unscholarly nature, the pamphlet proved extremely popular and sparked numerous counter-pamphlets, some … [Click Below for Full Description]

Modern boards, cloth spine. [4], 104 pp. Rare first and only edition of one of the best satirical poems of the 17th century (Te Winkel). Its publication would lead to the author, a Dordrecht physician and poet, being excommunicated by the church council of Dordrecht. The poem gives the pleas of Venus and Minerva held before the divine council, presided by Jupiter. Venus accuses Minerva of ruining the youth with her wisdom, making them melancholic and destroying their health, while she herself only brings enjoyment to the people. Minerva replies with pointing out the dignity of the sciences, which brings much more fulfilment than the brief satisfaction of love. In the following reply Venus shows how detrimental and useless all wisdom is, treating theology, law, medicine, philosophy, literature and history. When Minerva is about to reply, she is cut short by Jupiter. While most people were amused, the church council of Dordrecht wasn't and Daniel Jonctys (1600-1654) was excommunicated. He would write a fruitless reply a year later (Apologie, of gedrongen onschuld, 1642) after which he moved to Rotterdam, where he was eventually appointed alderman. With the bookplate of the notable Dutch bookcollector Bob Luza (1893-1980). Some spots in the first few leaves and the foot margin of the last leaf soiled, but otherwise in very good condition and wholly untrimmed. STCN 831774673; Te Winkel III, pp. 514-516.

Written round 1436, "the Book of creatures belongs to the tradition of medieval works that follow the imperative according to which faith must evolve into seeking understanding. It was given the name of Natural theology because, as asserted in the prologue, it sets out to offer every human being the means of reaching the truth of Christian dogma, thanks to his own efforts, just by reading into the book of God's creation". However, although the book tries to guide the reader towards the fundamental truths of Christianity, basing itself on the visible order of creatures, it is halfway stated that since human nature is corrupt, the scriptures are more important and "God's word is to be believed in itself" (Habert).Although the translation was commissioned by the Paris booksellers and appeared without Montaigne's name, it brought him his first fame as a man of letters. During his career he would return to Sabunde, publishing an Apology for Raymund of Sabunde among his famous Essays en revising his translation in 1580. First published in 1569, Montaigne's translation was reprinted several times, with the final edition appearing in 1641. After that the text would only reappear in 19th-century editions of Montaigne's complete works.Binding s … [Click Below for Full Description]

PÉTAU, Denis (Dionysius PETAVIUS).
Dissertationum ecclesiasticarum libri duo, in quibus de episcoporum dignitate, ac potestate; deque aliis ecclesiasticis dogmatibus disputatur.Paris, Sebastien Cramoisy, 1641. 8vo. With Cramoisy's engraved coupling storks device on the title-page. Gold-tooled red goatskin morocco (ca. 1700?), gilt edges. [24], 354, [8] pp. First edition of a controversial work by Denis Pétau containing the results of his historical research on the functioning of Christian clerical authorities (primarily bishops) from the time of the Church Fathers to his own time, followed by a discussion of various questions of dogma. 41-42) cut away, with no loss of text, otherwise in fine … [Click Below for Full Description]

[PROPAGANDA FIDE].
Africa [-] Greci - Italo Greci [-] Armeni di Venezia [-] varie.[Rome and perhaps elsewhere, ca. 1758-1764 (transcribing original documents going back to at least 1664)]. 4to. Collection of manuscript transcriptions of about 30 letters and other documents. Contemporary Italian sheepskin parchment over flexible boards. [416] pp., including about 15 blank leaves. A large collection of about thirty 18th-century transcriptions of letters and other documents from Catholic missionaries writing from or concerning the missions in Africa (including Madagascar, Algiers and the Barbary Coast), Greece, Italy (including the Mekhitarist Armenian Catholic monastery on the island San Lazzaro degli Armeni in the Venetian lagoon) and Japan. The exact number depends how one defines "one" document. Most of the letters transcribed here were originally written at the time of the Portuguese, French and Spanish efforts to suppress the Jesuits in their territories, both at home and in their colonies, beginning around 1750 and leading to the banning of Jesuits from the Portuguese empire (1759), France (1764) and Spain (1767). The Pope finally dissolved the Jesuit order in 1773, but it was re-established in 1814. The documents from this period, some explicitly about attempts to suppress the Jesuits, were clearly transcribed when they were still new, but the collection also includes transcriptions of older letters and documents.Nearly all concern the Sacra Congregatio de Propaganda Fide, "the department of the pontifical administration charged with the spread of Catholicism and with the regulation of e … [Click Below for Full Description]

PASSE, Crispijn de (the younger).
Small oblong 4to (15 x 19 cm). With engraved frontispiece, an etched plate, and 25 engravings in text (ca. 9.5 x 14 cm), each of the engravings showing 2 oval portraits of men and women, who sinned against the rules of marriage. The etching shows a cart drawn by two goats, a satyr as driver, and on the cart a joyful party of three women and two men. Modern half vellum. [45] ll. Extremely rare issue, including the text in German, of the first and only edition of a print series warning against the failures of marriage, showing 50 portraits of (adulterous) chambermaids, madams and pimps, merchants, steersmen, hostesses, priests, tailors, astronomers, philosophers etc., the whole divided into French & Dutch women and Spanish & Italian women. The plates are accompanied by trilingual farcical poems and followed by a farcical poem on adultery in Dutch, with accompanying etching. The series was published simultaneously in two issues, the less rare one with letterpress texts in French, Dutch and English (with the English title: The mistake off Matrimonij[!]), and the present with the English replaced by the German text, apparently during the press run. The watermark is vaguely like Heawood 135, 138 and 139, but at least sometimes with a single bend and with 3(?) initials below, difficult to read, possibly script "M J E".The book is related in its design to De Passe's successful Miroir des courtisannes (1631) and Les vrais pourtraits de quelques unes des plus grandes dames de la chrestie … [Click Below for Full Description]

[SWETNAM, Joseph] and Willem CHRISTIAENS (translator).
