Amsterdam: Joannes Janssonius, 1641-39-41. - 3 volumes. Folio (19 3/8 x 12 2/8 inches). Three fine hand-coloured engraved title-pages, those to volumes one and II HEIGHTENED IN GOLD (title-page to volume III and index leaf of volume II restored). 319 fine double-page engraved maps, hand-coloured in outline, a few with cartouches HEIGHTENED IN GOLD, woodcut illustrations and tailpieces (light discolouration and browning particularly to margins, some offsetting, several other leaves with margins strengthened, occasional clean tears, some early repairs). FINE 18th-century Italian mottled vellum, all edges gilt (extremities a bit rubbed). A rare and attractive set of the 3 volume French edition of Jansson's "Atlas Novus". The set collates as follows: volume I, Koeman II Me97B, 109 maps; volume II, a variant of 92B with 98 rather than 99 maps, and with the title-page and address not on overslips, probably an intermediate state between 92A and 92B; volume III, 112 maps, a variant of Me 39B with the date on the title-page altered to 1641. By 1638 Jansson had taken control of the publishing firm begun by his father-in-law Jodocus Hondius, and issued his "Atlas Novus", a completely new work although based on the work of Mercator. He expanded the atlas to three volumes in competition with Blaeu, it was a great success and published long after Jansson's death in 1664. Catalogued by Kate Hunter [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Written by N.N. and published by I. Sherman, of Lincolnes Inne: Gen. London: Printed for Iohn Grove, 1641. [ii], 42, [i.e. 43], [1] pp. Lacking first leaf, a blank. Quarto (6-1/2" x 5-1/2"). Stab-stitched pamphlet with untrimmed edges bound into plain later plain wrappers. Moderate toning to text, light foxing to a few leaves, light soiling to title page. $1,500. * Only edition. The Civil-War inspired several proposals to liberalize and modernize areas of the common law. A fine example of this literature, N.N.'s tract disputes the validity of primogeniture and other "ancient" aspects of inheritance and succession. A contentious piece, it offers a clever argument grounded in classic common-law sources and scripture.

- in-4. 4ff. 17pp. (i.e.71). 1f. 11).         Tulip Drawing].

Holland 18th century - Watercolour on Dutch laid paper, excellent condition, some mild browning. Dimensions: 180 by 130mm. (7 by 5 inches). From a "Tulip Book", in the manner of Anthony Claesz who produced his own "Tulip Book" in c. 1641. These florilegia were commissioned to illustrate the differences between varieties of tulip bulb which at the time demanded such high prices. The beauty of these works ensured that their images would be copied for decades to come by amateur painters and gardeners alike. Claesz was a Dutch master in his own right, with several highly accomplished works to his name. However, as with most of the great Dutch masters of this period, they happily supplemented their income by illustrating such books. It also allowed them to study in detail subjects that would later be incorporated in their great flower pieces.

Augsburg: Johann Schultes and Mathias Rembold, 1641. From the Collection of Arthur & Charlotte Vershbow. Folio (300 x 203 mm). Letterpress title printed in red and black (torn and repaired), 15 double-page or folding engraved plates or plans by Matthäus Rembold (1629-1657), on guards. Contemporary vellum. Some plates trimmed closely. Provenance: purchased from Ars Libri, 1990. FIRST EDITION of this work on civil architecture by the eminent Ulm architect Joseph Furttenbach the Elder. The Architectura privata describes his own dwelling-house and grounds, and the fine copperplates show the basics and elevations of the house, windows, portals, grotto and gardens, among other things. With its small grotto, richly decorated with rare flowers arranged in compartments, Furttenbach's garden courtyard epitomizes the intimate "secret garden" owned by the wealthy bourgeoisie in early seventeenth-century Germany and the Netherlands. The grotto in his garden is described as being filled with artifice and exotica, including shell-encrusted sculptures and waterworks, painted cosmological imagery, and mirrors. The flowers depicted are identifiable as the most sought after and costly bulbs of the period, the narcissus, tulip, fritillary, and crown imperial, demonstrating Furttenbach's knowledge of current botanical research. Following his studies in architecture and engineering in Italy, Furttenbach returned to Ulm where he designed buildings and gardens and published a number of treatises on architecture and fortification. His construction of the Ulm city fortifications were among the strongest of their time, remaining impregnable during the Thirty Years' War. Berlin Kat. 1958.

The Proctor and Parator Their Mourning: Or, The Lamentation of the Doctors Commons for their Downfall. Being a True Dialogue, Relating the Fearfull Abuses and Exorbitancies of Those Spirituall Courts, under the Names of Sponge the Proctor, And Hunter the Parator. [London]: S.n., 1641. [16] pp. Large woodcut vignette to title page. Quarto (7" x 5-1/4"). Stab-stitched pamphlet bound into recent cloth, gilt title to spine. Binding slightly cocked, a bit of fading to spine, small owner bookplate to foot of rear pastedown. Moderate toning, recent paper repair to Leaf B1, with negligible loss to a few letters, a few tiny markings to title page, which is lightly soiled. A nice copy of a rare title. $1,750. * First edition. A satirical tract about the lawyer and court officers of Doctor's Commons, who had the excusive right to try matrimonial, testamentary and probate cases, which were heard in the civil-law based ecclesiastical courts. It takes issue with the high fees and protracted legal proceedings endemic in those courts, especially with cases involving probate. In this anonymous work, "Sponge, the Proctor," a lawyer, and 'Hunter, the Parator," a combination of bailiff and sheriff, discuss the best ways to profit from the abuses of the Ecclesiastical Courts and celebrate the exclusive power of the Doctors' Commons. To quote Sponge, it is "like a wildernesse for wilde beasts, then men." This work had a second edition in 1642. The first edition was reprinted in 1820. Both editions and the reprint are scarce. OCLC locates 7 copies of the first edition in North America, 3 in law libraries (Boston College, Harvard, Yale). English Short-Title Catalogue R19853.

Sir John Doddridge, a judge during the reign of Charles I, was a formidably learned jurist who was both a common lawyer and a civilian who held a D.C.L. from Cambridge. Held in high esteem by Holdsworth, he is best known for English Lawyer: Describing a Method for the Managing of the Laws of this Land (1631). He may also be the actual author of William Sheppard's The Touch-Stone of Common Assurances (1648), though this is still a matter of debate. A Compleat Parson is based on a series of lectures on ecclesiastical law delivered at New-Inn. It is a work on advowson, which is the right to appoint or nominate a person to a vacant church benefice. Both editions of this work are scarce.         Document signed ("Carolus R.").

Westminster, 12. II. 1641. - Latin handwriting, calligraphy and copperplate engraving (portrait) on vellum. Ca. 600 x 510 mm (with plica folded). Wants seal. Royal exemplification for the legal transfer of a property, the manor Worthen in Shropshire (Salop) with all its appurtenances, including a mill, messuage, land, meadows, pastures, woods, and parts in Brockton, Over and Nether Tickley, Hampton, Hayes, Ewerne, Westbury, Alberbury and Marton, as well as the rectory of the church of Worthen. Isaac Morgan and Samuel Whitehall were the owners and sellers. As the property was entailed, selling it to Messrs. John Parker and John Sand necessitated a roundabout procedure - a collusive action known as a "Common Recovery", in the course of which the purchasers would claim their alleged inheritance in the Court of Common Pleas from a fictitious third party. As this party failed to appear in court, the claimant would win the case by default, "barring the entails", and the property so acquired became a free allodium. The present royal document constitutes a so-called "Exemplification of a Common Recovery", a formal transcript of the proceedings in the monarch's name, using an elaborate script imitating a medieval chancery hand (we are indebted to Mr Michael Webb, of the Bodleian Library, for his valuable assistance in cataloguing this item). The following year marked the beginning of the Civil War; in January 1649, Charles I was sentenced to death by Parliament and executed for High Treason. - Ink rubbed in places, otherwise well preserved. Folded.

First edition. Exceedingly rare account on the naval engagement occurred off the port of Havana in 1641 between the Dutch pirate fleet and the Spanish fleet commanded by Geronimo de Sandoval and Juan de Vega Bazan. "Having sortied from Havana to Cape Corrientes earlier this month to chase away any Dutch interlopers prowling off Cuba´s shoreline, the battle fleet of Adms. Geronimo Gomez de Sanfoval and Juan de Vega Bazan has circled around the southern coast to within sight... the next day, 17 Dutch vessels appear. They pause to form up into battle formation and then charge into the waiting Spaniards five hours later" (Wars of the Americas: A Chronology of Armed Conflict, David Marley), the imprint begins with a note on the resolution of the Dutch in attacking, and the faux information they had on the amount of Dutch vessels sailing in those waters. The narrator goes into detail about the courage and strength in battle of the Spanish, and ends with the losses suffered. Extremely rare, the only copy traceable on AE is the one offered by Maggs in 1927, VI, item 361. Only one copy in the United States, Brown University, the rest are microfilms. Palau, 258221.         Cosmographie ou doctrine de la sphere. Avec un traitté de la geographie. Sedan, François Chayer, 1661. 8vo. Near contemporary half vellum.

Cf. Barbier 9356; Houzeau & Lancaster 10920; KVK & WorldCat (3 copies of 1641 ed.); not in BN Paris; Zinner. Apparently the only surviving copy, not found recorded, of the second (and last) edition of a book devoted to astrolabes, globes, cosmography and geography by the French philosopher Claude Pithois (1587-1676). A two-page foreword addressed "a ceux qui le meritent" notes among other things that the book is useful for people compiling almanacs or writing horoscopes, but does not refer to the earlier edition. A four-page "prelude" in XII numbered points follows, mainly defining terms, then IV numbered treatises: "Traitté de la sphere en general" (on Ptolemaic astrolabes, the earth and the universe: the "sphere artificielle" and "sphere naturelle"), "Traitté de la region celeste" (on the sun, moon, planets and stars, including constellations), "Traitté de la region elementaire" (on the earth, subterranean regions, seas and air, associated with the four elements) and "Traitté des principes de la geographie" (with special emphasis on globes). It is a simple introduction to the subjects, explaining many different terms and concepts. Until now it was known only from the very rare first edition (1641), printed by Pierre Jannon at Sedan. The deliberate destruction of the books of the Protestant Academy at Sedan in 1681 no doubt contributed to the rarity of Sedan books of this period and this one was probably intended for students, who no doubt wore out most copies. With some minor marginal chips, tears and holes, not approaching the text, but otherwise in very good condition and almost entirely untrimmed. The binding is good, with only a few tiny wormholes in the spine. The apparently unique surviving copy of the second and last edition of a work on astrolabes and cosmography, also very rare in its first edition.
