Virgil (Vergil)
Paris: Typographia Regia (Imprimerie Nationale), 1641. TYPOGRAPHIC TOUR DE FORCE PRINTED AT THE LOUVRE ¶ [4], 498, [2] p. | Folio | pi^2 A-3P^4 3Q^6 | 385 x 272 mm ¶ Includes Virgil's Eclogues, Georgics, and Aeneid. This was the first classical work published by the Imprimerie nationale and only its sixth publication overall. Following the advice of Cardinal Richelieu, Louis XIII founded the state-run press in 1640 and installed it in the Louvre, where it remained until 1792. Hundreds of editions issued from the official press during its century and a half in the royal palace, and the press remains in operation to this day. ¶ At a time when typography was in a general decline, institutionally run presses like the Imprimerie nationale produced some of 17th-century Europe's finest books. Under the inaugural direction of Sébastien Cramoisy, the press employed first-rate fonts on paper carefully sourced from Auvergne merchants Ferrier et Danvilliers. The books were so prone to imitation that in 1642 the state thought it necessary to issue a notice explicitly forbidding the exportation of punches. ¶ The present Virgil, handsomely printed in a large Roman type by Robert Granjon, represents a masterful combination of typographic elegance and restrained embellishment. Even in 1902, the Virgil was "sought after as a specimen of typography" (Roberts). Baroque painter Nicolas Poussin designed the title page, as he did all of the earliest titles for the Imprimerie nationale. "The frontispiece designed by him for the works of Virgil and engraved in broad manner by Claude M … [Click Below for Full Description]

1641. The Right to Nominate Candidates to Fill a Vacant Church Benefice Doddridge (Dodderidge), Sir John [1555-1628]. A Compleat Parson: Or a Description of Advowsons, Or Church-Living. Wherein is Set Forth, The Interests of the Parson, Patron, And Ordinary, &c. With Many Other Things Concerning the Matter, As They Were Delivered at Severall Readings at New-Inne, And Now Published for the Common Good, by W.I. London: Printed by John Grove, 1641. Contemporary calf, blind rules with corner fillets to boards, raised bands and lettering piece to spine, endpapers renewed. Moderate browning to text, faint spotting to a few leaves. An appealing copy in a handsome binding. * Second and final edition. Sir John Doddridge, a judge during the reign of Charles I, was a formidably learned jurist who was both a common lawyer and a civilian who held a D.C.L. from Cambridge. Held in high esteem by Holdsworth, he is best known for English Lawyer: Describing a Method for the Managing of the Laws of this Land (1631). He may also be the actual author of William Sheppard's The Touch-Stone of Common Assurances (1648), though this is still a matter of debate. A Compleat Parson is based on a series of lectures on ecclesiastical law delivered at New-Inn. Hendrick HONDIUS (Amsterdam 1597 - 1651)
Incisione in rame, fine coloritura coeva, in buone condizioni. This map of Africa, realized by Hendrik Hondius, is a reissue of Jodocus Hondius' map, without the decorative borders, but with the excudit of Janssonius, on lower right. While the general geography for this map is taken from Willem Blaeu's wall map of 1608 and his 1617 folio map, this example represents a considerable advance in the detail and accuracy of Africa from Hondius' prior maps. Geographical improvements include a more rounded southern Cape, the naming of the Rio de Spiritu Santo and of the CuamaRiver, the insertion of Zimbaos and alteration in the shape of Madagascar. The Kingdom of Monomotapa fills the entire southern tip of Africa. However, the map is also filled with fictitious rivers and mountains and shows the origin of the Nile conforming to the Ptolemaic tradition of twin lakes located below the equator, as is typical of 17th Century cartography. This example comes from a Latin edition; the date on the cartouche can't be read. Copper engraving, fine contemporary colour, in good condition. O. I. Norwich, "Norwich's Maps of Africa", map 34; R. L. Betz "The Mapping of Africa..." (2007), map 58; Schil … [Click Below for Full Description]

Harmensz van Rijn detto REMBRANDT (Leida 1606 - Amsterdam 1669)
Acquaforte, firmata e datata in lastra in basso a destra "Rembrandt. f 1641". Etching, signed and dated "Rembrandt. f 1641". Example of second final state, with further shading added to the waterfall and the bank on the right, with the burin. Good example printed on laid paper, trimmed close to the platemark, in excellent condition. After the painting executed in 1626, Rembrandt reprised the Eunuch theme; Acts 8:26-40 tells the story of the apostle Philip and his encounter with an African eunuch on the road from Jerusalem to Gaza. The eunuch, supervisor of the treasury of the queen of Ethiopia, is returning from a visit to the holy city and is engrossed in reading the prophet Isaiah. Philip explains the scriptures, convincing the eunuch that Jesus is indeed the Son of God. The latter then asks to be baptised, a request the apostle fulfils. B … [Click Below for Full Description]

The first edition of playwright and poet Thomas Heywood's (c.1573-1641) compilation of political prophecies attributed to the seer of Arthurian legend. Heywood based his work on that of earlier English chroniclers, such as Holinshed and Fabyan, and evidently drew inspiration from Geoffrey of Monmouth's Prophetiae Merlini (1134), to provide an account of what he claimed were the accurate predictions made by Merlin foretelling the course of England's history up to the coronation of Charles I; rather sensibly Heywood did not extend beyond that monarch's reign. The frontispiece wood-engraving of Merlin reading a book entitled 'The Red Dragon', with Thong Castle and both real and imaginary animals in the background, is generally attributed to Hollar. Tagli spruzzati. Rarissima prima edizione. Cfr. Sapori, 1043; Piantanida, 1094; Edizioni giuridiche antiche in lingua italiana, I, 1, p. 373. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

FONTANUS (Nicolaus)
Amstelodami [Amsterdam], Henrici Laurentii Bibliopolae, 1641, in-4, cartonnage moderne, papier marbré bleu, dos lisse muet. A brief overview of amyloids and Alzheimer's disease). London: 1641. GREAT overall condition, especially in keeping with the age (almost 400 years old), rebound partially in beautiful leather, intact, crisp, amazing! Slight wear on cover boards (as pictured) -- otherwise excellent condition, and that especially applies to the internal contents. You've heard of Foxe's Book of Martyrs. This is real deal -- an unabridged, 3 volume, antique original set from 1641 -- of the full Ecclesiastic History: Containing the Acts and Monuments of Martyrs. Although John Fox(e) died in 1587, subsequent editions of this work still reflect conditions (and possibly printed pages) that existed during his lifetime. This is especially evident in the dedication of this work to Queen Elizabeth I, who was no longer herself alive in 1641. Yet there is also a summary of Fox's own life and work. If you look carefully at the pages in the photos, you will see... Queen Elizabeth I The execution of William Tyndale (with famous last words, "Lord, open the King of England's eyes") The spreading of John Wycliffe's ashes over the River Swift The execution of Nicolas Ridley and Hugh Latimer under Queen Mary ("bloody Mary") A foldout of Windsor Castle (still intact!) with executions of Protestants in the foreground There are descriptions of John Wycliffe and the Lollards, ancient believers who challenged the Roman Catholic Church, and woodcuts galore -- especially the torture and death of those who paid a heavy price for putting their faith in the Bible as opposed to the Roman Catholic hierarchy. There is a chronology of major events throughout church history, with … [Click Below for Full Description]
