La Vie de Claude Bernard dit le Pauvre Prestre [The Life of Claude Bernard, the Poor Priest]

Claude Sonnius & Denis Bechet, Paris 1642 - Text in French. Measures 7" X 5" and 567 pages. Very good full vellum binding. Joints are fine and hinges are fine. Vellum covers curling mildly, as vellum does. Provided with a custom cut removable protective Mylar cover. Contents are very good. Some soil and light water stains on first few pages. Otherwise the book is clean and bright inside. Old bookplate. The author, Thomas Le Gauffre, was principal advisor to the King's court, first bishop of New France in 1645, and was designated as spiritual successor of Father Claude Bernard. Father Claude Bernard (December 23, 1588 - March 23, 1641) was a French Roman Catholic priest who was active in ministry to prisoners and criminals, especially those condemned to death. Known as "le pauvre pretre" (the poor priest), he is primarily remembered as the popularizer of the Memorare, over 200,000 copies of which he distributed by leaflets printed in various languages. His father was a distinguished lawyer. Young Bernard was educated at the Jesuit College of Dole and was remarked for his brilliant imagination and wit. Pierre Le Camus, Bishop of Belley, urged him to enter the priesthood, but he declined, saying that he preferred the life of a poor gentleman to that of a poor priest. Shortly afterwards he went to Paris as a protégé of M. de Bellegarde, Governor of Bourgogne. For a while the social life of the capital attracted him. By one account, about this time, he had a dream of his late father warning him against the worldliness to which he was addicted. Gradually, some disappointments and the death of an intimate friend who was killed in a duel, brought about a decided change in his mode of life and led up to his entrance into the priesthood. He was ordained by the Bishop Le Camus and invited to his first Mass the poor of the city, distributing to them all his possessions, and, later, an inheritance of 400,000 livres, or about eighty thousand dollars. Henceforth Bernard devoted himself to the service of the poor, and delighted in the name of "the poor priest". The poor, the sick and the prisoners were his special care; He fed, nursed, consoled, and instructed them with more than motherly tenderness. This life of self-sacrifice seemed rather to increase his personal charms. Wealthy and distinguished persons sought his company, and for honor of entertainment at his modest table contributed abundantly to his charities. His kindly wit never deserted him. When Cardinal Richelieu once pressed upon him the acceptance of some favors he replied that he would be pleased if stronger boards were placed in the tumbril, or cart, on which the condemned were taken to execution. "It is a pity," he said, "that the constant dread of falling through the vehicle should distract our attention from God." Bernard's methods were characterized by some as odd and reprehensible. He continued, however to enjoy the friendship and admiration of saintly priests like Bourdoise, Olier, and St. Vincent de Paul; an ample justification of his character and sacerdotal ministry. In the history of charity, he bears a striking resemblance to St. Francis of Assisi and St. Vincent de Paul, and his beatification has often been urged by the royal court and by the clergy of France. He founded at Paris, for the education of the poor candidates for the priesthood, the seminary of Trent-Trois which still exists. He contributed much to popularize the beautiful prayer to the Blessed Virgin known as the Memorare, sometimes attributed to him but certainly of an earlier date. In addition to this virtually unobtainable contemporary biography, he was the subject of another French biography in 1913 by Commandeur de Broqua, who was the postulator for the cause of Fr. Bernard's canonization. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

The book proceeds in the form of articles and does not use the classic but summary of the annal form, but the autograph dedication of the authors have a time evolution, Roman to modern times. We distinguish a catalog of the bishops of Amiens, the Counts and Governors or Lieutenant of the city. The Treaty on the Houses of Picardie contain valuable information. In addition to the historical, the author added to the end of each part of many poems of his own. Although the focus is mainly put more on the history of the city, there are many sections on churches, the ramparts and the description of the city. "Although the 'book The Morlière is poorly written, but it is useful & necessary, and even rare" notes Lenglet-Dufresnoy. At today's reader, the book will mainly appear messy in its first part, but full lessons on the city. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. Provenance: book plate from the North Library of the Earls of Macclesfield and binder's ticket (Hatton of Manchester) on front paste down. Wing P3028. ESTC Citation No. R40657. Madan, II, 1032. Near Fine First Edition one of the most curious and fascinating books published during the seventeenth century, Potter's treatise on the Number of the Beast. Clergyman, instrument-maker and a founder of the Royal Society, Potter, according to the ODNB, "was interested in computing the number of the beast, connecting 25, the 'appropinque' square root of 666, with various institutions in the Roman Catholic church. His ideas were elaborated in a manuscript which was read in 1637 by Joseph Mede, and commended as a wonderful discovery, the 'happiest that ever yet came into the world.'" Pepys considered it 'mighty ingenious'. It continued to be influential and was reprinted in Worcester as late as 1808. Aubrey's short 'life' of Potter paints a vivid picture of his character and highly inventive mind.

Caption title. Six-line woodcut initial. Light browning. In good to very good condition. Old oval paper ticket with shelfmark 1729 in upper outer corner of first leaf recto, covering last letter of the caption title. (6 ll.). *** First and Only Edition in Portuguese of this rare tract. François de l'Hôpital (1573-1660), comte du Hallier and later Maréchal de France (1643) and duc de Rosnay (1651), was at this time serving as governor of Lorraine, in northeastern France. This account describes how Hallier captured Dieuze, which was incorporated into France. (As part of the Holy Roman Empire it was known as Duss.) Details are given of commanders, troops, and movements. The report mentions Viviers, which was destroyed in 1642 at the order of Richelieu. In 1635, Hallier was named a marshal of France. This was a minor action in the brutal course of the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648), which began as a religious conflict between Catholics and Protestants within the Holy Roman Empire, and evolved into a battle between the Bourbons and Habsburgs. The War significantly affected the outcome of the Portuguese struggle for independence (the Restauração), since it prevented the King of Spain from directing his full military might against Portugal.*** Arouca R233 (citing a copy in the Biblioteca Pública e Archivo Distrital de Évora).         Institution Astronomique de l'usage des globes et spheres.

Joan and Cornelis Blaeu,, Amsterdam, 1642 - Blaeu's user's manual for globes, spheres and sundials 4to. (205 by 160mm), [9] ff. 277pp., numerous diagrams and woodcut illustrations within text, contemporary marginalia to title and a few leaves, some light dampstaining, final leaf with lower part cut off, contemporary vellum, title in manuscript to spine. Scarce first French edition of the great cartographer's handbook to his famous globes and spheres, published by his sons Joan and Cornelis. The master globe-maker, who had recently produced the largest globes in the world to date (68 cm in diameter), authored the Institution Astronomique so that his customers might get the most out of their celestial and terrestrial globes. Blaeu gives a detailed explanation of the various parts of a globe, followed by a series of nearly 150 exercises. By positioning your terrestrial globe as Blaeu directs, it is a simple matter to determine the time in different parts of the world, or to ascertain the length of a day in your hometown of Amsterdam at any given season. There are exercises for both the celestial sphere concerning the ascendancy of certain constellations and the terrestrial globe locating a town in Indonesia given its coordinates or utilising rhumb lines to learn about navigation. The Institution Astronomique is divided into two parts, the first following the improper hypothesis of Ptolemy, the second following the true Copernican hypothesis, similar in arrangement to Galileo's Dialogo. Blaeu explains that he devotes a great many pages to the Ptolemaic system only because it is simpler for neophyte astronomers to grasp; once they have worked through the first set of exercises, they should be well equipped to understand the more complicated Copernican system. Willem Janszoon Blaeu's reputation as the greatest globe maker of his time was largely based on his majestic pair of globes, first issued in 1617 and revised several times in the next 30 years. These globes, luxury objects intended for the libraries of wealthy, educated men, depicted the most current geographical information, thanks to Blaeu's close ties with many Dutch explorers. Blaeu was also an avid astronomer, having studied with Tycho Brahe at the observatory in Hven. The popular Institution Astronomique, first published in Dutch in 1620, appeared in both Latin (1634) and this French translation; it was republished repeatedly over the course of a century.

"Cambrai" (but Venice), 1642.

1642. 12mo. (153) pp., final blank f. Marbled half calf (c. 1780) with giltstamped spine labels and floral endpapers. All edges sprinkled in red. Almost unobtainable first edition of the author's most notorious work: "Prima ediz. stamp. colla falsa data di Cambrai nel 1642" (Libr. Vinciana, p. 21). The "libro più pornografico e più aretinesco del '600" (Q. Marini, P. Aretino nel '600, in: P. Aretino nel cinquecentenario della nascita, p. 486). "The Rhetoric of Whores"), a scandalous anti-Jesuit work, "demonstrates why Pallavicino was the only Italian author of his epoch capable of a coherent vision that integrated satire, skepticism, and naturalistic morality" (Muir, Culture Wars [Cambridge: Harvard, 2007], p. 90). The book is written in the form of a dialogue between an aged prostitute and her naive apprentice. The fifteen lessons of the old whore were based on Cipriano Suarez's "De arte rhetorica", the manual used in Jesuit schools. Muir pointedly notes, "By systematically pursuing the parallels between rhetorical persuasion and erotic seduction, Pallavicino demonstrates how the high art of rhetoric has the same instrumental character as the lowly deceptions of the prostitute." - Some browning throughout. Prettily bound; removed from the Nádasdy library with stamp on title page. Exceedingly rare: no copy in auction records internationally; the earliest recorded copy sold in 1960 (another false "Cambrai" imprint, dated 1644). BL (Italian Books) 647. OCLC 65523066. Cf. Libr.
