BRY JEAN TH?ODORE DE.
Leggere tracce d'uso. Bell'esemplare assolutamente genuino (31,4 x 20,8 cm). "In 1641, twenty-one years after the death of Johann Theodor de Bry, Matthaeus Merian the elder published an amplified version of the ?opus magnus? of his father-in-law ?Florelegium novum?, entitling it ?Florilegium renovatum?... A versatile artist, Merian not only continued the work of his father-in-law as an engraver, he also painted landscapes, portraits and historical scenes..." (Tomasi). COLLADO, Luigi.
Filippo Ghisolfi and Giovanni Battista Bidelli, Milan, 1641. 4to. (275 x 206 mm). 27 folding plates, engraved vignette on title, numerous woodcut illustrations throughout. Short tear to D1 not affecting text, a few instances of underlining in early red pencil to a few leaves, figure 56 browned, otherwise a remarkably fine and fresh copy with excellent plates. 19th-century Italian quarter vellum, paper side. Bookplate of Max Dreger. Very scarce First Italian edition, following the first edition of 1586 in Spanish, of this celebrated treatise on artillery by a Spanish engineer attached to King Philip II’s army in Italy. Collado’s manual is the first work detailing ballistic experiments based on the cannon. This edition is illustrated with 84 woodcuts, many folding, and entirely different from those in the original Spanish edition of 1586. Following progress in the science of arms at the end of the 16th Century, the author revises his work entirely, to such an extent that this present edition can be considered a separate work altogether, providing a complete picture of the state of artillery at the beginning of the 17th Century. The book is divided in seven sections detailing the history of projectiles prior to the invention of powder, the construction of cannons, the mathematics of artillery based mostly on the treatises of Tartaglia, as well as the transport, setting and use of cannons. There is also a chapter on fireworks and dialogues on the practice of artillery. The present expanded edition is much scarcer than the first edition. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

SKENE (Sir John)
London, Printed by E. G[riffin]., 1641. 4to, title (slightly foxed) and following leaf "to the Reader" a little frayed on outer corners but not touching the text, [4], 96, 87-102, 101-172 pp., contemporary calf, covers detached. John Skene's dictionary, published in 1597, was the first Scottish attempt to define the language of the law. In his opening statement to the reader he modestly admitted his errors and ignorance, and complained that his subject was "one mater nought pleasand in itselfe, nor treated be others of before."*****The dictionary is dense and verbosely worded, and with its arcane spellings and inconsistently formed sentences, it makes some definitions nearly unreadable. He defined many words that are now completely obsolete, of Latin or French origin, giving brief etymological information.****Despite these kinds of archaic forms, many definitions still very clearly describe the meanings of important words and concepts. The dictionary did in fact prompt other Scottish writers to improve upon it, as Skene wished. Skene's dictionary was an invaluable contribution to the literature of Scotland and Scottish law. 1641. (2) [Harsdörffer, Georg Philipp]. Germania deplorata, sive relatio, qua pragmatica momenta belli pacisque expenduntur. (3) [Milag, Martin]. Aulaea Romana, contra Peristromata Turcica expansa: sive dissertatio emblematica, concordiae Christianae omen repraesentans. (4) [Anonymous French critic of Cardinal Richelieu]. Gallia deplorata, sive relatio, de luctuoso bello, quod rex Christianissimus contra vicinos populos molitur. 4 editions published together in 1 volume. 4to. With 2 engraved title-plates plus 12 full-page engraved emblematic illustrations, all on integral leaves, each with a small plate nested in a larger plate (7 in the Peristromata with a varying plate black and the same outer plate of a Persian carpet in orange). Gold-tooled light brown calf (ca. 1820?) by Charles Murton in London. Rare first and only Latin editions (probably the first and only early editions in any language) of four closely related polemical pamphlets on European policy toward the Ottoman Empire. The publication was instigated by the prominent Nuremberg poet and jurist Georg Philipp Harsdörffer (1607-58), who somehow found access to the French manuscripts of the pro-Richelieu "Peristromata Turcica" (Turkish carpets), and the anti-Richelieu "Gallia deplorata", translated them into Latin, edited them for publication and added what is believed to be his own anti-French Latin rebuttal of the former, "Germania deplorata". On 26 November 1641 he sent all three to the Calvinist Prince Ludwig of Anhalt-Köthen, founding president of the Fruchtbringende Gesellschaft in Weimar, who found the "Peri … [Click Below for Full Description]

[VOC & WIC].
Alden & Landis 644/139; Asher 191; Knuttel 5119; Landwehr & V.d. Krogt, VOC 62; Sabin 77475. Pamphlet warning of the dangers to the Dutch Republic and its people if they do not unify the East and West India Companies under a single charter. Though in Europe the Dutch allied themselves with Portugal against Spain in the Eighty Years' War, they seized a great deal of Portuguese territory in Brazil and elsewhere in the years 1641 to 1644 and rejected Portuguese demands for its return in June 1644. Portugal, in no position to reconquer its territories, agreed to a truce with the Dutch at Goa in November 1644. Even before the truce the Dutch had reduced their garrison at Recife and recalled the highly regarded and moderate governor-general Johan Maurits of Nassau. On his return to the Netherlands in May 1644 he warned of the dangers of reducing the forces and envisioned the unification of the East and West India Companies to make a stronger force that could seize Spain's colonies in Peru and Mexico. The present pamphlet argues that the unification of the companies would secure the Dutch colonies in Brazil, help them drive Spain out of Peru and Mexico, cut off the source of wealth that was feeding the Spanish war against the Republic in the Low Countries, and provide the Republic with lucrative new trade in the former Spanish colonies. The proposal for unification proved ill-fated, however, and the Dutch not only failed to conquer Peru and Mexico but even lost Brazil a decade later. Slightly browned, a small streak in red pencil on title-page, and some faint water stains. Overall … [Click Below for Full Description]

Robert Wright
Printed by R.B. for Richard Lownds, 1641-01-01. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Modern full leather binding. 4 p. [2] Fine binding and cover. Early page notation on top margin edge. Handsome woodcut plates. Wing 3707. "Wright acted with Laud in the crises of 1640 and the following years. In May 1640 he signed the new canons, which were adopted in convocation. On 27 Oct. 1641 the House of Commons marked its resentment of the action of himself and other bishops by voting their exclusion from parliament. In December Wright joined eleven of the bishops in signing a letter to the king in which they complained of intimidation while on their way to the House of Lords, and protested against the transaction of business in their absence. The House of Commons caused the twelve bishops to be arrested in anticipation of their impeachment on a charge of high treason. Wright, with nine colleagues, was committed to the Tower. He was brought to the bar of the House of Lords in February 1641?????2. He declined to plead, but made an impressive speech. He appealed to the members from his present and past dioceses to judge him by their ?????knowledge of his courses" - DNB Wright's plee: "?????for if I should outlive, I say not my bishopric, but my credit, my grey hairs and many years would be brought with sorrow to the grave.?????" MARQUES (Antoni) ].
En Lerida, por Enrique Castañ, 1641. - in-4. 4ff. 17pp. (i.e.71). 1f. 11). Dialogus de systemate mundi - Systema cosmicum, in quo quatuor dialogis, de duobus maximis mundi systematibus, Ptolemaico & Copernicano. disseritur GALILEI, Galileo [Galilée] A crisp copy lacking portrait, half title and title page else complete in original period full vellum lacking tis red morocco spine label needing to be supplied, an ideal copy for completion or full restoration. B Second latin edition of galileo's most famous work, containing his defence of the Copernican system. This was the treatise that led directly to Galileo's trial for heresy in Rome. Urban VIII identified himself with Simplicio, one of the three participants in the dialogue (along with Salviati and Sagredo), and to avenge this slight he had Galileo arrested while Galileo's protector the Grand Duke of Tuscany was absent from Florence. Simplicio's role in the Dialogo was to be a "filosofo peripatetico" who would cling doggedly to the writings of Aristotle, despite contradictory evidence provided by the learned Salviati (a friend, representing Galileo's Copernican stance) and Sagredo (another of Galileo's friends, an amateur with an informed interest in the new astronomy). Size: 4to [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Clearly intended to subjugate Royalists, this resolution was passed by Parliament during its political and religious power struggle with Charles I. Jeremias Drexel entstammt einer Augsburger Familie von Lutheranern, konvertierte jedoch schon in der Jugend zum katholischen Glauben.
