BELLA, Stefano Della [1610-1664].
c1641. etching. 107 x 250 mm. signed 'DB' in the plate. A very good impression, trimmed just outside plate mark (remains of old tape in upper margin outside plate mark). Provenance: James Barry Anderson (rubberstamp on verso). Only State. From the series 'Divers dessins tant pour la paix que pour la guerre', published by Israël Henriet, Paris. The battle scene extends from left to centre, with cavaliers galloping into the distance on the right. Della Bella was born in Florence in 1610, and studied the art of etching under Remigio Cantagallina, who had also been the master of Callot. While at first the young artist undertook to emulate Callot, he soon developed a style of his own. "No artist has handled the point with more facility and finesse than Della Bella. His execution is admirable, and his touch spirited and picturesque. He designed his subjects with infinite taste, and his plates produce a clear and brilliant effect.". (Bryan's Dictionary Of Painters And Engravers). The present etching dates from Della Bella's enormously productive and successful stay in Paris, where he worked from 1640 to 1649, etching prints on a wide variety of subjects: military, landscape, theatrical, religious, architectural, &c. De Vesme/Massar 267. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

VICARY, Thomas.
Ninth and last edition of the first textbook of anatomy in English, which had grown from 59 leaves in the 1577 edition (no copy is known of the 1548 edition), to almost 300 pages in this, its final form. It is a paraphrase by Vicary of a manuscript in English (now Wellcome MS. 564) compiled by an unknown surgeon in 1392 from works by Henri de Mondeville and Lanfranc of Milan. Despite being out of date, it was a much used text, and not just in the various editions of the present work. When John Caius, who lectured on anatomy and surgery at the Barber Surgeons' Hall, persuaded Thomas Geminus to publish an English version of Vesalius' Epitome (1553), the text chosen was not a translation from Vesalius but this text compiled by Vicary, lifted from the now lost edition of 1548 (Cushing, Vesalius, pp. 124-125). When the Barbers' and Surgeons' Companies were united in 1540, Vicary was the first master. He was surgeon to Henry VIII and had overall charge of St. Bartholomew's Hospital, which was granted its second charter in 1546. He continued as a royal surgeon under Edward VI, Mary and Elizabeth, and died in 1561. Wing W334. Russell 845. J.F. appresso li Bertani, 1641. In-24 gr. (mm. 137x75), p. pergam. coeva, dorso a cordoni con tit. ms., pp. 406, con 12 finissime tavv. inc. in rame all'inizio di ciascun canto. "Edizione originale". … [Click Below for Full Description]

MYDORGE (Claude).
Parisiis, ex Typographia I. Dedin, 1641. in-folio. 2ff. 308pp. "Mydorge's works on conic sections contain hundreds of problems published for the first time, as well as a multitude of ingenious and original methods that later geometers frequently used, usually without citing their source. ( ) A friend of Descartes and an eminent geometer, Mydorge was also well versed in optics. He possessed a lively curiosity and was open to all the new ideas of his age. Like Fermat, he belonged to that elite group of seventeenth-century scientists who pursued science as amateurs but nevertheless made contributions of the greatest importance to one or more fields of knowledge" (D.S.B.). Ad 1: Adams F597; USTC 671401; VD16, F1641; ad 2: Nijhoff & Kronenberg 1401 (1 copy); USTC 437231 (same copy); ad 3: USTC 404733 (1 copy); not in Nijhoff & Kronenberg; UniCat; the main panel stamps not in Fogelmark; Goldschmidt; Oldham; Weale. Three rare editions of humanist works in a contemporary panel-stamped binding, all well produced and the panel stamps finely rendered. Fogelmark (p. 33) calls panel-stamps with gothic animals in foliage "the Flemish panel stamp par préférence". We have not found an exact match in the literature. The impressions of the panels are very crisp and clear, especially that on the lower half of the front board.Ad 1: First Basel edition of an account of the sacerdotium (priesthood) and administration in ancient Rome, written by the Florentine humanist Andrea Domenico Fiocco (d. 1452), assuming the name of a first century Roman writer, Lucius Fenestella. It is followed by a work on the same subject by the Italian humanist Giulio Pomponio Leto (1428-1498), and a list of abbreviations by Valerius Probus. While these works by Fiocco and Leto had been published together since 1510, the present edition introduces a new form that seems to have become the standard followed by others.Ad 2: Rare Antwerp edition of satirical dialogues by the 2nd-century rhetorician Lucianus of Samosata (now in Turkey near the Syrian border), often simply called Lucian in English. They come from his Dialogues of the gods and Dialogues of the dead. The present translation from the Greek, by Erasmus, first appeared at Louvain in 1512. Only one other copy of the present edit … [Click Below for Full Description]

It reflects great credit upon its printer, Stansby, who was an apprentice and then successor to John Windet, and himself a master printer. Such work entitles him to a front rank among the printers of the reign of James I. Jonson is said to have prepared the plays for the press, himself, and one or two matters of editing... certainly appear to show the author's hand. At the end of each play, for instance, is a statement telling when it was first acted, and by whom, whether the king's or the queen's servants. The names of the actors are also given...
