DAILLE (Jean).
London, 1641. Scarce 1641 Tract Calling for the Reform of Laws Concerning Inheritance and Succession N.N. A Treatise Concerning Estates Tayle, And Discents of Inheritance. Written by N.N. And Published by I. Sherman, of Lincolnes Inne: Gen. London: Printed for Iohn Grove, 1641. [ii], 42, [i.e. 43], [1] pp. Lacking first leaf, a blank. Quarto (6-1/2" x 5-1/2"). Stab-stitched pamphlet with untrimmed edges bound into plain later plain wrappers. Light soiling, a few minor stains, moderate edgewear, tiny spark burn to rear wrapper, small tear to front wrapper near foot of spine. Moderate toning to text, light foxing to a few leaves, light soiling to title page. $1,500. * Only edition. The Civil-War inspired several proposals to liberalize and modernize areas of the common law. A fine example of this literature, N.N.'s tract disputes the validity of primogeniture and other "ancient" aspects of inheritance and succession. A contentious piece, it offers a clever argument grounded in classic common-law sources and scripture. OCLC locates 18 copies, 7 in North American law libraries (Harvard, Library of Congress, UC-Berkeley, University of Michigan, University of Virginia, University of Washington, York University-Osgoode Hall). Hendrick HONDIUS (Amsterdam 1597 - 1651)
Incisione in rame, fine coloritura coeva, in buone condizioni. This map of Africa, realized by Hendrik Hondius, is a reissue of Jodocus Hondius' map, without the decorative borders, but with the excudit of Janssonius, on lower right. While the general geography for this map is taken from Willem Blaeu's wall map of 1608 and his 1617 folio map, this example represents a considerable advance in the detail and accuracy of Africa from Hondius' prior maps. Geographical improvements include a more rounded southern Cape, the naming of the Rio de Spiritu Santo and of the CuamaRiver, the insertion of Zimbaos and alteration in the shape of Madagascar. The Kingdom of Monomotapa fills the entire southern tip of Africa. However, the map is also filled with fictitious rivers and mountains and shows the origin of the Nile conforming to the Ptolemaic tradition of twin lakes located below the equator, as is typical of 17th Century cartography. This example comes from a Latin edition; the date on the cartouche can't be read. Copper engraving, fine contemporary colour, in good condition. O. I. Norwich, "Norwich's Maps of Africa", map 34; R. L. Betz "The Mapping of Africa..." (2007), map 58; Schil … [Click Below for Full Description]

An exceedingly rare 1641 first edition of Johannes Buxtorf's 'Jewish Synagogue'. An account of the English Civil War, the first comprehensive work on the topic, written by one of its key players who was subsequently banished. Originally written from 1646 to 1648, the author later combined it with his autobiography and updated it to include events since 1644. David Hume provided a critical but ultimately positive review of the work some fifty years after its initial publication from 1702-1704: "This age affords great materials for history; but did not produce any accomplished historian. Clarendon, however, will always be esteemed an entertaining writer, even independent of our curiosity to know the facts, which he relates. His style is prolix and redundant, and suffocates us by the length of its periods: But … [Click Below for Full Description]

BELLA, Stefano Della [1610-1664]
c1641. Only State. From the series 'Divers dessins tant pour la paix que pour la guerre', published by Israël Henriet, Paris. The print shows on the left a long line of horse-drawn canons extending into the distance, to the extreme right a cavalier making a sign with his right hand, at centre foreground a horse whose rider has fallen to the ground, and at right foreground a dead horse, in the distance a battle on a bridge. Della Bella was born in Florence in 1610, and studied the art of etching under Remigio Cantagallina, who had also been the master of Callot. While at first the young artist undertook to emulate Callot, he soon developed a style of his own. "No artist has handled the point with more facility and finesse than Della Bella. His execution is admirable, and his touch spirited and picturesque. He designed his subjects with infinite taste, and his plates produce a clear and brilliant effect.". (Bryan's Dictionary Of Painters And Engravers). The present etching dates from Della Bella's enormously productive and successful stay in Paris, where he worked from 1640 to 1649, etching prints on a wide variety of subjects: military, landscape, theatrical, religious, architectural, &c. De Vesme/Massar 265. etching. 110 x 252 mm. signed 'DB' in the plate. A very good impression, trimmed just outside plate mark (remains of old tape in upper margin outside plate mark, small pale stain in sky). Provenance: James Barry Anderson (rubberstamp on verso)

[Click Below for Full Description]

MARQUES (Antoni) ].
En Lerida, por Enrique Castañ, 1641. in-4. 4ff. 17pp. (i.e.71). 1f. 11). FABRY, Wilhelm (Fabricius Hildanus).
FIRST COLLECTED EDITION of the most important work of Wilhelm Fabry (1560-1624), sometimes called 'the father of German surgery', although he was actually Swiss by birth. It constitutes the best collection of surgical case records of the seventeenth century, and of the most varied character, illustrated with many fine and curious woodcuts. Fabry's chief influence on surgery was through his correspondence with German physicians and surgeons, and for his urging surgeons to study anatomy. He was assisted in his work by his wife, an esteemed surgeon in her own right, who is credited with suggesting to use of a magnet to make the first extraction of an iron splinter from the eye. A good review of Fabry's surgical work is Ellis Jones, "The life and works of Guilhelmus Fabricius Hildanus (1560-1634)" in Med Hist. 1960 Jul. 4(3): 196-209, who discusses Fabry's work under the headings general surgery including hernia and cancer, obstetrics and gynaecology, oto-rhino-laryngology, orthopaedics, ophthalmology, neurosurgery and genito-urinary surgery. See G&M 5570; this is in effect the first available edition, as Fabry's six(?) Centuriae were published in different places over 35 years and are extremely rare -- for instance, the Wellcome catalogue shows only two of them, Krivatsy four, and VD17 three. The present volume contains five Centuriae, but the sixth one is a mystery; according to Hirsch it was published in London in 1641, but no book by Fabry was published in London with this title or date; Jones gives it as Lyons, 1641, the date and place of the present volume.

Titles within elaborate woodcut borderslarge folding engraved plate ("A most exact and accurat table of the first ten persecutions of the Christian Church") and full-page woodcut of the "poysoning of King John by a Monke" in Volume I, folding woodcut of an execution at Windsor Castle in Volume II, folding woodcut of the "burning of B. Ridley, and Father Latimer at Oxford" in Volume III, numerous woodcut illustrations throughout. Lacking the half-title and the engraved portrait of Foxe in Volume I. Contemporary calf, rebacked; other than some minor browning and waterstaining, an excellent copy with very wide margins. Eighth edition. Actes and monuments, popularly known as Foxe's Book of martyrs, is a history of the Protestant Church and martyrology, first published in 1563. Foxe's account of Protestant sufferings under Catholic supervision was an affirmation of the English Reformation only five years after the death of the Catholic Queen Mary. Foxe clearly intended to establish the Church of England as a continuation of the true Christian church. The work covers early Christian martyrs and a brief history of the medieval church, including the Inquisitions. It then treats the reigns of Henry VIII and Edward VI, when the English Church separated from papal authority and the Book of Common Prayer was first issued. The first printing ended with the persecutions under the reign of Queen Mary. Each subsequent edition included the history and martyrs through that particular printing. For example, the 1583 printing added a sect … [Click Below for Full Description]

Charles I., König von England (1600-1649)
Westminster, 12. II, 1641. Gefaltet.

BOCCHINI Bartolomeo
Venezia,: appresso li Bertani, 1641. Venezia, appresso li Bertani, 1641. In-24 gr. (mm. 137x75), p. pergam. coeva, dorso a cordoni con tit. ms., pp. 406, con 12 finissime tavv. inc. in rame all'inizio di ciascun canto. "Edizione originale". [Click Below for Full Description]
