Saumaise, Claude.
Ex officina Ioannis Maire, 1641. "Walo Messalinus" is a pseudonym for Claude Saumaise (or Salmasius, 1588-1653), a Huguenot classicist and theologian probably best noted for his attacks on the papacy. In this treatise he argues against the Jesuit patrologist Denis Petau that bishops and presbyters were the same in the early church, and thus that presbyterian polity was more primitive. The text of this => sole edition is printed in roman with a goodly amount of Greek, while the title-page is printed in black and red and ornamented with a woodcut vignette of a man digging beneath the motto "Fac et spera." => "Do and hope." Provenance: Charles Spencer, Third Earl of Sunderland, lot 8432 in the Sunderland Library sale (1882).

[CALLIGRAPHY] / PISANI, Giovanni Battista
Genoa: the author, 1641. First edition, and evidently the most complete copy extant, of this calligraphy manuel by a Genoese writing master. Notwithstanding its rich mercantile culture and the educational infrastructure that supported it, few such manuals were published in Genoa. Of five other copies listed by Becker, that described in Marzoli is the most complete, containing 32 plates (including title and six plates by the writing master Scipioni Leoni); this present copy contains an additional nine. Of these 41 plates, nine are signed by Leoni. Three have elaborate engraved borders; the title engraving features a portrait of Pisani flanked by two putti. Pisani’s “First book of modern cursive letters” eschews charts and practice tables in favor of a sequence of brief discourses on the subject of . Oblong 4to. [19.5 x 28 cm overall, 13 x 19 cm to plate mark], [41] ff. Including engraved title and 40 plates of writing samples. Bound in contemporary cartonnage and vellum, title and some pages rather dog-eared. Foxing, light watermarks and fingersoiling, practice work on some leaves.

DESCARTES, Rene
Third French Edition, revised and corrected. 4to. pp. [38], 754. Decorative initials and ornamental head pieces at the beginning of each chapter. Contemporary calf boards (rubbed, corners neatly restored) re-backed including new hand sewn headbands. Original end papers are preserved but worn at the edges. Two names are written in a contemporary hand at the top of the title page (1 name is crossed out). Another name (also crossed out) is inscribed beneath the imprint; a small shelf number is written in the upper right corner. Pages are generally clean with occasional minor soiling and spotting. A narrow piece is missing from the upper margins of pp. 311-320 (4 cm. long x 5-7 mm. deep) - either from rough opening or from a manufacturing error; brown ink spot on fore-edge of text block; leaf T2 marked S2. Leaves remain untrimmed after last re-sewing. Descartes's "Meditations metaphysiques" was first published in Latin as "Meditationes de prima philosophia" (1641). The first French edition (printed in 1647) was produced by the Duc de Luynes under Decartes supervision. De Luynes translated the first part and Claude Clerselier the second. The "Meditations" offer the most detailed presentation of Descartes metaphysical system. [Tchemerzine IV, p.201-202; Brunet I, 609; Querard 758].

COUTINHO, Francisco de Sousa.
Lisbon, Jorge Rodriguez, 1641. - 4°, mid-twentieth-century quarter sheep over marbled boards (rubbed, defective at foot of spine), spine gilt with raised bands in six compartments, red leather lettering piece, gilt letter, marbled endpapers, edges rouged. In very good condition. Engraved armorial bookplate of [António Pereira da Nóbrega de] Souza da Camara (1840-1918). [6 ll.]. *** First Edition in Portuguese? D. Duarte de Bragança (Vila Viçosa 1605-Milan 1649), brother of D. João IV, was in the service of the Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand III when Portugal revolted against the Spanish Hapsburgs and his brother was acclaimed king. The present pamphlet is part of the diplomatic efforts to obtain D. Duarte's release. While unsuccessful (he was moved from prison to prison on several occasions and finally sold to the Spaniards, dying in Milan) his years of mistreatment gained much sympathy for the cause of Portuguese independence. There appears to be a different translation, published by António Alvares, also in 1641. We have been unable to establish any priority. @Provenance: The Souza da Camara library was sold at auction in Lisbon, 1966, with Arnaldo Henriques de Oliveira as expert.
