Foxe, John, & Samuel Foxe.
London: Printed for the Company of Stationers, 1641. Large folio. 3 vols. I: Engr. frontis. port., [74] ff., 1033 [i.e. 1023], [1] p., [2] ff. of plates (one large, engr. folding). II: [19] ff., 788 [i.e., 786] pp., [1] f. (fold. plate). III: [2] ff., 1030 [i.e., 1020] pp., [7] ff., 106 [i.e., 108] pp., [48] ff., [2] ff. of plates. (Without the half-titles). English printing of the 1640s was very much at a nadir as to quality of illustration and presentation of text on the page: Remarkably, this multi-volume, large-format edition of Foxe's "Book of Martyrs" (as it is generally known) offers very good levels of illustration, composition, and imposition of type. It is printed in double-column format on high quality paper, in mostly gothic type (i.e., "black letter") with some roman and italic. The woodcut illustrations are at once charmingly naive and arresting in both their simplicity and their ability to convey the artists' intentions, with a few of the => 142 in-text woodcuts or initials looking => quite remarkably modern. There are 37 in-text woodcuts, one very large => historiated woodcut initial showing Elizabeth splendidly enthroned, one woodcut plate, and one => huge engraved folding plate showing a grand variety of martyrdoms in vol. I; 29 in-text woodcuts and two woodcut plates (one folding) in vol. II; and 76 in-text woodcuts and two woodcut plates in vol. III. The engraved plate in vol. I is by George Glover and he has signed one of the large woodcuts as well; at least one other woodcuts is signed by another artist, John Droeshout.    => This was clearly a luxury … [Click Below for Full Description]

Martel, Jerónimo Gerónimo
Diego Dormer, Zaragoza 1641 - 10 hojas, incluida portada. Size: 4ºmenor [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Holland 18th century, 1641. Watercolour on Dutch laid paper, excellent condition, some mild browning. From a "Tulip Book", in the manner of Anthony Claesz who produced his own "Tulip Book" in c.1641. These florilegia were commissioned to illustrate the differences between varieties of tulip bulb which at the time demanded such high prices. The beauty of these works ensured that their images would be copied for decades to come by amateur painters and gardeners alike. Claesz was a Dutch master in his own right, with several highly accomplished works to his name. However, as with most of the great Dutch masters of this period, they happily supplemented their income by illustrating such books. It also allowed them to study in detail subjects that would later be incorporated in their great flower pieces. Provenance: Private Dutch collection.

Written in 1529 by a philosopher at the top of his fame, the two books are a direct confrontation with Neoplatonism then current Nifo attack that frankly using the two concepts of love and beauty, it definitely ranks in the banner of desire. The book was originally dedicated to beautiful Giovanna d'Aragona (1502-1577), godson of King Ferdinand of Naples, who Nifo saw the ideal of human beauty, able to stir all human and therefore love desires, but beyond this ideal Nifo defines what is beautiful, for what we love, revolutionary design at the time of love and beauty were deified. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. First edition of this double biography and character assessment of two eminent political figures in England at the beginning of the 17th century. The first had been the major player in the Essex Rebellion, which had begun with a staging of Richard II at the Globe Theatre and ended with the Earl of Essex's beheading in the Tower. The Duke of Buckingham did not rebel against a monarch, he was the favourite (some say lover) of James I and was a member of Francis Bacon's intellectual circle, before being stabbed to death by a critic of his military leadership. The author Wotton had been, together with Francis Bacon (whose writings he published), an initial supporter of the Essex Rebellion. Sir Henry Wotton was an English politician, ambassador on various missions in Europe, writer and later Provost of Eton. He announces at the beginning 'Amongst those Historicall Imployments, whereunto I have devoted my later yeares, (for I read, that old men live more by me … [Click Below for Full Description]

BEHR, Johann von der.
Cat. KITLV, p.474; Cat. NHSM I, p. 174; Van Gelder, Het Oost-Indisch avontuur, p. 289; Landwehr, VOC, 309; VD17, 3:307812K. First (and only early) edition of a diary of a nine-year voyage to the East Indies, the Malabar coast in India, Persia and Ceylon, made as a soldier in a merchant ship under the command of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) in the years 1641 to 1650. It gives detailed information about the ships, captains and others, providing an intimate account of life onboard a VOC ship as well as the peoples in the exotic lands visited, describing food, drink (including rice wine), tobacco, flora and fauna. The illustrations include a folding view of Batavia (now Jakarta, Indonesia), views of Goa, Isle St Helena and other sites, a cinnamon tree, flying fish, numerous ships and much more. They set off on 21 January 1644 and continued from Batavia under Johan Maetsuycker to Goa, then to Ceylon and Persia and back to the Netherlands in 1650. While some information appears to have been taken from published sources, much of the information is clearly an eye-witness account. Bound for Ernst Friedrich von Döring. Somewhat browned, but otherwise in very good condition and with good margins. The outside corner of 1 leaf is torn off with no loss of text. The front hinge is cracked and there is minor damage to the spine, but the binding is also good. A fascinating account, with many personal details, of a soldier's nine-year voyage with the VOC to the East Indies, India, Persia and Ceylon.

Bacon, Francis
London: Pr. by the Assignes of John More, 1641. 4to (20 cm, 7.9"). [4], 35, [1] pp. First edition: His Majesty's Solicitor General (served 1606 to 1613) sets forth the law on treason, including sections on felony, abjuration and exile, and heresy. The title-page bears More's "Deus providebit" publisher's device, and the text is decorated with two headpieces and one decorative capital. The work, however, was not published until the early days of the English Civil Wars, when its reasonings were most apt. Evidence of readership: The section on "Cases of Felony" is => annotated in an early and rather challenging hand, on three pages. ESTC R16590; Gibson, Bacon, 198; Pforzheimer 25.3; Wing (rev. ed.) B272. Contemporary tan calf framed in triple blind fillets, later rebacked with brown sheep, spine with gilt-stamped leather title-label; sides and spine with small scuffs, edges and extremities worn. Front pastedown with London bookseller's ticket, slightly offset onto free endpaper. Title-page darkened and stained, with two early inked notations; text generally age-toned and waterstained though not weakened. Variable worming from p. 14 on, in some cases touching letters without generally obscuring sense; upper edges of several leaves ragged and chipped, some lower edges untrimmed. => A classic.
