(salarium e fisco accepit, Suetonius, Vesp. 17-19) His most celebrated work is the 'Institutio Oratoriae', in 12 books. It 'covers the complete training of the orator from the earliest preparation by the grammarian to his most mature aspirations for oratorical preeminence'. (The Classical Tradition, Cambr. Mass., 2010, p. 827) The ideal was a public speaker who was skilled not only in eloquence, but who was also a good man. This is summarized in the famous maxim that an orator is a 'vir bonus dicendi peritus'. Quintilian still makes all that has been written on education from Rousseau to the latest pseudo-psychologist rather worthless. (H.J. Rose, A handbook of Latin literature, London, 1967, p. 399) 'Book 1 discusses childhood education. (...) In book 2 the boy enters the school of rheto … [Click Below for Full Description]

"An exploration of the long-term development of an Irish region, South Munster, from the eve of the 1641 rising to the era of Catholic Emancipation from one of Ireland's best known scholars of the period. The study examines both social and economic development and cultural and political change in the region across six generations. This ground-breaking study traces the fortunes of one of Ireland's wealthiest regions between 1630 and 1830. South Munster's strengths were its agricultural resources and its prime Atlantic location, and the rise of the city of Cork from insignificance to international importance was critical in the exploitation of this wealth as well as being symbolic of a new commercial order.

Angeloni, Francesco.
Rome, Andrea Fei, 1641. - Folio (222 x 322 mm). (22), 396 pp. Engraved title-page by Lanfranchi, engraved portrait of the author, and 72 engraved illustrations in the text (22 full-page). Contemporary full vellum. Red mottled edges. First edition of this survey of Roman coins from Julius Caesar to Constantine the Great. - Angeloni (1559-1652), a renowned antiquarian, was secretary to Cardinal Ippolito Aldobrandini, and a friend of Bellori, Domenichino and Poussin. "John Evelyn visited Angeloni in November 1644 as well as the following year and wrote in his diary that Angeloni's collection of coins was one of the most impressive in Europe" (Strandberg). - Occasional slight browning and waterstaining. Leaf Aaa1 torn and repaired with slight loss of text. Binding somewhat stained; upper joint split at foot. From the collection of Patricia Milne-Henderson, wife of the art historian Michael Jaff

The Duke of Buckingham did not rebel against a monarch, he was the favourite (some say lover) of James I and was a member of Francis Bacon's intellectual circle, before being stabbed to death by a critic of his military leadership. The author Wotton had been, together with Francis Bacon (whose writings he published), an initial supporter of the Essex Rebellion. Sir Henry Wotton was an English politician, ambassador on various missions in Europe, writer and later Provost of Eton. He announces at the beginning 'Amongst those Historicall Imployments, whereunto I have devoted my later yeares, (for I read, that old men live more by me … [Click Below for Full Description]

Stefano della Bella (1610-1664).
No date or place stated, but published with Pierre Mariette in Paris, 1641. The complete animal series of 24 etchings (including the title), reversibly mounted under passepartout in 4 rows of 6 etchings. Each measuring app. 8.2 x 10.4 cm. A very few marginal and inobtrusive wears or restorations, but a very fine set. De Vesme 690-713. Second state (of three), before the erasion of the publisher’s name. – The animals of this series were mostly engraved after individuals kept in the menageries of the Medicis in Florence, Italy and those of the King of France in Paris, to both of which della Bella had access during his career. While menageries at his time still were mixtures of hunting compounds for the nobility and what one could call an early form of zoological gardens, it contained illustrations of exotic animals and local species, including wild and domesticated species, game as well as companion animals. All, though, are mammals with the sole exception of a pair of eagles. Until just recently the elephant i this series had been considered to be a portrait of the famous individual ‘Hansken’, an Indian elephant from Ceylon, born in 1630 and brought to Europe in 1633. Hansken toured Central Europe for almost two decades and became the most popular individual elephant of all times (his name being a diminutive version of the dutch name ‘Hans’). Hansken’s skeleton was conserved and is today part of the exhibition of the Museum La Specola in Florence. However, recent stduies (M. Roscam Abbing, 2016) argue, that the elephant in della Bella’s suite most likely is that one which oc … [Click Below for Full Description]
