Erasmus [Desiderius Erasmus Roterodamus / Erasmus of Rotterdam].
LLugduni Batavorum (Leiden), Ex Officina Jhannes Maire 1641 - Duodez. 410 pages plus Index. Hardcover / Original Vellum. Very good condition with only minor signs of external wear. Desiderius Erasmus Roterodamus (28 October 1466 – 12 July 1536), known as Erasmus or Erasmus of Rotterdam, was a Dutch/Netherlandish Renaissance humanist, Catholic priest, social critic, teacher, and theologian. Erasmus was a classical scholar and wrote in a pure Latin style. Among humanists he enjoyed the sobriquet "Prince of the Humanists", and has been called "the crowning glory of the Christian humanists". Using humanist techniques for working on texts, he prepared important new Latin and Greek editions of the New Testament, which raised questions that would be influential in the Protestant Reformation and Catholic Counter-Reformation. He also wrote On Free Will, The Praise of Folly, Handbook of a Christian Knight, On Civility in Children, Copia: Foundations of the Abundant Style, Julius Exclusus, and many other works. Erasmus lived against the backdrop of the growing European religious Reformation, but while he was critical of the abuses within the Catholic Church and called for reform, he kept his distance from Luther and Melanchthon and continued to recognise the authority of the pope, emphasizing a middle way with a deep respect for traditional faith, piety and grace, rejecting Luther's emphasis on faith alone. Erasmus remained a member of the Roman Catholic Church all his life, remaining committed to reforming the Church and its clerics' abuses from within. He also held to the Catho … [Click Below for Full Description]

This book led to the most famous incidents in his life, but the timing was accidental. <br> About 1624 Prynne had begun a book against stage-plays; on 31 May 1630 he obtained a license to print it, and about November 1632 it was published. A passage reflecting on the character of female actors in general was construed as an aspersion on the queen; passages which attacked the spectators of plays and magistrates who failed to suppr … [Click Below for Full Description]

Holles, Denzil
[s.n.], 1641. Fine modern leather binding, with gold lettering.[2], 10 p. Denzil Holles (1599?????1680) was a noted English parliamentarian during the reign of Charles I and the English Civil War. Holles was one of 5 arrested by King Charles for his actions halting the adjournment of Parliament in 1629. "On 2 March 1629, when, contrary to the will of the House of Commons, the speaker pleaded the king's order to adjourn it, and sought to leave the chair, Holles and another member kept him in it by force. ?????God's wounds!????? swore Holles, ?????you shall sit till we please to rise.????? At the end of the same stormy sitting it was Holles who recited and put to the house Eliot's three resolutions against innovation in religion and arbitrary taxation (Gardiner, History of England, vii. 68, 75; Old Parliamentary History, viii. 332, 354, 361)." - DNB This arrest hastened the outbreak of the English Civil War. Holles was subsequently an important figure during the Long Parliament. His Protestation of 1641 (printed in this pamphlet) represented an attempt to advert the the Civil War by forcing all males over 18 to swear and oath renouncing "Popery" i.e. Catholicism or be banned from church or state service. Holles gives the reason for this step and related arguments. An important document from the English Civil war detailing the development of Parliamentary power. Wing, H2479.
