Moses Pitt ca 1680. Coloured copper engraving, image: 54 x 46 cm.
1639. Map shows the flow of the Northern Dvina River from Yug River and Sukhona River to the White Sea in Russia. Published by a british bookseller Moses Pitt (c. 1639-1697). Pitt bought plates from Johannes Janssonius and added minor changes and square grids to the maps. With a support of the Royal Society he was planning on publishing an elaborate Atlas in twelve volumes, but because of high costs of printing only four volumes were published. As a result of the project Pitt declared bankrupt and was sent to prison for seven years. Repaired short tear in the lower part of the fold, else a fine copy.

First edition. The wealth of information included in this short tract, although brief, is remarkable, with news mainly on the Mindanao and Jolo islands, their inhabitants (making mention of the privateering activities held by the Jolo islands natives), defences, nature and distances to other islands, an Embassy from Corralat (a present was brought, considered to be small and denied) and another from Cachil Monacay and belligerent actions taken against the region. It certainly constitutes one of the earliest available sources of information on the region. Exceedingly rare, not a single copy sold at auction (according to AE); according to CCPBE (Catálogo colectivo del patrimonio bibliográfico Español) there is no copy in Spain and according to Tavera -one of the foremost bibliographers on the Philippines- only a copy in the British Library could be found. Provenance: offered in 1922 by Maggs, lot 220. Tavera, 691.

Johannes JANSSONIUS (1588-1664)
"A beautiful map that is one of the most interesting maps of the American southeast. The map is based upon the Jodocus Hondius' map of the same area-Jansson was Hondius' son-in-law-with some updating. This shows the influence of the Hondius map, and the way his map led to an extensive dissemination of both its correct information and its errors. Hondius's map was a combination of information from two sixteenth century maps, one of the Carolinas, and one of the northern Florida/Georgia region. These were combined, and in the process many errors were introduced, not the least of which was the straightening out of the St. John's River so that it flowed from an non-existent lake located to the northwest of the mouth of the river. This lake, which would become Lake Apalachy, appeared on this and other maps well into the eighteenth century. Jansson's map is updated from the Hondius version, including coats-of- … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

Collijn sp. 528f. Almqvist s. 115. [Click Below for Full Description]

MERIAN, Matthaus
Piuro, Italy: MERIAN, Mattheus, 1639. very good. Copper engraving. Image measures 11 1/4" x 6 3/4" These two engravings provide two views of the Italian town of Piuro, in Lombardy, before and after the 1618 collapse of a nearby mountain. The mountain had been previously heavily mined and tunneled, and it is likely this instability that caused it to collapse in the wake of heavy rainstorms, burying the town. Of the 16 important sites in the town which appear in the upper map, listed in a key in the upper right, only 5 remain in the lower version, the rest replaced by large expanses of water and rock. The text between the two prints reads, "Eigentlich Vorbildung des schönen Fleckens Plues, und wie derselbe nach seinem schröcklichen Untergang beschaffen." The print was included in "Itinerarium Italiae Nova Antiqua..." by Martin Zeiller, which Merian published in 1640. The two views have been assembled on a single lining and are in very good condition, other than some wear and paper deterioration at the corners. The Swiss-born Matthäus Merian (1593-1650) studied in Zurich and Paris before moving to Frankfurt am Main, where he worked as an engraver, etcher and publisher. Most well-known for his series of "Topographies," he also produced a variety of other prints of industry as well as nature.

AQUINAS, Thomas
1639 Summa Theologica Thomas Aquinas Medieval Philosophy Catholic Theology 2v SET “The truth can be perceived only through thinking” Thomas Aquinas, Summa Theologica A rare 17th-century printing of the famous “Summa Theologica” by Thomas Aquinas. This work is considered Aquinas’ "most perfect work, the fruit of his mature years, in which the thought of his whole life is condensed". (Perrier, 149). ‘Summa’ makes references to many great thinkers and philosophers who were important during Aquinas’s time - these include Paul the Apostle, Aristotle, Peter Lombard, Cicero, and Saint Augustine. ‘Summa’ makes many strong arguments about theology and lawful living including: • Theology is the source of divine knowledge and transcends human reason • The existence of God, God is not a metaphor • Unbelief is the worst of all sins; original sin is unavoidable • Collecting interest on loans is unlawful • Just price theory – selling something for more/less of its value is unlawful • Being a monk is greater than being married • Martyrs, teachers, and virgins receive special crowns in heaven A fine two volume set. Both volumes printed in 1639. Item number: #611 Price: $599 AQUINAS, Thomas Svmma totivs theologiæ S. Thomæ Aqvinatis, doctoris angelici, ordinis Prædicat Col. Alsop printed a corrected edition in 1624 with a dedication to More's great-grandson, Cresacre More, which is reprinted here. "It was written, like Gulliver's Travels, as a tract for the times, to rub in the lesson of Erasmus; it inveighs against the new statesmanship of all-powerful autocracy and the new economics of large enclosures and the destruction of the old common-field agriculture, just as it pleads for religious tolerance and universal education . More had all Swift's gift for utterly convincing romance: the beginning, when Rafael Hythlodaye recounts his voyages, has a vividness which draws the reader on into the p … [Click Below for Full Description]
