GALILEI, Galileo.
Strasbourg; Leiden: Elzevier; Elzevier, 1636; 1638. First edition. First edition of a great Galilean rarity, the Nov-Antiqua or 'Letter to Christina', with the first edition of his most important work, the Discorsi, together in a magnificent contemporary armorial binding executed for the Archbishop of Reims. The Nov-Antiqua is a "superb manifesto of the freedom of thought" (Koestler, p. 436). "Its purpose was to silence all theological objections to Copernicus. Its result was the precise opposite: it became the principal cause of the prohibition of Copernicus, and of Galileo's downfall ... As a work of polemical literature, the Letter is a masterpiece" (ibid., pp. 434). "The edition was small and the book was rigorously suppressed in Catholic countries" (Drake, Discoveries and Opinions of Galileo, p. 171). This is the first printing of Galileo's radical letter to Christina of Lorraine, the mother of his Florentine patron Cosimo II de' Medici, who had posed a typical court question: how the truths of science and the Bible were to be reconciled when they were in apparent contradiction. Originally written in 1615 and circulated in manuscript, Galileo upholds the primacy of science and argues for its freedom from theological interference. "Galileo argued that neither the Bible nor nature could speak falsely and that the investigation of nature was the province of the scientist, while the reconciliation of scientific facts with the language of the Bible was that of the theologian" (Stillman Drake in DSB). The work concludes with an unequivocal argument for the truth of the Coper … [Click Below for Full Description]

Por Diego Dormer en la Freneria Vieja, En Çaragoça [Zaragoza], 1638. Title page with woodcut illustration of a warship. First edition. In later marbled paper. [4] p. A bibliographically unrecorded, contemporary Spanish report on the Siege of Fuenterrabía of 1638. In 1638 June, as part of the operations of the Thirty Years' War and the Franco-Spanish War, the invading French army besieged the coastal Basque city of Hondarribia (Fuenterrabía) for two months. Despite the devastating French attacks which left only some three-hundred survivors, the nearly destroyed city never surrendered. Eventually, on 7 September, the Spanish army relieved the city and defeated the French force. Since then, the anniversary of the Spanish victory is celebrated annually on 8 September. Not in IB. We could trace only one copy in institutional holdings in Austria (ÖN). A light water stain at the upper right margin and light foxing throughout. Last two leaves with small damage at the lower corners with no effect on the text. Otherwise in fine condition. [Attributes: First Edition]

GALILEI, Galileo.
Leiden: Elzevier, 1638. First edition. First edition, a fine copy in untouched contemporary vellum, of Galileo's last and most important work, "the first modern textbook of physics, a foundation stone in the science of mechanics" (Grolier/Horblit); the 'two new sciences' were the engineering science of strength of materials and the mathematical science of kinematics. Galileo presented the work in dialogue form, with the same interlocutors Salviati, Sagredo and Simplicio, as those of the condemned Dialogo. The results of his trial before the Inquisition for his support of heliocentrism had left Galileo "so crushed that his life had been feared for" (DSB), and it was only at the urgings of his friend and supporter the Archbishop of Siena, Ascanio Piccolomini, that Galileo set about pulling together his life's work in physics. "Unable to publish this treatise on mechanics in his own country because of the ban placed on his books by the Inquisition, he published it in Leyden. Considered the first modern textbook in physics, in it Galileo pressed forward the experimental and mathematical methods in the analysis of problems in mechanics and dynamics. The Aristotelian concept of motion was replaced by a new one of inertia and general principles were sought and found in the motion of falling bodies, projectiles and in the pendulum. He rolled balls down an inclined plane and thereby verified their uniformly accelerated motion, acquiring equal increments of velocity in equal increments of time. The concept of mass was implied by Galileo's conviction that in a vacuum all bodies would … [Click Below for Full Description]

Paris. Bible. English. Authorized (i.e., "King James" version). 1638.
Printed by Tho. Buck and Roger Daniel, printers to the University of Cambridge, 1638. [bound with] Bible. Psalms. English. Sternhold and Hopkins. The vvhole book of Psalmes, collected into English metre, by Th. Sternhold, Iohn Hopkins, and others ... [Cambridge]: Printed by Thomas Buck and Roger Daniel, printers to the Vniversitie of Cambridge, 1638. Royal folio. [4] ff., 90 pp., [5] ff. "In this edition . . . the work of correction begun in the folio Cambridge Bible of 1629 was carried further. The revisers took special pains to render uniform the use of italics; and they also introduced a certain number of new readings. . . . This remained the standard text until the publication of Dr. Paris's Cambridge edition of 1762" (Darlow and Moule). A further notable fact of this edition is that it is here for the first time that the reading in Acts 6:3 is given as "whom ye may appoint" rather than "whom we may appoint." Darlow and Moule note that "[t]his alteration has often been ascribed to the Puritans, and was reputed to have cost Cromwell a bribe of £1000; yet here it is found as early as 1638, in a Bible prepared under the royal sanction." Both the Bible and the Psalter are printed in roman in double-column format. The main title-page is engraved and signed by William Marshall (active 1617-50), while those of the New Testament and the Psalter are letterpress. Adorning the text are woodcut head- and tail-pieces and a variety of woodcut initials, including historiated ones and several factotums. This copy does not include the Apocrapha. 1638. Conservation-Restoration Accomplished on this Maitre Doreur binding is Astonishing! Head and tail reconstructions were required and accomplished to perfection! Upper and Lower sections of back board were also addressed wonderfully. Please see all photos. Will supply more photos to serious interested buyers. This Bible is lacking the General and New Testament titles and is dated by the actual death of the Binder himself. This is one of his last bindings, as his death occured most likely in 1638. So although this is not among his best works accomplished in his prime, it certainly shows his fine ability even near the time of his passing. Text does indicate being complete otherwise, there are two sections pulled in the center of the text block but these are still holding. In the photos i have listed the "Before" next to the "After" of the same section restored. XVIIth century BIBLE CLEMENTINE AMAZING FULL MOROCCO BINDING of Master Binder Maitre Doreur BIBLE CLEMENTINE. HOLY BIBLE IN LATIN including the Apocrypha Marco Antonio Colonna, Ottaviano Vetri Barbiani c.1638, BIBLIA SACRA Vulgatae Editionis Sixti V. Pont. Max. Please see condition description above and all photos to closely examine the conservation-restoration of this fine Latin Bible being offered for sale. http://www.cyclopaedia.org/1623/maitre3.html Possibly nearly the last Maitre Doreur binding Scarce! This is likely the Only Opportunity to purchase an original Maitre Doreur bound Bible. Good Luck.
