ERPENIUS, Thomas.
[12], 172, “282” [= 284] pp.Third edition, expanded and edited by Jacobus Golius, of Erpenius's classic Arabic grammar. The present edition is augmented with an Arabic chrestomathy that Fabricius had published in 1638. Erpenius (1584-1624) revolutionized Arabic scholarship in Europe and made the Netherlands the most important European centre of Arabic studies before he died of the plague in 1624. His grammar remained the standard work in the field for two centuries. With the owner's inscription on a free endleaf, and a meticulously lettered note on p. 42 of the Lockman fabels. Some small defects, but otherwise in very good condition, with only a small marginal tear repaired and an occasional minor and mostly marginal spot or stain. Binding with a restoration at the head and foot of the spine but otherwise good, with slight wear at the hinges and extremities. The best edition of a classic Arabic grammar.l Schnurrer 81 & 220; Smitskamp, Philologia orientalis 72; STCN (7 copies).

Drenthe - Johannes Janssonius, 1638
1638. Drentia Comitatus. [Click Below for Full Description]

DAVENANT, W[illiam]
London: John Haviland for Thomas Walkly, 1638. First edition. 12mo. Bound in eighteenth century speckled calf with blind double ruled borders to boards, raised bands to spine with titles in gilt. Superficial repair to the front joint. A small piece clipped from the corner of the front endpaper and very tip of the corner of the first four leaves. Closely trimmed at head occasionally shaving the pagination. Wanting final blank, as usual. Overall, a very good, well preserved copy. Woodcut device to title page and woodcut head- and tailpiece devices throughout. Madagascar is Sir William Davenant's first collection of poetry and coincides with his appointment as Poet Laureate. The title poem is an epic and rather romanticised account of Prince Rupert's attempt to colonise the island. Other poems include the ode 'In Remembrance of Master William Shakespeare', supposedly written in 1618 two years after Shakespeare's death and first published here. Davenant is thought to be the godson of Shakespeare, and following the Civil War he secured a patent to establish a new theatrical company, the Duke's Company. He chiefly used this to put on his adaptations of Shakespeare's play, who had by this point fallen into obscurity. In doing so he single-handedly resurrected a popular following for his plays in Restoration London. This book is extremely uncommon in commerce, with only two other copies sold at auction in the last sixty years. The work is said to have been initiated by Otto Heurnius (1577-1652), a Dutch physician who became professor of medicine at the University of Leiden. It lists simple medicines ("simplicia") and compound medicines ("composita"), together with some brief comments on the ingredients and the preparations of the medicines. "Remedies for the patients in the Caecilia Hospital [Leiden] were in accordance with the prescriptions in this poor-pharmacopoeia" (Beukers).Very slightly browned, with minor thumbing on the first and last page and a few small spots. Otherwise in very good condition. H. Beukers (ed.), Clinical teaching, past and present XXI, p. 143; Daems & Vandewiele, p. 147; STCN (1 copy); Worldcat (3 copies).

STENO, Nicolaus (Niels STENSEN).
1638. [1 blank], [1], 221, [11]; [1], [1 blank], 148, [3], [1 blank] pp.Ad 1: Second edition, in the original Latin, of a famous and foundational study of the physiology and structure of muscles and the formation of fossils, by the world-renowned Nicolas Steno or Niels Stensen (1638-1686). Stensen was a pupil of the important Danish physician Bartolin in Copenhagen and is widely considered as the founder of modern geology and young-earth creationism. He has been recognized as having made some of the first truly great discoveries in geology. Living in Florence in the service of the Grand Duke of Tuscany, he first published his findings in his Elementorum myologiae specimen in Florence in 1667, showing how the teeth of a shark came to be mineralized. This was an enormous contribution to the study of fossils. Using the Bible framework Stensen developed one of the earliest directional geological accounts on the history of earth and life.Ad 2: First edition of an important treatise on the anatomy of the uterus by Nicolaas Hoboken (Utrecht 1632 - ca. 1675) with his engraved portrait. He dedicated his work to the famous Dutch physician Nicolaas Tulp (the professor in Rembrandt’s "Anatomy lesson"). The text of the treatise appears on pp. 12-48, followed by the explanations on pp. 49-66 of the plates bound at the end of the book. The Specilegium epistolarum, rem potissimum generatoriam referentium appears on pp. 67-219, followed by the contents, index and errata. In this convolute the work by Hoboken (ad 2) is bound before Steno's Elementorum myologiae specimen (ad 1).
