1638. with transcription, suspending all sequestration of Montagu's estates (which included Cowdray Park and Battle Abbey), following his petition "shewing, that hee hath for severall yeares last past (upon pretence of his being a Popish Recusant) groaned under the heavy pressure of a sequestration of more than two third parts of his Estate ... although he was never convicted of recusancy", until "the meritts of his cause bee fully heard, and determined by due course of law", all those involved "to yeald their Obedience hereunto as they will answere the contrary to this House", 1 side folio and conjugate leaf with short title, House of Lords, 13th June Written within a few weeks of Charles II's Restoration. The petitioner's great-grandparents, the 1st Viscount and his wife, were staunch Roman Catholics and close to Queen Mary. Guy Fawkes served for a while in the 1st Viscount's household, and the petitioner's father, the 2nd Viscount, was in the Tower for over a year for alleged complicity in the Plot. John Browne, first appointed in 1638, was in fact a strong Parliamentarian, and served as clerk in the Lords until the house's abolition in March 1649. He was, nevertheless, re-instated at the Restoration and remained in this important post until his death.

Willem Janszoon BLAEU (Uitgeest 1571- Amsterdam 1638)
General map of the West Indies extending from Virginia to the mouth of the Orinoco, and destined to be copied in various shapes by many other publishers. Title cartouche top left incorporates various local fauna. This is a derivative of Hessel Gerritsz' chart of c. 1631. The nomenclature of the North American part is virtually identical, the only notable addition being the naming of Virginia. It reflects the firsthand knowledge of Gerritsz during his voyage to South America and the West Indies undertaken in 1628.

Giovanni BOCCACCIO
1638. [Italian Literature] ~ BOCCACCIO, Giovanni Il decameron Di Messer giovanni boccacci cittadin fiorentino.. In Venetia [i.e. Venice]. Appresso Pietro Mari Bertano, 1638. Quarto. [16], 472 [i.e. 480]pp. Contemporary calf, contrasting red morocco lettering-piece, gilt. Extremities heavily worn, surface loss to spine and boards, splitting to joints. Inked inscription of Joannis Conradi Wolfen to foot of title-page, occasional light spotting. Giovanni Boccaccio (1313-1375), leading Italian vernacular author of both prose and poetry. The Decameron, his greatest work, contains 100 novellas of medieval allegory with many concerning love in all its forms, from erotic through romantic to plainly tragic. This edition, first printed in 1582, was done by Italian philologist Lionardo Salviati (1539-1589) at the behest of the Catholic Church to bring Boccaccio's writings into line with contemporary Christian morality acceptable to the Inquisition, the work having been placed on the Index Librorum Prohibitorum in 1559 for it's anticlerical content. ~ About Antiquates We're based in the heart of the Dorset countryside, with an antiquarian bookshop in Wareham, housed within a beautiful Grade II Listed Georgian Building, we also travel far and wide to buy, sell and advise on rare books. Vasconi, Filippo (Rome 1688 - 1730 Rome):
Rome 18th century, 1638. Sheet: 284 x 207 mm; pen, brown ink and watercolor; verso ascribed to Vasconi in a contemporary German hand: „Ein Camin von H. Vasconi inventirt u. (beschert?)." Signed in lower right: F.V.F. (Filippo Vasconi fecit) Filippo Vasconi was an Italian architect and engraver. He was a nephew of Carlo Fontana (1638-1714). His father was agent of Grand Duke Cosimo III de 'Medici, while his mother was the daughter of Carlo Fontana and sister of Francesco Fontana (1668-1708). In 1706, he met the architect and set designer Filippo Juvarra (1678-1736), both combined a longlife friendship. Vasconi, Domenico Gregorini (1692-1777), Pietro Passalacqua (1690-1748, nephew of Juvarra) and the painter Placido Romoli (1690-1750) formed a group of artists sponsored by Cardinal Ottoboni and admitted to the prestigious Pontifical Academy of the Virtuosi al Pantheon. Vasconi is mostly known for his architectural engravings as well as his engravings after drawings and paintings by other artists. In later years his activity specialized more and more towards the representation of machines and other equipment used in parties and celebrations, and the depiction of festivals. Besides the two designs in our inventory, we were able to locate only one other drawing which can be attributed without doubt to Vasconi. It is the first draft in an album by Filippo Juvarra, today in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The present drawing is most likely the only known signed drawing by Filippo Vasconi. - Very rare. The Mémoires are the principal source for the political, economic, military and legal history of the reign of Henry IV ("le Grand"), compiled by the king's most able and most trusted minister. Henry's reign marked the rehabilitation of France's fortunes after the near-disintegration of the country during the Wars of Religion. Thomas Randolph
Oxford: Francis Bowman, 1638. Boards off: writing inside:foxing. Thomas Randolph was an English poet and dramatist, referred to by Ben Jonson as one of his "sons" for his comedic writing and poetry. He was one of the most popular playwrights of his era and in line to replace Jonson as Poet Laureate until his untimely death at the age of twenty-nine. This is a posthumous publication of his works, with several poems at the beginning dedicated "on his passing" to Randolph, a section of miscellaneous "Poems", "The Muse through the Looking Glass" and "Amyntas, or the Impossible Dowry" . In acceptable condition, there is writing and small notes throughout in old brown ink as well as some doodling. Title page has writing of what looks like a quote, and several names. A previous owner had left notes inside of repairs, noting repaired title page, ink, corners torn from leaves and missing preface "XXX4". We have noted it is missing the front boards and the back board is off but present; the ffep is loose, several pages are chipped at the edges, there is foxing throughout. Acceptable Condition: 8vo (7 1/4" x 5 1/2" sans board): embossed leather board with fading, rub and scratches: plain brown endpapers: missing most of spine: loose pages at front from ffep to title: writing on title page: notes and numbers written throughout: occasional more creative doodle: worm holes: publisher's decorations and flourishes: chipped edges and corners: "Poems with the Muses Looking-Glasse and Amyntas" by Thomas Randolph, Master of Arts and late Fellow of Trinity Colledge in Cambridge: Oxford: Printed … [Click Below for Full Description]

Aquinas, Thomas
Sumptibus Maturini Henault, Parisiis, 1638. Early printing of Aquinas' seminal work. Folio, bound in full contemporary leather with a red morocco spine label lettered in gilt, woodcut engraving of Aquinas in prayer to the title page. In very good condition with tape repairs to the title page. One of the most influential works of Western literature, the Summa of Aquinas was first published in 1485 as an instructional guide for theology students, including seminarians and the literate laity. A compendium of all of the main theological teachings of the Catholic Church, it presents the reasoning for almost all points of Christian theology in the West. Aquinas conceived the Summa specifically as a work suited to beginning students: "Because a doctor of catholic truth ought not only to teach the proficient, but to him pertains also to instruct beginners. As the Apostle says in 1 Corinthians 3: 1-2, as to infants in Christ, I gave you milk to drink, not meat, our proposed intention in this work is to convey those things that pertain to the Christian religion, in a way that is fitting to the instruction of beginners." Not only has the Summa Theologiae been one of the main intellectual inspirations for Thomistic philosophy, but it also had such a great influence on Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy, that Dante's epic poem has been called "the Summa in verse." Bound in later 1/4 calf over marbled boards. Small 4to. 48 pages. "And thou Britain especially Scotland, my dear country, the purest portion of Christ's Church in the world this day, assure thyself, and I assure thee, for I know it, that thy good people are as sheep in the midst of wolves." P. 17. A reformed (Early Presbyterian) anti-Catholic tract by a Scottish minister. In historical context, in 1638 during the year this tract was printed by Aberthany, King Charles Star Chamber sentenced other Puritan writers and pamphlet distributors to public flogging. The King raised an army to combat the Scottish Covenanters, but finding difficulty financing it was forced to call upon Parliament. In 1639m Parliament's refusal to adhere to Royal dictates created a constitutional crisis and piled the tinder for the English Civil War. Refs: Pollard & Redgrave 72; Hazlitt II, page 2. Abernethy
