Olivari Vredi
ont> Joannem Baptistam Kerchovium : Bruges Flandorum, 1639 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition.. The scarce first edition of this well known compendium of seals of the Counts of Flanders. Illustrated with beautiful engravings that have been produced with great care and detail. Lacking the title page. The signatures and text block match the 1639 first and only Latin edition of this work. There were later French and Dutch editions of this work which had their engravings issued in a separate part. These were issued under the title 'La Genealogie des Comtes de Flandre'. Collated, lacking the title page and rear endpapers. Seal to page 300, (leaf Bb4v) has a cancel adhered over the original engraving. Previous seal is still visible as the second image is only partially adhered. The same is apparent to an engraving to page 202, (R4v) Profusely illustrated, with a map of Flanders, a depiction of the coats of arms of various families, a 'tree' demonstrating the succession of the Flemish counts and the tomb slab of Giles the Norman as well as the hundreds of engravings of seals. The illustrations to this work are by Samuel and Adriaen Lommellin in addition to Francois Schelhaver, pere et fils. The illustrations to this work depict the wax seals of the gentry of Flanders. It conveys the development of seals from the ninth century to those contemporaneous to this publication in the seventeenth century. The compiler of this work, Vredius, (or Olivier de Wree/Vree) was a Flemish historian from the seventeenth century. He was also known for his role in art protection. He was from a … [Click Below for Full Description]

Contemporary limp vellum (slight damage to fore-edge of upper cover, no rear free endpaper), spine lettered in manuscript. Early owner's inscription on title-page; later armorial bookplate of Le Proux on front pastedown. A provincially published manual of anatomy that ran to at least seventeen editions in fifty years. Giegher, Mattia
Padova, Per Paolo Frambotto, [1639] M.DC.XXXIX, Seconda edizione. [Click Below for Full Description]

The constellation of Draco (the dragon), engraved by Alexander Mair for Bayer's 'Uranometria', a star atlas that shaped the way the heavens would be perceived for more than two centuries. His most important innovation was a new system of identifying stars by Greek and Roman letters, known today as the Bayer designation. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. 1639 Works of Seneca Rhetoric Stoicism Philosophy Lipsius ROME Elzevier 3v SET Lucius Annaeus Seneca (c. 4 BC - AD 65) was a Roman Stoic philosopher, statesman, dramatist, and in one work humorist, of the Silver Age of Latin literature. Works attributed to Seneca include a dozen philosophical essays, one hundred and twenty-four letters dealing with moral issues, nine tragedies, and a satire, the attribution of which is disputed. His authorship of Hercules on Oeta has also been questioned. His writings expose traditional themes of Stoic philosophy: the universe is governed for the best by a rational providence; contentment is achieved through a simple, unperturbed life in accordance with nature and duty to the state; human suffering should be accepted and has a beneficial effect on the soul; study and learning are important. Justus Lipsius (1547 - 1606) was a Flemish philologist and humanist. Lipsius wrote a series of works designed to revive ancient Stoicism in a form that would be compatible with Christianity. The most famous of these is De Constantia (On Constancy). His form of Stoicism influenced a number of contemporary thinkers, creating the intellectual movement of Neostoicism. He taught at the universities in Jena, Leiden and Leuven. Main author: Lucius Annaeus Seneca; Justus Lipsius Title: L. Annaei Senecae opera...Philosophi, Rhetoris... Jesuitica; Emblems] Oña, Pedro de.
Extremely rare poem by the first Poet of Chile. 1639. Seville. Francisco de Lyra. 8vo. 1 ff. [frontispiece], 3 ff., 214 ff., 12 full-page copper-engraved allegorical plates. Late 19th century calf, spine flat, tooled and lettered in gilt. Fine copy overall, frontispiece with outer margin slightly trimmed into engraved surface, some foxing, else very good. 6,000 $ First edition. All the engraved plates in text were made specifically for this book, and each is situated at the beginning of the Cantos; it is an epic and historical poem on the life and miracles of Saint Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Society of Jesus. Oña (Chile, 1570 – Peru, 1643) was a Chilean-born poet –arguably the first-, writer, historian, and theologian, son of Captain Gregorio de Oña, who died in the conquest of Chile; he studied arts at the Royal School of San Felipe and San Marcos. Later on he participated in an expedition to Quito, to suffocate a rebellion against the alcabalas. At the request of Garcia Hurtado de Mendoza, Viceroy of Peru –who was discontent with the treatment received in the Araucana-, Oña writes an epic poem in 19 cantos on the wars with the rebellious Chilean Indians: the Araucanos (Mapuches). Oña quite feasibly also got inspiration from Ercilla y Zuñiga´s Araucana, published in several parts. “Pedro de Oña escribió además un poema épico-heroico, repartido en cantos, titulado Ignacio de Cantabria sobre la vida y milagros de San Ignacio de Loyola, fundador de la Compañia de Jesus, que con la aprobación de Don Pedro Calderon de la Barca salio a la luz.
