GELÉE, Théophile.
A provincially published manual of anatomy that ran to at least seventeen editions in fifty years. The first edition of 1623 was the first book printed in Dieppe. Gelée was born in Dieppe, studied medicine at Montpellier, and returned to his home town to practise. This edition is extremely rare: it is not in the Catalogue Collectif de France which has a Paris edition for 1639, and not in any other collection catalogues generally referred to. Giegher, Mattia
[Click Below for Full Description]

I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. 1639 Works of Seneca Rhetoric Stoicism Philosophy Lipsius ROME Elzevier 3v SET Lucius Annaeus Seneca (c. 4 BC - AD 65) was a Roman Stoic philosopher, statesman, dramatist, and in one work humorist, of the Silver Age of Latin literature. Works attributed to Seneca include a dozen philosophical essays, one hundred and twenty-four letters dealing with moral issues, nine tragedies, and a satire, the attribution of which is disputed. His authorship of Hercules on Oeta has also been questioned. His writings expose traditional themes of Stoic philosophy: the universe is governed for the best by a rational providence; contentment is achieved through a simple, unperturbed life in accordance with nature and duty to the state; human suffering should be accepted and has a beneficial effect on the soul; study and learning are important. Justus Lipsius (1547 - 1606) was a Flemish philologist and humanist. Lipsius wrote a series of works designed to revive ancient Stoicism in a form that would be compatible with Christianity. The most famous of these is De Constantia (On Constancy). His form of Stoicism influenced a number of contemporary thinkers, creating the intellectual movement of Neostoicism. He taught at the universities in Jena, Leiden and Leuven. Main author: Lucius Annaeus Seneca; Justus Lipsius Title: L. Annaei Senecae opera...Philosophi, Rhetoris... UPenn Ms. Codex 1552 (f.115v) A full-text search on Early English Books Online revealed that the first line of this poem closely matches a poem included in a Restoration-era collection of seventeenth-century Royalist verse edited by Alexander Brome, Rump Songs(1662)[1]. In Rump Songs the poem is called "The Rump's Hypocrisy" and the text includes some variations. While I would still agree with the Penn cataloger that this poem was likely composed in the early 1640s, it does also have an afterlife in a Royalist verse collection as well as in Ms. Codex 1552. AQUINAS, Thomas
I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. "The truth can be perceived only through thinking" ― Thomas Aquinas, Summa Theologica A rare 17th-century printing of the famous "Summa Theologica" by Thomas Aquinas. This work is considered Aquinas' "most perfect work, the fruit of his mature years, in which the thought of his whole life is condensed". (Perrier, 149). 'Summa' makes references to many great thinkers and philosophers who were important during Aquinas's time - these include Paul the Apostle, Aristotle, Peter Lombard, Cicero, and Saint Augustine. 'Summa' makes many strong arguments about theology and lawful living including: · Theology is the source of divine knowledge and transcends human reason · The existence of God, God is not a metaphor · Unbelief is the worst of all sins; original sin is unavoidable · Collecting interest on loans is unlawful · Just price theory - selling something for more/less of its value is unlawful · Being a monk is greater than being married · Martyrs, teachers, and virgins receive special crowns in heaven A fine two volume set. Both volumes printed in 1639. [Attributes: First Edition]

Xavier, Jerome; Louis de Dieu, translator
Leiden Officina Elzeviriana, 1639. First edition. Small 4to (21 x 16 cm), pp.[viii], 144. Title printed in red and black, with printer's device. Text printed in Persian and Latin, with some Hebrew. A very good copy bound in modern calf-backed marbled boards, spine gilt. Title inscribed Bibliotheca Colbertina. A critical edition of a Persian life of St Peter, composed by the Jesuit missionary Jerome Xavier (1549-1617) during his residence at the court of the Mughal Emperor Akbar. Xavier compiled a number of lives of different apostles in Portuguese, which he translated into Persian for use at court. These Persian texts also circulated in manuscript amongst the small community of 17th-century European scholars interested in oriental languages. By the 1630s, Jacob Golius, the great Dutch orientalist, was aware of Xavier's Persian works, and brought them to the attention of the Protestant Biblical scholar Louis de Dieu, who translated two, our text and a life of Christ, into Latin, and provided vituperative notes. Despite de Dieu's polemical approach, his translation of Xavier's Persian original is fluent and, on the whole, accurate. He appends Xavier's annual letter from the Mughal court for 1592. Our copy comes from the library of Jean-Baptiste Colbert (1619-1683), French minister of finance and director of the Royal Library, whose vast private library was sold at auction in Paris in 1728. Folio (332 x 232 mm), pp [iv] xxxvi 316, with woodcut diagrams; a few gatherings slightly browned, margins of title and prelims frayed, overall a very good copy in contemporary Italian vellum, binding slightly warped.First edition of Renieri's 'Medicean' planetary tables, dedicated Ferdinand II de' Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany.'A friend and disciple of Galileo Galilei, Vincenzio Renieri is best remembered for his work on the satellites of Jupiter. Although little is known about his early life, Renieri joined the Olivetan order in 1623, which initially took him to Rome and a decade later to Siena, where he met Galileo (1633). Thereafter, Renieri made frequent visits to Arcetri and soon became an intimate friend of Galilei. Working closely with Vincenzio Viviani, Renieri was given the task of continuing Galilei's observations of the satellites of Jupiter and improving the computational tables. To that end, Galilei entrusted Renieri with all of his papers dealing with Jupiter's satellites, which were to be perfected and sent to the States-General of Holland as the basis for determining longitde at sea. Having accepted the chair in mathematics at Pisa (previously held by Dino Peri and earlier still by Galilei), Renieri continued to supplement Galilei's observations while improving his methods, Unfortunately, Renieri published only one work, the Tabulae medicae . (Florence 1639). Although the title is tantalizing, Renieri's widely discussed tables for Jupiter's satellites were not published during his lifetime . Mydorge (Claude)
Jean Dedin, 1639. woodcut printer's device on title and numerous woodcut diagrams in text, without the leaf of dedication to Cavendish as in most copies, somewhat browned, quite heavy in places, pp. [vi], 308, [2, errata], folio, contemporary vellum. First complete edition of Mydorge's work on conic sections, intended to provide the geometrical basis for the study of optics (books I & II had been published in 1631). 'Mydorge's work on conic sections contains hundreds of problems published for the first time, as well as a multitude of ingenious and original methods that later geometers frequently used, usually without citing their source . In his study of conic sections Mydorge continued the work of Apollonius, whose methods of proof he refined and simplified . Mydorge asserts that if from a given point in the plane of a conic section radii to the points of the curve are drawn and extended in a given relationship, then their extremities will be on a new conic section similar to the first. This statement constitutes the beginnings of an extremely fruitful method of deforming figures; it was successfully used by La Hire and Newton, and later by Poncelet and, especially, by Chasles, who named it deformation homographique' (DSB).
