Madrid, 1639. News from the Philippines, mainly from Mindanao and Jolo Islands, an exceedingly rare imprint. 1639. Madrid. Catalina del Barrio. In folio (300 mm x 200 mm). [6]. Unbound. Very good, a clean and fresh example, with minor insignificant toning. First edition. The wealth of information included in this short tract, although brief, is remarkable, with news mainly on the Mindanao and Jolo islands, their inhabitants (making mention of the privateering activities held by the Jolo islands natives), defences, nature and distances to other islands, an Embassy from Corralat (a present was brought, considered to be small and denied) and another from Cachil Monacay and belligerent actions taken against the region. It certainly constitutes one of the earliest available sources of information on the region. Exceedingly rare, not a single copy sold at auction (according to AE); according to CCPBE (Catálogo colectivo del patrimonio bibliográfico Español) there is no copy in Spain and according to Tavera -one of the foremost bibliographers on the Philippines- only a copy in the British Library could be found. Provenance: offered in 1922 by Maggs, lot 220. Tavera, 691.

Bacon, Francis
London: John Haviland and William Lee , 1639 Small folio (11 ¼ x7 ½ ), early full calf ruled in blind, morocco lettering piece, lacking frontispiece and additional title, but main title is present, [xvi], 218, [22], [iv], 43 pp. Edges lightly worn, endpapers replaced, signature 'Q" worn in outer margin, restoration to edges of title leaf and final , this copy was repaired professionally in 1968. This is an interesting collection of the miscellaneous scientific writings and experiments of Francis Bacon (1561-1626), appended with his utopian work "A New Atlantis." The book first appeared the year after his death, edited and published by William Rawley, but went through a number of editions reflecting the popularity of his writings. While Bacon would be well educated in his early years, as the youngest son in his family, he would be left without land, money or position upon his father's death in 1579. However, thanks to his tremendous intellect and political skills, he would have a very successful political and intellectual career, and would prosper under James I. Among his many accomplishments would be obtaining the post of attorney general, but bribery charges would bar him from ever holding public office again. He would publish a good deal in his later years, and legend suggests that his intellectual curiosity would eventually cost him his life, when he caught chill after experimenting with the impact of cold temperatures on decaying meat. More recently, it has been suggested that his death was caused by "inhaling remedial substances" … [Click Below for Full Description]

Liceti, Fortunio
1639. Liceti, Fortunio (1577-1657). Woodcut portrait by Giovanni Battista Coriolano (1590-1649), signed in the block by the artist. N.p., 1639. 194 x 138 mm. (image measures 172 x 130 mm.). Matted. Tiny ownership stamp on the verso, one or two marginal finger-marks, but fine otherwise. Excellent impression with good margins of one of Coriolano's most famous woodcut portraits. The subject, Italian physician and scientist Fortunio Liceti, was the author of De monstrosorum causis, natura & differentiis libri duo (1616), one of the earliest classifications of deformities (see Garrison-Morton 534.53). He also published works on astronomy and spontaneous generation, and minerology. Coriolano, the son of Cristoforo Coriolano, is best known for his woodcuts, "which resemble in style those of F. Villamena" (Bryan, Biographical Dictionary of Painters and Engravers [1886]). The verso of the print is blank, indicating that it was issued separately and not as part of a book.
