A DISCOVERY OF INFINITE TREASURE, HIDDEN SINCE THE WORLDS BEGINNING. WHEREUNTO ALL MEN, OF WHAT DEGREE SOEVER, ARE FRIENDLY INVITED TO BE SHARERS WITH THE DISCOVERER G.P

London: J[ohn] L[egat] to be sold by George Hutton, 1639. First Edition. Hardcover. Small catalog sticker on spine, trimmed along fore-edge with minor loss to title page, some soiling, else Very Good. Small quarto (5-1/8" x 7") in later polished blue morocco leather-backed boards; A4, a4, B-P4, Q2. [2, blank], 33, [1], 92, [1 errata], [1 blank] pages. Complete with the original first blank. Woodcut initials and head-pieces. An important early treatise on agriculture by one of the earliest advocates in England of an improved system of husbandry who devoted much time and money to practical experiments. Among his references are mention of the newly founded plantations in America and new agricultural machines. This copy has the cancel title page with "ver." in the Biblical quote and with the errata leaf. It is occasionally listed as a variant edition of his DISCOVERY OF SUBTERRANEALL TREASURE, but that is an error. Ferguson notes that this is a completely different work of "an original genius in husbandry who began his observations in the latter end of Queen Elizabeth's reign.... As great a genius as this writer was, the public allowed him to drop down dead in London streets with hunger only; nor had he a shirt upon his back when he died." Quite scarce. STC 19998. Ferguson, II, 207-208 (not in Young Collection). Ferguson, Glasgow, II, 567. Wellcome I, 5100. Partington II, 103. Sotheran 907, 31. ESTC s114836. Neville II, 310. Not in Duveen, Hoover.

Opera molto rara in edizione originale.

appresso i Giunti, 1639. Cm. 31, pp. (28) 220. Bel frontespizio interamente illustrato, marchio tipografico in fine e 45 figure incise entro e fuori testo (anche a piena e doppia pagina). Esemplare, a nostro parere, desiderabile.

1639. 8vo. (16), 358, (24) pp. (including final errata leaf). Small woodcut vignette to title; woodcut intitials, head and tail pieces. Modern full calf, bound to style. First edition (variant title). - A series of ten letters written from 1639 to 1641 in which Du Loir gives his impressions of Constantinople and the Sultan's court, to which the author was privy as a member of the entourage of French ambassador Jean de La Haye. The originality of this correspondence lies also in the transliteration of several Qur'an verses (letter 5) and in providing the musical source of a Turkish song. The eighth letter includes the Ottoman text (and its French translation) of an account of the conquest of Baghdad, with a bilingual translation from Ottoman into French of the several titles of the Sultan and the other dignitaries of the court. - The author spent some eighteen months in the Levant: while he was in Turkey, Sultan Murad died and Du Loir was present at the coronation of Sultan Ibrahim. He returned to Venice in 1641 after passing through the Morea; the first and the last of the letters give some account of mainland Greece and the islands. - This is the rarer (and probably earlier) variant edition, mentioned in Blackmer, with a different subtitle (instead of "contenu ... sujets"). - Contemporary ownership ("G. Carius") to title; latterly in the collection of the American dietician and professor of medicine Edward E. Cornwall (b. 1866; his ownership signature to the front free endpaper), previously inscribed to N. O. Cornwall "with a merry Christmas". Insignificant browning, but a good copy. Uncommon on the market. BM French (17th) D1038. Aboussouan 286. Cf. Atabey 373f. Blackmer 511. Weber II, 299. OCLC 43056926.

[Dastan-i Masi]. Historia Christi Persice conscripta, simulque multis modis contaminata. Leiden, Elsevier, 1639.

1639. 4to. (24), 636, (8) pp. (With:) [Dastan-i San Bidru]. Historia S. Petri Persice conscripta [...], Latine reddita [...] a L. de Dieu. Ibid., 1639. (8), 144 pp. (And:) L. de Dieu. [`Ansarha-yi zaban-i Farsi]. Rudimenta linguae Persicae. Ibid., 1639. (8), 95, (1) pp. All titles printed in red and black. Contemp. brown full calf with gilt spine. First edition of the first Persian grammar ever printed, with two Persian texts edited for the first time from manuscripts. "De Dieu's most striking performance [...] De Dieu is well aware that he is the first to publish a grammar of Persian. [...] In the preface De Dieu relates how he studied Persian with the help of the Constantinople Polyglot borrowed from Gomarus, and mentions Elichmann as the supplier of the manuscript with the 'Historia Christi', which was owned by Golius. The latter also supplied a ms. dictionary of Persian. In the annotations to the 'Historia S. Petri' the original ms. is described: it contained two more Persian texts, and was once bought by the Rotterdam physician Johannes Romanus at Agra in 1626. The volume then passed into the hands of Elichmann, who lent it to the editor. The two chapters from Genesis are taken from a complete translation in Arabic characters [by Rabbi Jacob Tawus] at Istanbul in 1546" (Smitskamp). These are lives of Christ and St Peter, originally written in Portuguese by the Jesuit priest Jerome Xavier (1549-1617) and then translated into Persian at the command of the Mughal emperor Akbar. It was at the Elseviers' request that De Dieu composed, as an addition, the elementary grammar. The grammars of Ignazio di Gesù (Rome 1661) and of Labrosse (Amsterdam 1684) were largely based on his work.         Opuscula Medica.

A beautiful map that is one of the most interesting maps of the American southeast. The map is based upon the Jodocus Hondius' map of the same area - Jansson was Hondius' son - in - law - with some updating. This shows the influence of the Hondius map, and the way his map led to an extensive dissemination of both its correct information and its errors. Hondius's map was a combination of information from two sixteenth century maps, one of the Carolinas, and one of the northern Florida/Georgia region. These were combined, and in the process many errors were introduced, not the least of which was the straightening out of the St. John's River so that it flowed from an non - existent lake located to the northwest of the mouth of the river. This lake, which would become Lake Apalachy, appeared on this and other maps well into the eighteenth century. Jansson's map is updated from the Hondius version, including coats - of - arms to indicate the spheres of influence claimed by the French in the Georgia region and the British in the Carolinas. Jansson follows Hondius in the south, but he more accurately depicts the coast in the Carolinas, based on Hessel Gerritsz's map of 1631, and has a more correct image of the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay, indicating for the first time "Newport nesa".This map shines not only in its interesting cartographic history, but also in its decorative appeal. It is a particularly fine example of the aesthetics of 17th - century Dutch cartography. The elegant calligraphy and compass roses combine with the ships in the sea and the rhumb lines in wonderful embellishment. The fully colored title and scale cartouches, the latter which shows naked putti and the former half - naked natives, add a final flourish that makes the map a delight to look at. All in all an historic map that is a very fine decorative example of the great age of Dutch cartography Amsterdam Amsterdam 500 380

[Attributes: First Edition]
