DYCK, Anthony Van [1599-1641] & Jacob NEEFS [1610-c1661].
1630. Fourth State (of 5). From Van Dyck's Iconography, a large series of prints with half-length portraits of eminent contemporaries. This is one of only eighteen of the portraits for which Van Dyck himself etched the heads and main outlines of the figure, with the rest left for an engraver to finish (the others were engraved by others after his drawings). "Portrait etching had scarcely had an existence before his time, and in his work it suddenly appears at the highest point ever reached in the art." (Hind, A History of Engraving and Etching, p. 165) "The enduring fame of van Dyck rests on his portraits. Whether he painted the patricians and artists of Antwerp, the nobles of Genoa, or the court of Charles I, van Dyck succeeded in idealizing his models without sacrificing any of their individuality. He adopted patterns of portraiture that had been formulated before, chiefly by Hans Holbein, Antonio Moro, Titian, and Rubens, but he invented innumerable variations, never losing sight of the fundamental necessity to retain an impeccable formality no matter how exact the likeness." (Encyc. Britannica) 'He painted with a relaxed elegance that was to be the dominant influence on English portrait-painting for the next 150 years." (Wikipedia) Hollstein 11. etching & engraving. 248 x 153 mm. (image) with 7 mm. borders. signed in the plate. A good impression on watermarked laid paper (short tear to bottom edge just entering image, 4 short mounting strips on top verso)

Al colophon i dati tipografici: In Venetia: appresso Evangelista Deuchino, 1624. Numerosi capolettera incisi. Piena pelle. Qualche alone di gora. Cavaliere Todeschi Academico", "In Laudem Francisci Tensini Equitis","Tavola dei capitoli", "Generoso lettore") (1) c. (ritratto). [Click Below for Full Description]

Giacomo LAURO (1561-1645/50)
Map of ancient Rome, realized by the famous Roman engraver Giacomo Lauro. The map is surrounded by a text and twenty illustrations depicting the most relevant moments in the city life, while two small maps depict the seven hills on which Rome was founded. It is not possible to date the plan; Frutaz believes it is between 1612 and before 1650. From a cartographic point of view, the plan is close to Etienne Duperac's, 1574; it was published by Giacomo de Rossi between 1649 and 1677, whenit was listed in the famous Indice della stamperia De Rossi. Copper engraving, printed on two sheets joined together, contemporary colour, light repair with the loss of part of the text on lower part, otherwise in excellent condition. A. P. Loth, Ulrich - (vor 1599 München 1662) - zugeschrieben
[Click Below for Full Description]

EEN VAN DE MOOISTE WERELDKAARTEN UIT HET BEGIN VAN DE 17DE-EEUW "Nova Totius Terrarum Orbis Geographica ac Hydrographica Tabula auct. Iud. HONDIUS, Henricus
Amsterdam: Henrici Hondius, 1630. First. unbound. Map. Engraving with original hand coloring. Image measures 14.75" x 18 7/8". Rare and early 1630 map of the Chesapeake Bay and the Virginia Colony by Henricus Hondius. Oriented with north to the right, the map shows the Chesapeake Bay in its entirety and extends from Cape Henry to the Susquehanna River. This map was a derivation of the map by John Smith from 1612, drawn from his deceased brother Jodocus' 1618 version. Settlements are marked with a house and the parameters of Smith's explorations are marked with a cross. Denotes many place names including Jamestown and geographical and topographical elements. Features two architectural arnate cartouches and a coat of arms. A Sasquesahanough Indian is featured below the cartouche. An elaborate vignette showing the Powhatan King surrounded by his subjects in an early depiction of a Native American Longhouse is included in the top left. The map is considered by some to be one of the most important maps of America ever produced. This is the first state, with no text on verso, dating this map to 1630. This map is in good condition with verso reinforcements along the centerfold and top margin. Minor toning. Beautiful original color. Jodocus Hondius (1563-1612) was the founder of a prolific map publishing business, which helped to propel the Dutch to lead the Golden Age of cartography. When Jodocus the elder died in 1612, his wife Colette ran the business until their sons came of age to join the firm. Gérard MERCATOR, Jodocus HONDIUS
Second edition of the text in French, published by Jean Jansson. It is illustrated with an allegorical frontispiece title and presents, like the other copies of this edition, two labels (title and address of the publisher) in French pasted on the title page of the Latin print of 1628. The copy contains 143 full-size intaglio cards.Contemporary binding in vellum with gold flaps, spine decorated with fleurons, fleurs-de-lys and gilded nets, ink title in the top compartment, boards decorated with a double framing of nets and gilt fillet, small golden irons in spandrels, as well as a large gilt typographic motif in their center, all slices flecked with red. Several handwritten ex-dono on the title page.It is in 1604 that the cartographer Jodocus Hondius (1563-1612) wins Gerard Mercator's (1512-1594) charts, whose work he greatly admired, at auction. While the enthusiasm for Abraham Ortelius' (1527-1597) Theatrum Orbis Terrarum is in full swing, Hondius decides to republish his mentor's maps and add thirty six of his collection to the one hundred and seven already acquired. In 1606, he publishes this new form of Atlas, whose success--all copies were sold out after barely a year--will lead him to publish the first edition of his Atlas minor the following year. The sale of this reduced format, allowing for an improved handling, obviously uncovers a commercial strategy. Upon Hondius' death in 1612, his son Henricus and his son-in-law Jean Jansson will continue the work of their elder, themselves offering a version of the Atlas minor, whose format will be increased considerably from … [Click Below for Full Description]
