Sir Francis Bacon 1st Viscount St. Alban
London: William Washington, 1629. Second edition of Proficiency and Learning by Sir Francis Bacon (1561-1626) printed close to his lifetime The Two Bookes of Sir Francis Bacon Of Proficience and Advancement of Learning, Divine and HumaneBy Sir Francis Bacon (1st Viscount St Alban). Second Edition (the first edition was printed in 1605) London: Printed by William Washington, 1629. NOTE: we now use the term "proficiency" instead of "proficience". A nice alternative to the first edition of 1605 which will typically set you back $7500 to $12,500.Size, Binding: Small quarto or large octavo, about 8 x 5 1/2" (20x14 cm) leather binding, rebound to style probably in the late 20th century in dark brown leather with parallel line tooling at the edges, a common style for late Elizabethan, early Jacobean books. The edges of the binding are in gilt, probably done during its rebinding. Collates as follows: two later blanks (probably from rebind), one period blank, title page, Main Text Booke One 1-90, Second Booke 91-335, two period blanks, two later blanks. Condition: near fine pages (except two leaves) injust about fine binding. Inscription dated 1886 on the period blank, and notes to paste down at the back with a small sticker in the lower right-hand corner, "Nicholas Wall Sometimes his book". Just about all pages grade at near fine to fine, with only two shortcomings: a 1/3" chip to the lower right-hand edge of the first page of Book One (page 1/2) not affecting text, and 1/4" chip to the lower right-hand corner of page 105/106, again not affecting text.NOTE: Sir Francis Bacon, Lord … [Click Below for Full Description]

[WIC].
32 pp.One of four issues published in the same year, of a pamphlet concerning the possibility of a truce with Spain, containing the "considerations and reasons" proposed by the Dutch West-India Company (WIC) to the Dutch States General. After the loss of 's Hertogenbosch in 1629 the Spanish King Philip IV proposed a truce, which left the Dutch Republic divided, also causing debate between the Remonstrants, Counter-Remonstrants and Calvinists, who first wished to create unity before paying attention to Spain. The directors and shareholders of the WIC dreaded a truce with Spain, since capturing Spanish ships was a large source of income for the company (Piet Heyn had captured the Zilvervloot in 1628). It would also have thwarted the WIC intentions to conquer some Spanish territory in Brazil. With modern bookplate. Title-page slightly thumbed and a marginal tear in page 15/16, only just touching the text (not affecting the legibility). Otherwise in very good condition.l Alden & Landis 1629/102; Knuttel 3911; STCN 830228950; cf. Asher 130; Sabin 15930-15931.

VENEL, Adrien
Arnheim, 1629. Prophetic Visions of a Bohemian Damoiselle, as Recorded by a Polish Physician Christina Poniatowska and her family, all members of the Bohemian Brethren, a Protestant free-church community, were expelled from Bohemia in 1627, when Christina was sixteen years old. Living in the house in which Christina landed was the young Czech philosopher and educator Johann Amos Comenius. It was later that year--12 November--when Christina first ascended to the state of bizarre ecstasy for which she is best remembered, and to which Comenius bore most lasting witness, recording her prophesies in his Lux in tenebris [1657]. Her last ecstasy, early in 1629, was so profound that she was declared dead and funeral arrangements were made. Miraculously, she recovered, and never again experienced visions, and died fifteen years later, at age 34. Her prophetic visions were usually interpreted politically, and seen exclusively as anti-Papist, encouraging the reestablishment of the Evangelic church. Her most famous vision, which she dictated in a letter, predicted the death of von Wallenstein, an event that came to pass in 1634. The present work, the first French edition of Christina's visions, is compelling in that describes not only the substance and circumstances of more than forty ecstasies (characterized by the author, Polish physician Adrien Venel, as epilepsies) that she experienced through February 1629, but also the medical treatment she received for many. Four or five institutional copies survive: BnF (two copies?), UB Basel, B Ste-Genevieve, and UB Leiden. Octavo in four … [Click Below for Full Description]

Modern red half leather. 32 pp. One of four issues published in the same year, of a pamphlet concerning the possibility of a truce with Spain, containing the "considerations and reasons" proposed by the Dutch West-India Company (WIC) to the Dutch States General. I am sure you know this work published in 1629 in Rome by Bartolomeo Zannetti but do you have the first edition (8vo format - 152 x 102 mm) with woodcut Jesuit device on title and with later boards as you can see on the 5th picture. The letters in this book include relations from Ethiopia (1627, Almeyda) Kiatim, China (1626, Diaz) and Macao (1591-1631. Baldinotti). In particular, Baldinotti gives an important early account of Vietnam and the Jesuit mission there. Jesuit Emmanuel Diaz (1559-1639) arrived in China in 1615, was exiled to Macao following the persecutions at Nanking in 1616 and was sent back to Peking in 1621. Nominated Vice-Provincial for China in 1623 following the death of Jean de Rocha, he held this position with great skill and diplomacy for 18 years. Cambridge, England: Cambridge University Press, 1629. The King James Version was first published in 1611, and first edition copies start at about $100K.This large folio Bible is one of only three first edition "Cambridge" printings (1629), published 18 years later, I've seen anywhere for sale. The other two were offered at $29K and $25K. This one was purchased from one of the two or three most reputable antique Bible dealers in the country, and this is the finest copy of a first edition Cambridge KJV that he had ever seen. Ironically, the retooled leather cover says, "Book of Common Prayer," but this may reflect the title on an earlier spine, as well as the Anglican tendency, so often pointed out by Separatists and Non-Conformists, to hold the Prayer Book in higher esteem than the Bible itself. It also reflects the first of the five sections of this volume, all under one cover: 1) Book of Common Prayer 2) Old Testament 3) Apocrypha 4) New Testament 5) Metric Psalms (theAnglican "hymnal" of the time) Size -- 12 inches by 8 inches by 3 inches Please note -- The first two pages at the beginning of the Book of Common Prayer section are reinforced by thin Japanese paper, with small worn traces at the fringes. There are a few pages with some faint damp staining on the edges, without offense to the pages as a whole. The general Title Page is possibly a fine facsimile on sympathetic cotton linen paper, but it is also possibly original (as the "match" is nearly perfect, if it is a replacement). Light browning, a very good copy, bound in contemporary vellum boards, title inked on spine (binding dulled and slightly worn and warped, but still good). Inscription on title-page of Pinault. First edition. Protestant work, printed in Geneva but sold in France, and written as a dialogue between father and son, on the question of whether it is acceptable to attend Mass in order to evade persecution. The problem is analogous to the questions Catholics were having to ask themselves in England. La Place (1596-1655/1665) was a professor at the university of Saumur and proponent of a brand of moderated Calvinism that followed the Scottish theologian John Cameron (c.1579-1625). [Click Below for Full Description]

William Camden
London: Symon Waterson, 1629. Remaines concerning Brittaine, but especially England, and the inhabitants thereof: : their languages, names, syrnames, allusions, anagrammes, armories, moneys, empresses, apparell, artillerie, wise speeches, prouerbes, poesies, epitaphs Camden, William. London: Printed by A. I. for Symon Waterson, 1629. The Fourth Impression, reuiewed, corrected and increased. William Camden (1551-1623), English antiquary, scholar, author, historian, topographer and herald, lived in the reigns of Elizabeth I and James I. His major work was Brittania, a topographical and historical survey of Great Britain and Ireland, one of the great achievements of 16th century scholarship. He continued to revise and expand it through his lifetime. A companion to the Brittania is this book, Remaines of a Greater Worke, Concerning Britaine, first published in 1605. He described it as "the rude rubble and out-cast rubbish of a greater and more serious worke," but the Remaines contains a wealth of information even though it is, some may say, an ungainly and shapeless collection. Frequently witty, wise, and richly varied, it amalgamates together Camden's interest in literature, language, as well as his keen insights into social and cultural history. For instance, his essay on "Money" is one of the earliest accounts of the English coinage printed in English. Camden's Remaines is also the earliest or sole usage cited for a word in the Oxford English Dictionary; and further significant early usages (including new words and antedatings) have since been identified. In addition, the Re … [Click Below for Full Description]
