With final blank. Small woodcut device to title-page. Woodcut head-piece and initial. Light browning, a very good copy, bound in contemporary vellum boards, title inked on spine (binding dulled and slightly worn and warped, but still good). Inscription on title-page of Pinault. First edition. Protestant work, printed in Geneva but sold in France, and written as a dialogue between father and son, on the question of whether it is acceptable to attend Mass in order to evade persecution. The problem is analogous to the questions Catholics were having to ask themselves in England. La Place (1596-1655/1665) was a professor at the university of Saumur and proponent of a brand of moderated Calvinism that followed the Scottish theologian John Cameron (c.1579-1625). A second edition appeared in 1658. In North America and UK, OCLC (01/18) shows copies of this edition: Dickinson College (PA); University of Wisconsin, Madison; Oxford, BL, NLS. Binet Estienne
Paris: 1629. Rare édition ancienne. Estienne Binet. [Click Below for Full Description]

William Camden
London: Symon Waterson, 1629. Remaines concerning Brittaine, but especially England, and the inhabitants thereof: : their languages, names, syrnames, allusions, anagrammes, armories, moneys, empresses, apparell, artillerie, wise speeches, prouerbes, poesies, epitaphs Camden, William. London: Printed by A. I. for Symon Waterson, 1629. The Fourth Impression, reuiewed, corrected and increased. William Camden (1551-1623), English antiquary, scholar, author, historian, topographer and herald, lived in the reigns of Elizabeth I and James I. His major work was Brittania, a topographical and historical survey of Great Britain and Ireland, one of the great achievements of 16th century scholarship. He continued to revise and expand it through his lifetime. A companion to the Brittania is this book, Remaines of a Greater Worke, Concerning Britaine, first published in 1605. He described it as "the rude rubble and out-cast rubbish of a greater and more serious worke," but the Remaines contains a wealth of information even though it is, some may say, an ungainly and shapeless collection. Frequently witty, wise, and richly varied, it amalgamates together Camden's interest in literature, language, as well as his keen insights into social and cultural history. For instance, his essay on "Money" is one of the earliest accounts of the English coinage printed in English. Camden's Remaines is also the earliest or sole usage cited for a word in the Oxford English Dictionary; and further significant early usages (including new words and antedatings) have since been identified. In addition, the Re … [Click Below for Full Description]

Pemble, William (1592?-1623
Printed by R. Young for John Bartlet, at the signe of the gilt, 1629. First Edition. Hardcover. 8vo. [8], 165 pp. including full-page woodcut plate bound as frontispiece (intended to be placed between pp. 50/51). COLLATION: A-Y4, without the final blank leaf, otherwise COMPLETE. Provenance: blindstamps of the Theological Institute Connecticut (now known as the Hartford Seminary) with ink-stamp. NB: in 1976 a collection of more than 200,000 books from the Hartford Seminary Library were sold to Emory University, including this one --> deaccessioned from Pitts Theology Library. Attractive recent half calf antique, marbled boards, five raised bands on spine, compartments gilt, red morocco label in the second. Very good. ¶ First Edition of this highly curious Elizabethan theological work, illustrated with a strange and wonderful woodcut of the "Vision of the Golden Candlestick" (Zech. 4). Rare on the market: this is the only copy known to us in private ownership; the last copy on the market was defective (sale at Sotheby's London on May 6, 1974, lot 73 - to Maggs). ¶ This interpretation of Zechariah (I-IX) is perhaps Pemble's final work: "He died in the flower of his age, as he was making his lectures on the prophecy of Zechariah (finishing but nine chapters of fourteen)... of a burning fever" (SOURCE: Fuller, History of the Worthies of England, vol. 3, p. 258). Published posthumously, as were all Pemble's works, through the offices of former tutor Richard Capel, who edited this work and signed the preface. "He appears to have been a good Hebrew scholar, and employs his learning … [Click Below for Full Description]

HOLLAR, WENCELAUS
von der Hayden, Strasbourg, 1629. FIRST STATE, copper engraving, elephant in profile in his natural habitat, 10 smaller images showing an elephant performing tricks, central vertical fold, small print mark, slight offsetting, overall size 242 x 276mm, von der Hayden, Strasbourg, 1629 A scarce print showing the exhibition of the elephant 'Hansken', produced during Hollar’s residence in Frankfurt. 10-year-old Hansken performed at the 1629 Easter fair. In a letter, Johannes Peitzker describes Hansken as “.not only that he be wonderful to see himself, but also that he could do thirty tricks. And it was much bigger than the one who is painted at the Schmittstuben. [translated from German]”. These tricks include shooting a pistol with his trunk, blowing a trumpet and carrying a bucket of water for the audience to wash their hands. Wencelaus Hollar was a Bohemian etcher whose work includes some 400 drawings and 3000 etchings. After studying in Frankfurt under engraver and publisher Matthaus Merian, he moved to Strasbourg, and then Cologne. Here he attracted the attention of the collector Thomas, Earl of Arundel, with whom he was associated for most of his life. The range of his work covers, from views and landscapes to portraits, ships and religious figures, provides a rich source of information about the 17th century. Collections of Hollar’s work are kept in the British Museum, Windsor Castle, The Fisher Library in Toronto, and the National Gallery in Prague. [Attributes: First Edition]

[Click Below for Full Description]
