Binet Estienne
Paris: 1629. Rare édition ancienne. Estienne Binet. [Click Below for Full Description]

Meanwhile in London, Christopher Barker had acquired a virtual monopoly in Bible printing by virtue of his patent as Royal printer, granted in 1577. In seeking to break that monopoly, Cambridge University Press and the Bucks insisted that they had the means to produce far better edited editions of the Bible in their university town. Jacques CALLOT (Nancy 1592 - 1635)
Nicolas La Coste, 1629. La comédie des comédies, a four-act comedy in prose and verse for eight characters, is cleverly structured as an Italian comedy translated into French. The play, however, is not translated from Italian but consists of the frequent quotation from the letters of the essayist Jean-Louis Guez de Balzac. Balzac's "swelling phrases and metaphorical expressions are cleverly caricatured" (Lancaster, 367). The model for the play is an Italian farce in which le Docteur (modeled on Balzac) has an inflated notion of his erudition. It is a rare theatrical satire probably compiled by a member of the Feuillant sect. La comédie des comédies was never played in theatres.

Link to full description: www.goldenlegend.com/pdfs/dupeschier.pdf

Incisione in rame, in ottime condizioni. Rara. Rare map of Malta and a part of Sicily, based upon Matteo Perez d'Aleccio's map, which appeared in J. Badouin's rare Histoire des Chevaliers de l'Ordre de S. Jean de Jerusalem, published in Paris in 1629. Raignauld's map derives from two of the most important 16th Century maps of Malta, the maps of Antonio Lafreri (1551) and Matteo Perez d'Aleccio. D'Aleccio was an artist who was the official painter for the Order of the Knights of St. John at the time of the successful defense of Malta from Turkish attack in 1565 and was charged with illustrating the defense of the island. He painted a number of frescoes and other works, … [Click Below for Full Description]

Legatura coeva in piena pergamena morbida.

The map is based on the first state of Smith's map, 1612, and is slightly larger and more expertly engraved. The firts state of this plate was published by Hondius. In 1629 the Hondius plate was purchased by Blaeu who deleted Hondius' name and added his own to the imprint, constituting the second state. (BOUND WITH) The Whole Book of Psalms Cambridge: Printed by Tho: and John Buck, printers to the University of Cambridge, 1629. ---o0o--- A rare, important and gorgeously bound English folio Bible! This is the first King James Bible printed at Cambridge, a folio edition and a true model of fine editing, introducing nearly 500 changes that have become standard to the modern day. Cambridge began to print the Bible in the Geneva version in 1558 under a charter granted by Henry VIII in 1534. In 1628, Charles I ratified Henry VIII's charter, and this Bible was the first publication produced after that act. It was, indeed, significantly more accurate than the Barker editions of the King James Bible … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

Facsimile. Symeon of Polack (1629, Polack -- 1680, Moscow) Actor of Eastern Slavic culture, spiritual writer, theologian, poet, dramatist, translator. Born in a prosperous family, he received a brilliant primary education. In 1656 he took his vows to the Polaсk Epiphany convent where during the next 8 years he taught at the brotherhood school. In 1651, he graduated from Kyiv Mohyla Academy, and from Wilno Jesuit Academy in 1653. In 1664, he moved to Moscow where he was warmly welcomed at the royal court and received an opportunity to handle educational activity. In 1667, he was assigned a mentor for the royal children. In the late 1670s he founded and headed a printing house in the Kremlin. Here he published his 'The Governing Crosier' (1667), two collections of works: 'The Garden of Many Flowers' (1678) and 'Rhythmologion' (1680). He wrote two plays (school dramas): the comedy 'Action of the Prodigal Son' and 'On Nebuchadnezzar the King'. After the enlightener's death his sermons were published in two books: 'The Spiritual Midday Meal' (1681) and 'The Spiritual Evening Meal' (1683). His art represented a distinctive Eastern Slavic type of Baroque culture which was based on the synthesis of medieval and renaissance values on the one hand and on the other, a compromise between Orthodox traditionalism and European rationalism.

[Click Below for Full Description]
