Marchio tipografico al frontespizio bicromo, bellissimi finalini xilografici. Graziosa legatura settecentesca in mezza pelle; dorso a 5 nervi con titoli e ricchi fregi dorati agli scomparti. Tagli rossi. - (It is to defend the knife). A bird's eye view of Den Bsoch with Sint-Janskathedraal (Sint Johns Cathedral) near the river Dieze (the Netherlands), with in the foreground a dog and hedgehog on a book with sword. This delicate engraving originates from 'Thesauri Philo-Politici' / 'Thesaurus Philopoliticus' / 'Politisches Schatzkastleins'. This work was originally created in the period 1623-1632 and consisted of 16 parts, first published separately and then together in 2 books of 8 parts ea. Altogether it had 830 prints. Later editions were published in 1637-1638 by Paul Furst (titled 'Sciographia Cormica') and in 1678 by his widow (titled:'Sciagraphia Cosmica'). Complete editions are scarse. The primary objective was the poetry and accompanying emblems with a moralising symbolism. The city views were secondary and mainly served for decoration. There is no particular tie between the poetry and the city. The city views were mostly engraved after popular engravings at the time from the works of Guicciardini, Braun/Hogenberg, Munster and others. The Poetry consists of a aphorism or theme in German or Latin at the top, a 2 line relating poem in Latin below the image and a 4 line relating poem in German below. In the engravings there is always a foreground which illustrates the theme and a city view in the background. Etching / engraving on hand laid (verge) paper. Made by an anonymous engraver after 'Daniel Meisner'. Author: Daniel Meisner (1585-1625) was a Bohemian / German poet. Very good, given age. Small stain in lowe … [Click Below for Full Description]

Francis Quarles
A compilation of Quarles' works. The overall title page with details of the publisher is missing, but there is a dedication to King Charles I which was clearly specially written for the work, which makes it likely that it was published in the 1630's (it makes no reference to Civil War). Each work has a separate title page or a large heading, and retains the dedications etc written when they were first published. The first text is 'A Feast for Worms' totalling 64 pages, which has a note for the Reader and has pages 13-36 misbound out of sequence. The second is Pentelogia, a short text covering pp 65-70. The third is Hadassa with a separate title page, preface to the Reader, introduction, dedication, and the History of Esther, running to p 147. The fourth is Job Militant with half title page, proposition, dedication and text running to p 231. The fifth is the History of Sampson with no title page but starting with 'To the Reader' and text to p 232. The sixth is Sion's Sonnets with a separate title page, note to readers and sonnets to p 369. The seventh is Sion's Elegies with a title page, note to the Reader and text through to p 431. There is an Epitaph - Her Epitaph - after the end page of the Elegies. In original full leather binding with raised bands. The binding is worn with split joints and wear to corners, edges and spine. The contents are in good clean condition and appear complete bar the initial title page and any preliminaries before the dediction to King Charles. There is some browning to page edges. Willem Janszoon BLAEU (Uitgeest 1571- Amsterdam 1638)
Incisione in rame, coloritura coeva, in ottime condizioni. Molto decorativa. KOEMAN: Me 184 & 185. Decorative full color example of Blaeu's map of Iceland. A stunning map, including an erupting volcano, sea monsters, sailing ships, decorative cartouches, compass rose and the spectacular landscape of Iceland. Carolius used Mercator's version of Bishop Gudbrandur Thorlaksson's map as his source. An attractive and detailed map of Iceland with an elaborate title cartouche in the lower left corner. The map was drawn by Joris Carolus, a pilot and map maker from Enkhuizen, who was also responsible for numerous manuscript maps as well as other charts of the northern seas that were later published by Jansson. Sea monsters, compass roses and a sailing ship decorate the surrounding ocean. Koeman/Krogt, Atlantes Neerlandici, Vol 1 #1250
