The Countrey Justice, Containing the Practice of the Justices of.

1630 - Dalton, Michael [d. 1648?]. The Countrey Justice: Containing the Practice of the Justices of the Peace Out of their Sessions: Gathered for the Better Helpe of Such Iustices of Peace as Have Not Been Much Conversant in the Studie of the Lawes of This Realme: Now the Fourth Time Published, And Revised, Corrected, And Inlarged, The Additions Being Thus Marked, [Pointing Hand]. London: Printed by the Assigns of John Moore, 1630. [xii], 136, 133-276, 273-410, [14] pp. Folio (10-3/4" x 7"). Contemporary quarter sheep over marbled boards, raised bands, gilt ornaments and lettering piece to spine. Some rubbing to boards and extremities, corners bumped and lightly worn, a few tiny scuffs to boards, hinges cracked, early armorial bookplate (of Sir William Jenningham) to front pastedown. Woodcut head and tail-pieces. Light toning to text, internally clean. * Fourth edition. This venerable justice of the peace manual went through some twenty editions between 1618 and 1746. This work is also significant because it firmly established the alphabetical topical structure adopted in later texts. Rooted in Crompton, Fitzherbert and Lambard, The Countrey Justice offers advice on such matters as buggery, customs, highways, prisons, riots, soldiers, murder, felonies, rogues and vagabonds, wool, and high treason. Though "not a judicial authority" says Marvin, "it is of considerable weight." Marvin, Legal Bibliography (1847) 251. Sweet & Maxwell, A Legal Bibliography of the British Commonwealth 1:227 (24).         Nova Reperta

Antwerp. unbound. very good(+). Johannes Galle. View. Uncolored engraving. Images measures 7.5" x 10.5". Beautiful impression of the frontispiece to "Nova Reperta", ca. 1630. Johannes Stradanus or van der Straat, (1523-1605) was a Flemish artist but spent most of his life in Florence. Stradanus sent his original drawings of "Nova Reperta" ("New Inventions"), a Renaissance celebration of recent discoveries both scientific and geographical, to Antwerp where they were first engraved and published by Phillipe Galle circa 1600. This edition was republished by Galle's grandson. The frontispiece shows an array of discoveries and inventions, being welcomed by a female figure (Modernity), while a male figure turns away (representing the Old Order). Specific objects represented include the Americas, a compass, a cannon, a printing press, a clock, tools of alchemy, a Mulberry tree (used to harvest silkworms), a saddle with stirrups, and logs of the guaiacum tree, which was thought to cure Syphilis (also newly "discovered" in the New World). Light scattered foxing, minor tape residue to edges. Slight abrasion to top center.

        America Meridionalis

Amsterdam: Jodocus Hondius, 1630. unbound. very good. Map. Engraving with hand coloring. Image measures 14.25" x 19.5". Stunning impression of South America. Many coastal towns are named, while much of the interior of the continent is less detailed. Tierra del Fuego is depicted as a large land mass. Includes several animated vignettes, such as ships sea monsters and indigenous people. Also included is an inset of a birds eye view of Cuzco in Peru. From the "Mercator-Hondius Atlas". Plate was originally made by Mercator and later added to by Hondius. Minor chipping along top edge and small tear to top right edge. Mercator (1512-1594) was an accomplished mathematician, cartographer, globe maker and engraver but is best known for the Mercator Projection. Incorporating the newly accepted fact that the world is round, Mercator was able to render longitude lines consistently straight on a chart. Although this requires some distortion, it was of great use for navigators, and is historically important, as it is still the most commonly used projection today.

Leiden, 1630. No Binding. Fine. 11 x 14 inches. Fine condition. A key early map of Florida that differs significantly from previous works. Although Cumming says the De Laet combines information found on the Ortelius/Chiaves and the 1606 Mercator maps, it in fact contains substantial new information not found on these maps. The place names St. Augustine and Tampa Bay are seen here but are not on the Ortelius and the Wytfliet (1597) maps. The general shape of the Floridian peninsula is altered and called 'Tegesta Provinc,' one of the earliest appearances of a name that would be commonly used through the early 18th Century. Unlike the earlier maps, a series of barrier islands appears along the eastern shore of Florida on the de Laët, and a large fictional bay is also added in the southwestern corner of the peninsula. Again, unlike the Ortelius and Wytfliet, islands along the Gulf Coast between Florida and the Mississippi River are shown on the de Laët. In addition, the Suwannee River in the northwestern part of the peninsula is accurately placed on the de Laët but is named the "R. del Spiritu Santu." Hessel Gerritsz (b. 1580/81), the actual maker of the map, was one of the most important Dutch cartographers of the seventeenth century. At the age of 37, he was appointed the chief cartographer of the Dutch East India Company over the senior and more widely known , Willem Blaeu.. He subsequently drew maps for the West India Company as well, of which Johannes de Laët was one of the Directors. De Laët published this map as part of his book Nieuwe Wereldt ofte Beschrijvinghe van West-Indien. Cumming #34; Imago Mundi, VI, pp. 61-62.

// Modern calf, covers with gilt border and inside corner ornaments, gilt spine on 5 raised bands, [140] ff. (age-toned). Very good copy on coarse paper. Extremely rare Rouen edition of an adaptation of the medieval story of Amis and Amyles (Amile). Physically identical, Ami and Amile are spiritual twins, conceived and born on the same day; their meeting is preordained, and together they go to serve Charlemagne. The allegorically named Ami substitutes without anyone's knowledge for Amile in a judicial duel, which Amile cannot fight himself because he knows that he is guilty, as accused, of having slept with the emperor's daughter. Ami swears his innocence and wins. Charlemagne, believing it is Amile who is innocent, proceeds to betroth the daughter to him; Ami, who cannot now reveal his true identity, accepts her. As he is already married, God punishes his prospective bigamy by afflicting him with leprosy. His wife drives him away from home. After years of illness, he meets Amile again, who learns from an angel that he can cure Ami only by bathing him in the blood of his own children. With some misgivings Amile cuts his young sons' throats, Ami is healed, and a miracle restores the children to life. The friendship of the 2 heroes surpasses all other social relationships in the text to such an extent that in the end all other ties are abandoned and the friends leave France together. Title within double border of type ornaments. Woodcut illustration on title and one in text. Printed in 2 cols. Bookpl.: Edward Davenport, [Heilbrun], W L G. / Ref. BN Paris (1). Not in Goldsmith (BL London), Le livre populaire etc. // Photos available upon request.

        OF WISDOME, THREE BOOKES

1630. CHARRON, Pierre. OF WISDOME, THREE BOOKES. Written in French by Peter Charron, Doctor of Lawe in Paris. Translated by Samson Lennard. London, Edward Blount and William Aspley (printed by George Miller, 1630). Engraved portrait of the translator by R. Vaughan, and engraved title with allegorical figures by William Hole. (2)ff., (xxx)588(34)pp. This translation first appeared in 1608. The book in hand is probably the 3rd edition. Charron (1541-1603), one of the 25 children of a bookseller, studied law and then entered the Church. His first books defended the Catholic Church as the Only True Church. In "De la Sagesse" (1603), however, he expressed a skepticism which caused the book to be suppressed in France, though extremely popular in England. He was cynical about human nature, and although he felt religion to be irrational, he advised unquestioning faith. His chief departure was separating morality from religion. His friend and mentor Montaigne thought so highly of him that in his will he asked Charron to wear the arms of the Montaigne family. In early calf, worn at extremities and lacking paste-downs. Dampstain to four leaves of the preface; discoloring to margin of one leaf of "contents,"and light foxing to the two engraved plates. An extremely influential work.

(15 x 9 1/2 inches). Text in two columns. [11], 427, [14]; [6], 373, [14]; [8], 40, 33-209, [12] pp. 3 engraved titles, 50 full-page engraved illustrations (images in vol. 3 present as engraved plates without text on verso), each depicting several ornithological figures. (Tab. II in Lib. XIX trimmed along fore-edge into the image, the plate restitched into the text block, scattered staining and edge tears). Early ink annotations to the plates translating the Latin names into English. Contemporary speckled calf, covers double ruled in blind, rebacked to style with raised bands, spine in seven compartments. An early edition of an important illustrated Renaissance ornithology, including several New World birds. Aldrovandi's encyclopedic work, first published in Bologna between 1599 and 1603, was among the principal ornithologies of the Renaissance. Divided into twenty chapters, the work describes numberous birds, based on Aristotle's classifications, and include descriptions of plumage, structure, habitat, voice, and more. However, the work is particularly noted for its excellent illustrations. "The value of Aldrovandi's ornithology is enhanced by its many original illustrations, which are often good ... No effort or expense was spared in obtaining the pictorial material on which ... Aldrovandi spent all his fortune" (Anker). Among the illustrations are several early depictions of New World birds, including figures of the Cardinal and Wild Turkey. Ulisse Aldrovandi (1522-1605) was an Italian botanist, pharmacologist, and the author of several encyclopedic works on natural history. "This celebrated naturalist ... devoted his life to lecturing, collecting specimens, and in writing and illustrating numerous treatises on biological subjects" (Wood). He left his collections and library to the town of Bologna, which now reside in the University there. His manuscripts are also in Bologna, including the many woodcut blocks used to illustrate his works and the original drawings from which the blocks were cut. This later German edition is comprised of volumes one and two of the 1630 edition with a third volume dated 1613; all are printed in Frankfurt. The later editions of his work are significant, as they contain more detailed copperplate engravings, rather than the woodcuts found in the early editions. Anker, Bird Books and Bird Art, pp.11-12.         Nova Virginiae Tabula

Amsterdam, 1630. No Binding. Near Fine. 14 ¾ x 18 ¾ inches. Fine original color; marginal mend, else excellent condition. A beautiful example in superb original color of the classic Dutch engraving of Capt. John Smith's map of the Chesapeake Bay and region, the first European map of the area. Smith's map was a remarkably accurate work for its period and is a valuable record of Indian tribes that existed at the time. In fact, the map is unusual in acknowledging the role of Indian informants in its creation; Maltese Crosses indicate the areas beyond which were based on Indian reports. Also found on the engraving is a portrait of Powhatan in the upper left. The plate from which this map was printed was engraved in 1618 by Jodocus Hondius Junior, son of the great map and globe publisher. It is now believed (see Burden) that the plate was sold to the Blaeu firm in 1630, at which time the imprint was changed to that of Blaeu. (Ghosts of the incompletely erased J and H of the Hondius imprint are visible beneath that of Blaeu.) The 1618 state of the map, which is extremely rare, was the earliest derivative of Smith's map, which was originally published in England in 1612. The firm of Henricus Hondius, the other son of the master, copied the map from the Hondius-Blaeu version adding its own imprint. Thus, the sequence of Dutch editions of the map, in the folio format, is from J. Hondius Jr. to Blaeu to H. Hondius. Burden 193; Verner in Tooley America, pp. 161-62.

        Mappa Aestivarum Insularum, alias Barmudas

Amsterdam, 1630. No Binding. Near Fine. 16 x 21 inches. Fine original color; excellent condition. The most richly decorative, early map of the island in a very attractive, original-colored example. It was based on Richard Norwood's 1618 chart, executed in behalf of the Bermuda Company. The map thus includes the parishes and tribes allotted to the company's principal members, with their names included, most of which survive to this day. The map vividly illustrates how hazardous the coastline of Bermuda was, and is, to shipping by the almost unbroken ring of crosses signifying wrecks surrounding the island. The map's majestic cartouche depicts Neptune, standing astride the English Royal Arms, bearing a trident in one hand and a Dutch ship in the other. The engraving actually includes two maps of Bermuda of different scales: Nestled within the hook of the island is another, smaller depiction of Bermuda, placed there to show its position and size relative to Cape Cod, Virginia and Nova Scotia. This design proved confusing to some later copiers, who dispensed with the mainland in their renditions while mistakenly retaining the smaller "Bermuda" as a small island off the coast of Bermuda.

1630 - Striking view of the naval siege of the Dutch forces on Bahia de Todos los Santos. 1624 [c.1630]. [Amsterdam]. Trimmed at foot on left side touching neatline. 370 mm x 190 mm. Of great iconographic value, it gives a detailed view of the city being sieged by Dutch forces, just after it was sacked and taken. Salvador was the centre of the economic power in Portuguese Brazil; this view was reproduced in several editions, often without the title at top, in fact, we have never seen another example of this edition. The map shows the city of Salvador under Dutch siege; the city is well represented and is of great iconographic value. In late 1623, a force of 26 ships was sent to attack, raid and take Salvador from the Portuguese; the mission was successful, but for a short while, as the next year the Portuguese retook it. This later attack was also successful, again only for a while, as the Dutch went at it again in 1627, the succession of events was well graphically represented by Visscher and Gerritsz [cartographer to the Dutch East and West India Co.]. Although there is a numbered key on the cities important buildings, there is no text underneath. An inset map of the Brazilian coast is found on the lower left side. The Portuguese presence in Salvador was long standing, as early as the second half of the 16th century. The city swiftly became one of the most important in the region.

Sabin, 40057. J. C. Brown, III, 230. No en Church. Palau, 135740.

Persio tradotto in verso sciolto e dichiarato da Francesco Stelluti Accad. Cardinale Barberino.

ICCU IT\ICCU\RMRE\002177).

Acquaforte e bulino, circa 1630, firmata in lastra in basso a destra. Etching and engraving, 1630 circa, signed at lower right. Example of the first state of two, before the address of Israel Silvestre was added. Magnificent work, rich shades, printed on contemporary laid paper with ?duoble C with Cross of Lorraine?watermark (Lieure 29), trimmed to the platemark, minor repairs perfectly realized, otherwise in good condition. Saint Sebastian is the patron saint of Nancy; he was invoked against the plague that broke out in 1630 and which caused the death of the artist?s father, in 1631. This event might be the reason why the artist realized this work. The saint is depicted pierced by arrows, in the middle of what resembles a theatre wing, realized with the use of classical elements of ancient Rome: the Colosseum on the left, a round temple on the right and, in the background, the hill of Campidoglio with the Trajan and Antonine?s columns, the arches of Titus and Settimio Severo, some souvenirs of Callot?s Roman stay (1608-1612). This is considered one of the masterpieces of the Nancy artist. Lieure 670, I/II; Daniel Ternois in Jacques Callot 1592-1635, pp. 483/5, 637. Dimensioni 327x161.

        Florida et Regiones Vicinae

De Laët published this map as part of his book Nieuwe Wereldt ofte Beschrijvinghe van West-Indien.Cumming #34; Imago Mundi, VI, pp. 61-62.

This design proved confusing to some later copiers, who dispensed with the mainland in their renditions while mistakenly retaining the smaller "Bermuda" as a small island off the coast of Bermuda.Palmer, M. Maps of Bermuda, p. 10.

Fresco e marginoso esemplare, molto ben conservato.
