De Franchis Vincenzo
Nicola Pezzana, Domenico Tarini. [Click Below for Full Description]

1628 - Abissinorumregnum: Abissinorum Sive Pretiosi Ioannis Imperium Petrus Kaerius Caelavit. (Abyssinia / Ethiopia / Nubia / Somalia / East Africa / etc.). Issued Amsterdam, 1628 by J. Janssonius for Mercator's Atlas Minor. Engraved by van der Keere or A. Goos. Latin text on verso as issued. The legendary and mythical Kingdom of Prestor John in central Africa. Fine and appealing early 17th century map. With what appears to be early or old hand color, possibly original. A scarce map, newly re-engraved from earlier versions issued for Mercator, and thus a variant to others of a similar title. In near VG or better condition, minor light surface age wear and toning as typical, some faint minor foxing in the blank margins, overall the image is clean, well preserved and very attractive. Sheet measures c. 9" x 6 7/8". Koeman 194, Atlantes Neerlandici: "This is the first of a series of entirely new editions. The maps are engraved by Van der Keere and A. Goos." The Dutch / Belgium maps are identical to those which appeared in the 1616 Niew Nederladtsch Caertboeck of Abraham Goos. Tooley's Dictionary of Mapmakers, v. 3, p. 238.[R12072]

1628. 4°, zonder omslag, (2)+5 pag.

Boudeaux leather-look hardcover with red leather-look paper on front and back. The spine shows the gilded title in the second of the five shields. The spine is slightly torn on the front side and is badly restored with white tape. The backboard seems to have been folded at some time. The contents of the book show some light foxing and finger stains, but is in good condition. Overall the book is in fair condition. 26 x 38 cm, [xxv] 1-22 34-64 [0] pp. With 40 illustrations by Gustave Doré, engraved by Pizan, Pannemaker, Pierdon, Breviére, Maurand, Boëtzel, Hérbert E. Deschamps, Bumont, Delduc and Fagnon."Charles Perrault (1628-1703) was a French author who laid the literary foundation for the fairy tale genre. As an opponent of Jean de la Fontaine and the other classicists, Perrault thought that modern literature was better and more valuable than classical literature. Although he still used animals as humans in his stories, they can be seen as folktales rather than fables. His best known stories contain Little Red Riding hood, Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty, which later on would be made immortal by Walt Disney. The engraved plates are designed by the French painter, sculptor and illustrator Gustave Doré (1832-1883). Doré is well known for his illustrative contribution to many classic stories like Cervantes's Don Quixote and Poe's the Raven. They have a distinct romantic style. B2352"
