Nichols, Philip
London, 1628. [6],80pp. Small quarto. Modern tooled calf in contemporary style by Middleton, leather label. Titlepage in expert facsimile. Some dust soiling and toning. Else very good. The second edition, after the first of 1626, of this account of Francis Drake's highly successful raid against the Spanish in Panama in 1572-73, one of his early Caribbean raids of plunder and harassment. Sabin states of this edition: "It differs from that of 1626 in having had the advantage of the incorporation of the errata of the latter date under the personal superintendence of the nephew of the great voyager. The last four leaves are larger than the rest of the book." The expedition of fifty-two Englishmen attempted to seize the Nombre de Dios but were repulsed when Drake was wounded in the shoulder. After many reversals and hardships the British managed to waylay an entire pack train of Peruvian silver, bringing home a fortune. Drake's bold move was approved by Queen Elizabeth, who shared in the plunder, but the politics of his raid on Spain during a period of ostensible peace made it necessary for him to disappear to Ireland for several years after the event. Besides his success in plunder, on this expedition Drake became the first Englishman to see the Pacific Ocean. The book was originally written in a manuscript account of the expedition given to Queen Elizabeth on New Year's Day 1593. In his letter of presentation which serves as the introduction to the book, Drake suggests that, while it is pleasant to think of past victories, he would rather be undertaking new employment … [Click Below for Full Description]

The dedicatory plate and 52 of the emblems are the work of Oliviero Gatti (fl. 1610-1630), also a disciple of Valesio. The remaining plates were the work of Bolognese engraver Agostino Parisini (fl. 1625-1639) after designs by Florio Macchio, a pupil of Ludovico Carracci (1555-1619). Maccio's emblem book was celebrated in its time for its exceptionally fine and curious engravings, many of which depicted contemporary life in early Italian society. GAGLIANO, Marca da 1582-1643
1628. "La Flora, o vero Il natal de' fiori (Flora, or The Birth of Flowers) is an opera in a prologue and five acts composed by Marco da Gagliano and Jacopo Peri to a libretto by Andrea Salvadori. It was first performed on 14 October 1628 at the Teatro Mediceo in Florence to celebrate the marriage of Margherita de' Medici and Odoardo Farnese, Duke of Parma... Based on the story of Chloris and Zephyrus in Book V of Ovid's Fasti, Salvadori's libretto contains many allegorical references to the transfer of political power, the beauty of Tuscany, and the strength of the Medici dynasty. The score of La Flora is one of only two still in existence out of Gagliano's 14 published stage works. Several of its arias are still performed as concert pieces." Wikipedia. "As maestro di cappella for nearly 35 years to the grand duke of Tuscany and of Florence Cathedral (S Maria del Fiore), [Gagliano] was one of the most important Italian musicians of the period. His Dafne (1608) is a milestone in the early history of opera, and his secular madrigals and monodies and many sacred works in various genres, though now little known, were much acclaimed in the first half of the 17th century." Edward Strainchamps in Grove Music Online. Alfonso Parigi the Younger (1606-1656 was a noted Italian architect and engraver.. 188 x 286 mm. With "Avviso di Mercurio a Berecintia dea della Terra, et alle Ninfe de Campi" printed below image. [BIBLE - N.T., Greek]
Sedani, [i.e. Sedan]: Ex Typographia & Typis Novissimis Joannis Jannoni, 1628. [Colophon Dated 1629) [2], 3-571pp, [1]. Finely bound in contemporary English navy morocco, gilt. Marbled endpapers, A.E.G. Very slight rubbing to extremities. Rust-spot to CC7, small paper flaw to MM1, each causing slight loss to text. With the ink inscription 'Isaak Chauncy, 1656/57', in red ink to colophon, further ink inscriptions 'E. Libris Elia. Mason, Const., 13s 6d, 1697' and 'W.H. Everard, Dec 21st 1823' to front endpapers and blank fly-leaves. A handsomely bound copy of 'The smallest Greek Testament ever printed, with the exception of Pickering's miniature edition of 1828' (Darlow and Moule). Isaak Chauncy, perhaps the English congregationalist minister (1632-1712) and son of early Harvard President and Puritan, Charles Chauncy (1592-1671). The younger Chauncy had returned from New England in the early 1650s, after graduating Harvard, to complete his studies at Oxford. His position in the Church of England was short-lived: presented with the living of Woodborough by Oliver Cromwell, he was swiftly ejected by the 1662 Act of Uniformity. The remainder of his life was spent leading dissenting congregations at Andover and later St. Mary Axe, where he was succeeded by Isaac Watts, and publishing a wealth of non-conformist texts and replies.
