CIRUELO, Pedro
[Click Below for Full Description]

Hugo, Herman; Christopher van Sichem, illus.
Typis Henrici Aertssenii, 1628. Painstakingly pirated version of one of the most influential of the Dutch emblem books and => one of the most charming, with Hugo's morals, written in a combination of Latin verse and prose, accompanying => 46 full-page woodcut illustrations by Christopher van Sichem (numbered 0-45), each with a Bible quotation below. The Jesuit author (1588-1629) designed this devotional volume to follow the three stages of mystical life and meditation: purification (here, Book I: "Gemitus animae poenitentis"), illumination (II: "Vota animae sanctae"), and union (III: "Suspiria animae amantis"). Amsterdam publisher P.I. Paets commissioned the woodcuts, done after the copper engravings by Boetius a Bolswert for the 1624 first edition, later using or sharing them least three more times. Additionally, the volume offers a fine woodcut illustrated title-page, the woodcut coat of arms of Urban VIII, three sectional woodcut architectural title-pages, and in-text woodcut initials and tailpieces. Binding: 18th-century brown morocco, spine with gilt title-label, raised bands accented with gilt hashing, and compartments containing gilt daisy stamps, corner ornaments, and ruling; covers framed in gilt triple fillets, board edges with gilt zigzag roll. Marbled endapers, all edges marbled, blue ribbon place marker. Provenance: From the library of American collector Albert A. Howard, small booklabel ("AHA") at rear; evidence of removed bookplate on front pastedown and very faded word in an early hand on title-page margin.

Lisbon, Jorge Rodriguez for Antonio Gonsalvez, 1628. Large 4to. 2 vols. (7), 208 ff. (5), 238 ff. Title vignettes (royal arms of Portugal). Uniform mottled calf with giltstamped red and green spine labels. All edges yellow. Second edition of the first two of the three "Decades" on Portugal's Middle Eastern enterprises (a fourth volume was produced posthumously in 1615, and the set was continued by other hands). "This is considered by Du Fresnoy as being a good edition" (Clarke, The Progress of Maritime Discovery, p. 132). The writer de Barros (1496-1570), head agent for the Portuguese overseas trade authority "Casa da Índia", managed to persuade King João III to commission from him a history of the Portuguese in India (including Asia and southeast Africa). The result, published between 1552 and 1563, earned him renown as one of the first great Portuguese historians, and the the title of a "Portuguese Livy". The 'Decades' contain "the early history of the Portuguese in India and Asia and reveal careful study of Eastern historians and geographers, as well as of the records of his own country. They are distinguished by clearness of exposition and orderly arrangement. They are also lively accounts" (Enc. Britannica). Books 2 and 3 of the "Decada Segunda" (fols. 21 ff.) offer a detailed narrative of Afonso de Albuquerque's expedition to the Arabian Gulf and his conquest of Ormuz in 1507; the island remained under Portuese occupation from 1515 to 1622. As vassals of the Portuguese state, the Kingdom of Ormuz jointly participated in the 1521 invasion of Bahrain that ended Jabrid r … [Click Below for Full Description]

De Bry, Johann Theodor.
Frankfurt, Erasmus Kempffer, 1601-1628. Folio (220 x 317 mm). 12 books bound in 4 volumes. With 10 engr. title pages, 252 engraved illustrations, 3 engr. views, 17 engr. maps, and 3 armorial engravings. Bound at the end are 5 extra maps and views (including a world map and a view of Jerusalem) from Marino Sanuto's 1611 "Liber secretorum fidelium crucis". Slightly later Spanish limp vellum with ms. title to spine. Ties. All twelve books of Théodore de Bry's "Petits Voyages", the greatest single collection of material on early voyages to the East Indies and considered unique in its extraordinary wealth of cartographical and visual material on Africa, India, and South Asia. Notably, book seven includes Gasparo Balbi's groundbreaking account of the Middle East, first published in 1590 as "Viaggio dell' Indie Orientali" - a mere 16 years before this present issue, making this the second appearance in print altogether and the first Latin translation. Balbi, a Venetian jewel merchant, travelled extensively in the Arabian Peninsula in search of precious stones. From Venice he sailed for Aleppo, proceeding to Bir and from there overland to Baghdad, descending the Tigris to Basra, where he embarked for India. While in the Persian Gulf, he studied the pearl industry, noting that the best pearls were to be found at Bahrain and Julfar. He refers to islands in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi (including Sir Bani Yas and Das) and to several coastal settlements that were to become permanently established, such as Dubai and Ras al Khaima. Balbi was the first to record the place names along the coas … [Click Below for Full Description]

LAMBE, JOHN
Printed in Amsterdam, 1628 [but London: Printed by J. Barker for J. Sturt, circa 1810], 1628. A type-facsimile edition. See A. T. Hazen, "J. Sturt, Facsimilist" in The Library, June 1944, pages 72-79; noted under Lowndes, page 1301, who states "forty-four copies struck off.". Some foxing, particularly to the first two blank leaves; very good copy.. 4to, modern half calf, marbled paper boards, black morocco label, gilt lettering. Woodcut pictorial title-page. One of several (Hazen records 17) type-facsimiles of old pamphlets and tracts produced by bookseller J. Sturt, in a manner popular at the time and famously practiced by antiquaries such as Joseph Haslewood and Egerton Brydges. This life of John Lambe (1545-1628) recounts his strange story as a sorcerer, magician and astrologer who was killed by a mob in June 1628. See the DNB. This copy, like many examples, does not have an imprint at the foot of the final page of text, which has led some cataloguers and booksellers over the years to mistake copies for the original of 1628. But there is a telltale sign in the type used in the text: it is Caslon.

Mercator, Gerardus
1628. 13.5 x 19 cm.
