Jean de Tournes, (Genève), 1628. Plein vélin rigide du vingtième siècle. In-12 (14,7x7,9 cm) de 202-(2) pages Amorces de fentes des mors en tête. Papier bruni. L'or obtenu résista à toutes les épreuves. [Click Below for Full Description]

He refers to islands in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi (including Sir Bani Yas and Das) and to several coastal settlements that were to become permanently established, such as Dubai and Ras al Khaima. Scarce second edition of the first "Decade" volume of João de Barros Asia, a notable and one of the best historical compilation related with the first Portuguese world exploits and the "Age of Discovery" during the late 15th and early 16th centuries. The first "Decade" volume is crucial work for the study of the first Portuguese explorers and explorations (mainly in Africa and Asia). Barros' First Decade contains early descriptions of African tribes and kingdoms. It accounts for the Islamic presence in North Africa, and Asia and accounts for the military campaigns between the moors of north Africa and the Portuguese. Barros´s describes the first European sea voyage to India, the first European encounters in India, diplomatic negotiations and military campaigns, wars against Muslim states in Asia, the discovery of Brazil, Colombo's negotiations with the D. João II, the kingdom of Pegu (Birmania), Ormuz, and so on. João De Barros (1496-1570), was a scholar and erudite in various areas, but it was as a historian that he gained higher projection. Barros' Asia was a result of a life effort and constitutes his main work achievement. Using the same model of the great Roman historian Titus Livius, Barros' divided his "Asia" in three "Decades" (a fourth Decade was finished and published many years after João de Barros' death). The first Decade was published in 1552, the second "Decade" in 1553, third in 1563, and the fourth Decade, published in 1615 (many years after Barros' death and partly by a different author). Small 8vo. [32 Preface], [6], 249 pp., 1 steel engraved frontispiece, supple vellum from 18th century, soiled with light wear, the date on the title frontispiece has been modified by hand, light browning of pages throughout, sporadic foxing, small water stains, hand-written note on front endpaper in pencil, small tear on front endpaper, copy in general good condition otherwise, from the Library of Gancia (the auction house’s invoice dated 1872, catalogue no 254 loosely inserted), l'Imprimerie de Robert Estienne, second rare and augmented edition./ In defiance of all rules, the action of Tyr et Sidon proceeds alternately in Tyre where Belcar, prince of Sidon, is a prisoner, and in Sidon where Léonte, prince of Tyre, is a prisoner and pursues his gallant adventures. The play, which was divided into two days and ten acts, had a complicated plot and contained 5000 lines "[each day is divided in five acts in verse, with a preface by F. O. P., i.e. Franc ois Ogier Parisien]". It required an immense stage on which the two towns were represented, with a field in between, where the contests took place. Tyr et Sidon is noteworthy as an attempt to introduce the liberty of the Spanish and English drama into France, thus anticipating the romantic revolt of the 19th century. It is reprinted in the 8th volume of the Ancien Théâtre français. Schélandre was also the author of a Stuartide (1611), and of Les Sept Excellents Travaux de la pénitence de Saint Pierre (1636). Jean de Schélandre studied at the University of Paris. He then joined Turenne's army in the Netherlands, where he gained ra … [Click Below for Full Description]

This edition of the works of Ambroise Paré is the first critical edition and features incredible illustrations of animals including giant ducks, fictional animals such as mermaids and unicorns (p. 796), and deformed humans and animals such as Siamese twins and three-headed sheep (p.1034). Other figures include elephants, rhinos, cheetahs, giant fish, and octopuses. This work reports Paré’s experiments that tested the effects of bezoar stones, which had, to this point, been thought to cure the effects of poisoning. LAMBE, JOHN
Printed in Amsterdam, 1628 [but London: Printed by J. Barker for J. Sturt, circa 1810], 1628. A type-facsimile edition. See A. T. Hazen, "J. Sturt, Facsimilist" in The Library, June 1944, pages 72-79; noted under Lowndes, page 1301, who states "forty-four copies struck off.". Boards and edges rubbed; text a little foxed; very good copy.. 4to, modern half calf, marbled paper boards, gilt lettering. Woodcut pictorial title-page. One of several (Hazen records 17) type-facsimiles of old pamphlets and tracts produced by bookseller J. Sturt, in a manner popular at the time and famously practiced by antiquaries such as Joseph Haslewood and Egerton Brydges. This life of John Lambe (1545-1628) recounts his strange story as a sorcerer, magician and astrologer who was killed by a mob in June 1628. See the DNB. This copy, like many examples, does not have an imprint at the foot of the final page of text, which has led some cataloguers and booksellers over the years to mistake copies for the original of 1628. But there is a telltale sign in the type used in the text: it is Caslon. Early annotation about this volume on the front free endpaper.
