Scherer¬ís world atlas, the Atlas Novus, first published in Munich between 1702 and 1710 and reissued in a second edition between 1730 and 1737, forms a singularly unusual, almost revolutionary work in terms of the development of European mapmaking at the beginning of the 18th Century. Very short tear to upper joint at foot of spine, a few small wormholes along the spine, corners somewhat rubbed, a touch of soiling, but a very sound binding, entirely unsophisticated, and quite pleasing to the eye; a few pages with creases affecting readability, a little scattered browning and the occasional blemish, otherwise a very good, clean copy internally. An altogether pleasing volume. In a finely gilt, unsophisticated contempoary binding, this volume contains the work of two classic authors--the Roman statesman, philosopher, and dramatist Seneca the Younger, and his father, the rhetorician known as Seneca the Elder. The Younger, Lucius Annaeus Seneca (ca. 1 B.C.-65 A.D.), has the unusual distinction of being popular with both the Medieval church--which believed him to be a Roman convert to Chrisitianity, perhaps by Saint Paul himself--and with Renaissance humanists like Erasmus. Among his works are numerous philosophical dialogues (many of which are reproduced here) that certainly would have appealed to the Christian mind, … [Click Below for Full Description]

GAGLIANO, Marca da 1582-1643
1628. 188 x 286 mm. Slightly worn and browned; central vertical crease flattened; trimmed; hinged at upper corners of verso. "La Flora, o vero Il natal de' fiori (Flora, or The Birth of Flowers) is an opera in a prologue and five acts composed by Marco da Gagliano and Jacopo Peri to a libretto by Andrea Salvadori. It was first performed on 14 October 1628 at the Teatro Mediceo in Florence to celebrate the marriage of Margherita de' Medici and Odoardo Farnese, Duke of Parma... Based on the story of Chloris and Zephyrus in Book V of Ovid's Fasti, Salvadori's libretto contains many allegorical references to the transfer of political power, the beauty of Tuscany, and the strength of the Medici dynasty. The score of La Flora is one of only two still in existence out of Gagliano's 14 published stage works. Several of its arias are still performed as concert pieces." Wikipedia. "As maestro di cappella for nearly 35 years to the grand duke of Tuscany and of Florence Cathedral (S Maria del Fiore), [Gagliano] was one of the most important Italian musicians of the period. His Dafne (1608) is a milestone in the early history of opera, and his secular madrigals and monodies and many sacred works in various genres, though now little known, were much acclaimed in the first half of the 17th century." Edward Strainchamps in Grove Music Online. Alfonso Parigi the Younger (1606-1656 was a noted Italian architect and engraver.

HUGO, Herman
H. Aertssen, Antwerp, 1628. Small 8vo, pp. [xxx], 456, [2] imprimaturs; pagination including woodcut titlepage, full page arms of Pope Urban VIII and 46 full-page woodcut emblems; bound in 17th century vellum; Second edition of this very popular emblem book, with particularly fine illustrations, which were never reused. The emblems were based on Boetius à Bolswert's engravings in the first edition (1624, also produced by Aertssen at Antwerp), but Van Sichem's wood-engravings are infinitely more attractive. Equally striking are the frames to the sectional title-pages and the large ornamental tailpieces taken from Peter Flotner. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Franck, Melchior.

1628. Madrid. Imprenta Real. 4to, (194 x 135 mm). 10 ff., 78 ff. Early 20thcentury brown calf over marbled. Boards, spine lettered and tooled in gilt. Fine copy, with only scattered foxing.- Early and revised edition, by Antonio Zapata, General Inquisitor of Spain, of this important guide compiled by the Secretary of the Council of the Spanish Inquisition, providing the exact formulae to be used in cases tried by the Inquisition feared both in the Peninsula and the American territories, where it had jurisdiction since the mid 16thcentury. A fundamental work for the understanding of the judicial process of the Inquisition: the Inquisitors were obliged to record in writing the proceedings, the torture applied, remarks and comments of the people under questioning, their clothing and other possessions, etc. This edition also contains a vocabulary at the beginning, which helps understanding the contents of the book. It is in fact a demystifying book, as it outlines the procedures in careful detail, breaking so to speak the common understanding of how the inquisitorial process happened; in fact, it was a far less cruel process that it's Roman counterpart, torture could only be applied in very specific cases, when other methods had been exhausted, no serious or irreversible damaged could be caused, a doctor needed to be present to oversee it, no women or child could be subject to torture, etc. So systematic and organized, that even a maximum of time was imposed. The institution was given jurisdiction and form in the late 15thcentury partly in response for the need … [Click Below for Full Description]
