DRAKE Sir Francis; NICHOLS Philip
1628. Second edition. Engraved portrait vignette on the titlepage. Small 4to. Modern crimson calf, old style, gilt. [viii], 80pp. London, Nicholas Bourne, The second edition, after the first of 1626, of this account of Francis Drake's highly successful raid against the Spanish in Panama in 1572-73, one of his early Caribbean raids of plunder and harassment. Sabin states of this edition: ?It differs from that of 1626 in having had the advantage of the incorporation of the errata of the latter date under the personal superintendence of the nephew of the great voyager. The last four leaves are larger than the rest of the book.? The expedition of fifty-two Englishmen attempted to seize Nombre de Dios, but were repulsed when Drake was wounded in the shoulder. After many reversals and hardships, the British managed to waylay an entire pack train of Peruvian silver, bringing home a fortune. Drake's bold move was approved by Queen Elizabeth, who shared in the plunder, but the politics of his raid on Spain during a period of ostensible peace made it necessary for him to disappear to Ireland for several years after the event. Besides his success in plunder, on this expedition Drake became the first Englishman to see the Pacific Ocean. CHAR(13) + CHAR(10) CHAR(13) + CHAR(10) The book was originally written in a manuscript account of the expedition given to Queen Elizabeth on New Year's Day 1593. In his letter of presentation which serves as the introduction to the book, Drake suggests that, while it is pleasant to think of past victories, he would rather be undertaking new employment … [Click Below for Full Description]

Poitiers, Julian Thoereau and window of Antoine Mesnier, 1628. Five parts in one vol, folio (355 x 225 mm), with engraved coat-of-arms on general title, one engraving in text, and 15 engraved plates (including engraved titles) on 12 leaves (for collation details see below); some corners crumpled, paper repair on lower margin of one leaf and at foot and gutter of another, occasional incidental stains but a large, fresh, honest copy in contemporary limp vellum, with remains of ties.First edition, first issue (see below) a great Wunderkammer book of great rarity. The first work, a commentary on Dioscorides, was written by Jacques (who died in 1588) and revised for publication by his son Paul. The text is devoted to the most remarkable plants, animals, spices, minerals, and natural wonders and oddities mentioned by Dioscorides, with a commentary on their unusual features and properties. The frontispiece and plate illustrate 120 of these different specimens, and are keyed with a page number referring to the text. These finely engraved vignettes have the quality of emblems, which is enhanced by the emblematic 'devices', brief verses in French accompanying the text entries. It is stated that Contant was also the designer of the plates. The Dioscorides commentary serves as an introduction to the second wo … [Click Below for Full Description]

STROBELBERGER, Johann Stephan
1628. 1 p.l., 109 pp. Small 8vo, attractive antique calf (minor browning). Leipzig: E. Rehefeldt & J. Gros, 1628.First edition and quite rare. According to Waring, Bibliotheca Therapeutica, this is the earliest work on mastic, the resin that exudes from the lentisk (Pistacia lentiscus), an evergreen shrub found mainly in the Mediterranean coast region. Mastic has had many medicinal uses since antiquity; it contains antioxidants and has antibacterial and antifungal properties. In earlier times, it was supposedly a cure for snakebite, and Hippocrates wrote that mastic was good for digestive problems and the prevention of colds. It has also been used in ointments for skin diseases.Today, mastic is used to treat stomach and intestinal ulcers, breathing problems, muscle aches, and bacterial and fungal infections. It is also used to improve blood circulation and in the production of chewing gum.Fine copy.❧ Waring, p. 558.
