(Virginia)
v.p. [Bristol, England; Martin's Hundred, Virginia]: 1628-early 20th century. 12mo. "I was married to Anne Loveing ... the 28th day of octob. 1666 at Martins hundred in Virginia" Manuscript family record book of the Thruston family of Bristol and Virginia, with early family records concerning Martin's Hundred, Virginia, a plantation on the north shore of the James River first settled in 1638. The genealogical portion of the manuscript is largely transcribed in a series of articles in the William and Mary Quarterly (vols. IV, nos. 1-4 & vol. V, nos. 1-2, 1895-6) which opens with this assessment: "Probably one of the most interesting and satisfactory family records preserves in American is that of the Thruston family. This family came to Virginia from the city of Bristol, which contributed so much to the settlement of Virginia." The manuscript was then in the possession of Dr. John Thruston of Louisville, grandson of Col. Charles Mynn Thurston of the Revolutionary War. The manuscript opens with an "Epistle Dedicatory" dated 25 October 1628 by one Abell Louering, addressed to Robert Rogers, Esq., whose wife was present at the baptism of John Thruston's son John. The manuscript then passes to John Thurston, Chamberlain of Bristol (1606-1675), son of Malachias Thurston of Wellington. Thurston had 16 children with his first wife, Thomasine Rich. Their various births, deaths and marriages recorded here, including the birth of son Edward in 1638 who would emigrate to Virginia. John Thruston has also recorded dates and events around the restoration of Charles II: "The first May 1660 … [Click Below for Full Description]

Chez Pierre Rammasein (1628) Outside covers are in fair/good - solid - but outer spine has been stripped - you can see early writing on the spine. Large sized hardcover. Two bookplates - one stripped. The first third of the book had the pages restored however it does not seem it was done recently and it was done very well. Amazing book. John Napier was a famous Scottish mathematician who is best known for his invention of logarithms which are used to help with mathematical calculations. He is also credited with bringing the decimal point into common use. AMAZING HISTORIC PIECE.

HELVICUS (Christophe).
Francofurti, typis Matthaei Kempfferi, 1628. in-plano. 4ff. XLIII. 4ff.

I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. One of the most famous books on the history of artillery! Diego Ufano was a 16th-century Spanish historian of military warfare and artillery. His most important contribution to the subject was his work 'Artillerie' which features details on 16th-century guns and ammunition. His notes and observations on gunmen were far beyond their time, not only that, they are incredibly informative to the styles of warfare tactics used centuries ago. This book provides step-by-step tutorials on how to clean, load, aim, and fire muzzle-loading firearms - all to the beat of a drummer's drumroll. It also describes how to move cannons up a mountain, manufacturing and building, and details on ammunition trajectory. It also includes use of cannons in the Philippines, China, and Tartary. This exquisite 1628 French edition is illustrated with utterly fascinating engravings of cannons and all its parts, cannon balls and ammunition, trebuchets, castles and forts, and much more. This edition was translated into French out of the original Spanish by Johann Teodor de Bry.

Antique print, titled: 'Typus Totius Orbis Terraquei Geographice Delineatus, Et Ad Usum Globo Materiali Superinducendus' - Beautiful example of Scherer's map of the World, configured in 12 globe gores. Heinrich Scherer (1628-1704) was a Professor of Hebrew, Mathematics and Ethics at the University of Dillingen until about 1680. Thereafter he obtained important positions as Official Tutor to the Royal Princes of Mantua and Bavaria. It was during his time in Munich as Tutor to the Princely house of Bavaria that his lifetime’s work as a cartographer received acclaim and recognition. Scherer’s world atlas, the Atlas Novus, first published in Munich between 1702 and 1710 and reissued in a second edition between 1730 and 1737, forms a singularly unusual, almost revolutionary work in terms of the development of European mapmaking at the beginning of the 18th Century. Condition: Good, given age. A few tiny unobtrusive spots. Light diagonal crease on the right. Original folds as issued. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully. Storage location: BG-B6-13 Iscra The overall size is ca. 16.2 x 10.7 inch. The image size is ca. 13.7 x 8.5 inch. The overall size … [Click Below for Full Description]

GODWIN, Francis
I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Francis Godwin was a 16th-century English historian most known for his book "Annales of England" which was first published under the title "Rerum Anglicarum Henrico VIII...Annales. SENECA (THE YOUNGER)
Amsterodami: Apud G. I. Caesium (Blaeu), 1628. In a finely gilt, unsophisticated contempoary binding, this volume contains the work of two classic authors--the Roman statesman, philosopher, and dramatist Seneca the Younger, and his father, the rhetorician known as Seneca the Elder. The Younger, Lucius Annaeus Seneca (ca. 1 B.C.-65 A.D.), has the unusual distinction of being popular with both the Medieval church--which believed him to be a Roman convert to Chrisitianity, perhaps by Saint Paul himself--and with Renaissance humanists like Erasmus. Among his works are numerous philosophical dialogues (many of which are reproduced here) that certainly would have appealed to the Christian mind, including essays with titles such as "On Anger," "On Providence," and "On the Shortness of Life." Seneca the Elder (ca. 54 B.C.-39 A.D.) was primarily a rhetorician who wrote about the great orators and his musings on invented legal cases. His works, especially during the Middle Ages, were often conflated with those of his son. The present volume would have been intended for scholastic use, but the pocket in which it resided in the 17th century must have belonged to a student or scholar of considerable means, given the elaborate degree to which the book has been decorated with gilt.. 128 x 72 mm.
