Mendes, Afonso, and Paez, Gaspar.]
l'Herede di Bartolomeo Zannetti, Roma, 1628. "Jesuit Missions in Ethiopia". Small 8vo. Contemporary vellum. First edition: a collection of reports to Vitelleschi, the Jesuit general in Rome, from the Jesuit mission in Ethiopia, comprising two letters from Gaspar Paez (1624-25, pp. 396, and 1625-26, pp. 173-232) and one from Mendez (1626, pp. 97-172). A French translation followed in 1629. The public submission to Rome of the Ethiopian Emperor Susneyos in 1622 was one of the greatest triumphs of the Jesuits' overseas missions and was largely due to the tact and patience of the Spanish Jesuit, Pedro Páez, who died shortly afterwards. The attempts of Afonso Mendes, the Portuguese Jesuit who arrived in 1625 as patriarch of Ethiopia, to broaden conformity to Roman Catholicism provoked much popular discontent, which finally convinced Susneyos, despite his personal beliefs and Mendes's opposition but fearful of a general insurrection, to proclaim the restoration of the traditional practices of the Ethiopian church. Susneyos seems to have intended to permit freedom of conscience to both communions, but after his death (1632), his son and successor, Fasilidas, expelled the Jesuits, first from the capital and, in 1634, from Ethiopia altogether. The few that remained were hunted down, among them the Portuguese Gaspar Páez, author of much of the present Lettere annue, who was martyred in 1635. *Sommervogel V885; Streit XVI2719. v.p. [Bristol, England; Martin's Hundred, Virginia]: 1628-early 20th century. 12mo. "I was married to Anne Loveing ... the 28th day of octob. 1666 at Martins hundred in Virginia" Manuscript family record book of the Thruston family of Bristol and Virginia, with early family records concerning Martin's Hundred, Virginia, a plantation on the north shore of the James River first settled in 1638. The genealogical portion of the manuscript is largely transcribed in a series of articles in the William and Mary Quarterly (vols. IV, nos. 1-4 & vol. V, nos. 1-2, 1895-6) which opens with this assessment: "Probably one of the most interesting and satisfactory family records preserves in American is that of the Thruston family. This family came to Virginia from the city of Bristol, which contributed so much to the settlement of Virginia." The manuscript was then in the possession of Dr. John Thruston of Louisville, grandson of Col. Charles Mynn Thurston of the Revolutionary War. The manuscript opens with an "Epistle Dedicatory" dated 25 October 1628 by one Abell Louering, addressed to Robert Rogers, Esq., whose wife was present at the baptism of John Thruston's son John. The manuscript then passes to John Thurston, Chamberlain of Bristol (1606-1675), son of Malachias Thurston of Wellington. Thurston had 16 children with his first wife, Thomasine Rich. Their various births, deaths and marriages recorded here, including the birth of son Edward in 1638 who would emigrate to Virginia. John Thruston has also recorded dates and events around the restoration of Charles II: "The first May 1660 … [Click Below for Full Description]

HELVICUS (Christophe).
Francofurti, typis Matthaei Kempfferi, 1628. in-plano. 4ff. XLIII. 4ff.

I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. One of the most famous books on the history of artillery! Diego Ufano was a 16th-century Spanish historian of military warfare and artillery. His most important contribution to the subject was his work 'Artillerie' which features details on 16th-century guns and ammunition. His notes and observations on gunmen were far beyond their time, not only that, they are incredibly informative to the styles of warfare tactics used centuries ago. This book provides step-by-step tutorials on how to clean, load, aim, and fire muzzle-loading firearms - all to the beat of a drummer's drumroll. It also describes how to move cannons up a mountain, manufacturing and building, and details on ammunition trajectory. It also includes use of cannons in the Philippines, China, and Tartary. This exquisite 1628 French edition is illustrated with utterly fascinating engravings of cannons and all its parts, cannon balls and ammunition, trebuchets, castles and forts, and much more. This edition was translated into French out of the original Spanish by Johann Teodor de Bry.

GODWIN, Francis
I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Francis Godwin was a 16th-century English historian most known for his book "Annales of England" which was first published under the title "Rerum Anglicarum Henrico VIII...Annales. This book on early English history primarily deals with King Henry VIII and his two children Edward VI and Queen Mary. Godwin composed this book to pose the English Tudor monarchs in high esteem with good character. This 1628 Latin edition follows a chronological timeline throughout the 16th-century beginning with 1508 through 1558 and the rise of Queen Elizabeth. A fine second edition, printed by Thomas Harper.
