GAGLIANO, Marca da 1582-1643
1628 - 188 x 286 mm. With "Avviso di Mercurio a Berecintia dea della Terra, et alle Ninfe de Campi" printed below image. Slightly worn and browned; central vertical crease flattened; trimmed; hinged at upper corners of verso. "La Flora, o vero Il natal de' fiori (Flora, or The Birth of Flowers) is an opera in a prologue and five acts composed by Marco da Gagliano and Jacopo Peri to a libretto by Andrea Salvadori. It was first performed on 14 October 1628 at the Teatro Mediceo in Florence to celebrate the marriage of Margherita de' Medici and Odoardo Farnese, Duke of Parma. Based on the story of Chloris and Zephyrus in Book V of Ovid's Fasti, Salvadori's libretto contains many allegorical references to the transfer of political power, the beauty of Tuscany, and the strength of the Medici dynasty. The score of La Flora is one of only two still in existence out of Gagliano's 14 published stage works. Several of its arias are still performed as concert pieces." Wikipedia"As maestro di cappella for nearly 35 years to the grand duke of Tuscany and of Florence Cathedral (S Maria del Fiore), [Gagliano] was one of the most important Italian musicians of the period. His Dafne (1608) is a milestone in the early history of opera, and his secular madrigals and monodies and many sacred works in various genres, though now little known, were much acclaimed in the first half of the 17th century." Edward Strainchamps in Grove Music Online.Alfonso Parigi the Younger (1606-1656 was a noted Italian architect and engraver.

Ovid; Sandys, George (translator)
London: Printed by Robert Young, 1628. First complete twelvemo edition of George Sandys' English translation of Ovid's Metamorphosis, the great Roman epic of transformation, pirated from the authorized 1626 folio edition. While not the earliest English translator of Ovid, Sandys was one of the most influential, his heroic couplets admired by Milton, Dryden, and Pope: "soule-lesse Phaeton, with blazing haire / Shot head-long through a long descent of Aire; / As when a falling starre glides through the skie, / Or seemes to fall to the deceived eye." Sandys had already translated the first five books of the Metamorphosis when he sailed to the New World as treasurer of the fledgling Virginia Company. He completed the next two books on the sea and the remainder in Virginia, making his Ovid the first major literary translation produced in the American colonies. His work on the Metamorphosis was punctuated by clashes with Native Americans, including one fight that left three hundred colonists dead; in his dedication to the poem, Sandys notes that "Warres and Tumults [brought] it to light in stead of the Muses." Upon Sandys's return, Charles I granted him the exclusive privilege to print his translation, which appeared in a handsome folio edition in 1626. The first five books, however, had already been registered, and this narrower right to copy was inherited by Robert Young. In 1628, Young published this unauthorized twelvemo edition of the complete Metamorphosis, in spite of the patent granted to Sandys, complete with an amusingly crude woodcut reproduction of the folio's engrave … [Click Below for Full Description]

Theology, BINDING,
Bonham Norton and John Bill / The Cambridge Univesity Printers, 1628, Hardcover, Book Condition: Good Condition. 12mo. The Common Prayer is published 1629 by Norton and Bill. The New Testament is 1628 by "the printers to the Universite" in Cambridge. The binding is embroidered with silver thread and coloured silk threads and shows foliage, flowers and birds. The edges are all gilt and stamped with a decorative pattern. The book does have some faults. One of the shared hinges is holding but a little weak. The edges and corners of the binding are somewhat worn and rubbed. Both title pages are quite chipped at the edges. There is a bit of a gap in the binding between the A and B section of The New Testament and so the A section has stood a little bit proud for a while and been a little worn at the edges. A delightful and scarce survival. Pictures of this item not already displayed here available upon request.

*-------* Second edition, the first in 1623, of this treaty of land surveying. The mathematician Jean Boulenger was one of the " Commissaires", with Etienne Pascal, Mydorge, Beaugrand, Herigone... named by Richelieu to examine the discovery of Morin. PARE, Ambroise
Paris, Nicolas Buon, 1628. ______ Format : In-folio. J. Doe, A bibliography of the works of Ambroise Paré 37. Ex-libris manuscrit de l'époque A. Morand sur le titre. *-------* Illustrated by 373 charming woodcuts. Good edition, the last one in Paris (The latter editions in Lyon are of poor quality). Contempory calf binding restored at head and bottom of spine, still a very good copy.

THIBAULT, Girard - Saloman SAVERY (1594-1678)
[Leiden: B. & A. Elzevir, 1628. Copper engraving by Saloman Savery. Very good condition. A fine print from the most sumptuous book on fencing ever produced, which combines a strong design sense with beauty and historical importance, executed by one of the greatest engravers of the day. The image illustrates Thibault's theories of successful fencing using movement and mathematical principles. Thibault's work was produced during a period when the Italian rapier (or epee) held sway. "The Italians discovered the effectiveness of the dexterous use of the point rather than the edge of the sword. By the end of the 16th century, their lighter weapon...and simple, nimble, and controlled fencing style, emphasizing skill and speed rather than force, spread throughout Europe. Most of the wrestling tricks [used in earlier disciplines] were abandoned, the lunge was discovered, and fencing became established as an art" ( Encyclopaedia Britannica ). The present image marks the zenith of the use of the epee in Europe. "In the latter half of the 17th century, the sword and swordsmanship changed dramatically with a change in gentleman's dress. In France the court of Louis XIV set the fashion of silk stockings, breeches, and brocaded coats...As the long trailing rapier was unsuited to this form of dress, fashion decreed the wearing of a light, short court sword. The French style set in throughout Europe as the Italian had done earlier" (op. cit.). Cf. Vigeant p. 125; cf. Willems 302.

ANGHIERA, Peter Martyr d' (PETER MARTYR)
London: Printed for Michael Sparke, 1628. Inner margins of first few leaves strengthened; a few leaves shorter than others at lower margins but all correct and text untouched.. Small quarto, an attractive copy in a good old Morrell binding of panelled calf gilt, gilt edges. Extremely rare: the second edition of the first complete printing of Peter Martyr's Decades in English (or in fact in any vernacular language). The English text was prepared by Michael Lok (among other flourishes to his tricky career he was unfortunate to have been Frobisher's financial backer) from the Latin original. Richard Hakluyt's hand is apparent throughout as it was he that encouraged Lok to produce the translation, based on the Latin text that Hakluyt had himself published in 1587 for the good reason that the obscure 1530 Alcala original edition of the full text of the Decades, the only earlier full text, was even then so hard to find. "The first, and for many years the only, history of the New World. Hence its important position in the literature of American history; this being indeed in many respects the sole contemporary source of information concerning the discovery and conquest of America' (Church). King Ferdinand's councillor for Spain's affairs in the New World, Peter Martyr was the foremost chronicler of the New World in its earliest period, and the first writer to preach the importance of the discovery of America by his countryman Columbus. An Italian scholar, from 1487 living in Spain, he was for several years tutor to the children of Ferdinand and Isabella, and was a friend and contem … [Click Below for Full Description]

Sabin states of this edition: "It differs from that of 1626 in having had the advantage of the incorporation of the errata of the latter date under the personal superintendence of the nephew of the great voyager. The last four leaves are larger than the rest of the book." The expedition of fifty-two Englishmen attempted to seize Nombre de Dios, but were repulsed when Drake was wounded in the shoulder.
