Le blason des armoiries. (with) L' estat et comportement des armes. (with) Le tableau des armoiries de France.

chez Rolet Boutonne, au palais, a l'entree de la petite Galerie des prisonniers 1628 - Folio. Three vols in one pp. 1) pp. [xii], 197, [iii]. 2) pp. [iv], 95, [i]. 3) pp. [viii], 70, [ii]. Roman letter. First two titles in red and black, large engraved printer’s device on each, of two angels supporting the arms of Louis XIII, signed Picart on first, vol 1 with very numerous woodcut and engraved arms, vol two with woodcut arms and genealogical tables, small woodcut diagrams in text of third, all with fine floriated initials and head and tail-pieces. Light age yellowing, some leaves slightly browned, minor, light, marginal water-stains in places. Very good, clean, well margined copies, in contemporary limp vellum, slightly soiled, nibbled at edges in places, small stab hole in upper cover, upper edge a bit chewed. An excellent collection of three of the most important French works on heraldry, covering, between them all aspects of that art or science, all corrected and augmented and beautifully illustrated and printed. The first work by Bara concerns the history and tradition of heraldry starting with a general description of the forms in heraldry, with descriptions of the colours and form of arms and the use, meaning and history of the various symbols. The second part includes descriptions of the arms of a whole host of historical and mythical individuals, including Prester John, Alexander the Great, Hercules, and the arms of the Knights of the Round table, who were a significant element in medieval heraldry. (The identification of individuals from the Arthurian legends with particular arms is evidenced from as early as the 12th century, by the 15th century some 200 such arms had been attributed.) He also includes the arms of figures from the Old Testament, Greek and Roman mythology. The work ends with descriptions of the arms of the major houses of Europe and the high nobility of France. Scohier’s work, regarded as one of the best French heraldic treatises, also starts with a general description of the form of arms. It then elaborates a method of compiling genealogies and describes how arms are passed from generation to generation, with significant sections on the rights and laws of the wearing of arms. The final work by Moreau is prefaced by an interesting letter addressed to “La Noblesse Francoise” describing the importance of arms and their heritage to the nobility and royalty. In it describes succinctly the purpose of this work, “de rechercher les raisons des Armoiries tant principals, & substantielles, que parergues, & accessoires, comme de leurs Tymbres, Ordres, & Suports, & puis rebroussant iusqu’a leur premiere origine, tascher de desfricher, & descouvrir l’antiquite des plus grandes, & illustres.”. As stated he researches the first origins of the use of arms and discusses in length the meaning of each major aspect of the design of arms and their first use, their original significance and modern interpretation. It is probable that the three works were put together by the publisher or a contemporary bookseller as they are complementary in design and use and represent the periods best works on heraldry. Brunet states that they are sometimes found together in this form. (Brunet, Bara I 642). 1) BM STC Fr. C17th B192. Brunet, I 642. Graesse I 287. 2) BM STC Fr. C17th S 475. Brunet V 234.

        STATISTA REGNANTE

LIONE, 1628. In 16. Dim. 15x9 cm. Pp. 225. The work is a treaty of political precepts, very important for the political thought of XVII century. This essay gave more fortune to the author, from that moment he was considered the first political treaty writer of his time. The essay had the aim to teach to catholical princes the christian state reason against the bad reasons of state told by Machiavelli and Bodin. The model of the statist for Castiglione was represented by Emanuele I di Savoia, so much that contemporary historians stated that the same Savoia who wrote the book under the name of Castiglione. Salomons Recantation and Repentance: or, The Booke of Ecclesiastes briefly and fully explained.

London, John Haviland, for John Bartlet 1628. (8) 175 p. Rebound half Leather with ribbed back and decorated with stamps, 4° (some pages are fixed at the lower margins because of wormholes, at some places affecting the text. William Pemble c.1592-1623, was a puritan divine, born as a son of a clergyman. His father was poor, and his education was provided for by John Barker. After his graduation he removed to Magdalen Hall, where he became reader and tutor. He proceeded M.A. on 9 June 1618, took orders, and was made divinity reader of Magdalen Hall, a post which he filled with great distinction, being an able exponent of Calvinism, and famous as a preacher. He was loyal to the Anglican church, though anxious that the terms of conformity should be made easier to his party. His aquirements in various branches of learning were very remarkable. It would seem that his labours and studies exhausted his strenght and shortened his days. Pemble's works were all posthumous, edited and published by his friends.).

Norman 381 (1st) "the classic study on depression". Osler 4621 "A great medical treatise". Heirs of Hippocrates 252 (2nd)

Burton's book consists mostly of a collection of opinions of a multitude of writers, grouped under quaint and old-fashioned divisions; in a solemn tone Burton endeavoured to prove indisputable facts by weighty quotations. The subjects discussed and determined by Burton ranged from the doctrines of religion to military discipline, from inland navigation to the morality of dancing-schools.
On its surface, the book is presented as a medical textbook in which Burton applies his vast and varied learning, in the scholastic manner, to the subject of melancholia (which includes what is now termed clinical depression). Though presented as a medical text, The Anatomy of Melancholy is as much a sui generis work of literature as it is a scientific or philosophical text, and Burton addresses far more than his stated subject. In fact, the Anatomy uses melancholy as the lens through which all human emotion and thought may be scrutinized, and virtually the entire contents of a 17th-century library are marshaled into service of this goal. It is encyclopedic in its range and reference.
In his satirical preface to the reader, Burton's persona Democritus Junior explains, "I write of melancholy by being busy to avoid melancholy." This is characteristic of the author's style, which often supersedes the book's strengths as a medical text or historical document as its main source of appeal to admirers. Both satirical and serious in tone, the Anatomy is "vitalized by (Burton's) pervading humour", and Burton's digressive and inclusive style, often verging on a stream of consciousness, consistently informs and animates the text.[citation needed] In addition to the author's techniques, the Anatomy's vast breadth – addressing topics such as digestion, goblins, the geography of America, and others – make it a valuable contribution to multiple research disciplines.

The Puritan controversialist William Prynne, famous for his attack on the English theater in Histrio-Mastix (1633) , here turns his wrath on the 17th-century fashion of growing one lock of hair longer than the others, calling it "unnaturall" and 'shamefull," characteristic of savages. According to Prynne, Satan used these lovelocks to pull folks down to hell; and those who wore them were "Ruffians, Rovers, Fantastiques, Humourists, Fashion-mongers ... Effeminate, Lascivious, Voluptuous, Singular, or Vaine-glorious persons." Plate from 'Academie de l'Espee'

[Leiden: B. & A. Elzevir 1628 - A fine print from the most sumptuous book on fencing ever produced, which combines a strong design sense with beauty and historical importance, executed by one of the greatest engravers of the day. The image illustrates Thibault's theories of successful fencing using movement and mathematical principles. Thibault's work was produced during a period when the Italian rapier (or epee) held sway. "The Italians discovered the effectiveness of the dexterous use of the point rather than the edge of the sword. By the end of the 16th century, their lighter weapon.and simple, nimble, and controlled fencing style, emphasizing skill and speed rather than force, spread throughout Europe. Most of the wrestling tricks [used in earlier disciplines] were abandoned, the lunge was discovered, and fencing became established as an art" ( Encyclopaedia Britannica ). The present image marks the zenith of the use of the epee in Europe. "In the latter half of the 17th century, the sword and swordsmanship changed dramatically with a change in gentleman's dress. In France the court of Louis XIV set the fashion of silk stockings, breeches, and brocaded coats. As the long trailing rapier was unsuited to this form of dress, fashion decreed the wearing of a light, short court sword. The French style set in throughout Europe as the Italian had done earlier" (op. cit.). Cf. Vigeant p. 125; cf. Willems 302. Copper engraving by Johann Gelle. Very good condition apart from some mild creasing.
