Lugduni Batavorum (Leyden), Elzevier, 1626. 4to (21.4 x 15.7 cm). Engraved title page, engraved portrait of Neander; [xxxvi], 256, [iii] pp., including page-sized engravings (plates) of tobacco plants, cultivation and curing of tobacco, pipes, etc. Contemporary vellum with script title in an old hand on the spine; slightly later endpapers.l A rare work on tobacco and its merits by the early experimenter Johann Neander (1596 or 1597-after 1632), from Bremen. Second edition, given the frontispiece dated 1626. The Epistola dedicatoria cryptically contains the year 1622 ("7. Kal. Maij styl. Gregor. anno DoMInI IesV ChrIstI SerVatorIs VerI"). Hirsch IV, 332: Arents coll. 84, 89a: "... a popular compendium of information relating to the 'scientific' methods of preparing and using tobacco 'for all the ailments of human body'. The cuts... illustrate the native methods of cultivating, gathering, curing and preparing tobacco.". Bound in the rear, unpaginated, is a long (3 pp.) verse in Dutch by Ioost (or Joost) van Ravelingen on the merits and curses "Tabacks Lof en Lastering" of tabacco, and dedicated to Neander. Van Ravelingen is better known as editor of Dodoens' Kruydeboeck. Like in the first edition, pages 55, 69, 167, 249, 253 wrongly numbered as 45, 65, 147, 253, 257. This may suggest that only the title page (dated 1626) is in "2nd edition". Plate on "p. 253" = 249) bound after, instead of before p. 251., the same with page "257" (=253). Edges with a few repairs, using later vellum, some small wormholes, spots and wrinkles to the front and back cover. First text page with old owner's inscription and repair at the top margin. Although the flyleaves are old, they are not contemporary. The last few leaves with a small brownish spot, otherwise the interior is clean, without worming or other defects. Overall a very good, copy. Arents, p. 30; BM(NH) Cat., p. 1404 (noted, but not in BM(NH) library); Pritzel, 6624. Not in Stafleu & Cowan.

America with those known parts in that unknowne world both people and manner of buildings discribed and inlarged by I.S. Ano 1626.

A nice example of John Speed's 1626 map of America here in its second state, with the cartographic additions of Boston, Conectacut, Lon Ile, Mary land and Carolina. One of the most iconic maps of America ever made, this map is surrounded by decorative vignettes illustrating the indigenous peoples and cities of the Americas. This map is both beautiful and important. It features a number of first, including being the first atlas map to depict California as an island and to accurately depict the east coast of North America. Cartographically it follows on the earlier maps of the Dutchman Abraham Goos, the engraver, with updates to reflect the 1625 Briggs vision of an insular California. This is the first atlas map to represent California as an island. The idea of an insular California first appeared as a work of fiction in Garci Rodriguez de Montalvo's c. 1510 romance Las Sergas de Esplandian, where he writes Know, that on the right hand of the Indies there is an island called California very close to the side of the Terrestrial Paradise; and it is peopled by black women, without any man among them, for they live in the manner of Amazons. Baja California was subsequently discovered in 1533 by Fortun Ximenez, who had been sent to the area by Hernan Cortez. When Cortez himself traveled to Baja, he must have had Montalvo's novel in mind, for he immediately claimed the 'Island of California' for the Spanish King. By the late 16th and early 17th century ample evidence had been amassed, through explorations of the region by Francisco de Ulloa, Hernando de Alarcon and others, that California was in fact a peninsula. However, by this time other factors were in play. Francis Drake had sailed north and claimed 'New Albion' (identified here on the northwest coast of California Island) near modern day Washington or Vancouver for England. The Spanish thus needed to promote Cortez's claim on the 'Island of Calif

?A NEW MAP OF THE XVII PROVINCES OF LOW GERMANIE, mended a new in a manie places.??Kopergravure van de Zeventien Provinci?n vervaardigd in 1626, van cartograaf John Speed. Met afbeeldingen van ?a gentleman?? en ?a gentlewoman??, ?a Brabander?? en ?a Brabanders wife??, ?a Hollander?? en ?a Hollanders wife??, ?a fisherman?? en ?a fishers wife??, ?a country man?? en ?a country woman??, als ook standgezichten van Amsterdam, Antwerpen, Gent, Middelburg, Groningen, Zutphen, Utrecht en Atrecht (tegenw. Arras).

Jan van Kessel (1626 in Antwerp - 1679 in idem) was a Flemish painter of still lifes, who was the father of another painter with the same name Jan van Kessel, and Jan Brueghel the Elder's grandson. He was the son of Hieronymus van Kessel and Paschasia Brueghel, and was a pupil of his father and his uncle Jan Brueghel the Younger. He became a member of the Antwerp Guild of Saint Luke in 1644 as "blomschilder" (flower painter). He was influenced by Daniel Seghers. According to Houbraken, he was famous in his lifetime for the neatness of his flower paintings and Cornelis de Bie wrote a poem about him.He specialized in small-scale pictures of subjects gleaned from the natural world such as floral still lifes and allegorical series showing animal kingdoms, the four elements, the senses, or the parts of the world. Obsessed with picturesque detail, van Kessel worked from nature and used illustrated scientific texts as sources for filling his pictures with objects represented with almost scientific accuracy.Jan van Kessel painted many animals (especially insects) and flowers, as well as some mythological and biblical scenes. his choice of subject leaned towards those which included animals and plants. His pupils were his sons Jan and Ferdinand van Kessel.[1]

        Zeventien Provinciën - John Speed.

Arras). Prijs: ?2.100,-.

First Part of the Life and Raigne of King Henrie

1626. First Edition . HAYWARD, Sir John. The First Part of the Life and Raigne of King Henrie the IIII. London: John Wolfe [M. Parsons for William Stansby], 1599 [circa 1626]. Small quarto, early 20th-century full blue crushed morocco gilt, marbled endpapers. $1850.Second edition of the Life of Henry IV.Any publication about the usurper Henry IV was disturbing to Queen Elizabeth. “She caused both the author and the publisher to be examined and imprisoned and was apparently only dissuaded from hanging the former by BaconÂ’s comment, after reading the book, that the author was not guilty of treason but only of felony since he had stolen the better part from Tacitus” (Pforzheimer, 458). Though the colophon is dated 1599, this is a later variant issue, published circa 1626. STC 12997a (variant). Pforzheimer 457, note. Expert paper restoration to bottom margin of title page. Interior fine. A beautiful copy.

Disputationum de sancto matrimonii sacramento...editio haec postrema superiorum auctoritate correcta.

Apud Martinum Nutium colophon: Ex typographia Henrici Aertsi], 1626. Early edition, following the first complete printing of 1605 (preceded by a partial printing in 1602), of this sometimes controversial, oft-reprinted treatise on marriage, morality, and sexual sin. Each of the three books has its own separate title-page. Brunet calls this "un ouvrage célèbre, à cause de quelques passages singuliers qui s'y trouvent,"while Englisch notes that "Dieses Werk enthalt alle moglichen Variationen uber die Geschlechtssunde in umstandlichster und eingehendster Behandlung," and Sommervogel simply states that the work caused its author "quelques chagrins" despite the purity and austerity of his personal life (a Jesuit from the time he was 17 years old, the Cordova-born Sánchez was said by his spiritual director to have "carried his baptismal innocence to the grave," according to the Catholic Encyclopedia online).

        Golden Fleece

1626. First Edition . VAUGHAN, William. The Golden Fleece Divided into Three Parts, under which are discovered the Errours of Religion, the Vices and Decayes of the Kingdome, and lastly the Wayes to get Wealth, and to restore Trading so much complayned of. Transported from Cambrioll Colchos, out of the southermost Part of the Iland [sic], commonly called the Newfoundland, by Orpheus Junior, for the generall and perpetuall Good of Great Britaine. London, Francis Williams, 1626. Square octavo, contemporary limp vellum recased, hand-lettered spine title, later endpapers. Housed in a custom clamshell box. $16,500.Scarce first edition of this early allegorical promotion of settlements in Newfoundland, ""one of the earliest contributions to English literature from America” (Baer).""Deeply concerned about the poor economic conditions prevailing in Wales,"" William Vaughan ""became interested in overseas colonization as a means for improving the lot of his countrymen. As a result he decided to try to plant a colony in Newfoundland, largely because it was easily accessible, and also because it possessed an established fishery. In 1616 he purchased from the Newfoundland Company the part of the Avalon Peninsula to the south of a line from Caplin Bay across to Placentia Bay, and decided to name the colony 'New Cambriol.' In the following year, Vaughan set out a few ill-prepared colonists to the harbour of Aquaforte, where they spent the winter huddled in cabins built by migratory fishermen for summer use. In 1618, Vaughan hired Richard Whitbourne to bring colonists and provisions to the settlement, and appointed him governorÂ…moving it to a better location at RenewsÂ… but in the end only six colonists spent the winter of 1619 at Renews, and the settlement was abandoned in the following yearÂ… Vaughan did his best to promote Newfoundland settlement by publication of his somewhat fanciful book The Golden Fleece"" (Howgego). ""The work is one of the earliest contributions to English literature from America, and was intended to advertise Vaughan's colony. It is a queer fantasy in prose and verse, in which a succession of historical characters present complaints against the evils of the age in the court of Apollo, and finally find the Golden Fleece in Newfoundland"" (Baer). ""Vaughan's treatise was divided into three parts, the first concerned with religion, the second with the 'Vices and Decayes of the Kingdome,' and the third with 'wayes to get wealth, and to restore Trading. The third part focused on colonizationÂ… he created a unique text by bringing into this dialogue the central figures of contemporary Jacobean and Elizabethan colonization, including John Guy, Captain John Mason, Richard Whitbourne, Francis Drake and Martin Frobisher"" (McDiarmid & Collinson). The Golden Fleece is an extraordinary work, in vivid contrast to the more prosaic and practical propagandist tracts on Newfoundland which Whitbourne and Mason had written. Its purpose was simple enough: Vaughan was anxious to promote the island as a place for settlement. Success, he believed, would relieve overpopulation at home, treble England's present income from the fishery which he estimated to be 20,000 pounds, and generally increase tradeÂ…Vaughan provided us with some of the earliest English literature on North America"" (Gillian Cell). Lacking the extraordinarily rare map by John Mason, which ""is very rarely found with the book"" (Church). STC 2460. Sabin 98693. Church 409. Howgego V18. Interior generally fine, blank leaves between parts (V4, Oo2) and blanks at both front and rear excised. Scarce.
