[Handschrift; Nostradamus]:
Dezember 1503 in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, Provence; † 2.
Middelburg: Jan van der Hellen for Jan Pieterss. van de Venne, 1622. 4to (233 x 176 mm). [16], 60, [19], [1 blank] pp. Large emblematic publisher's mark on title-page, four half-page engraved illustrations, by Pieter de Jode (2), Pieter Serwouters, and Willem van der Passe after Adriaen van der Venne. Woodcut head- and tail-pieces and initials. Title a bit soiled and with a short marginal tear, light dampstaining to first and last leaves. Later parchment over pasteboards, ms. spine title. Provenance: Samuel Ashton Thompson Yates (1842-1903), bookplate dated 1894.*** first edition of Cats' retelling of the Biblical tale of Queen Vasthi, the wife of Ahasuerus, who refused her husband's summons to appear before his guests wearing the royal crown (and presumably nothing else), and who was duly punished. The first part of Cats' word-playing verse adaptation, whose title may be translated as The Theater of Manly Respectability, is a long speech in the Queen's defense and in defense of all women, followed by a speech against her and in favor of "Manly Respectability." The work concludes with the Judgment, which is that Vasthi should obey her husband, because women's subservience to men is a law of nature. A final poem titled "Aller Princessen, Spiegel, aller Vrovwen, Spoor," is illustrated with an engraving showing the humbled queen wearing a yoke around her neck. The parallels and differences between the Biblical Ahasuerus and Herodotus' tale of King Candaules (supplied in Latin and Dutch translations in an appendix), whose wife's rebellion was more successful, are fully exploite … [Click Below for Full Description]

BARROS, Tomás de.
[?Madrid: s.n., c. 1622.] Folio (295 x 202mm). Late 19th-century calf-backed grey boards by Lloyd, London, spine lettered in gilt; ff. [9]-14; woodcut initial; extremities a little rubbed and bumped, short cracks on joints, some light browning and damp-marking, skillful marginal repairs, that on f. 3 touching text, otherwise a clean copy; provenance: early manuscript foliation in upper margins; Maggs Brothers, London (loosely-inserted invoice dated 1999, sold to:) Bent Einer Juel-Jensen (1922-2006, his Ge'ez booklabel on upper pastedown). Rare first edition. In the second half of the 16th century, Portuguese missionaries established a presence in Ethiopia, which was perceived as a bulwark against Ottoman expansion in the area and the consequent threat to Portuguese colonial and commercial interests. Following the conversion of the Ethiopian emperor Susenyos to Catholicism in 1622, the Jesuits increased their presence and missionary work in the country dramatically, attempting to reform traditional religious practices. These efforts were resented by the Ethiopians, and social unrest and civil war followed, leading to the abdication of Susenyos and the accession to the throne of his son Fasiladas, who rejected Catholicism and eventually either expelled or executed the Jesuits remaining in the country by 1634. The author of this letter to Muzio Vitelleschi, General of the Society of Jesus, was the Portuguese missionary Tomás de Barros (1591-1658). De Barros was born in Coimbra and entered the Society of Jesus in Goa in 1610. He lectured on humanities, philosophy and theology … [Click Below for Full Description]

HERRERA Y TORDESILLAS, Antonio de.
Amsterdam Colijn, 1622. Four parts in 1 volume, folio (36 x 24 cm. approx.), [4], 44, [3], 46-81 [i.e. 82], [1],[1], 2-9, [1] 2-11 leaves, 110 leaves, without final blank, engraved additional title, 17 engraved folding maps, 5 engraved illustrations; light toning, light marginal dampstaining, letterpress title slightly soiled and with small chips to corners. Nineteenth century red roan-backed marbled paper-covered boards, spine lettered in gilt; extremities a bit rubbed. The first complete account of the Le Maire-Schouten expedition around the world, the first to successfully round Cape Horn, and the first edition in Latin, expanding significantly the Madrid edition of 1601. The first two parts of the book concentrate on the New World and include fine maps of Central and South America, with those on the Pacific coast adding a great deal of new geographical knowledge. Of primary importance, however, is the second part containing the description of the great Dutch navigator Jacob Le Maire's 1615-1617 voyage in search of Terra Australis. Le Maire's rounding of Patagonia via Cape Horn impacted navigation in many ways, but principally by dispelling the idea of an imaginary Southland. Michel Colin issued simultaneous Latin, French and Dutch editions of this work, adding three maps not in the 1601 Spanish edition. Copies are known with a portrait of Le Maire, but this is not called for in the list of plates.
In addition, the small map on the title-page is noteworthy for being the first cartographic depiction of California as an island. The suite of maps form an early (fourth) atla … [Click Below for Full Description]
