Cort verhael ende afbeeldinghe der justitie, geschiet den 5. mey 1623. in 'sGravenhaghe.Amsterdam, Claes Jansz. Visscher, 1623. Engraved illustration (26.5 x 14.5 cm), giving four circular portraits and 10 separate scenes, flanked by a letterpress description in Dutch. First state of a rare print showing the portraits and execution and burial scenes of Hendrick Danielsz. Slatius, Willem Perty, Jan Blansaert and Abraham Blansaert. They were executed as conspirators in the failed attempt to assassinate Maurits of Nassau, Prince of Orange, in 1623. The illustration is engraved by the publisher and engraver Claes Jansz. Visscher.A heated theological and political conflict had raged in the Low Countries between the Arminians (from 1610 also called Remonstrants) and Gomarists for more than a decade when it came to a head with the Synod of Dort (1618/19), which decided in favour of the Gomarists. The Synod led to the 1619 execution of the Republic's greatest statesman Johan van Oldenbarnevelt, who had supported the Arminian cause. In revenge his sons Reinier and Willem conspired to assassinate the (Gomarist) Dutch stadholder Maurits of Nassau, Prince of Orange. Other prominent members of Dutch society who had political, religious or personal grudges against the Prince lent their support. The plot was betrayed in February 1623, and the conspirators arrested and executed from March to May. Strengthened ant the back, with some unobtrusive old folds and restored minor tears, obfuscating a few letters and slightly affecting the print, but otherwise good. Aesopi Phrygis fabulae elegantissimis eiconibus veras animalium species ad vivum adumbrantes. Gabriae Graeci fabellae lxiv [recté lxiii]. Haec omnia cum Latina interpretatione. Nunc postremùm excusa & accuratè recognita.Paris, Jean Libert, 1623. 16mo. With a woodcut decoration on the title-page and woodcut decorated initials in the text.Contemporary French gold-tooled calf, sewn on 2 supports, each board with the coat-of-arms of Henri de La Tour (1555-1623), Duc de Bouillon and Prince of Sedan, who married the daughter of William the Silent, founding father of the Dutch Republic (with a French Ducal crown, the whole in a wreath of 2 laurel branches with berries), the flat spine divided into 4 fields, each with a central decoration, gilt edges. Marbled paste-downs (fine-toothed combed pattern in red, blue and white). [2], 236, [1] pp. Very rare 24mo edition of 150 prose fables by Aesop and 43 verse fables by Babrius (here called Gabrius) in Greek and Latin on facing pages, remotely based on the text of the illustrated humanistic editions published by Jean de Tournes in Lyons (Bodemann notes a 1570 edition, but the USTC records them back to 1550). While the existence of Aesop (ca. 620-ca. 584 BCE) as a story teller is attested in many early sources, the canon that appears under his name contains fables passed down orally and rendered in literary form by many authors over the centuries. Babrius wrote verse fables shortly before 200 CE that were later rendered in Greek prose and added to the Aesop canon. February 1623. Third state of a rare print of the execution of the conspirators in the failed attempt to assassinate the Dutch stadholder Maurits of Nassau, Prince of Orange, in 1623, skilfully engraved by the publisher and engraver Claes Jansz. Visscher. The plate is divided into nine panels, the main one showing a view of the beheading at the square in front of Het Binnenhof in The Hague, watched by a large crowd. Zephaniae waerschouwinge, om te voor-comen den onder-gang Jerusalems: oock passende op de tegenwoordige ghelegentheyt onses weerden Vader-lants.Middelburg, Hans van der Hellen for Marten Jansz. Brandt, Amsterdam, 1623. 4to. With Brandt's charming woodcut device on title-page. Contemporary half calf. [8], 156 pp. First edition of one of the puritan and edifying works by the reformed minister of Middelburg Willem Teellinck (1579-1629). The title would translate in English as: Zephania's warning, to prevent the destruction of Jerusalem; also fit for the present condition of our dear country. With his many works Teellinck intended to introduce into the Republic the spirit of English pietist Puritanism. On the one hand he tried to stimulate personal piety, on the other hand he levelled criticism at various ethical and religious abuses and errors, and aimed for a complete reform in all areas of life as certainly also in the present work. With his books he has exerted a truly enormous influence on theologians and parishioners of the 17th century alike. Teellinck is therefore generally seen as the father of the influential reformed pietist movement within the Dutch Reformed Church, known as the "Further Reformation".With manuscript annotations and proverbs on the fly-leaves, dated 1770. Some marginal waterstains, otherwise in good condition. Knuttel 3496; Van der Haar, Schatkamer 298; cf. HALTEREN, Nicolaes van.
Princelijck gheschenck, of tractaet der medicynen.Including: ... Het tractaet van de alchymie.Amsterdam, Jan Evertsz. Cloppenborgh (financed by Johannes à Porta), 1623. 4to. 17th-century(?) vellum. [8], 190, [2 blank] pp. First edition (first issue of the only edition?) of a very rare work on practical medicine, medical botany and pharmacology, with hundreds of recipes. The same publisher issued a second edition or more likely reissued the first edition in 1633 (perhaps merely with the date altered in manuscript or with a correction slip). We have located only three other copies of the 1623 version. Johannes à Porta had it published at his own expense, giving it its present title (which means "princely gift") and dedicated it to the Dutch stadholder Maurits of Nassau, Prince of Orange (1567-1625). Added at the end is a treatise on alchemy for lovers of Paracelsus (1493/94-1541). Nicolaes van Halteren or Nicolaus Halterus (ca. 1560?-ca. 1605) was a minister of the church, first briefly at Asperen in 1588 and from 1588-1604 at Hoogblokland and Hoornaar. The son of his successor tells us in the dedication to the present book that he became a famous medical practitioner. With the margins of the title-page tattered and thumbed and a few other leaves slightly tattered, one or in a few leaves more small worm holes in the lower gutter margin through most of the book and with some stains in the foot margin, but otherwise in good condition. The sewing is loose and the vellum of the binding stained. BMN I, p. 56; Ferguson I, p. 362 note; Haller, Bibl. medicinae practicae (1777), II, p. … [Click Below for Full Description]

Clare verthooninghe, ofte af-beeldinghe des gantschen handels deser schrickelijcke ende moordadighe conspirateurs, (jeghens den heere Prince van Orangien, mitsgaders den staet ende wel-varen van 't land) vervaetende het begin , totten eynde haerder justitien toe.Utrecht, Jan Amelissz., 1623. 1mo. Broadsheet (40 x 31.5 cm), with engraved illustration (15 x 25.5 cm) below the title, and a letterpress dialogue in verse in three columns plus and explanation of the plate, below. Rare broadsheet on the failed attempt to assassinate Maurits of Nassau, Prince of Orange, in 1623, with a spectacular engraving showing the main conspirators (Hendrick Danielsz. Slatius, Reinier van Oldenbarnevelt and Adriaen Adriaensz. van Dijck), with four medallion portraits of other conspirators (Abraham Blansaert, Jan Blansaert, Willem Perty and Davidt Coornwinder), two insets showing their gruesome beheadings (and one spectator falling fatally from a tree), a view of Slatius on an execution wheel, gallows in the background, and other scenes related to the assassination attempt. The engraving is here in its second revised state.A heated theological and political conflict had raged in the Low Countries between the Arminians (from 1610 also called Remonstrants) and Gomarists for more than a decade when it came to a head with the Synod of Dort (1618/19), which decided in favour of the Gomarists. The Synod led to the 1619 execution of the Republic's greatest statesman Johan van Oldenbarnevelt, who had supported the Arminian cause. In revenge his sons Reinier and Willem conspired to assassinate the (Goma … [Click Below for Full Description]

Justitie over enige Arminiaensche verraders, geschiet in s'Gravenhaech.[Amsterdam, Claes Jansz. Visscher, 1623]. Engraved print (26.5 x 32 cm) mounted on a large sheet of 18th-century(?) laid paper (50.5 x 33 cm), with manuscript text in three columns with the title: Cort verhaal ende waerachtige afbeeldinge der justitie geschiet in s'Gravenhage, over seeker, conspirateurs, diens conspiratie deur Gods voorsienigheid ontdekt is den 6e. The other panels show portraits of Reinier van Oldenbarnevelt, David Koornwinder, Adriaen Adriaensz. van Dijck and Cornelis Gerrits and five smaller scenes of the dismembering of the bodies.A heated theological and political conflict had raged in the Low Countries between the Arminians (from 1610 also called Remonstrants) and Gomarists for more than a decade when it came to a head with the Synod of Dort (1618/19), which decided in favour of the Gomarists.

[LE POT, Laurent. O.P.] fl. 1623
P. Billaine: Paris, 1623. Contemporary vellum over soft paper boards (soiled), manuscript spine title, edges sprinkled red. Only Edition of this detailed clinical psychiatric case study published as religious propaganda. This is the contemporaneous account by a court clerk, who recorded, as an eye witness, the four and a half months of public and private exorcisms performed by Dominican Laurent Le Pot on the widowed Beauvais weaver Denise de La Caille. We meet her covered in lice, unable to eat or drink, immobile, nearly blind and prone to violent outbursts, convulsions, hallucinations, contortions, vomiting, speaking in tongues and LEVITATION. Frequently, one or more than forty other demons - all named - exited her body, mocked the Virgin, taunted the priests, horrified onlookers then returned to Denise's body to inflict further suffering. The book concludes with THE FORMAL WRITTEN AGREEMENT BETWEEN LE POT, SATAN, BELZEBUTH AND THREE OTHER DEMONS TO END THE POSSESSION. I have located two copies in American libraries. In good condition (small title stain, lightly foxed), 18th-century title inscription of the Rouen Jesuits, bookplate of the Norman bibliophile abbé Germain Barré (d. 1836), letterpress label of Rouen canon Jean-Baptiste St. Colas (1809-74). ¶Ferber, Demonic Possession and Exorcism in Early Modern France 156 n. 7; Leblond, "La Démonopathie dans l'Histoire. JIANG, Guan
1623. 12 vols. 8vo, orig. brown wrappers (upper cover of Vol. I & lower cover of final vol. somewhat worn), orig. block-printed title labels on upper covers, new stitching. [Japan]: from the colophon leaf in final volume: "Mei shou edition. 1623." First edition to be published in Japan of Ming yi lei an, originally published in China in 1525. This is an important work, as it contains one of the largest compilations of case histories - more than 2400 - in Chinese medicine. Jiang (1503-65), gathered here the texts from earlier classic collections of medical cases from the Qin (221-206 B.C.) to Ming dynasties, arranged them by disease or symptom, and has provided commentary. This work was popular both in China (there are editions up through our century) and in Japan. Vol. I begins with four Prefaces, dated 1522, 1591, 1591, and 1586. These are followed by a "grand index" arranged by name of disease or symptom, a six-page list of famous physicians who recorded these case histories, and then a most interesting five-page bibliography of earlier Chinese medical works, several of which we do not recognize. A nice set. Some worming in many of the volumes, mostly in the margins but sometimes touching the text.

A disciple of Meister Eckhart, he belonged to the Dominican order. Tauler was known as one of the most important Rhineland Mystics. He promoted a certain neo-Platonist dimnension in the Dominican spirituality of his time. In 1338 or 1339 the Dominicans were exiled from Strasbourg as a result of the tensions between Pope John XXII and Lewis of Bavaria. Tauler spent his exile (c. 1339-1343) in Basel. Here he became aquatinted with the circles of devout clergy and laity known as the Friends of God (Gottesfreunde). Upon his return to Strasbourg, Tauler was met with a devastating fire in 1346 and Black Death. It is said that when the city was deserted by all who could it, Tauler remained at his post, encouraging terror-stricken fellow-citizens with sermons and personal visits. Mystic, correspondent of Luis de Granada and Teresa of Ávila, author of Tratado de la oracio?n y meditacio?n, and patron saint of Brazil — and of night watchmen! — Pedro de Alcantara was beatified on 18 April 1622 and canonized 28 April 1669. Pope Gregory XV issued a brief at Rome on 18 April 1622 (Romae: Ex Typographiae Reu. Camerae Apostolicae, 1622) announcing the beatification. This was reprinted in Lima in 1623 by Peru's third printer, Jerónimo de Conteras, with a nice 5-line initial "I." Searches of NUC, WorldCat, and CCPBE locate => no reported copies of this New World "edition" and Medina only knew of the broadside from the copy then in the Peruvian National Library. Medina, Lima, 106. Some insect damage with partial loss of about 14 letters (not impairing ability to read the text); some tears in margins (not into text area). Catholic Church. Pope (1621?1623; Gregory XV).
Lima: Geronymo de Contreras, 1623. Imperial folio (42,5 x 30.5 cm, 16.75" x 11.75"). [1] p. Writing in iron gall ink on verso has bled through to recto. => A rare and interesting example of Contreras' job printing.
