         Septentrionalium Terrarum Descriptio

      Jodocus Hondius, Amsterdam 1623 - Map. Colored engraving. Image measures 14.5" x 15.5" Map. Colored engraving. Image measures 14.5" x 15.5". This fine antique map is the first printed map dedicated to the Arctic Circle and the North Polar regions. Derived from an inset of the Arctic regions in Mercator's great 1569 world map, where he first introduced his revolutionary projection, here the scope is extended to the latitude of 60 degrees to enable the depictions of the Frobisher and Davis' attempts to search for the North West and North East Passages. California curiously appears north of the Strait of Anian and is labeled as Spanish Territory. Across from Anian on the Asian coast, Mercator labels the land of Gog. This most likely references the regions of Gog and Magog appearing in the Hebrew Bible or to the legend of horse-riding barbarians from near the Don River and the Sea of Azov, locked up by Alexander the Great behind gates surrounded by the 'Caspian' or the Caucasus Mountains. Perhaps the most intriguing feature here is the mapping of the North Pole. Since no explorers at this time had made it anywhere near the North Pole, Mercator based his depiction on the legend that a large rock (the Rupes Nigra) stood at the pole in the center of a whirlpool known as Polynya, or Open Polar Sea. Mercator is believed to be referencing the Inventio Fortunata, the lost book dating from the 14th century which describes the North Pole as a magnetic island surrounded by a giant whirlpool and four continents. The continents are separated by rivers through which warm water from the surrounding oceans flowed. Although Mercator also includes another magnetic rock just north of the Strait of Anian which he labels as the magnetic pole, indicating that given the magnetic variation, Mercator himself did not believe the north pole to be the magnetic pole. In addition, as one text annotation describes, one of the four islands was believed to be inhabited by pygmies. References to this can also be found in the Inventio Fortunata as the people that the author encountered. This could also be referring to the Skraeling (the name considered by some to be the direct Old Norse translation of the Latin word Pygmaei), the indigenous people of Greenland and North America whose men left the land to hunt in groups, leaving the females behind. Another interesting feature is the phantom island of Frisland appearing between Greenland and Iceland. The island might have originally been a reference to Iceland until the 1558 Zeno map noted it as a separate island. The island continued to appear in several maps through the 1660s. Following Mercator's death in 1594, it was left to his son Rumold to publish the first state of this map in 1595. This is the second state of the map published in 1623 by Jodocus Hondius. To account for the recent discoveries, particularly in Nova Zembla and Spitsbergen, Hondius, who acquired the plates in 1606, updated the plates. He erased the coastline of the islands with the 'Pygmie', added Nieulant, Willoughbes Land and Macsin and made Nova Zembla one single island but with an incomplete coast. In addition to the central hemisphere containing the Arctic, there are four roundels in the corners: one with the title, and the other three with maps of the Faeroe Isles, the Shetland Isles, and the non-existent island of Friesland. It is in good condition with overall toning. Centerfold exhibits minor wear and verso repair near the bottom margin, not affecting the image. Minor foxing, especially near the inset of Frisland in the top left. Latin text on verso. Gerardum Mercator (1512-1594) was an accomplished mathematician, cartographer, globe maker and engraver but is best known for the Mercator Projection. Incorporating the newly accepted fact that the world is round, Mercator was able to render longitude lines consistently straight on a chart. Tchemerzine IX, 70. - Sehr seltene Ausgabe der "Lettres", neben dem französischen Originaltext zum ersten Mal die lateinische, spanische u. italienische Übersetzung in vier Kolumnen enthaltend. -Blaise Pascal (1623-1662) verfasste 1656/57 eine Serie anonymer satirisch-polemischer Broschüren. Diese waren sehr erfolgreich und wurden 1657 in Holland unter dem Titel Provinciales, ou Lettres de Louis de Montalte à un provincial de ses amis et aux R. R. PP. Jésuites sur la morale et la politique de ces pères als Buch gedruckt. Es sind achtzehn Briefe eines fiktiven Paris-Reisenden namens Montalte, von denen die ersten zehn an einen fiktiven Freund in der heimatlichen Provinz gerichtet sind, die nächsten sechs an die Pariser Jesuitenpatres insgesamt und die letzten beiden speziell an den Beichtvater des Königs. In diesen Briefen beschreibt Montalte zunächst in der Rolle eines theologisch unbeschlagenen und naiven jungen Adeligen, wie Jesuiten ihm altklug und herablassend ihre Theologie erklären später, nachdem er quasi seine Lektion gelernt hat, beginnt er mit ihnen zu diskutieren und so scharfsinnig wie witzig ihre Lehren ad absurdum zu führen. Pascal persiflierte und attackierte so die zwar gewissermaßen verbraucherfreundliche, aber tendenziell opportunistische und oft spitzfindige Theologie - die berühmte Kasuistik - der Jesuiten und entlarvte ihren sehr weltlichen Machthunger. Die Lettres provinciales hatten, obwohl sie nach der Nr. 5 verboten wurden, bei Erscheinen der Buchausgabe auf den Index kamen und 1660 sogar vom Henker verbrannt wurden, großen und langandauernden Erfolg und bedeuteten längerfristig den Anfang vom Ende der Allmacht der Jesuiten, zumindest in Frankreich. Wegen ihrer Klarheit und Präzision gelten sie als ein Meisterwerk der französischen Prosa, das ihrem Autor einen Platz unter den Klassikern der französischen Literaturgeschichte verschaffte.

         The National Shakespeare, Comedies, Tragedies, Histories, in Three Volumes Being a Facsimile of the Text of the First Flio of 1623

      William Mackenzie, London - In the preface to this magnificent undated production (circa 1895) the publisher states that the scarcity of the original "First Folio" and the enormous price it has consequently attained in our times, exclude it from the shelves of most private libraries. That the text is scrupulously accurate to the original, including all those peculiarities of paging, spelling and punctuation, printed in a special antique type, such as which was employed in the "First Folio" upon hand made paper, with rough edges, especially manufactured to maintain the antique character of the edition. However they couldn't resist the temptation to add twenty specially executed illustrations by Sir Joseph Noel Paton (1821-1901) artist and folklore expert who painted in the Pre-Raphaelite style but declined to become a member of the brotherhood. Each volume was originally published at the price of three pounds ten shillings. All the text pages are clean, some moderate foxing only to the plates, otherwise in very good order. After attending the Latin School in Utrecht, he studied in Leuven. He was ordained in 1578 and continued his studies at Douai. From 1590 he teached rhetoric in Douai. Later in life he returned to Utrecht, and worked in spiritual care. In 1609 he moved to Antwerp, and then to Leuven, where he died in 1631.Joannes Collaert II (1561/6? - 1620/8?) came from a family of prolific engravers. His father Hans before him and his brother Adrian (1560-1618) were both engravers as well. Joannes Collaert II was not only a pupil of his father, but also of Philips Galle and Gerard de Jode. In turn he taught Antony van der Does. Otto Venius (Leiden ca. 1555 - Brussels 1629) was a humanist painter and draughtsman active in Brussels and Antwerp. He is mainly known for producing a number of emblemata, as well as teaching Peter Paul Rubens. In 1572 the Catholic Venius family moved to Antwerp, and later to Liege, where Otto studied for a while, before travelling to Rome in 1574/5. "One of the most celebrated polemics in science" (DSB. Galileo and Orazio Grassi, a Jesuit mathematician, disagreed about Grassi's work on the comets of 1618, and Il Saggiatore was one of Galileo's printed ripostes. As Galileo had been forbidden since 1616 to espouse or defend Copernican theory, he avoided direct discussion of the earth's motion, choosing instead the more subtle method of establishing a general scientific approach to the investigation of celestial phenomena. He claimed that no theory of comets could be advanced unless it were proved that comets were concrete moving objects and not solar-generated optic effects - a proof he stated was impossible" (Norman 857). "This was a truly masterful piece of sarcastic invective and criticism. It is still read today in Italian language classes in Italy as a fine example of the use of rhetoric devices in the Italian language" (P. Machamer, The Cambridge Companion to Galileo, 1998, p. 21). The title-page by Francesco Villamena shows the crest of the Barberini displaying the support of Pope Urban VIII, patron of the Accademia dei Lincei, which may have helped Galileo to publish the work. The first edition exists in various states. The points usually taken as identifying the first issue are: thick paper; the engraving on p.120 the right way up; short errata list of 16 corrections. In our copy, the engraving on p.120 however is placed upside-down and the bifolio P1/4 which includes p.120 is apparently of thinner paper and with a deviating watermark (but rather not supplied). *This work is often found without the dedicatory verses by Faber & Stelluti on gathering a4 as in our copy. In 1956, the London booksellers Davis & Orioli remarked "after having examined the various copies in the British Museum, we feel sure that the commendatory verses were added later. Wherein the insufficiencie of his answers giuen to the arguments brought in defence of a lusorious lot is manifested the imbecillitie of his arguments produced against the same further discouered and the point it selfe in controuersie more fully cleared by Thomas Gataker B. of D. and author of the former treatise. Einband mit deutlichen Läsuren an den Kanten. Die Titelseite ("W. Williams") und die letzte Seite des Vorworts ("John Richards Books Oct 31. 1763, Swanzey") wurden jeweils mit kleinen Namenseinträgen versehen.       Wolfgangus Kilianus, Eiconographus et civis Augustanus 1623 - Copper engraving Image 462 x 366 mm, Plate 470 x 374 mm, Sheet 545 x 403 mm A large and heavily annotated depiction of the giant figure from the Dream of Nebuchadnezzar in the biblical Book of Daniel. One of Kilian's rarest and most esoteric compositions, it was separately published by the artist in 1623. The present example, having a central fold, was likely bound into an illustrated bible, most probably to accompany the Book of Daniel or Revelations. The giant, clad in ornamental armour in the Dutch classical style, stands on a sea shore beside a rocky cliff. He carries a sceptre and rests his left hand against his hip, where a large, eagle-pommelled falchion hangs from his belt. On his head, he wears an open faced helmet with an elaborate plumed crest. The figure's entire body is covered in text, outlining the history and individuals of the Four Ages of man: Gold, Silver, Bronze, and Iron. Behind the figure, four islands have risen from the turbulent sea. Each houses a different allegorical beast, representing each of the ages in decline. The winged lion represents Babylon and Assyria, and the age of Gold, where Saturn and Jupiter reign supreme. The tusked bear is the Empire of the Medes, the age of Silver and the coming of Mars and Sol. The third kingdom, that of bronze, is depicted as a winged, four-headed leopard, a creature which represents the fractious kingdoms of the successors of Alexander the Great. Finally, the Age of Iron and the Empire of Rome is depicted as the Beast of Revelations, a dog like creature crowned with horns numbering 10 and 7. The figure is the central part of a recurring dream that afflicts the Babylonian king Nebuchadnezzar. The king, troubled and unable to interpret the dream, describes it to his various soothsayers, mystics, and magicians, but each in turn is unable to elucidate its meaning. Their fraudulence is punished by Nebuchadnezzar with death. The Hebrew captive, Daniel, is finally able to provide the king with an answer, explaining that the figure's constituent parts, of gold, silver, bronze, and iron, represent the great empires that will rise and fall before the coming of the Messiah. The figures helmet, its 'head of gold' contains the names of the great tyrants of the Old Testament. Nebuchadnezzar's own name is emblazoned across the figure's moustache, while the names of Daniel and Ezekiel, the 'eyes' of the Lord, are written across his eyebrows. The second age is written across the figure's pectorals, and includes the names of the most famous Persian kings, including Cambyses, Darius, and Xerxes. At the figure's abdomen, the empires of the world fragment. Below Alexander, the line of kings and tyrants is divided geographically, into the Empires of the Ptolemies in Egypt, the Seleucids in Babylon, and the Antiochids in Asia Minor. The final kingdom is ushered in with the conquests of Julius Caesar, and the dominance of Rome. The emperors themselves are listed on the figure's kilt. Each age is also annotated with its date of commencement, measured from the year of creation ('Anno Mundi'), and its duration. Unlike most interpretations of the Dream of Nebuchadnezzar, Kilian's depiction does not end with the rift of the Roman empire into East and West, but instead presents the division as ongoing. Each leg, made of mingled clay and iron, includes a list of monarchs of East and West, drawing particular attention to the conflict between Christianity and Islam as personified by the Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand II and the Ottoman Sultan Mustapha. The world itself is divided into nations on the figures toes. On the right foot are Germania, Hispania, Anglia, Italia, and Gallia. On the left are the lands of the Ottoman empire, Graecia, Syria, Asia, Aegyptus, and Aphrica. To the right of the scene, the fatal boulder teeters on the cliff-side, ready to sweep away the Kingdoms of men, and become the mountain that will hold the Kingdom of Heaven.       1623. From the Collection of Arthur & Charlotte Vershbow. The complete set of 16 etchings including title, sheets 80 x 80 mm and similar, good impressions of the second states (of three or four), with thread margins, occasional small thin spots on the reverse, otherwise in good condition. In four mats. Provenance: Purchased from Hellmuth Wallach, 1957. Lieure contends that the plates were engraved at different dates, but that the majority belongs to Callot's Florentine period (1611-21). He dates thirteen of them (the ones representing the same character twice) to 1617, and notes that the backgrounds added in the second state of those thirteen plates are technically similar to those executed after Callot's return to Nancy. Despite arguing that Callot is named as 'Iacopo' on the frontispiece (a signature, Lieure says, Callot stopped using from 1618, when he started signing as 'Iacomo'), he concludes that the backgrounds as well as two plates (Lieure 404, 405) and the frontispiece were executed after Callot's return in Nancy (1621). Lieure contends that the first thirteen plates of 'Varie Figure' are an early trial announcing the 'Caprices' set (c.1617). Daniel Ternois (see catalogue of the exhibition 'Jacques Callot', Nancy, 1992, No. 285-300) disagrees, noting that the 'Varie Figure' cannot be seen as an experiment technically inferior to 'Caprices': the manner is bold, controlled, and the drawings related to the set are more naturalistic than mannerist, thus contrasting with the figures in 'Caprices'. He therefore concludes that the 'Varie Figure' were executed after Callot's return to Lorraine in 1621. Lieure 201-213, 403-405.

      Pierre Vallet, Paris 1623 - Folio (352 x 233 mm). Engraved title, engraved portrait of Vallet and 93 engraved plates. Modern vellum. Lacks portrait of Robin, plate 28 with repaired break along platemark, plate 32 with repaired marginal tear crossing border. Provenance: Louis Dartigole Fargues (early inscription on title; his? manuscript addition of page numbers in the index and identification of subjects on the plates); four early collectors' stamps at end on index and in margin of the portrait; purchased from Herbert Reichner, 1962. THE SECOND AND EXPANDED EDITION OF WHAT BLUNT DESCRIBES AS "THE FIRST IMPORTANT FLORILEGIUM," following the first edition of 1608 which contained only 72 plates. Pierre Vallet was the first botanical painter at the French Court of the seventeenth century, and also held the titles of royal gardener and royal embroiderer. Le Jardin du Roy, published in Paris in 1623, was actually a pattern book for painters, embroiderers, and tapestry weavers. It was inspired by Marie de' Medici's great passion for flowers and plants, which set the fashion for floral themes at the French court at the beginning of the 17th century. It had only been preceded by what was perhaps the first florilegium published in Europe edition of the 1608, Le Jardin du Roy très Chrestien Henry IV. The two editions differed only in the number of plates, and all of the drawings were based on plants growing in the King's Garden and in the personal garden of the royal botanist, Jean Robin. Born at Orléans around 1575, Vallet was an engraver of such repute that he received a court appointment, and there made the acquaintance of Robin, director of the Royal Gardens of the Louvre, who had brought back several exotic botanical specimens from Spain and the islands off the coast of Guinea, including the Iris bulbosa depicted in this work. Tournefort refers to Robin as the most celebrated botanist of his time and Linnaeus named the locust tree (Robinia) after him. Vallet and Robin collaborated on several works, but their masterpiece is certainly Le Jardin du Roy. The plates are all etched but most also include engraved highlights. Their naturalism, set new standards for natural history illustration, and was widely copied and adapted by others including Johann Theodor de Bry, Emanuel Sweert, and Friderico Barbette. The present copy has 93 plates, which are numbered 1-30, 32-57, 59-95. According to the table of contents, plates 31 and 58 were replaced by plates 94 and 95. The collation of this work varies from copy to copy: Nissen calls for 2 portraits and 90 plates. The BL copy has one portrait and 95 plates. One of Salas Barbadillo´s magnum opus, a collection of short nocturnal novels set in a Madrid courtesan ambience, which combines satirical humor and picaresque elements. Salas Barbadillo (1581-1635) was a Spanish novelist, poet and playwright, friends with Miguel de Cervantes, Paravicino and Valdivieso; although he of course never gained the fame of other writers of the Siglo de Oro, due in part possibly to his undisciplined life (imprisoned for injuring a noble, agitated love life, exiled for writing a satire against judges, etc.) his works are appreciated, as well as his talent, in 1613, the Council of Aragon commissioned him to censure the Novelas Ejemplares. Amongst his works, we find the Cavallero Puntual, La Casa de placer Honesto, Patrona de Madrid restituida, and La hija de la Celestina, from which Moliere is said to have received inspiration. Death found him in poverty in 1635, in Madrid. “Some of his works were translated into English and French, and Scarron's Hypocrites is based on La Ingeniosa Elena; he deserved the vogue which he enjoyed till late in the 17th century, for his satirical humour, versatile invention and pointed style are an effective combination.” (1911 Encyclopædia Britannica). "Er hielt viel auf die Astrologie, und wolte durch den Calculum astronomicum gefunden haben, daß ihm Anno 1602 an einem gewissen Tage ein groß Unglück begegenen würde. Ob er sich nun gleich an solchem Tage ungemein in acht nahm, so soll ihm doch ein Zufall begegenet seyn, dadurch er ein hinckend Bein bekommen" (Jöcher). Die "schwere Knieverletzung, als deren Folge er zeitlebens 'claudicans' blieb, [fesselte] ihn über ein Jahr ans Bett" (MGG), schuf ihm aber auch die Muße für schriftstellerische Arbeiten.       Rome: Giacomo Mascardi, 1623. First edition, first issue of an outstanding document in the history of science. The work grew out of the appearance of three comets in the autumn of 1618 and articulate the principal arguments of whether they were atmospheric or celestial phenomena. More importantly, Il Saggiatore is intimately connected with, if indeed it did not originate, the rift between Galileo and the Jesuits which ultimately saw the astronomer imprisoned by the Inquisition after the publication of the Dialogo in 1632. Il Saggiatore is often called Galileo?s ?scientific manifesto,? and is certainly one of the most celebrated polemics in the history of physical science. It is the first of Galileo?s works written after the Inquisiton?s warning not to propound or defend the Copernican theory, which of course he does, albeit in covert form. The engraved illustrations in Il Saggiatore include some of the earliest published of the rings of Saturn, Mars in inferior and superior conjunction, and the phases of Venus.       Spinoza Catella Jessurun, Kiliaen van Rensselaer van 1623-1636 (1917); Spooner, The Van Rensselaer family (1907). Collection of four letters, two by Killiaen Rensselaer to his fiancée Hillegonda van Byl(la)er, who was living in Utrecht and whom Van Rensselaer would marry in 1616, written at Frankfurt, shortly after his arrival there to attend the "Messe", and two letters by Hillegonda. Kiliaen van Rensselaer (1586-1643), a Dutch diamond and pearl merchant from Amsterdam, was one of the founders and directors of the Dutch West India Company. He played a pivotal role in the establishment of New Netherland. In very good condition.

Cette deuxième édition, identique à l'originale de Fribourg de 1598 si ce n'est pour la page de titre, publiée selon l'indication dans l'ancienne ville d'Amiterno (actuellement San Vittorino, dans les Abruzzes), jadis siège épiscopal, est beaucoup plus rare que l?édition originale publiée par Wilhelmi Maess à Fribourg. L'édition constitue une curiosité typographique, puisque il est presque certain que l'ouvrage à été imprimé en Suisse et même à Fribourg et pour une raison de droit- d'auteur ou -politique la réimpression n'était pas possible. Le choix de la Ville de Amiterni s?explique par fait que c'est la ville de Salluste, fameux historien de l'antiquité (d'ou vient l'expression ?Amiterni, Ville des Historiens).       Venetia Appresso Alessandro de' Vecchi 1623 - The AGGIUNTA is an eighth part of Giovanni Botero's "Le Relationi Universali . divise in sette parti" and present only in a few copies of that work published in Venice by Alessandro de' Vecchi in 1618 and 1623. It was also issued separately. 1623, Italian text, 8vo, approximately 20 x 160 mm, 8½ x 6¼ inches, large woodcut title illustration of a seated African man with a boy, both holding sticks, the man with a parrot on his shoulder and some kind of fur cape over his back, 16 full page woodcut images depict hideous monsters and fabulous creatures, mainly part human, one shows a monstrous bird, C1v-D5r contain 13 full page woodcuts of natives of India, Africa and Arabia, plus 2 in text (a mother and small child, and a repeat of the title page image) of which 13 including the title page illustration and the 2 text images are by Hans Burgkmair and his workshop, on D7v is a full page woodcut of a tree with no caption or text, (64) pages, collation: A-D8, on D8r are the names of 2 editors: Uberto Fabro and Andrea Berna. Bound in late 19th century boards with stencilled blue and brown floral pattern, endpapers replaced in the rebinding. Head and tail of spine very slightly worn, slight rubbing to hinges and corners, very small modern bookplate on front pastedown, 2 very small pale stains on title page, small faint damp stain to top edge of most pages (10 x 40 mm wide, 3/8" x 1¾"), otherwise a very good clean copy housed in wrap-around chemise and morocco backed slipcase with gilt lettered leather label. Hans Burgkmair the Elder (1473–1531) was a noted German painter and woodcut printmaker. The thirteen woodcuts by him are taken from a panorama on 5 blocks showing The Procession of the ruler of Cochin, Malabar published in 1508. These images appear only in this edition of Botero's "Le Relationi Universali . divise in sette parti" and the previous one in 1618 and in the separate issues of the Aggiunta.
