The first volume of the Old Testament has only the engraved general title-page, while each of the remaining Old Textament volumes as printed has a separate volume title-page naming the books it covers (including the volume with the apocrypha, miscellaneos texts and the indexes. After the general title-page follow a preface to the reader, the decree of the Council of Trent, "Paulus Papa V. Ad futuram rei memoriam" (Pope Paul V died in 1621) and a privilege, dated Brussels, 1611. The Old Testament also has prefaces to the books. The New Testament has no preliminaries except its title-page. In 1546 the Council of Trent ordered a revision of the Vulgate Latin Bible to establish an authorized Catholic text. Pope Sixtus V ordered the preparation of the new edition, printed by the Vatican Press and published in 1590. The book has been variously described as 12mo, 16mo and 24mo, but it is in fact a 24mo in 8s. The three divisional titles possibly printed specially for this copy have vertical chainlines and may be in 18mo format. The binding stamps are finely cut and skilfully applied, especially the curls on the spine, so it is likely to have been executed by one of the great French binders of ca. 1700.With an owner's insc … [Click Below for Full Description]

SCHEFFER, Johannes Gerhard.
[6], 99; 146; 73, [7] pp.First edition of the Dutch translation of a celebrated ethnographic monograph on Swedish Lapland by the German-born professor Johannes Gerhard Scheffer (1621-1679). Scheffer's account contains valuable information on the Lappish culture, with chapters on their ceremonies, houses, diet, clothing, trading customs, handicraft, entertainment, hunting, as well as marriage and death customs. "This history long remained the main source of information on Lapland" (Cox). It has become the liveliest, detailed and uncondescending early modern account of the far north and its population, now known as the Sami. The present Dutch edition was illustrated by the engraver Jan Luyken, one of the most famous illustrators of the Netherlands during the second half of the 17th century. The plates depict the daily life in the north, but also the worship of various idols, encounters with gnomes, etc. Some plates with minor restorations, some occasional foxing and a few small marginal water stains on the last few leaves. Front cover slightly damaged. A very good copy.l Alden & Landis 682/155; Klaversma & Hannema 1282 and 1283; cf. Cox I, p. 178.

> Brunet, II, 916, e Graesse, III, 282 citano l'edizione 1588. 2150 gr. BONTIUS, Reinier? and others].
1621. "206" [= 208], [8] pp.Fourth(?) edition of a very rare anonymous medical guide with 639 numbered entries, most of them discussing a particular ailment and recommending a medicine and/or other treatment. At the end is an alphabetical index of the ailments. All editions are rare. The Dutch title can be translated as "Princely gift, or: A medicine book" and the title-pages give some information about its origin. They say the book has been held in esteem by the House of Nassau in general and the Prince of Orange in particular. The printer's note to reader in 1621 says that "respected professors" provided these recipes for the noble houses of the Princes of Nassau, who have found them highly beneficial and preserve them as precious jewels. With the corner of one leaf burnt off, affecting a few words of text, and ink marks or dirt on an occasional leaf, but otherwise in good condition, with only an occasional minor marginal defect. The binding is rather dirty, with a small chip at the head of the spine and the sewing somewhat loose.l BMN I, p. 377; Krivatsy 12484; KVK & WorldCat (2 copies); STCN (2 copies).

Cohen de Ricci, 548-550; Ray Francese 5. 4 volumi, folio (425 x 300 mm). Frontespizio inciso e 275 incisioni su lastre di rame (Bell'esemplare). Pelle bazzana francese coeva, coperture con dorsi con etichette in marocchino rosso e incisi in oro, tagli dorati. [4], 172 pp. First and only edition of the French translation of one of the bestsellers of illustrated 17th-century travel literature, describing one of the most famous early voyages around the world by Joris van Spilbergen (1568-1620), a veteran Dutch East Indies naval officer-turned-pirate, undertaken from 1614 to 1618. A short survey of another of the most important early voyages around the world, by Schouten and Le Maire in the years 1615 to 1617, is added at the end (pp. 117-172) with drop-title "Navigationes Australes". It reports Le Maire's proof that Tierra del Fuego is an island and his discovery of what is still called the Strait of Le Maire, an alternative route to the Pacific. Rich in ethnographic detail, the numerous illustrations in the Miroir include oversized penguins, llamas and an Andean condor with a nine-foot wing span. -

Oblong 4to (17.5 x 23 cm). With 24 (of 25) engraved plates, including 5 double-page and 10 larger folding. Modern vellum. Naval battles, beleaguered Spanish settlements, and newly discovered islands are also depicted in detail, making the work a valuable compendium of adventure on the high seas during the Age of Discovery. With several owner's inscriptions. With a few manuscript annotations in the margin. Lacking the world map. Washed with a brush, leaving light brown steaks on most leaves, and further with an occasional leaf foxed or smudged a … [Click Below for Full Description]
