D. Thomae a quaest. 47. usque ad q. 171. Auctore Leonardo Lessio e Societate Iesu ... [...].

Mursium, 1621. Folio (36 x 23 cm); full brown leather on wooden boards, with five raised bands spine, gilted title on a light brown label at spine, gilted decorations at spine and decorated blind tooling at boards, corner bosses (traces of missing clasps at the board-edges, traces of use, leather repairs); pp. XVI, 825, LXIX. Text in Latin, printed in two columns. Engraved title-page signed: Pet. Paul. Rubenius inuent [Rubens] and Cor. Galleus sculpsit [Corneille Galle]. Printer's device on verso of last leaf. Initials; tailpieces; printed marginal notes. Nice full-page engraving, pasted at the front inside-cover, not referred to the work, representing Alessandro Magno (Alexander Magnus Aristoteli Magistro Malin scientia rerum optimarum excellere quam opulentia. A. Gellius). One of the many editions (probably the tenth) of this theological work (first published in Leuwen in 1605), also containing a juridical value, being one of the most ancient treatise on ethics applied to economy: Lessius's considerations on the morality of economic operations had an enormous influence on thought and behaviour of many political and ecclesiastical authorities. The work is preceded by the dedicace to Albert VII, Archduke of Austria, made in Louwein on 28 Aug., 1605), the preface and the explanations; the text is divided in four books, one for every cardinal virtue: De prudentia (Prudence), De iustitia et iure (Justice and Law), De fortitudine (Fortitude) and De temperantia (Temperance). Then, the text is followed by the Appendix (Appendix ad dubitationem XXIII. cap. XX. lib. II. de monte pietatis occasio scriptionis, p. 809-825), the Approbatio and the Index. The author, Leonard de Leys (Leonardo Lessio, 1554-1623), was a Flemish moral theologian from the Jesuit order, teacher of philosophy and theology at Douay and Leuwen, best known for his treatise De iustitia et iure ("On Justice and Law"), of 1605 that had more than 20 editions in the 17th century. It is probably the first in-depth moral theological approach to economic and financial questions. Lessius challenged in an authoritative way the traditional economic doctrines, and was consulted by the merchants of Antwerp as well as church leaders, statesmen. His work contains interesting details about the various forms of superstition, devil cult, sorcery and magic. Even ritual blasphemies were practiced, carnal love acts were performed on holy places. Prov.: An ownership name (unidentified, dated 1630) on the first flyleaf; another one (crossed and unidentified) on top of the title-page; an ink stamp ownership from an extint Belgian library (Bibliotheca Convent. Capuccin. Herendaliens) at the title-page verso and at the recto of the following leaf. Ref.: No copy of this edition in ICCU, that quotes other editions. OCLC: 35408521 (locates only two copies of this edition in USA, at the Gonzaga University and at the Saint Louis University). Dekkers, p. 100; De Backer-Sommervogel IV-1730; Corpus Rubenianum XXI, n° 38, fig. 128; Biogr. Nat. XII-79/81. Cond.: Traces of use at the first fly-leaf and the first leaves, light foxing at some leaves, occasional little wormholes at the first leaves, not affecting the text; repairs at some leaves (title-page included). Overall, a good copy.

Orleans: Peter & Jacob Chouet. Good with no dust jacket. 1621. First Edition. Vellum. A very scarce copy, the first edition of the Greek text, with Stephanus' and Hervet's Latin translation in parallel, of the philosopher Sextus Empiricus. , one of the most influential of ancient thinkers, the father of philosophical scepticism. In a large, handsome vellum folio, from 1621. Engraved title-vignette, large woodcut initials and head and tail pieces to first leaves. (xx), 168, 520, (xlii) pp. In good antiquarian condition, in an early or contemporary full vellum binding which is a bit grubby, some cracking and tearing of the vellum at the top and bottom spine. Interior has institutional library stamps, an owner inscription on the first blank, the second blank is missing the bottom 1/3 of the page and is covered in extensive notes in Latin and Greek in an old hand, with a date and an owner's name (which I cannot read). Title page has an owner inscription dated 1674 along with some old library marks. Paper is browning and there is some neat scholarly small marginalia throughout with occasional underlining (neat and faint). There is some very faint humidity staining at the back but otherwise this scarce volume is clean and unmarked, binding very sturdy. An influential Latin translation of Sextus's Outlines was published by Henricus Stephanus in Geneva in 1562,[and this was followed by a complete Latin Sextus with Gentian Hervet as translator in 1569. Petrus and Jacobus Chouet published the Greek text for the first time in 1621. The Greek is printed in the left column with a parallel Latin translation in the right column, reproducing Stephanus' and Hervetus' Latin translations. “The edition also includes Diogenes Laertius' Pyrrhonis Vita on page 481-95 and Galen's De optimo docendi genere liber on 497-503; and in an appendix we find Stephanus' commentaries both on Sextus, on pp 505-520, and on Laertius p 521…There are very useful indices…According to Greaves…the Chouet edition is based on Turin, Biblioteca Nazionale Universitaria ms…”; Folio 13" - 23" tall .

La Commare o Raccoglitrice. Divisa in tre libri. -

Venezia, Ciotti, 1621. In-4 (20 x 14,2 cm.). Piena pergamena molle coeva. Wellcome I, 4261. Cf. Garrison & M. 6144: «First Italian book on obstetrics. It is a work of importance for the study of the history of Caesarean section; in it Mercurio advocated the Caesarean operation in cases of contracted pelvis». Fourth edition (first 1596) of the first Italian work on obstetrics. With en engr. title and 31 interesting woodcut text illustrations, mostly full-page: Caesarean section (2), the position to be assumed by women in labour, the uterus with the various positions of the foetus, surgical instruments, etc. Two ff. misbound and worm track in lower inner corner of a dozen leaves, otherwise a good copy in contemp. limp vellum.

A Discourse of Trade from England unto the East-Indies: answering the diverse objections which are usually made against the same [bound with other works]

FIRST EDITION. Mun served on the board of the East India Company from 1615 until his death in 1641. This is his first publication. In the Discourse on Trade (1621), Mun defends the company against charges of depleting England's bullion stock--and thus its wealth--by sending it to the East Indies in exchange for goods. Mun, also known for England's Treasure by Foreign Trade, published in 1664, years after his death, was the leading theorist of mercantilism. In the Discourse, Mun argued that the temporary export of gold and silver resulted in a net expansion of wealth through the growth of international trade. In Mun's view, the trading universe was essentially a coherent and mutually supporting community. Too much frugality at home would restrict foreign purchases of English good, he warned, for if the English did not use foreign goods, foreigners would not have the wherewithal to buy English ones and there would be no sale abroad. . . [Mun presents a] succinct and compelling explanation of the dynamics of growth through commercial expansion" (Appleby, Economic Thought and Ideology in 17th-Century England). VERY RARE. No copies appear in the auction records since 1979. This is one of a handful of copies to appear for sale in this century. Mun's Discourse is bound with 3 other rare 17th-century tracts on trade: "the earliest example of corporation publicity" WHEELER, JOHN. A Treatise of Commerce wherein are shewed the commodities arising by a well ordered and ruled trade, such as that of the Societie of Merchants Adventurers is proved to be. London: John Harrison, 1601. Wheeler's Treatise of Commerce is "the earliest example of corporation publicity" and "an important milestone in the development of marketing. ... It represents the characteristically medieval theory of the trade monopoly, bolstered by monarchical authority and jealously guarded against competition" (Hotchkiss). This is the second edition, preceded by the even more rare Middleburgh edition of the same year. Wheeler was secretary to the Company of Merchant Adventurers, which controlled the trade of cloth between England and the continent. This book is a response to the Privy Council's granting of trade privileges to the Company's rival Hanseatic League cities of Hamburg and Stade. Wheeler argues for the superiority of the Company over unorganized traders, extolling the Company's beneficial effects such as increasing exports, cheapening imports, and raising customs revenue. HANDBOOK FOR TRADERS [BROWNE, JOHN.] The Merchants Avizo, or instructions very necessary for their sonnes and servants, when they first send them beyond the sea, as to Spaine, and Portugale, and other countries. Written by a wel-willer to youth, I.B. merchant in Bristoll. London: Richard Whitaker, 1640. The Merchants Avizo, first published in 1589, provides information about Spanish, Portuguese, and French weights, measures, and money, as well as commodities including pepper, cloves, cinnamon, sugar, oils, and wine. THE WEST INDIES TRADE DALBY, THOMAS. An Historical Account of the Rise and Growth of the West-India Collonies and of the great advantages they are to England, in respect to trade. London: Joseph Hindmarsh, 1690. FIRST EDITION. Merchant Sir Thomas Dalby published his Historical Account after a failed attempt to repeal the new sugar duty with threatened the West Indies trade. Dalby advocates the creation of a common factory and bank of credit to facilitate the trade. 18th-century calf. Fine condition., The 17th-century economics tracts that survive in private hands have almost invariably been broken out of volumes like this and rebound. This exceptional collection, including Mun's celebrated Discourse on Trade and other important early economics and trade texts, is a rare survival.

Newly revised and expanded edition of Lastman's very rare best-selling practical handbook of navigation, first published in 1621 as Schat-kamer des grooten seevaertskunst and almost entirely revised in 1642 with the title: Kunst der stuerluyden . At least six edition appeared between 1642 and 1675, all very rare (only 1 or 2 copies of each are recorded in the STCN).Shipping, navigation and trade played a central role in the Dutch golden age in the 17th century. The VOC (Dutch East India Company), established in 1602, brought Dutch or Dutch-financed ships to all parts of the globe. This required both advances in the art of navigation and the communication of navigation skills to a much larger public. The successful end of the Netherlands' Eighty-Years' War of independence from Habsburg Spain in 1648, meant that numerous sailors would be coming home from the war and many would seek work in the VOC, WIC (Dutch West India Company) and other commercial trading ships, which set a high value on navigational skills. Even though the Netherlands had one of the highest literacy rates in the world, the sailors who needed to or wished to learn navigation were not always well-educated, so practical guides assuming little knowledge of mathematics were essential. A minor dampstain in the foot margin of the first 100 pages, some leaves slightly browned, pp. 133-134 with the lower right corner torn off (not affecting the text), paper flaw in pp. 201-203, mostly in the fore-edge margin, but affecting two letters, and p. 209 cut short, touching the lowest lines of the table, but with its text still readable. Some minor damage to the foot and head of the spine. Nonetheless still a good and attractive copy.

A Discourse of Trade from England unto the East-Indies: answering the diverse objections which are usually made against the same [bound with other works]

London: Nicholas Okes for John Pyper 1621 - FIRST EDITION. Mun served on the board of the East India Company from 1615 until his death in 1641. This is his first publication. In the Discourse on Trade (1621), Mun defends the company against charges of depleting England’s bullion stock—and thus its wealth—by sending it to the East Indies in exchange for goods. Mun, also known for England’s Treasure by Foreign Trade, published in 1664, years after his death, was the leading theorist of mercantilism. In the Discourse, Mun argued that the temporary export of gold and silver resulted in a net expansion of wealth through the growth of international trade. In Mun’s view, the trading universe was essentially a coherent and mutually supporting community. Too much frugality at home would restrict foreign purchases of English good, he warned, for if the English did not use foreign goods, foreigners would not have the wherewithal to buy English ones and there would be no sale abroad. . . [Mun presents a] succinct and compelling explanation of the dynamics of growth through commercial expansion” (Appleby, Economic Thought and Ideology in 17th-Century England). VERY RARE. No copies appear in the auction records since 1979. This is one of a handful of copies to appear for sale in this century. Mun’s Discourse is bound with 3 other rare 17th-century tracts on trade: “the earliest example of corporation publicity” WHEELER, JOHN. A Treatise of Commerce wherein are shewed the commodities arising by a well ordered and ruled trade, such as that of the Societie of Merchants Adventurers is proved to be. London: John Harrison, 1601. Wheeler’s Treatise of Commerce is “the earliest example of corporation publicity” and “an important milestone in the development of marketing. It represents the characteristically medieval theory of the trade monopoly, bolstered by monarchical authority and jealously guarded against competition” (Hotchkiss). This is the second edition, preceded by the even more rare Middleburgh edition of the same year. Wheeler was secretary to the Company of Merchant Adventurers, which controlled the trade of cloth between England and the continent. This book is a response to the Privy Council’s granting of trade privileges to the Company’s rival Hanseatic League cities of Hamburg and Stade. Wheeler argues for the superiority of the Company over unorganized traders, extolling the Company’s beneficial effects such as increasing exports, cheapening imports, and raising customs revenue. This exceptional collection, including Mun’s celebrated Discourse on Trade and other important early economics and trade texts, is a rare survival. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

DE RE METALLICA. LIBRI XII. QUIBUS OFFICIA, INSTRUMENTA, MACHINAE, AC OMNIA DENIQUE AD METALLICAM SPECTANTIA.

Ludovici Regis, Basil 1621 - Folio (8" x 12-1/2") bound in library buckram; irregularly paginated: [10], 502, [58] pages. Illustrated with 273 woodcuts, many full and half page, some signed with the monogram "RMD," and generally attributed to Hans Rudolf Manuel Deutsch (fl.1525-1572) or, less commonly, Blasius Weffring. Previously published in 1556 and 1561, this edition seems scarcer than either of the previous. PRINTING & THE MIND OF MAN 79: "The first systematic treatise on mining and metallurgy and one of the first technological books of modern times." Herbert Hoover, who first translated this book into English, described this title in his autobiography as "the first important attempt to assemble systematically in print the world-knowledge on mining, metallurgy, and industrial chemistry. It was the great textbook of those industries for two centuries and had dominated thought and practice all that time. In many mining regions and camps, including the Spanish South America, it was chained to the church altar and translated by the priest to the miners between religious services." The book combines a profound technical and financial knowledge of mining with an underlying interest in the health and daily routine of mine workers. The woodcut impressions are strong and dark. As customary with this title, there is browning throughout, occasionally heavy. Small piece of title page repaired with no loss of text or illustration; ink names of David Stuart dated 1771 and Joseph Robertson dated 1830 on title page. Library bookplate on front pastedown and small ink number on the title page illustration; no other library markings except for numbers on the spine. An important and richly illustrated title. Very Good in a serviceable binding [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Each volume contains an ex libris (Dr. O.H. Dijkstra). The spines of volume two and four are slightly loose at the top. The corners of all the books are a bit worn. Overall the books are in good condition (no foxing). Rare edition. 13 x 21 cm, vol. 1. [4] 1-208 pp., vol. 2. [4] 209-450 pp., vol. 3. [4] 451-676 pp., vol. 4. [4] 677-916 pp. The books are illustrated and engraved by J. Punt and Vinkeles (each story is accompanied by an engraving). The French author Jean de La Fontaine (1621-1695) was one of the most influential fable writers of all time. Although his stories are loosely based on the work of old masters like Aesopus and Phaedrus, they were of such quality that they became immensely popular. De la Fontaine belonged to the so called Classicists, which meant that he took his inspiration from Greek and Roman antiquity. These views made him an opponent of Charles Perrault (1628-1703), the other famous story writer of the time, who thought that modern literature was superior to that of the olden days. The illustrations of Jan Punt (1711-1779) and Reinier Vinkeles (1741-1816) are a beautiful replenishment to the text of La Fontaine. Vinkeles, who was the student of Punt, outshined his master later in life with his close to nature engravings.

Il Trinciante [bound with] Lo Scalco.

Padua: Martini Stampator Camerale/ Guasparri Crivellari. 1621/1623. Small oblong quarto. Twentieth century wood-patterned boards; pp. 18, 28 plates illustrating methods of carving meat with manuscript additions, missing folding plate of carving utensils; pp. 46, missing all 3 plates; very good. First editions. Significant because it contains the first printings of two parts of what became Giegher's Tre Trattati (1629). The third part, on napkin folding, was never printed individually. Il Trinciato deals with the art of carving meant, while Lo Scalco (The Steward) concerns service; the three parts together became one of the most important guides to the serving of meals in the best houses, and the carving illustrations are both fascinating and appealing. Mattia Giegher (c.1589 - c. 1639, born Matthias Jager in Moosburg, Bavaria) moved to Italy in around 1616 and was so famed for his mastery of the arts of hospitality that he lectured on the subject at the University of Padua. Banqueting was an important facet of European diplomacy and it was of more than domestic importance that the niceties were performed correctly. Tre Trattati itself is a very rare work, only 17 copies being recorded on Worldcat; it records 2 copies of Lo Scalco, and none of Il Trinciato. Although sadly lacking some plates, this is an item of utmost scarcity.

Amsterdam, Jan ten Hoorn, 1682. 4to. With engraved frontispiece and 16 engraved plates by Jan Luyken, and 1 folding engraved map. Contemporary vellum.

Alden & Landis 682/155; Klaversma & Hannema 1282 and 1283; cf. Cox I, p. 178. First edition of the Dutch translation of a celebrated ethnographic monograph on Swedish Lapland by the German-born professor Johannes Gerhard Scheffer (1621-1679). Scheffer's account contains valuable information on the Lappish culture, with chapters on their ceremonies, houses, diet, clothing, trading customs, handicraft, entertainment, hunting, as well as marriage and death customs. "This history long remained the main source of information on Lapland" (Cox). It has become the liveliest, detailed and uncondescending early modern account of the far north and its population, now known as the Sami. The present Dutch edition was illustrated by the engraver Jan Luyken, one of the most famous illustrators of the Netherlands during the second half of the 17th century. The plates depict the daily life in the north, but also the worship of various idols, encounters with gnomes, etc. Some plates with minor restorations, some occasional foxing and a few small marginal water stains on the last few leaves. Front cover slightly damaged. A very good copy.

With engraved title-page, engraved portrait of the author (after P. de Backer), both by Antoine van der Does ("AVD"), and 3 nearly full-page engraved illustrations in the text, probably by Van der Does. 18th-century vellum.

Bibl. Belg I, p. 319; BCNI 9630; Funck, pp. 282-283; STCV (8 copies incl. 4 incomplete). First edition, in Flemish Dutch, of a didactic satire, mostly in verse, by the Flemish poet and lawyer Willem van der Borcht or Guilelmus a Castro (1621/22-1668) in Brussels, with elegies and epigrams alternating with prose passages. It allegorically presents a mirror of self-knowledge and knowledge of the world, intended to improve the faults of the age and show the foolishness and vanity of the world. The fine plates by Antoine van der Does, showing scenes of rich and frivolous society, are of interest for the costume and morals of the time. The "Toe-ghifte", an integral part of the edition, but with its own title-page on 2D1, represents the world as a capricious woman. The portrait shows Van der Borcht at age 21 with the motto "nosce te ipsum", and a 2-line verse by Ericus Puteanus below. The 3 illustrations show realistic genre scenes, influenced by Rubens. Half the copies listed by the STCV lack the portrait and/or the engraved title-page. One illustration was printed over a crease in the paper, leaving a white line through part of the scene. In very good condition, with a minor water stain in the head margin of the engraved title, just touching its border. Binding lacking ties, with 1 sewing support broken at the back hinge, slightly wrinkled and a bit dirty, but still good. First edition of a satire of society, with plates made for it by Antoine van der Does.
