Antique Collectible Book 1621 ROMAN CATHOLIC MISSAL EXORCISM RITUALS LATIN PLANTIN HOLY BIBLE DEMONOLOGY In 1555, Christoffel Plantin released his first book. In less than twenty years, Plantin's publishing house has become the top in Europe. Christophe Plantin and his son-in-law Jan Moretus were a revolutionary duo. They were the first printers on an industrial scale - the Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckerberg of their day. Four hundred years later, you can simply drop in on them. Because their home and workplace are still there, as if they had just popped out to the bakery. It was printed by Plantin-Moretus press. Although the structure has changed over time, generally speaking, a missal is a liturgical book that contains the text (chants, prayers, readings), rubrics (areas of text written in red), and instructions for the Roman Catholic mass. This particular missal contains ten two-page spreads featuring full-page engravings of religious scenes facing text surrounded by very ornate and detailed engraved borders. The detailed images provide an opportunity to learn about iconography, specifically Christian iconography. The title page also features a depiction of the last supper. Unfortunately, none of the engravings are signed, making authorship unclear. This particular missal is notab … [Click Below for Full Description]

The leaves with the most marginalia include p. 47 (to 13 lines), p. 54 (to 16 lines), p. 87 (to 10 lines), and p. 116 (to 11 lines). (Photos of all 4 attached.) Happily none of the pages to this volume are heavily annotated. Though there are marginalia to just 3 lines on p. 298, the handwriting is significantly larger so I decided to include a photo of this page as well. Collation to misnumbered leaves is complete. Marginalia are to the following leaves: 15-22, 24-33, 35-38, 40-61 [p. 52 misnumbered "25"], 63, 65, 67-75, 77-83, 85-107 [p. 101 misnumbered "102"; "7" to p. 107 obscured], 109-129, 131-132, 134-136, 138-148, 151, 154-156, 158-166, 169-173, 175-178, 180-184, 186-188, 192, 198-199, 202-212 [pp. "202" and "203" misnumbered "102" and "103" respectively], 214-217, 224, 226-229, 231-232, 234-238, 240-242, 245-248, 250-253, 255-257, 260-262, 266-276, 281-284, 286, 288, 290-291 [misnumbered "190" and "191" respectively], 293 [misnumbered "193"], 295-296 [misnumbered "195" and "196" respectively], 298 [misnumbered "198"]; JG consignment; shelved Case 0.

JANSEN, Anthony.
Landwehr, Emblem and fable books 383; Praz, p. 523; De Vries, Emblemata 38. First edition of an emblem book by the Dutch poet Anthony Jansen (ca. 1621-1696). The work is based on Otto Vaenius's Quinti Horatii Flacci Emblemata, an emblem book illustrating the Horace's poems. The emblems of the present edition were newly engraved at Amsterdam, most of them in reverse after Vaenius's engravings, with a few signed by A. Loeimans and A. Seil: little-known artists who probably worked in direct service of the Amsterdam publisher. The emblems, however, are as beautifully done as those by Vaenius himself, achieving a fine play with light and darkness by the use of various engraving techniques. All emblems have a motto in Latin engraved below on the copper-plate and a French letterpress quatrain below, with on the facing page an extensive Latin quotations from Horace and poems in Dutch and French written by Anthony Jansen, each with their own caption.Browned and slightly foxed throughout, with a few small stains. Binding slightly stained. Overall a very good copy.

1621. Littleton's Tenures in English Littleton, Sir Thomas [1402-1481]. Littletons Tenures in English, Lately Perused and Amended. London: Printed for the Companie of Stationers, 1621. 142, [2] ff. Octavo (5-1/2" x 3-1/2"). Recent period-style calf, blind rules to boards, raised bands, blind ornaments and lettering piece to spine, edges rouged, endpapers renewed. Moderate toning, light browning to margins, early inkstains and annotations to margins of a few leaves, soiling, some edgewear and owner signature (of John Blome/ 2 August 1644) to title page. ,250. * Later edition. Written during the reign of Edward IV [1442-1483] and first published around 1481, Littleton's Tenures is probably the most revered treatise in the history of the common law. Much admired for its learning and style, it is concerned with tenures and other issues relating to real property. This venerable work, which Coke called "the ornament of the Common Law, and the most perfect and absolute work that ever was written in any humane science," is considered a landmark because it renounced the principles of Roman law (and Latin) in favor of guidelines and doctrines drawn from the Year Books and, when necessary, hypothetical cases. The first dated English translation was published in 1538. OCLC locates 6 copies worldwide of the 1621 edition, and 3 in law libraries (Yale, U. Penn, U. Texas). BMN I, p. 377; Krivatsy 12484; KVK & WorldCat (2 copies); STCN (2 copies). Fourth(?) edition of a very rare anonymous medical guide with 639 numbered entries, most of them discussing a particular ailment and recommending a medicine and/or other treatment. At the end is an alphabetical index of the ailments. All editions are rare. The Dutch title can be translated as "Princely gift, or: A medicine book" and the title-pages give some information about its origin. They say the book has been held in esteem by the House of Nassau in general and the Prince of Orange in particular. The printer's note to reader in 1621 says that "respected professors" provided these recipes for the noble houses of the Princes of Nassau, who have found them highly beneficial and preserve them as precious jewels. With the corner of one leaf burnt off, affecting a few words of text, and ink marks or dirt on an occasional leaf, but otherwise in good condition, with only an occasional minor marginal defect. The binding is rather dirty, with a small chip at the head of the spine and the sewing somewhat loose.

RAPIN, René.
F. Giorgetta, Hortus librorum liber hortorum I, pp. 339-340; M.L. Gothein, History of garden art I, pp. 431-432; cf. Hunt 324. First edition of a poem in praise of gardens and garden art in the age of Louis XIV, written in Latin verse in the manner of Virgil's Georgics by the French Jesuit René Rapin (1621-1687), tutor to the children of the dedicatee Guillaume de Lamoignon. Louis XIV began the work of transforming the old royal hunting lodge at Versailles into his royal palace in 1661 and was not to complete the first phase until 1678, so Rapin's work both reflected its influence and influenced both the palace itself and the fashion for garden art internationally. The poem itself is divided into four books, the first devoted primarily to flower gardens in the first decade of the 17th-century, particularly in France under Henry IV and his queen Maria de' Medici. While this book mostly follows tradition concerning the construction of gardens and myths about various flowers themselves, the second book on parks and trees introduces new ideas where the garden becomes a stage that transports one into a formally arranged world of geometrical patterns, mazes and meticulously trimmed hedges to display the gardener's art. Curiously Rapin exempts the oak from this rigour of clipping, for it represents the natural forest. The third book is devoted to the use of water, again with an emphasis on artifice: fountains, cascades and other waterworks. The final book is devoted to orchards. The poem itself is followed by a prose debate between the ancients and moderns on garden design, where … [Click Below for Full Description]

Antique Collectible Book 1621 ROMAN CATHOLIC MISSAL EXORCISM RITUALS LATIN PLANTIN HOLY BIBLE DEMONOLOGY In 1555, Christoffel Plantin released his first book. Unfortunately, none of the engravings are signed, making authorship unclear. This particular missal is notab … [Click Below for Full Description]
