Littleton, Sir Thomas
1621. Littleton's Tenures in English Littleton, Sir Thomas [1402-1481]. Littletons Tenures in English, Lately Perused and Amended. London: Printed for the Companie of Stationers, 1621. 142, [2] ff. Octavo (5-1/2" x 3-1/2"). Recent period-style calf, blind rules to boards, raised bands, blind ornaments and lettering piece to spine, edges rouged, endpapers renewed. Moderate toning, light browning to margins, early inkstains and annotations to margins of a few leaves, soiling, some edgewear and owner signature (of John Blome/ 2 August 1644) to title page. ,250. * Later edition. Written during the reign of Edward IV [1442-1483] and first published around 1481, Littleton's Tenures is probably the most revered treatise in the history of the common law. Much admired for its learning and style, it is concerned with tenures and other issues relating to real property. This venerable work, which Coke called "the ornament of the Common Law, and the most perfect and absolute work that ever was written in any humane science," is considered a landmark because it renounced the principles of Roman law (and Latin) in favor of guidelines and doctrines drawn from the Year Books and, when necessary, hypothetical cases. The first dated English translation was published in 1538. OCLC locates 6 copies worldwide of the 1621 edition, and 3 in law libraries (Yale, U. Penn, U. Texas). MUN, THOMAS
London: Nicholas Okes for John Pyper, 1621. FIRST EDITION. Mun served on the board of the East India Company from 1615 until his death in 1641. This is his first publication. In the Discourse on Trade (1621), Mun defends the company against charges of depleting England s bullion stock and thus its wealth by sending it to the East Indies in exchange for goods. Mun, also known for England s Treasure by Foreign Trade, published in 1664, years after his death, was the leading theorist of mercantilism. In the Discourse, Mun argued that the temporary export of gold and silver resulted in a net expansion of wealth through the growth of international trade. In Mun s view, the trading universe was essentially a coherent and mutually supporting community. Too much frugality at home would restrict foreign purchases of English good, he warned, for if the English did not use foreign goods, foreigners would not have the wherewithal to buy English ones and there would be no sale abroad. . . [Mun presents a] succinct and compelling explanation of the dynamics of growth through commercial expansion (Appleby, Economic Thought and Ideology in 17th-Century England). VERY RARE. No copies appear in the auction records since 1979. This is one of a handful of copies to appear for sale in this century. Mun s Discourse is bound with 3 other rare 17th-century tracts on trade: the earliest example of corporation publicity WHEELER, JOHN. A Treatise of Commerce wherein are shewed the commodities arising by a well ordered and ruled trade, such as that of the Societie of Merchants Adventurers is proved to … [Click Below for Full Description]

Orleans: Chez Robert Hotot, Imprimeur & Libraireau Cloistre Sancte Croix, 1621. 1621 Joan of Arc Siege of Orleans Pucelle Hundred Years War French Jeanne D'Arc"One life is all we have, and we live it as we believe in living it. But to sacrifice what you are and to live without belief, that is a fate more terrible than dying." - Joan of ArcUntil the end of the 18th-century, the story of Joan of Arc was merely a legend, and little was written in histories about her life. She is considered a heroine of France and a Roman Catholic saint. Joan of Arc has been a popular figure in cultural history since the time of her death, and many famous writers, filmmakers and composers have created works about her. Cultural depictions of Joan of Arc have continued in films, theatre, television, video games, music, and performances to this day. However, there were important 17th-century works dedicated to Joan of Arc's memory including this book which incorporates accounts of the 1468 'Journal du Siege d'Orleans'. This work, according to Bryn Mawr College Library, "portrays Joan of Arc as a miraculous figure and gives a clear picture of the public veneration she received...It is based on a group of earlier accounts, including the Rehabilitation hearings."Item number: #7372 Price: $750TRIPPAULT, Jean L'Histoire et discours au vray du siége qui fut mis devant la ville d'Orléans, par les Anglois, le Mardy XII. jour d'Octobre 1428 regnant alors Charles VII. Zt. Aristotle | Heraclides Ponticus | Nicolaus of Damascus | Daniel Heinsius
Leiden: Isaac Elzevir for Officina Elzeviriana, 1621. [16], 1045, [43] p. | 8vo | *^8 A-3Y^8 | 190 x 122 mm ¶ The first version of this iconic printer's device put to paper, and among its earliest appearances. The solitaire device had debuted just the previous year and had been used in fewer than a dozen books when this Aristotle was issued. The device was eventually used in well over 400 Elzevir editions and was recut multiple times (see Berghman, "Marques Typographiques," #2-5, the present original not pictured). "This mark was the principal one of the Leyden office, and was in constant use from 1620 to 1712, long after the Elzevirs had ceased to print" (Roberts). Indeed, the device remains in use today as the logo of academic publisher Elsevier. Isaac Elzevir, who worked in the family business from 1617-1625, introduced the device and was the first of the family to undertake the printing of their own publications. ¶ First and only Elzevir edition of Aristotle's Politics, and the first edition of the Politics to include Heinsius's summaries. Includes fragments from Heraclides Ponticus and the De moribus gentium of Nicolaus of Damascus. All texts include Greek and Latin in parallel columns. Factotum initials. --- PROVENANCE: With ownership inscriptions spanning two and a half centuries: "Solvi 18 gl. Jun mens. 1700, GL Helmold" (likely Georg Ludwig Helmold, whose library was auctioned at Hannover in 1744); J.A.E. Erlmann, dated 11 June 1781, possibly being the signature of one Johann August Erlmann enrolled at Zwickau Gymnasium in 1753; an unidentified inscriptio … [Click Below for Full Description]

SPAIGNART, Christian Gilbert de (?-1632)
Gedruckt zu Magdeburg, bey Johan Francken, 1621. [volume 1], Gedruckt zu Erffordt, bey Jacob Sachsen 1622 [volume 2].2 volumes. 4to. [VIII],96; [XII]88p. Nineteenth-century sprinkled boards. Fine copies. Two of the major publications of the Tipper and See-saw time' by this Lutheran theologian and pastor in Magdeburg.Due to the rising price of silver by the end of the 16th century silver coins of the German city-states became more worth than their nominal value. After the outbreak of the Thirty Years War currencies were debased to finance the high costs of the war and the coinage system of the Habsburg Empire fell into complete disorder. Coins were weighted to sort out the not-yet-debased pieces ('kippen und wippen') and melted and mixed with copper or other cheap metals and reissued. It worked in the beginning but soon resulted in worthless coins and the complete disarray of the monetary system. Prices raised enormously and caused dreadful distress among the population. Popular protest arose and a great number of pamphlets denouncing the practice appeared between 1620 and 1622. By 1623 the debased coins were withdrawn, but the losses were carried by the impoverished population. First volume: *Kress S.505. Goldsmiths'-Kress 00507.16. GIEGHER, Mattia.
GIEGHER, Mattia. Il Trinciante [bound with] Lo Scalco. Padua: Martini Stampator Camerale/ Guasparri Crivellari. 1621/1623.Small oblong quarto. Twentieth century wood-patterned boards; pp. 18, 28 plates illustrating methods of carving meat with manuscript additions, missing folding plate of carving utensils; pp. 47, missing all 3 plates; very good.First editions. Significant because it contains the first printings of two parts of what became Giegher's Tre Trattati (1629). The third part, on napkin folding, was never printed individually. Il Trinciato deals with the art of carving meat, while Lo Scalco (The Steward) concerns service; the three parts together became one of the most important guides to the serving of meals in the best houses, and the carving illustrations are both fascinating and appealing.Mattia Giegher (c.1589 - c. 1639, born Matthias Jager in Moosburg, Bavaria) moved to Italy in around 1616 and was so famed for his mastery of the arts of hospitality that he lectured on the subject at the University of Padua. Banqueting was an important facet of European diplomacy and it was of more than domestic importance that the niceties were performed correctly. Tre Trattati itself is a very rare work, only 17 copies being recorded on Worldcat; it records 2 copies of Lo Scalco, and none of Il Trinciato. Although sadly lacking some plates, this is an item of utmost scarcity.#2098079
